The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management is moving its administrative functions to the Spears School of Business.

The School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, or HTM, has been a fixture in the College of Human Sciences at Oklahoma State for 82 years.

However, the program now has its eyes set on a new home.

The merger, which the OSU/A&M Board of Regents approved on March 1, will bring HTM into a more businessfocused curriculum. Gary Sandefur, the provost and senior vice president of Academic Affairs, said this idea came about from the changes in the HTM program.

“HTM grew out of nutritional and culinary emphasis in its early days, but over time has become more and more a management program that aligns more closely with the Spears School of Business than the College of Human Sciences,” Sandefur said.

“The move will create more opportunities for collaborative education and other efforts between the Department of Management in the Spears School of Business and HTM.” This merger impacts not only the administration of the Spears School and HTM, but also the students. The

most significant of these impacts is the change in degree programs. Kenneth Eastman, the dean of the Spears School of Business, said this will be a gradual change.

“The degree programs are good for six years,” Eastman said. “So the current students at HTM, we will honor their degree program, so they won’t see any difference. We will then design a new curriculum using our business core for new students.

So there will be a long transition phase. Existing students won’t see many of the changes. The incoming freshman class will probably be the first ones with the new curriculum.”

Not only will the HTM administration and degree programs come under the control of the Spears School of Business, but the spaces HTM occupies will also become part of Spears. This includes Planet Orange and Taylor’s, where the culinary side of HTM provides food to students, faculty, alumni and visitors. Eastman said these locations will remain where they are and continue to provide services.

“The current spaces that they control now will come into our province,” Eastman said. “They will stay there, the faculty will stay there, the programs will stay there. We have a new building, but we didn’t design it for another whole program. We certainly can’t start a new dining facility in it. We are working on activities to get

Eastman said the merger between the Spears School and HTM will bring many collaborative opportunities between the programs and provide students with more resources to ready them for

their careers.

Li Miao is the interim director of the HTM program. She said the program moving brings synergy to the school.

“How I look at our program, it’s an industry-specific business and management program,” Miao said.

“If you look at all of our

facilities: hotels, restaurant, winery and country clubs. Our students going into those, they need the business acumen and management proficiency to be the leaders in the hospitality industry.”

The approved movement is set to begin taking place on July 1, the beginning

of the fiscal year. Eastman said that will be when the HTM program and its budget will completely come under the control of the Spears School of Business.

Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis sat down to talk about race issues on college campuses, good music, and his time here at OSU. In this three-part O’Colly series, we’re delving into all things “One on One with Burns.”

Last week, we talked about how confronting diversity issues require pioneers.

Next up, good music, from personal picks to the McKnight Center opening.

Hargis was featured on OSU’s Spotify account with a personal playlist of the President’s “Poke’s Picks.”

“You’ve got to check it out,” Hargis said about the Spotify playlist featuring 30 songs.

different genres and eras. It features BORNS, Hall & Oates, Florence and the Machine, Michael Jackson and more.

“Some of it someone put together when I did Burgers with Burns last year, and I said ‘Hey I really like that.’

So they sent it to me,” Hargis said.

He spoke highly of the movie Bohemian Rhapsody and Queen’s music. Hargis confessed that Paul McCartney

and songs such as “Don’t Stop Believing,” “Any Way You Want It,” and “Making my Dreams Come True” are his favorite from the playlist. Laughing, he also highly recommends James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke.

“Oh I love them,” Hargis confessed about Corden’s Carpool Karaokes. “Have you seen the Paul McCartney one?

You have to see it.”

Aside from pop,

rock and personal picks, Hargis also spoke highly of a whole different genre of music: classical and broadway.

The OSU McKnight Center for the Performing Arts will open this coming fall, and Hargis discussed its October 11th opening.

“They’re bringing in 140 players from the New York Philharmonic to perform and work with our students and faculty,” Hargis said.

For its grand opening, the McKnight Center will be hosting the New York Philharmonic for a three-day performance of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony, among other incredible pieces. Its subsequent concert schedule includes pianists and Broadway musicals.

In contrast to classical music, Hargis laughed cheerily when prompted about an old song he is

rumored to have written years ago.

Immediately he admitted that yes, he had in fact written a song titled “The Dry Tortuga Song” while sailing off the coast of Florida with the Boy Scouts of America.

“We’d been at sea little longer than I’d like, and there was a piano on the boat,” Hargis said. “So I wrote the Dry Tortuga Song.”

Hargis laughed at the memory.

From the silliness of the Dry Tortuga song, to President Hargis’ recent release of his “Poke’s Picks” playlist on Spotify, to the upcoming New York Philharmonic performance here on campus, music is a prevalent part of President Hargis’ life.
