‘You won’t find a nicer person in this world:’ Hunziker keeps perspective, realizes his influence reaches farther than sports Wa d e Haug en , Co py Chief, @wad e_hau gen

It doesn’t take long for Dave Hunziker to strike up a conversation.

The woman working the register at Panera Bread knows him by name.

“I wouldn’t say I live here, but I come here a lot,” Hunziker said.

As he gets his drink, soda with no ice, he walks across the restaurant to sit. On his way to his table, Hunziker greets people left and right.

Some know him as the play-by-play voice of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, others see him as a friendly stranger.

What people don’t see behind Hunziker’s almost unbelievable façade of positivity is a man who was shaped by tragedy no person should endure.

When Hunziker was 12, his father, Paul Hunziker, died of cancer at 54.

“It changes your perspective big time,” Hunziker said. “You realize nothing is that bad…

I just remember the day it happened. It just changes your perspective on everything in life. It totally changed everything.”

Right before Hunziker’s freshman year of college, his brother Kent got in a bad car accident. He said his brother has dealt with many back and neck issues since, but he is lucky to be alive. Both events FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2019

have shaped Hunziker’s outlook.

“You realize, how big of a deal is it?” Hunziker said. “It’s not. It’s just not. There’s bigger things here. You see that every day meandering through Stillwater running errands. You don’t have to look far to see people who’re struggling. You think, ‘Huh, I don’t have much to worry about.’”

Hunziker grew up in Kahoka, Missouri, a small town of 2,000 people tucked away in the northeast corner of Missouri. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1988. He was working for Columbia College, doing almost everything in athletics, including broadcasting, when he got his first Division I job at Radford University in Radford, Virginia.

“I think I was making $6,000 a year at Columbia College,” Hunziker said. “But that was fine.”

He was at Radford for eight years, then at Western Kentucky for one year, before he got the job at OSU in 2001. Hunziker came to OSU under tough circumstances. Bill Teegins, the Cowboys revered play-by-play broadcaster, died in the OSU basketball plane crash Jan. 27, 2001.

Although he wasn’t Hunziker’s broadcast partner right away, John Holcomb said Hunziker handled the situation as

well as possible. Holcomb has been the color analyst with Hunziker for OSU football since 2005 and basketball since 2007.

“He came in in a difficult spot because Bill Teegins was so beloved,” Holcomb said. “He could’ve walked into easier situations for sure, but he also understood the situation.

“Once I met him, I knew they had made the right choice.”

Hunziker said it wasn’t as tough for him as it was the OSU community. He couldn’t imagine what people close to the situation, along with fans, were going through, but he also realized he had a job to do.

“I wanted to be respectful of everything, but I just wanted to do my job and just go about my business,” Hunziker said. “I think as much as anything, I tried to be really aware of, you know, it’s going to take a while for the healing of this to occur. Just do your job and be who you are, and things will happen as they happen.

I had not gone through that tragedy. Obviously, I understood the dynamics, but the people who were having a hard time were the OSU people.”

In talking to people about Hunziker, his preparation for a broadcast was continually mentioned. Among watching

film, doing the coaches’ show and putting together his spotter boards, Hunziker said he spends about 35 hours a week preparing for a football game.

Hunziker’s wife, Mary Beth Hunziker, said she admires her husband’s drive and determination to keep working at his craft.

“I’ve never seen him go, ‘Oh, it’s just a game. I’ll just go do it,’” Mary Beth Hunziker said. “It’s a big deal to him. Every game for him is a big deal. I just really admire his work ethic.”

One of Hunziker’s close friends in the broadcasting world, Brian Eskridge, said Hunziker never leaves anything out when preparing for a broadcast. Eskridge, the play-by-play broadcaster for TCU for 20 years, said they met when Hunziker was at Radford and Eskridge was at Appalachian State.

“There’s a good chance he knows more about your team than you know about your team,” Eskridge said. “That to me is a true professional...

He knows everything that he needs to know about both teams. You’re not going to outwork him when it comes to getting ready for a game.

“When it comes to the play-by-play at Oklahoma State, he’s as good as anyone in the country, but he also doesn’t have an ego about him. He’s the same Dave I know from Radford, dragging his gear around and calling Big South basketball.”

Hunziker said as his career has progressed, he has learned to handle moments better. He said the more a broadcaster sees, the less surprised he is and does better at handling his emotions. He also said he has gotten a lot looser during broadcasts.

“I think what’s evolved is, I’m not afraid to throw something out there for fun, just for the heck of it,” Hunziker said.

“It’s who I am. I’m not going to fake who I am.

“I’ve had people work with me say, ‘You’re so loose.’

How else is there to be? It’s not life or death. We know what we’re doing, let’s go

do it.”

Anyone who has listened to a broadcast has heard Hunziker say, “Good night Vienna.” It is one of his coined phrases. In 2002, Hunziker’s second year at OSU, he went home to Kahoka to do a speech. While he was home, he spent some time with a friend, Bubba Cannon.

Hunziker said Cannon was an eccentric guy, stocky but not overweight, built like a prototypical catcher, which Cannon excelled at in his playing days. Cannon worked at Duer Oil Co., a stand-alone gas station in Kahoka. He said Cannon always said, “Good night Vienna” to signal the end of something.

Shortly after his trip home, Hunziker was calling OSU’s game at Kansas on Nov. 16.

With OSU leading big late in the game, Kansas running back Clark Green fumbled inside the Cowboys’ 10.

Terrence Robinson of OSU picked the ball up and ran it back for a 93-yard touchdown. As he crossed the KU 20, Hunziker yelled, “Good

night Vienna,” signaling the end of KU’s chances at a win.

The phrase carries even more meaning today for Hunziker than it did the first time he used it. Cannon died a few years ago of cancer.

Hunziker said he doesn’t have to look far on a daily basis to gain perspective. Mary Beth Hunziker is the director for the Intensive Care Unit and Respiratory Therapy at Stillwater Medical Center.

“You realize it’s just a game,” Hunziker said. “My wife reminds me of that because she works in the ICU. I don’t need to go far to be reminded of what’s important.

She’s dealing with life and death on a daily basis, and I’m worried about whether we can stop Baylor. Reality sets in real quick.”

When he isn’t working, Hunziker loves to bowl and golf. Through golf, he became close friends with Ryan Cameron, who has worked for OSU Athletics since 2001.

Cameron said he and Hunziker try to sneak in as many rounds as they can, but there is always one time during the year they go, no matter what.

As the Sports Information Director for OSU women’s basketball, Cameron works closely with the program. In 2011, Cameron was going through a tough time after Cowgirls’ coach Kurt Budke, along with assistant coach Miranda Serna, died in a plane crash in rural Arkansas. “(Hunziker) called me and said, ‘You know what we’re going to do during finals week? We’re going to go golf,’” Cameron said. “(Hunziker) said, ‘I don’t care how cold it is, I don’t care.

since then, during finals week or around that in December, no matter how cold it is, we’ll bundle up and go play at least one round of golf together in December.”

One of Cameron’s favorite memories of Hunziker involves Cameron’s grandfather, Don Cameron.

Cameron said a few times he and Hunziker went to Tulsa to play golf with Don Cameron. Cameron described his grandfather as stoic, but said he was thrilled to play golf with the voice of the Cowboys.

“We just had a blast,” Hunziker said. “Ryan is a highly, highly skilled golfer and his grandpa was perhaps even more skilled… (Don Cameron) was such a fun guy to be around. He helped me with a couple things. He helped me with my chipping, I remember that... Those were fun trips to Tulsa Country Club. They were really fun.”

Don Cameron died in 2013. As Cameron was driving away from his grandfather’s funeral, he turned the radio on to listen to the OSU basketball game. The Cowboys were in West Virginia taking on the Mountaineers.

Hunziker was doing the pregame show and gave a tribute on-air to Cameron’s grandfather.

“That meant a lot to me and my family,” Cameron said. “It was my dad’s dad.

He got to hear it, too... It made me feel good on a tough day for our family.

That’s just who he is. He goes out of his way to try and do nice things for people. That’s really at the forefront of all the good qualities that make up Dave Hunziker.”

Hunziker said he wants to be remembered as somebody

who tried his best to be fair and was a good guy who people were comfortable enough to come talk to.

He said he wants people to enjoy and look forward to listening to his broadcasts, adding how thankful he is to be the voice of the Cowboys and live in Stillwater.

Hunziker recalled a situation earlier this year before a baseball game against Kansas State on March 22. That day, a new man was working one of the cameras. Pat Gwin and Linda Davis were seated below the broadcast booth, both of whom teach at Westwood Elementary in Stillwater.

Gwin, who taught Hunziker’s daughters, Mara and Grace, turned around with Davis and talked to Hunziker for 5-10 minutes. After the conversation, the new camera operator looked at Hunziker with a puzzled face.

“Fans interacting with talent? What’s that?” the camera operator said.

Hunziker said the other camera man working, who had been around for multiple broadcasts, replied.

“That’s Oklahoma State, that’s what happens here.

This place is different.”

Hunziker, dressed in a blue sports coat with a blue and orange striped shirt, smiled as he finished the story: “I was sitting there listening to them and I said, ‘Yup, it sure is, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.’”

To Rob Walton, pitching isn’t synonymous with robotics.

Despite Walton’s reservations about baseball’s shift toward analytics, he can’t avoid the trend. With an app on his cellphone, Walton, the Oklahoma State pitching coach, can read the Cowboys’ statistics, including spin rate, release height and pitch velocity. He also can compare OSU’s data to numbers from other college pitchers and major league players such as Max Scherzer and Clayton Kershaw.

This became possible because of a gift from Andrew Heaney, a former Cowboy and pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels, and his wife, Jordan Heaney. They bought OSU a system called TrackMan, which is widely used in professional baseball and the NCAA. Walton said the Cowboys started using it early in the season.

“It’s a trial-and-error deal when it’s your first time through it,” Walton said.

The Heaneys’ investment helped the Cowboys keep up with major league clubs.

Major League Baseball’s analytics revolution has transformed pitching in ways that influence college and high school teams. Instead of focusing on earning wins and conserving the bullpen, pitchers are bombarded with statistics. Although Walton said some data are useful, if pitchers dwell on them, they might get flustered. the human dimension of baseball.

“You can’t measure somebody’s ability in a moment, their heart, their grind, their focus, their concentration, with a number,” Walton said.

The Cowboys can’t guarantee technologies such as TrackMan will work. When Walton looked at data from OSU’s series against Iowa during the first weekend in March, he noticed inaccuracies. TrackMan recorded multiple pitches, which were clearly balls, as strikes, indicating the umpire made about 25 wrong calls, he said.

“It’s not reading the strike zone correctly,” Walton said.

“So now … their execution of the pitch doesn’t come on the page correctly. It comes in much higher than it’s supposed to, so the strike zone has basically moved up like a foot.”

When TrackMan functions properly, it allows players, coaches and major league scouts to look at the Cowboys’ data, from the height where a pitcher lets go of the ball to the speed of a pitch as it whizzes across the front of home plate. Walton said he isn’t sure how much it cost, but it required installment of cables in the ground at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium to read the measurements, which download to coaches’ computers and phones.

Noah Sifrit, a sophomore pitcher and outfielder, said he benefits from the data and thanked Andrew Heaney.

“You know everything about what you did wrong, what you did right, what you need to improve on,” Sifrit said.

Technology provides teams with a wealth of information, but some players and coaches are skeptical about whether these statistics matter. Walton explained the analytics trend has changed how pitchers approach games, making baseball a drastically different sport from what it was when he played for OSU in 1983-86. Young pitchers read professional players’ data on the internet, try to model themselves after those pros and focus on throwing as hard and as quickly as they can. As they strive to achieve the best statistics, their strategy and

control of the ball are often lost.

“It’s more of carnival throwing, where you show up at the carnival, see how fast you can throw a ball, and you win the big bear,” Walton said.

This aggressive, highspeed style isn’t sustainable throughout a game, so teams are forced to rely on more pitchers. High school players on summer showcase teams might pitch for two or three innings, Walton said. College and major league starters aren’t expected to finish games. In the Cowboys’ road

shutout of Wichita State on April 10, they used nine pitchers, and none threw more than two innings.

Coaches and players might try to use mathematics to shape raw talent into flawless, machinelike pitching skill, but ERAs don’t always indicate positive change. The major league ERA climbed from 3.74 in 2014, the year before major league teams started using Statcast technology in every stadium, to 4.14 in 2018.

OSU’s ERA has risen more dramatically from 2.84 in 2015, one season before

the Cowboys advanced to the College World Series, to 4.24 in 2019. Mike Mulvihill, an outfielder and pitcher on OSU’s 1959 championship team, said he thinks analytics provide information about pitches but don’t improve them.

“You can only throw the ball so hard,” Mulvihill said.

“I think it’s a little overrated myself, but what do I know?”

Despite the modern emphases on spin rates and launch angles, some fans and former players, like Walton, appreciate the classic aspects of STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 8

Kenny Gajewski isn’t looking past Friday night’s game.

Gajewski, coach of the Oklahoma State softball team, has told his team all year the next game is the most important of the season. The Cowgirls need to sweep No. 1 Oklahoma this weekend to win the Big 12 Conference regular season title.

The series starts at 6 p.m. Friday at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater. The second game is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Marita Hynes Field in Norman.

Bedlam concludes at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cowgirl Stadium.

“You’ve got to win the first game to have that opportunity,” Gajewski said.

“It’s the most important game of the whole year and we’ll treat it like that and prepare like that.”

No. 12 OSU (37-11 overall, 13-2 Big 12) hasn’t beaten OU in 10 tries during Gajewski’s tenure. Gajewski said he’s reminded his players these games are pivotal to achieving the championship goals they set at the beginning of the season.

“It’s not an ordinary week. It’s Bedlam, it’s for the league championship,” Gajewski said. “I told them, ‘I just don’t want you to leave one stone unturned.’”

OU (45-2, 15-0) has

won 35 consecutive games. Its losses came to top-5 teams UCLA and Florida State. Gajewski said though facing OU is difficult, his players aren’t afraid.

“We’re all in,” Gajewski said. “It’s just softball when it comes down to it.”

Gajewski said this week his players requested to have early morning film sessions to prepare for the Sooners. “[It’s] something we’ve never done on a normal game week,” Gajewski said. “We were all here at 6 [a.m.]… I get the feeling that they’re really locked in.”

Samantha Show, an OSU senior pitcher and

first baseman, said from the film she watched on Monday she felt OU is ‘beatable.’ Show has a 2.30 ERA and is hitting .340 with 15 home runs.

“I don’t have to be perfect, I have a great defense behind me.” Show said.

“What Coach G said was if I make one mistake I can’t make two more after that. If I make one mistake I have to go back to being sharp.

Show, who transferred from Texas A&M in June, hasn’t faced the Sooners before.

“It’ll be fun to come into here and play OU.” Show said. “It’s senior weekend so it’ll be good.”

The Cowgirls are coming off a weekend with

three comeback victories against Texas Tech.

Gajewski said those wins, combined with an earlier comeback win against Kentucky, gave his team confidence.

“It showed this team that they can win any game, at any time, against anyone,” Gajewski said.

“This team is resilient, tough and mature.”

Madi Sue Montgomery, a senior second baseman, said the team is going to carry the momentum from the weekend into its series with the Sooners.

“I think we’re just going to ride that high that we’re on and go out there and play our game,” Montgomery said.

Montgomery has played

in several close games against OU in her career.

She said the OSU players’ mantra all season has been to focus on themselves instead of their opponents, and that isn’t changing this week.

“At the end of the day it’s still a softball game, obviously they’re good and we know they’re good,” Montgomery said.

“If we just take care of ourselves and worry about what we can do instead of worrying about who is on the other side, we’ll be just fine.”

‘Mortal Kombat 11’ might be best in franchise history Je t T ur n er,

The iconic 27-year-old fighting game is back with its latest installment in the series in “Mortal Kombat 11.”

NeatherRelm studios has done a great job with the franchise since its 2011 reboot of “Mortal Kombat,” upping the gore and violence while also picking up the quality of animation and gameplay.

“Mortal Kombat 11” continues that upward trend.

“Mortal Kombat 11” might be the best in the franchise’s history. The gameplay, story mode and characters are fantastic and will help this game stay FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2019

around for a long time.

Gameplay has been slowed down a lot across the floor.

Character walk speeds are slower, but not in a bad way.

The minor changes actually help make the fighting more engaging and balanced.

Likewise, combos have also been shortened to help balance the game so casual and advanced players can both enjoy the game more without taking away from the classic “Mortal Kombat” experience.

NeatherRelm Studios has always done an amazing job with its story mode since rebooting the series. The story mode is engaging, presenting a well thought out story with interesting new characters and twists on old characters.

The story mode brings back its signature way of telling stories by having players switch between different characters, telling the events from their point-of-view. It

keeps the longer-than-usual story mode from being boring.

Blade and more mix with new characters like Kotal Kahn, D’Vorah and the Kollector in an interesting way.

All of the new characters are engaging and bring their own special abilities, increasing the possibilities in gameplay and storyline.

My favorite characters to play as so far are Lui Kang, Kabal and the Kollector.

It is rare that a fighting game this hyped up meets or exceeds all of the standards set upon it by fans. “Mortal Kombat 11” does exactly that. From the Characters to the gameplay to the outrages story mode all the way down to the tutorials, all of it is excellent.

There is so much in this game to delve in to and so

much still unknown about this game, proving that a fighting game doesn’t merely need to be a fighting game.

Improving on an already tried and true formula is the best way to keep fans interested and coming back for more.

NeatherRelm Studios keeps making fans come back for more, proving that there is more to the “Mortal Kombat” series than blood and guts, though this installment does prove to be a “bloody” good time.

Commencement Ceremonies

The Stage Is Set OSU Commencement ceremonies scheduled for May 10-11 Oklahoma State University will graduate an estimated 4,500 students this spring and summer, and more than 3,500 are planning to participate in one of six ceremonies at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Graduation exercises start with veterinary and graduate students on Friday, May 10, and conclude Saturday, May 11, with four ceremonies for undergraduate students, each featuring a different OSU alumnus as a commencement speaker.

“We are honored to have these accomplished alumni share their insights with our students and look forward to celebrating our students’ academic achievements,” said OSU President Burns Hargis.

The Oklahoma State University Pipes and Drums Band will lead the processionals into Gallagher-Iba Arena on May 11.

Graduation candidates will be announced individually, photographed and presented an OSU Commencement print while crossing the stage.

pitching. Dick Soergel, who pitched in the 1959 championship game, said baseball is fundamentally the same as it was when people started playing.

“The technology helps to refine certain things, but the basics are there,” Soergel said.

“Baseball has always had the basics.”

For others, the basics aren’t enough when they have information banks on computers or phone screens in front of them. Although the TrackMan system misreads the strike zone, the Cowboys have other ways of gathering analytics. Walton said they record pitch velocity

without TrackMan, and he gathers data from each game’s film. He said at least 30 percent of his pitchers are interested in analytics. They have to balance keeping track of data with making sure they don’t let numbers get to their heads.

Joe Lienhard, a senior pitcher, called the analytics trend cool but said he likes a simple approach.

“There’s been plenty of guys that have helped improve their game based off looking off that stuff,” Lienhard said. “So if it can help you become a better player, definitely use it, but use it in the right way. Don’t get too

consumed in it to where it’s starting to bug you on the field.”

Access to teammates’ data could create competition, but Lienhard said he wants to pay attention to his game.

“You don’t want to get too wound up in everyone else’s stuff,” Lienhard said.

OSU will continue to partake in the analytics movement when O’Brate Stadium opens

in 2020. Walton said the new venue will be equipped with TrackMan and Rapsodo, which also tracks a range of statistics. Josh Holliday, OSU’s coach, said coaches need to analyze information obtained from technology and present it to players in ways that facilitate growth.

“I think if it’s applicable and understandable in ways that kids can learn, then it’s fantastic,” Holliday said.

“If it’s just a bunch of gibberish and numbers that confuse people, then I could do without it.”

The Cowboys are waiting to learn from Rapsodo and a fully

functioning TrackMan system, but it’s no problem for Walton. As a former scout for the Cleveland Indians, Walton said he can keenly observe the seams of a baseball flying toward home plate and quickly determine the pitch’s spin rate.

“Your eyes do adjust, and they do get the chance to see what you need to see,” Walton said. “And TrackMan just basically allows you to validate what you’re seeing.”
