Merida Gibson, 2, was transported to OU Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City on Thanksgiving after her grandmother, Joan Conley, accidentally ran over the toddler in a Stillwater driveway.

The incident took place at about 5:20 p.m.

Thursday in the 2400 block of W. 26th Ave. in a private driveway.

The Stillwater Police and Fire Departments along with LifeNet Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene before Gibson was flown to Oklahoma City.

“The grandmother

(Conley) was leaving from spending the holiday with the family and did not see her 3-yearold (sic) granddaughter seated, on the ground, in front of the car,” Stillwater Police Lt. Kerry Bell said. “She pulled forward, ran over the top of the child, causing serious trauma.”

Gibson suffered face and skull fractures and internal injuries to her lungs and spleen. On Sunday, a doctor from the hospital’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery department squeezed liquid into Gibson’s head wound to keep it clean.

“He (the doctor) likes how it’s healing,” said Miguel Canche, Gibson’s dad. “He says so

far the broken face bones should heal on their own and won’t need surgery or pins.”

An orthopedic doctor checked Gibson’s legs and said both of her tibias are broken but in place. The metatarsals, bones in the foot that connect the toes, have buckle fractures but are in the right place and will heal along with the legs.

Next week, a cast will be placed on each of Gibson’s legs from her feet to under her bottom.

The casts will stay on for about 3 weeks.

Family friends said Gibson and her mother were in town from Mexico visiting family and friends for the holiday.

Canche is trying to get an emergency visa to see his daughter. He said will be going to the U.S. Consulate on Monday.

A family friend has set up a GoFundMe account toward travel and potential legal expenses related to allowing Canche to be with his family, according to the GoFundMe page. The medical expenses the family will incur are unknown. Any further

donations will go toward those expenses.

Before Gibson’s accident, her family took food to the police station for officers who were unable to be home with their families on Thanksgiving.

“The family, filled with grief, still came to each one of us and thanked us for being the ones that responded for their granddaughter,” Bell said. “We gave thanks to GOD (sic) that we were the ones that got to help with this little girl. The cops prayed with the family when the helicopter left. This was the granddaughter of the

family that brought in the Thanksgiving meal to the shifts today. I have no more words for this Thanksgiving.”

Cole Norton, a police officer, said as of 3:30 p.m. on Nov. 26th, Gibson is still in critical condition but is stable from being under sedation.

“A decision on whether or not charges will be filed will be made by the district attorney,” Norton said.

Mike Boynton walked into the Gallagher-Iba Arena theater room for his post-game press conference, gazing at the six reporters and many empty seats in front of him.

“This will be full before long, you just wait,” Boynton said as he sat down.

After Oklahoma State’s 101-74 victory against Houston Baptist on Sunday, Boynton, OSU’s men’s basketball coach, knows he has a team that is going to be flashy and score, but he realizes there are going to be nights when shots don’t fall.

During the Cowboys’ trip to the Legends Classic last

week, they shot 29.9 percent against Texas A&M in a loss and 37.9 percent in a victory against Pittsburgh.

Jeffrey Carroll, a senior guard, made his season debut against the Aggies and scored only four points.

The next game, Carroll was the star, scoring a career-high 29 points against Pitt. Yet, shots weren’t falling much more, as OSU (5-1) squeaked past the Panthers.

Sunday inside GallagherIba Arena, the story was similar early. The Cowboys led the Huskies 20-19 with 8:20 left before Thomas Dziagwa hit a free throw to start a run that pulled the Cowboys away. Although shots aren’t always falling, Boynton said the players

“I was really pleased with the way our guys played together,” Boynton said. “We made a conscious effort to play faster today. We’ve been bogged down a little bit, and I’m not sure why.

We haven’t played as fast as we’re capable of playing.”

OSU finished with 24 fast-break points, including 16 in the second half. The quick offense translated to ball movement, as the Cowboys had 26 assists on 30 made baskets.

“I thought we came out kind of flat,” Carroll said.

Carroll was one of five Cowboys to score in double figures. Kendall Smith and Dziagwa each added 16 points.

Smith and Lindy Waters also had five assists. Ten Cowboys tallied at least one assist and it is an attribute to the ball movement Boynton said has to be a focus.

The Cowboys didn’t handle the ball as well as Boynton would’ve liked, as they had 17 turnovers.

“I think the turnovers were careless,” Boynton said. “A lot of the turnovers are ones we can correct. I like aggressive turnovers but not careless ones.”

With Davon Dillard making his season debut and Carroll playing his third

game, it has been hard to find a niche within the Cowboys’ offense. Three players who played Sunday weren’t suited up against Pepperdine in the season opener.

Even after their two poor shooting performances, the Cowboys were dominant on offense. It is a work in progress, but Dziagwa said because it is still early, he is not worried about the early poor performances.

“It’s a little rusty,” Dziagwa said. “We played great today. But it’s going to take us some time to get accustomed. We’ll get things down in practice.”

Mason Rudolph faked a handoff before sailing a ball through the unseasonably nice Stillwater air. The ball floated down into James Washington’s hands and celebration ensued.

It was Oklahoma State’s first play of the second half.

It was also the last time Rudolph and Washington will connect for a touchdown pass in Boone Pickens Stadium.

The Cowboys won their Senior Day game 58-17 against Kansas on Saturday.

The Rudolph/Washington duo has dealt with squads double-teaming Washington for a majority of the season.

That was the case again for much of Saturday. When the Jayhawks left him alone, though, like on Washington’s touchdown catch, Rudolph took advantage.

Saturday’s victory comes 334 days after Rudolph and Washington announced their intentions to return for their senior seasons.

The pair announced its intentions to return on a video Dec. 27. Since the video’s

release, the hype surrounding OSU football neared all-time highs with hopes of a Big 12 Championship, national awards and a shot at the College Football Playoff.

The Cowboys’ season, though, fell short of those expectations. There will still be individual awards, but last week’s loss to Kansas State likely puts them in or below the same bowl game the team was selected for last year.

Although the season might be disappointing, Washington said he was satisfied with his decision to return.

“I’ve enjoyed every second of it,” Washington said.

“I wouldn’t regret coming back for anything.”

recognized before Saturday’s game. Each was given a flower and a football. The players walked up to OSU coach Mike Gundy for a picture before walking through a line the band and pom squad formed to the players’ loved ones. Washington and Rudolph were the final two announced.

Washington’s time with Gundy seemed longer than others. Gundy held him by the back of the shoulder pads and talked into his ear.

“He said he was proud of everything I’ve done,” Washington said. “He’s just proud of the guy I grew into and the way that I developed and the impact that I had on this team.”

The pair combined eight times Saturday for 106 yards

and the one touchdown.

The two have connected for 1,423 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. The extra season has also put Rudolph and Washington at the top of nearly every passing and receiving school record.

With a bowl game to go, though, the two will likely extend those numbers.

“He knows that we have one more game then he’s gonna have a lot more touchdown catches to come with whoever is great enough to get a player like that,” Rudolph said.
