Once a month, as the sun begins to set, people in the Stillwater community come together to partake in humanity’s universal language, art.

Members of the community walked to different events that businesses hosted during last week’s Final Friday Art Crawl.

Beautiful weather set the scene for the event. Activities ranged from casual groups hanging out at Blue Spruce to the Modella Gallery featuring a full exhibit of student-created works.

In less than a year these art crawls have capitalized on the community’s need for a centralized art experience.

Stillwater Art Guild member Brian Mitchell said the art crawls have helped the guild tap into a larger market of art fans.

“The Stillwater Art Guild is almost 60 years old,” Mitchell said. “Within the last couple of years, they have really been feeling a need that has spread out in the community. We added a gallery that stays up all year in the community center.

We have found that there are a larger group of artist in Stillwater that are interested in displaying their artwork, so our membership has been steadily increasing.”

Stillwater Art Guild approached the Stillwater Community Center shortly after the first Final Friday event, and a gallery has been in the building ever since.

“Something that has been very positive for us is having local artist coming together during every art crawl just to paint together,” Mitchell said.

“Artist tend to work alone, so having a way for them to collaborate has really helped a lot.”

One cause of the success of the Stillwater art crawl is the number of artists who are active in Stillwater and looking for outlets to express and display their crafts. In much the same way artists were searching for outlets, outlets were searching for artists.

Businesses owners in downtown Stillwater, like Valerie Bloodgood of Modella Art Gallery, happily jumped on board as soon as the Art Crawl organizers approached them. Although some business enjoy an increase in customers, others saw different benefits in facilitating these events.

“Interest in art and its variety of forms has been steadily growing in the community for a while,” Bloodgood said. “I think that the students, through Final Fridays, have elevated the interest and awareness of art in the community. Each event and every idea keeps the circle of growth going in the community… We were packed tonight because of the student show.

At the center of these new ideas is a drive from organizations like Oklahoma State University to help provide the facilities needed to host projects of this scale.

Some students might not know OSU also owns two arts buildings in the downtown Stillwater area. The OSU Museum of Art holds galleries and has facilities for departments such as graphic design. The Prairie Arts Center is OSU hands-on art center, which helps promote arts to the community through events like the Pop-Up Art Shop.

“A lot of [the growth of arts in Stillwater] has to do with OSU,” Mitchell said.

“Their commitment to making sure the Museum of Art was downtown when it could have easily been put somewhere on campus really helped this revitalization in the arts we are seeing now. Along with Modella, Stilly [and] Prairie [Arts Center], all of the sudden Stillwater has a bunch of art focused facilities in the same area that have a vested interested in collaborating with each other.”

Mike Cunningham pushed past the pain and ran up the steep concrete stairs.

The white maple court waited below him, but he hadn’t yet played a game on it.

Cunningham, a graduate transfer point guard on the Oklahoma State basketball team, had a minor left hamstring injury that kept him out of the Cowboys’ first three matchups of the season.

Cunningham still hasn’t competed on Eddie Sutton Court, but he is gaining experience at two contrasting road locations before he makes his home debut.

After playing in the AdvoCare Invitational during an 80-degree Thanksgiving break in Orlando, Florida, he and his OSU teammates are traveling to chilly Minneapolis.

They aren’t going to a basketball arena.

The Cowboys will take on Minnesota at 9 p.m. Friday in U.S. Bank Stadium, the home of the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings.

OSU hasn’t competed in a stadium since 2004, when Georgia Tech defeated the Cowboys in a Final Four matchup at the Alamodome.

No matter the venue, Cunningham, who transferred from the University of South CarolinaUpstate, is grateful he doesn’t have to sit out any longer during his last season of eligibility and his

“It was crazy, but I guess that was the best thing for me,” Cunningham said. “It got my leg back together.”

When OSU rolled past Memphis in the AdvoCare Invitational, Cunningham entered the game off the bench and played his first 17 minutes in a Cowboy jersey. After a loss to Villanova and a victory against LSU, OSU placed third. Cunningham tallied 30 points in the tournament, including 15 against the Wildcats.

“It was great seeing him out there,” Thomas Dziagwa, a Cowboy junior guard said. “He adds another piece to our team that makes us even more electric and dynamic.”

He is also the Cowboy who is most familiar with Minnesota (5-1).

One season ago, Cunningham had 13 points as USC-Upstate fell to the Golden Gophers 92-77.

“It was a great experience playing against a Big 10 team,” Cunningham said. “I feel as though us coming out here, me with the new team, I feel as though I have a better chance of winning now.”

Cunningham said this season’s Minnesota squad, which is No. 1 in its conference, looks similar to the team from the past season.

Boynton is trying to prepare his mostly young team to minimize mistakes against Jordan Murphy, whose 12.2 defensive rebounds per game rank fourth in the NCAA. “He’s an inside guy, so playing against a bunch of freshmen who are foulprone, that’s a concern,” Boynton said. “Can we keep him under control without fouling him 100 times?”

Among numerous Cowboys who are adjusting to competing at the college level and fine-tuning their techniques, Cunningham brings a veteran perspective.

“There’s a different sense of urgency, probably, with him,” Boynton said. “For a lot of these guys, there’s 100 more games. Every game he plays, it’s closer to the end, in terms of college experience. So (it) probably takes a little bit more seriousness, understanding, and especially when you get injured at this point in your career, you really worry about how much longer you’re gonna be able to do it. “(He has) just the maturity, a sense of urgency and an understanding of what it takes to have success.”

Ocean, plastic pollution is a part of our daily lives. All the negative health impacts are expected to persist for years to come.

Ways That You Can Contribute

So, what can you do to help?

Use microplastics as an example. It’s simple; recycle and reuse.

The less debris that is left to wander aimlessly, the less harm plastic pollution will bring to our planet and its inhabitants.

Most municipal companies offer recycling services for a small fee. If you cannot afford to add a recycling fee to your budget, you might try a public drop off at your local convenience collection center.

If your community does not offer this service, do your best to raise awareness, demand change and advocate for the establishment of such services.

Luckily for Stillwater residences, there is a dropoff recycling center located at 807 S. Perkins Rd. The center accepts plastic products labeled with the recycle No. 1, 2, and 5.

They also accept your usual paper products, cans and cardboard; all of which are free of charge to recycle.

The center offers recycling for several other products (some do require a fee), which are listed online. You can find the recyclable product list and instructions for drop-off at www.stillwater.org under the “utilities/customer

service” link located in the “government” tab.

Recycle, reuse, and reduce use of plastic are hands down the best ways to combat plastic pollution in our environment, but spreading awareness is a close second.

Start today and start conversations, talk to people and get them engaged.

Knowledge is power. The more people are aware about what is going on, the more we can instill change.

One simple yet effective way to let this topic arise organically is to “wear” the awareness, i.e. 4Ocean bracelets for $20 each.

No action is too small to make a difference. Two surfers, Alex Schulze and Andrew Cooper, started 4Ocean because they were devastated about the pollution they found suffocating their beloved ocean.

The bracelets are made from recycled products.

Each purchase funds the removal of one pound of trash from our oceans.

Remember: health is wealth. Together, we will advocate for a wholesome environment with pleasant views, abundant wild life and great recreational opportunities.

We can all enjoy a long and healthy life with low medical expenses and a sustainable environment for generations to come.
