As he silently stood on the brick ledge in front of Library Lawn, Edgar Ibarra held a poster that read, “Why does our future depend on a decision someone else makes?”

Ibarra, a senior nutritional science major, recalled how DACA has benefited the lives of people he cares for.

“I am not a DACA recipient, but I have a good five or six friends that are,” Ibarra said. “So I am out here supporting those people and their dreams.

Even though [DACA] does not affect me directly, it affects me indirectly, and I want to be there as a support system for those people.”

On Tuesday, Ibarra and about 90 other participants, including students, faculty and community members, protested the recent Executive push to retire the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

Voto Latino organized the silent protest. Ibarra said Voto Latino is an organization that helps raise the number of registered Latino and Hispanic voters and promotes the benefits of voter participation.

Voto Latino organized the protest to “be there for our DACA brothers and sisters and stand in solidar-

ity against all acts of hate,” according to the Facebook event page for the protest.

Ibarra stated he played a role in planning the protest alongside Amanda Sandoval, a senior political science major. Sandoval said she saw a need for the protest when she realized how it could affect students on campus.

Editorial: Ending DACA cruel, un-American O’Colly Editorial Board @Ocolly

We are at history’s mercy.

Our actions today decide what our children and grandchildren will one day read in textbooks.

How will they talk about the Dreamers? What if one of our sons or daughters come home from school and ask us if we ever knew a Dreamer?

On Tuesday, about 100 students, faculty and staff took time out of their day to stand up for what they believe in. The O’Colly editorial board commends and stands with OSU’s DACA students against

President Donald Trump’s decision. It is heartless, cowardly and short-sighted.

If the White House is truly concerned with criminals and smugglers at the heart of the illegal immigration crisis, ending DACA is not a place to start.

DACA students live with constant scrutiny, knowing even a serious misdemeanor like a DUI or possession of a controlled substance could mean deportation.

To say they are part of the problem is ignorant and asinine.

More than 9,000 Oklahomans qualify for DACA,

according to a 2012 Oklahoma Policy Institute estimate. Those Oklahomans likely had no say in their parents’ decision to come to America illegally or overstay their visa.

Many know America, not Mexico or Latin America, as their home.

Some don’t speak enough Spanish to continue their education or use a degree they’ve worked for in America.

Others have spent the past five years not only working and studying under DACA but actively seeking a legal path to citizenship and spending thousands of dollars on im-

migration attorneys.

Turning away nearly 800,000 hard-working, taxpaying people is definitively cruel and un-American.

We cannot sit idly by and watch this happen.

Legal arguments aside, it’s inhuman to do this to so many people. Call your representative back home or here in Oklahoma. Do everything you can to make sure congress fixes this mistake.

If we don’t, we’ll have to explain this to our children and grandchildren. They will read about the Dreamers and wonder why our country acted this way.

Oklahoma State left tackle Aaron Cochran sat on a training table when offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich approached him and told him he had a good game.

Cochran, who helped the Cowboys rush for 332 yards in Thursday’s 59-24 victory against Tulsa, shook his head.

“He acknowledged the fact that he has more to improve,” Yurcich said. “That’s a great sign.”

Cochran, a graduate transfer from Cal, has lost about 30 pounds since coming to Stillwater in the fall. After weighing more than 360 pounds upon his arrival, the 6-foot-8 anchor on the offensive line has dropped to 332 pounds.

Yurcich doesn’t know whether Cochran’s weight loss should continue but has an idea of how the pounds were shed.

“Whenever I drop weight it’s usually because I gotta push away from the dinner table,” Yurcich said. “I think that usually comes into play, right? You have to sleep well, you have to eat well, you have to be balanced in your lifestyle, so credit to him for being squared away enough from just a maturity standpoint to know what’s important to him.”

The departure of former left tackle Victor Salako, now an NFL free agent, left a hole in the Cowboys’ offensive line. Cochran more than fills it.

OSU coach Mike Gundy said he was pleased with Cochran’s first game considering he had been in Stillwater for only a few months before making his Cowboy debut, but Cochran thought differently.

Rudolph perhaps has the most to gain from a strong offensive line. Cochran, who will protect Rudolph’s blindside this season, watched extra film when he arrived, Rudolph said.

“Whenever you add a new piece to the puzzle, like we did with Aaron, and with Victor Salako a couple of years ago, reps are the only way to get the entire unit on the same page,”

Rudolph said. “I think we’ve done that through camp and through summer; we’re past that.”

The difference in temperature and humidity is another change Cochran must become accustomed to. Stillwater is typically more hot and humid than Cal’s campus, which is near the Pacific Ocean.

The temperature peaked at 87 degrees Thursday and is predicted to reach 87 again with 46 percent humidity in Mobile, Alabama, where the Cowboys play Friday.

“The more reps he gets, the better he’s going to be,” Yurcich said. “And he knows that.”
