Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy seemed content with the Cowboys’ bowl destination Sunday.

After a 9-3 season, OSU will play No. 22 Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl at 4:15 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 28 in Orlando. The game will be televised on ESPN. “This will be new for our team,” Gundy said in a teleconference. “We haven’t been down to a bowl in Orlando. We had a team meeting earlier and our players were really excited.”

Heading into Championship Saturday, the No. 19 Cowboys’ future depended on TCU’s destiny. If the No. 15 Horned Frogs were selected for a New Year’s Six bowl, OSU would have most likely returned to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas, where it handled Colorado 38-8 last year. But when No. 2 Oklahoma thumped TCU 41-17 in the Big 12 championship game Saturday, the Horned Frogs slipped out of the top 12 in the final College Football Playoff rankings of the season, leaving the conference without a team competing in a New Year’s Six bowl and dropping OSU down to the Camping World Bowl as the third-best team in the Big 12. TCU will take on Pac-12 runner-up Stanford in the Alamo Bowl, also on Dec. 28.

Alamo Bowl, setting high expectations for the Cowboys this season. Individually, Rudolph and Washington are finalists for the Davey O’Brien Award and Fred Biletnikoff, respectively, given to the best player at each position.

Washington was also one of four unanimous selections on the All-Big 12 first team.

But despite the plethora of returning talent, the Cowboys posted the same record and earned a less-respected bowl bid a year later. OSU lost three games—all at Boone Pickens Stadium—to OU, TCU and Kansas State after notching the same regular-season record as last year. The Cowboys also dropped a spot in the final Big 12 standings from No. 2 to the third spot with a 6-3 conference record.

“I just don’t see our season as a disappointment,” Gundy said. “I know that we all want to make the final four (College Football Playoff), but winning nine games is difficult.”

Virginia Tech has a matching 9-3 record from the Atlantic Coastal Conference, where the Hokies finished second in the coastal division behind Miami (FL). Virginia Tech lost games to Miami, Clemson and Georgia Tech, with Georgia Tech being the only deficit from a team outside the top 10.

The Hokies will hold the first advantage with a 697mile trip compared to OSU’s 1,291-mile trek.

With the exception of the suite and club rooms of Boone Pickens Stadium, alcohol hasn’t been allowed or made available for sale to the public at any Oklahoma State athletic venue.

This will change in the near future, however.

The Oklahoma State/ A&M Board of Regents, a committee that establishes policies that affect institutions such as the university, approved a policy change Friday regarding the sale of alcohol.

The change will allow OSU to sell alcoholic beverages to fans at baseball games this spring as part of a pilot program.

Alcohol is not allowed in the general seating areas of any athletic venue such as Boone Pickens Stadium or Gallagher-Iba Arena. In fact, the only place the possession and consumption of alcohol was permitted to the general public on campus was in designated tailgate areas on game days.

The pilot program is scheduled to begin at Cowboy baseball games next semester. Fans will be able to purchase and enjoy a beer while taking in a game at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium during the season.

In general, people’s reactions around town have been positive.

to bring in a lot more income for the college,” said Tyler Mackey, a frequent attendee of OSU football and basketball games. “As far as tailgating goes, there is already tons of alcohol around, so I think it will just help keep it in check. There are people that try to sneak it in all the time anyways so at least it’s being monitored.”

Mackey doesn’t see any potential drawbacks to the new change.

“The people that are gonna drink and cause a ruckus are going to do it anyways, so I don’t think it will make the problem more relevant than it already is,” Mackey said.

He also thinks the

dedication of fans in Stillwater is a big part of why there won’t be any major issues caused by selling alcohol in OSU athletic venues.

“I feel, especially in our community here, the sports come first so I don’t think it will change the environment too much,” Mackey said.

“Maybe at some other schools but it’s close knit here in Stillwater.”

Brenden Winters is another supporter of the pilot program.

“Kids are going to sneak it in anyways, so you might as well make money off of it,” Winters said. “I’m pretty indifferent about it, but I think it’s a good idea.”

He does acknowledge one potential issue, however.

“The student section maybe could get out of hand if they are able to drink,” Winters said.

“It might change the environment a little bit because I think students might have a hard time keeping their mouths shut.”

Generally, this is the one drawback that people seem to have with selling alcohol at collegiate sporting events. It has the potential to make fans more unruly and troublesome.

However, Kaleb Mackey believes the policy change could potentially have a positive effect in

the stands.

“I think it will change the atmosphere a lot,” Mackey said. “If they are going to do this, I would not allow readmittance into the game if people leave, so I think it will keep the fans longer and make the crowd more rowdy.

“I think it’s a great idea. It’s a whole lot of revenue the school can bring in and it will make the games more enjoyable for fans.”

Mackey also feels that more schools should follow OSU’s lead in this respect.

“I think more schools should go this direction,” Mackey said. “I mean the money you bring in can help the school in a lot of ways and help the athletic program” OSU will join West Virginia and Texas as the only other schools in the Big 12 to allow alcohol sales at the schools’ sporting venues. Many other universities are trending in this direction, however.

Recently, colleges such as Houston, Tulsa, Tulane, Purdue and Ohio State have either introduced or expanded alcohol sales in their sports arenas. Houston and UT even have partnership deals with beer companies.

Both Winters and Mackey believe other schools should follow suit.

“UT does it and they make money off it so we will definitely make

money off it,” Winters said. “I think other schools will start doing it. I think they should.”

Tyler Mackey says the transition is inevitable.

“I think all schools will end up going towards that because it is a condition in our society that it’s going to happen,” he said.

Some other students are indifferent about the proposal.

Thomas Zeleskey, a senior and dedicated fan who has yet to miss a football or basketball game over his first seven semesters at OSU, is apprehensive about the proposal.

“I’m a big baseball fan, and I have always thought alcohol should be sold at baseball games, but I don’t think it should be available to college students here,” Zeleskey said. “I think it’s a bad idea only because I’ve seen what it can do to people at games.”

Zeleskey says he understands why OSU elected to go in this direction, though.

“I’m not totally against it,” Zeleskey said. “I understand they are doing to make money.

But I think they should be wary of it if they’re gonna start selling alcohol.”

The Oklahoma State men’s basketball team defeated Mississippi Valley State 83-62 Sunday in front of 4,564 people. The Cowboys moved to 7-1 this season as they prepare to host No. 8 Wichita State on Saturday.

OSU crowds have averaged 4,547 people this season, including OSU’s exhibition game against Arkansas-Monticello. Across social media, the Cowboy “faithful” have had a few excuses as to why attending MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2017

Well, OSU has won seven games by an average of 23 points, and the Cowboys’ only loss is to undefeated No. 9 Texas A&M. “I know that there’s a great contingent of basketball fans for Oklahoma State University,” OSU coach Mike Boynton said. “We have a team here that’s trying to represent them in the right way, playing really hard, having some success. I want our guys to know that they’re appreciated.”

Another excuse is, “OSU hasn’t played anybody.”

Kansas has sold out all seven of its home games this year. The Jayhawks played Pittsuburg State, Fort Hays State and Tennessee State in exhibition games this season at Allen Fieldhouse, but no matter the opponent, 16,300 people crowded into the

arena.

Kentucky, also a 7-1 team, has averaged 19,772 people in Rupp Arena through the Wildcats’ opening 10 home games, though they’ve played teams such as Thomas More College, Centre College and Utah Valley.

Kansas, but if fans want their team to be at that level, there is a part the fans need to play.

As of now, the team is doing its part, but the fans have been a letdown.

Even Wichita State, which has an enrollment of about 10,000 less than OSU, is averaging 9,439 people a game.

Saturday, however, when the one-loss Cowboys do play a top-tier opponent, there are no more excuses.

“As we continue to play better, and probably as we play better competition, they’ll show up more,” Boynton said. “We show up and try to play the best every day because that’s our responsibility. We hope our fans will not just show up when we’re playing certain teams because in some ways that’s sending a message they’re not necessarily coming to watch us.”

On Nov. 16, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill intended to reduce corporate taxes, allowing companies to spend more on research and development, but colleges and universities would take a hit with the same tax reform bill.

The bill sparked controversy with colleges for its provision to tax tuition waivers for graduate students and employees.

Graduate programs around the country fund graduate students through scholarships and fellowships that cover their cost of living in return for working as teaching and research assistants.

As many as 25 percent of all graduate students across the country receive a tuition waiver, according to the Los Angeles Times website.

Many graduate students and educators across the country voiced their opinions and concerns about the proposed tax reform.

Before the Senate bill passed, Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis and Sheryl Tucker, vice provost and dean of the OSU Graduate College, voiced opposition to the bill in a press release.

“Oklahoma State University has joined with the voices of graduate and higher education advocacy groups and institutions across the country to oppose this potential tax on graduate students serving in teaching and research positions,” Hargis and Tucker

said in the press release.

“As a land-grant university, graduate teaching and research assistants (GTAs and GRAs) are essential to our mission in teaching, research and service.

“OSU is committed to ensuring that GTA and GRA positions continue as part of the graduate educational experience.”

Graduate students with fellowships spend between 20 and 40 hours working while attending classes and performing research, according to the Los Angeles Times. Under the previous tax code, the government could tax certain types of fellowship funding but not tuition waivers.

Early Saturday morning, the Senate passed its version of the bill, which did not include the tax on graduate student tuition waivers. But before it is sent to President Donald Trump, it must be reconciled with the House bill, according to The Washington Post.

With the House’s version of the tax reform, graduate students’ cost of living

would increase drastically.

When a $50,000 tuition wavier is included as taxable income, students who make $25,000 per year would be taxed as if they made $75,000 per year, which is a 400 percent increase in their taxes, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Los Angeles Times also reported the Senate and House bills would make it more difficult to itemize charitable contributions, which could reduce donations to nonprofit universities and other organizations by as much as $13 billion annually.

Tucker said there are about 900 graduate assistants and about 1,000 research assistants on OSU’s campus. These GTAs and GRAs have an average income of $14,000 per year,

Tucker said.

“Forty percent of our master’s students and 60 percent of our doctoral students receive tuition waivers to come grad school,” Tucker said. “If the (House) tax reform passes, we will see the number of research and teaching assistants drop significantly here at OSU and I’m guessing around the country as well.”

Jen Hudgens, who is pursuing a master’s of fine arts in creative writing at OSU, said taxing tuition waivers is not a good idea because graduate students struggle to make ends meet as it is.

“I think taxing tuition waivers is a terrible idea,” Hudgens said. “Most grad students wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the waivers.

I think it’s ridiculous that we’re going to pay taxes on money that we really don’t even get.”

Hudgens said Congress is not seeing the bigger picture.

“Graduate students can’t get a second job because we’re in grad school,” Hudgens said. “If the tax reform goes through, I will not be able to go to graduate school and probably be working at a job I hated and still have loan debt from my undergraduate to pay.”

Taxing tuition waivers would affect future research and the future of the higher education. Nick Kuburich, a doctoral microbiology student, said he believes tax reform will affect his future.

“The new tax plan would not affect me directly since I’m about to (graduate),” Kuburich said. “It will

affect me when I enter academia because I will not have as many research assistants in my lab helping me research. It could reduce the work force.”

The bill affects U.S. citizens as well as international students. International students are not able to get a second job because their work visas will not allow them to work outside their department and their university. Asger Ali, a graduate student from Bangladesh, is pursuing a master’s degree in sociology and said he did not want the tax bill to pass.

“Graduate study in the U.S.A is very expensive,” Ali said. “Without funding assistantship, it will be very difficult for me to survive because I belong to a middle-income family, and my parents don’t make that extensive amount (of) money which they can spend (on) my education.”

Many graduate students fear for the future of higher education in the United States.

Hillary Coenen, a doctoral English rhetoric major, said she is lucky she entered graduate school when she did.

“If tuition waivers were taxed when I entered grad school, I would not have gone,” Coenen said. “If I was an undergraduate student now and tuition waivers were taxed, I would be discouraged to go.”

Samantha Davis, a mechanical engineering sophomore at Oklahoma State, has one final exam on Monday, another on Wednesday and two finals on Friday.

Davis said she finds it challenging to stay motivated during Dead Week.

“I always tell myself I’m going to study during Dead Week, but when it comes down to it, I’m always like, ‘I’m going to sleep during Dead Week,’” Davis said. “So, I will probably start studying early Sunday morning and work from there.”

Pre-finals week, known to students and faculty as Dead Week, is dedicated to allowing students to prepare for their final exams, according to the Oklahoma State University registrar’s website. Dead Week begins seven days before the first day of finals.

Although students are required to attend classes, OSU’s policy states during this time, “no assignment, test, or examination accounting for more than five percent of the course grade may be given and no activity or field trip may be scheduled that conflicts with another class.”

Kelly Kavalier, an OSU academic adviser, believes there is misinterpretation of what dead week is.

“I think the concept of Dead Week is misleading with a lot of students because when we call it Dead Week, they assume they MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2017

don’t have anything to do,” Kavalier said. “And a lot of students assume that that means they don’t need to do stuff for class or be preparing for class.

“Whereas (for) faculty members, it is still a week in the semester. They are still teaching class. They are still presenting new material, and the expectation is that students show up and participate.”

After a week of challenging assignments, Davis said she appreciates the break Dead Week provides.

“There are usually fewer assignments, which I like,” Davis said. “For me, it provides a mental break before I get down into finals week.”

Despite the Dead Week policy, many students find themselves having final exams during the week dedicated for studying.

Alex Franco, a finance sophomore, is in a geology class that will have its final Tuesday. He said originally this caused confusion for him, but he ultimately realized it could help him in the long run.

“We aren’t supposed to have any finals on that week,” Franco said. “But I (would) almost rather have that one test on Dead Week rather than add it on my busier week with three to four other tests when this one might not be as hard as the others.”

Kavalier said she believes the policy is put into place to avoid any surprises for students, and it is OK for professors to give assignments and final exams to their classes as long as it

“I think overall, the goal is that we don’t want to give the students a ton of new stuff, but at the same time it’s another week during the semester,” Kavalier said. “If we took off Dead Week from the standpoint of teaching then a couple years later, students would say the week before that week is really Dead Week; we should stop two weeks before finals.”

Although she does not have finals during Dead Week this semester, Davis said finals during Dead Week are not ideal.

“I dislike finals and large projects during Dead Week because that’s the week I spend preparing for the upcoming week,” Davis said.

“If I have finals or projects during Dead Week, I usually find myself stressing over a two-hour class when I should worry about my fourhour classes.”

Cheryl DeVuyst, an agricultural economics professor, said she believes it is unfair to students to go against the university’s policy.

“I can’t make a decision for another faculty member, and I can’t make a decision for the administrators in the colleges of the faculty members that decide to do that,” DeVuyst said. “I choose to follow the rules. I think we have a finals week posted for a reason. Before you enroll in a class, you know when your finals are going to be.

Many students and faculty have strong opinions when it comes to dates of finals as well as material instructors present during the classes of Dead Week.

“I would always prefer if professors gave us a lot of review, especially with stuff from the beginning of the semester because that is the stuff I forget by this point,” Davis said. “And it is usually the simpler stuff that will trip me up during an exam.”

DeVuyst said she has a certain protocol when it comes to preparing her students for their final.

“I don’t give any assignments, anything like that,” DeVuyst said. “I actually give their last big test right before Dead Week because

I don’t want to have all that issue. And then I make sure that right before finals during Dead Week, I give them their grades in the class to that point so they understand where they are at and what they would need on a final to get them to the next higher grade.”

DeVuyst said she encourages students to take advantage of the resources available during Dead Week.

“I have some great teaching assistants, and they try to hold more office hours,” DeVuyst said. “I pretty much make sure that I am here all the time during Dead Week, and the sad thing is, very few students actually come in for help.”

Kavalier said the best way to have a successful Dead Week is to stay organized and balance out the week.

“The big thing is making sure you know what you need to do, and then prioritizing it,” Kavalier said.

“The other thing is making sure you are planning time for yourself. I think a lot of times, students tend to put things off or procrastinate, and then they stay up late, and don’t get enough sleep, and they don’t remember to eat and they don’t remember to take care of themselves.

“If they would have planned ahead and actually stuck with that plan, I think a lot of times you are able to get that personal time that you need.”
