Baxter Black, also known as BB, is not an ordinary miniature horse.

Most of the time, Baxter is at Turning Point Ranch, a therapeutic horseback riding center, where he helps and comforts those suffering from physical, mental, emotional or socio-economic challenges.

However, during home football games, Baxter becomes BB, Bullet’s newest sidekick.

Cimarron National Works on Paper exhibit returns to OSU D r u N orton , S taff Repo rt er @ o colly

The Cimarron National Works on Paper exhibit is back at OSU after a 24-year hiatus.

Artists from all over the U.S. submitted their work digitally to the Oklahoma State University of Art, Graphic Design and Art History with only one criterion: all artwork must be made with or on paper.

Louise Siddons, associate professor of art history, said the exhibit was put on a hiatus in 1995 due to understaffing, low funds and insufficient time.

Siddons said the faculty in the art depart-

ment was determined to bring the exhibit back to OSU. “One of the things that faculty were really excited about was the possibility of restarting the Cimarron National because it contributed to the growth of the permanent collection,” Siddons said. “Some of the faculty who had been involved with the exhibit before and had been at OSU a lot longer than I have, said this was a great opportunity to bring artwork to campus that you wouldn’t ordinarily see.”

Cimarron National Works on Paper started as a printmaking exhibit, Siddons said.

ists don’t really think in terms of that narrow of a method,” Siddons said. “Because we have a strong printmaking and watercolor and drawing program here at OSU, we wanted to keep the paper idea, but we were open to anything you do with paper is interesting to us.”

An outside juror, Jodi Throckmartin, chose which artworks were presented in the exhibit.

Out of the 700 artworks submitted, 40 were chosen.

The artworks chosen were available for a juror’s prize, and a purchase prize of up to $2,000.

The purchase prizes were selected by a

committee made up of art faculty and a curator from the Oklahoma State University Museum of Art. The purchased work will be added to the permanent collection of the Department of Art, in the Oklahoma State Museum of Art. Siddons said one of her favorite pieces was a book titled, “I’ll call you back later,” which was one of the three purchase prizes.

Siddons chose Throckmartin as the juror because of her experience as a curator at the Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts, and her eye for diverse artworks.

“I thought that she

had the kind of high profile that would attract artists, but also not be someone that they thought, ‘Oh, she’s going to have this particular taste so I’m not going to bother because her style isn’t my style,’” Siddons said.

“For me, she felt like the perfect fit.”

The revival of the exhibit would not have been possible without donors, Siddons said.

“One of the key things that made it possible to start it up again was two gracious donors gave an initial donation to support restarting it,” Siddons said. “And so, it wouldn’t have happened without not only their financial support,

but their enthusiasm for it. It became clear that there was an audience beyond the faculty that was like, ‘We love paper.’”

Siddons said she wants the exhibit to remain biannual.

“I want it to be frequent enough that people kind of expect it, and it is an amazing way to grow the collection,” Siddons said.

The Cimarron National Works on Paper is on display until Oct. 10 at The Gardiner Art Gallery in the Barlett Center for the Visual Arts.

Admission to view the exhibit is free to all students.

The Oklahoma State women’s basketball team is ready to put last year’s woes behind it.

After a disappointing 14-16 season, coach Jim Littell had high praise for this revamped roster. The puzzle starts with All-American Vivian Gray, who averaged 20 points last season, second highest in the Big 12.

“Practice is very important for her,” Littell said. “She tries to win and excel at everything

she does.”

It’s that sort of work ethic and dedication that propelled Gray into a star player.

Gray has become a leader, but not in the traditional sense.

“She is a leader in the way she plays,” sophomore center Kassidy De Lapp said.

“Vivian is never not trying to do her best, never taking a play off.”

Gray leads by example, works hard and has a contagious effect on the rest of the team.

Gray’s leadership will be invaluable for an OSU squad that’s bringing on seven new

players.

One of the new players is Angelina Community College transfer, Angelina Mack.

Mack was the NJCAA National Player of the Year after she averaged 24. points and 11.6 rebounds per game.

Littell said Mack will be OSU’s most dominant rebounder.

OSU’s freshman class includes Micah Dennis and Sara Rodrigues. Dennis was named the Canadian High School Player of the Year after she averaged 18.2 points, 5.4 assists and four steals as a senior.

Rodrigues, however,

is more of a project.

“We really like Rodrigues,” Littell said.

“She is very raw right now, but when you see her you will see that she is a tremendous athlete who is going to be a really nice player before she graduates.”

While the additions are sure to help the Cowgirls, the retained players have an advantage of their own.

“We return a lot of players have all gained valuable experience,” Littell said.

starters. Ja’mee Asberry, Kassidy De Lapp, Clitan de Sousa and Mariam Gnanou are amongst the players who will be looking to improve on last season’s numbers.

With the added size and depth, this OSU team is different.

“We are going to have a lot of height other than just me and Mariam at the post, so we will have a lot more versatility,” De Lapp said.

The Cowgirls’ versatility is going to do a bunch of different things schematically.

OSU fans will be most excited about the

aggressive approach the Cowgirls’ plan to take on defense this year.

“Our guards this year can definitely pick up people 94 feet and deny the basketball,” Asberry said.

OSU is going to do its best “Press Virginia” impression this season.

With some new faces around campus, OSU fans have a lot to look forward to. After what Littell called a rebuilding session, the Cowgirls are ready to play.

“It’s going to be a show,” Asberry said.

“I’m very excited.”

Scissortail Park kicked off its grand opening with a free Kings of Leon Concert last Friday.

Though the entire 70 acre park was not available to the public, the concert venue in the upper park gave attendees a sneak preview of things to come at Oklahoma City’s newest attraction. The next day, the remaining areas were opened to continue the celebration.

The park was packed Friday night as the two opening acts took the stage.

Republican Hair started with a charismatic performance of their indie-rock songs, and lead singer, Luke Dick, proudly spoke of his Oklahoma roots.

Republican Hair was

followed by Broncho, an Oklahoma-based band. Both bands played solid sets, supported by the park’s quality venue and sound system.

The audience continued to grow as Kings of Leon prepared to do their set. Excitement and appreciation were common sentiments from people waiting in the crowd.

The band performed many familiar hits, which charged an already excited crowd.

One attendee heard about the event in an email and loved the experience.

“And who could pass up a free concert,” she said.

The layout of the park was grand, with a landscaped hill for visitors to spread out on.

Vendors were situated on each side of the concert area to provide food, refreshments and adult beverages.

making the venue visually appealing from any angle.

Much of the park was fenced off for Friday, but the additional attractions were still visible.

In addition to concert space, the $132 million park also offers a dog park, paddle boats, a seasonal roller rink and more.

Director of Marketing and Communication Stacey Aldridge said that the park is part of a MAPS 3 project and was guided by an advisory board.

“This used to be all vacant lots and dilapidated buildings,” Aldridge said. “So it’s just creating a whole new environment for downtown.”

The concert and the park itself were a celebration of Oklahoma’s growth. From Kings of Leon to the average visitor, everyone seemed proud of where they were.
