Student-athletes have one of the biggest platforms at Oklahoma State, but many don’t know the best way to use it.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is an organization that allows studentathletes to come together and discuss issues on a school, conference and national level.

SAAC is the biggest place for student-athletes to voice their opinions, whether it’s involving community service or NCAA legislation.

Lana Duke, a redshirt junior on the OSU soccer team, is the Big 12 rep for SAAC at the NCAA level. There are 32 representatives from Division I schools, and Duke represents the 10 Big 12 schools.

Duke said SAAC is a place for students to have their voices heard. Although the athletes are prominent figures because of their performances on the field, court or track, Duke said athletes’ involvement in SAAC is important because student-athletes can influence NCAA legislation.

“A lot of the legislative proposals directly affect studentathletes,” Duke said. “My job is to bring in legislative proposals to OSU studentathletes and have them vote.”

Proposals at the school level vary. Athletes could vote for more bike racks outside of the academic center or other issues. If a student-athlete thinks the campus could be improved in a certain way, SAAC is the place for students to go and get those changes made.

NCAA level, Duke promotes student-athlete well-being, fosters an ambitious studentathlete environment and promote engagement at the national, conference and local levels.

Brad Lundblade, a center for the OSU football team, serves as an Autonomy 5 Governance representative for the Big 12. Lundblade is responsible for reviewing and voting on proposed autonomy legislation.

Lundblade said it’s important for athletes to be involved because it’s the best way for them to meet others and have their voices heard at a national level.

“Student-athletes need to realize we have a big voice at the national level,” Lundblade said. “We can change legislation to improve rules and regulations around athletes.

SAAC is the best place for athletes to do that.”

SAAC is comparable to the Student Government Association, but SAAC is tailored for athletes. Duke said it doesn’t matter which sports someone participates in, everyone is welcome. The more voices OSU SAAC has, the more powerful it can become.

There are always changes needed in legislation, Duke said. Although she is nearing graduation, Duke hopes she has prepared SAAC for a stronger future than when she arrived.

The first SAAC meeting for the 2017-18 school year is 7 p.m. Monday in the orange room of Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Any athlete can attend the meeting. Duke said becoming a SAAC member only helps with an athlete’s involvement on campus.

The city of Stillwater is trying to go for platinum and become a better bicycle-friendly community.

John McClenny, special projects director of Stillwater, said the city is already a bicycle-friendly community on the bronze level. Its membership is set to expire in October, according to the League of American Bicyclists.

“How it got started was Keith Reed, who works for OSU, put in the initial application about three years ago,” McClenny said. “Now we are just renewing our membership.”

The League of American Bicyclists ranks states, communities, businesses and universities on a scale that ranges from bronze to platinum.

OSU and Stillwater are both on the bronze level, although Oklahoma is the 45th-ranked state.

Along with the renewal, the League of American Bicyclists created a survey for residents of Stillwater to take.

“Part of the application process is they sent us back an optional survey,” McClenny said. “It’s optional whether we wanted to distribute it or not, and we decided we would.”

He said the survey, which runs until Sept. 30, allows the community to give feedback on its bike riding experiences. The

Scott White, an Oklahoma

State University accounting professor, is an avid bike rider and has lived in a few bikefriendly cities.

White said Stillwater is home to many people who are serious about exercising and

riding bikes, and he believes the city is trying to accommodate them.

“Every time they sort of re-do a road they sort of think about, ‘Could we do something for cyclists here?’” White said.

Megan Dickens, an architecture freshman, said she borrows her roommate’s bike to attend classes that are far away from her dorm room in Parker Hall.

Dickens said finding a smooth path and navigating construction have been her biggest obstacles.

“I think some nicer bike paths would be nice,” Dickens said. “Surprisingly, there’s a lot of people who ride their bikes, so I think multiple people would benefit.”

White said though it is nice to ride in the bike lanes because travel is quick there, the lanes aren’t always the safest option.

“If I’m out on a fast, recreational ride, I’ll get in the bike lanes because it’s sort of safe,” White said. “But if I’m biking to work with my kids or to the grocery store, I will just get on those sidewalks.”

White said the way to judge if a street or city is bicyclefriendly is that it should work for your 5-year-old kid and your grandma.

This person is ready to hear and move with God. “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way.” (Ps.25:9 NIV) If we stop and think about it; this person is the only one who will pay any attention to God’s will. Pride and self-centeredness are great hindrances to God working in us.

The apostle says, offer your body as a living sacrifice. He does not say “get religious.” You are humbling yourself before God for his will to be done; an attitude of humility. This is what Jesus did. As you do the same, God will lead and work in you.

Friday, Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph posted a picture of himself on Instagram with the caption, “Casual Friday business trips.” Saturday, he went to work.

The No. 9 Cowboys diminished Pittsburgh 59-21 at Heinz Field, with Rudolph breaking a record before halftime.

Rudolph passed for 423 yards in the first half, the most yards thrown in a half in school history. He finished with 497 yards

and five touchdowns before exiting midway through the third quarter. Rudolph hasn’t played in a fourth quarter this season.

Rudolph’s only flaw Saturday was an interception in the third quarter that ended his school-record streak of 216 consecutive passes without an interception.
