Lindy Waters III grinned and waved at the crowd of people who lined the street to see him.

As he traveled the parade route in a pickup truck his dad drove, children dribbled basketballs and held a banner to introduce him. The vehicle displayed a large photograph of Waters in his Oklahoma State men’s basketball uniform.

Attention surrounded him throughout the festivities, from the parade the morning of Aug. 15 to the final powwow Saturday night.

Waters, a junior guard for the Cowboys, earned recognition as the Indian of the Year at the 83rd annual American Indian Exposition in Anadarko.

The four-day celebration included a powwow each night and two parades.

Waters received his award Saturday night at the Caddo County Fair-

ground.

As Indian of the Year, Waters followed in the footsteps of famous people, including singers Willie Nelson and Crystal Gayle. He could have boasted about the honor, but he remained humble.

“Growing up, I’ve always had people to help me along the way,” Waters said in an Orange Power Studios video.

“I’ve always had gyms to come play basketball in, people to get advice from, and a lot of Natives out there, they don’t have that, and it’s really important for me to give it back to them.”

Waters learned about the generous, unselfish principles of his Native American culture from family.

As the third Lindy B. Waters, he has a Kiowa name, “Pao,” which means “number three.”

Waters never met the original Lindy Waters, his grandfather and a pastor. He died long before Waters was born, but Waters honors his namesake

with a picture of him tattooed on his chest.

Waters’ dad is half Kiowa and half Cherokee. His mom, Lisa, is one-sixteenth Cherokee, though her Native American lineage isn’t formalized.

They raised their children to embrace connections to both tribes, attending Kiowa and Cherokee celebrations.

“It’s not just something that they learn in a book,” Waters II, his dad, said. “It’s something that they’ve lived and experienced by going to the events.”

Waters’ attire at the American Indian Exposition reflected his pride in OSU and his Native American heritage. His traditional ribbon shirts, which his aunt made, featured orange as a prominent color. A family friend designed moccasins for him as a 21st birthday gift, intricately beading OSU symbols on the sides.

During the summer, Waters stayed busy, traveling internationally with his Cowboy basketball teammates before the American Indian Exposition.

Waters barely had time for a break between OSU’s European

tour and his appearance in the first parade. He arrived home in Norman at about 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 15, staying up and talking to his family about his travels until about 4 a.m., his dad said.

After only three hours of sleep, Waters woke up and prepared for the parade.

“As a dad, I’m just really blown away with how well he’s handling college life, being a role model and also keeping everything in perspective and knowing what his priorities are and also how humble he’s continuing to be,” Waters II said.

Nearly 70 of Waters’ extended family mem-

bers gathered to celebrate him at a picnic with traditional food, including meat, corn and fry bread. He met tribal princesses at a reception in downtown Anadarko. The intertribal council gave Waters a plaque that bears his name in glimmering gold letters. Cherokee Nation TV: “O’SiyoVoices of the Cherokee People” is going to produce a documentary about him.

As people honor him, he maintains the selfless mentality his family instilled in him.

Although Waters is starting his junior year, he and his family already have plans for Senior Day at OSU. His

dad told the Cowboy basketball coaches he wants to have a giveaway ceremony to thank them before Waters’ last game.

“Within our culture, it’s just being real humble and just keep everything in perspective,” Waters II said.

“That’s just a way to stay humble is by giving away a lot of the things that mean something to you to other people that have helped you.”

Jason Mraz’s new album offers a story of love paired with a laidback beat.

1. “Let’s See What the Night Can Do” Jason Mraz sets the tone of the album with this intro. Right away, listeners can tell this is a happy, upbeat type of album. It has potential to give listeners good memories and feelings.

2. “Have It All” This song reminded

me of the first song I knew by Mraz, “I’m Yours”. Both songs have the upbeat summer vibe.

Mraz sings about someone who means a lot to him. The line “you don’t need money, you got a free pass,” speaks to me that maybe this song is to a child or girl.

3. “More Than Friends” (feat. Meghan Trainor) The man in the song doesn’t want to be foolish, but he really likes a girl. He and Meghan Trainor are going to “take it easy.” Not much out of this song, just 3 minutes of almost the

same words, but it’s upbeat, happy and the guy gets the girl.

4. “Unlonely” In this song, the friendship or couple is still taking it slowly, as the guy wants to be “homies.”

5. “Better with You” At this point in the album, it sounds like the same song with slightly different words and beats. It is not a bad first half, but the last half of the album can be better.

6. “No Plans” “No Plans” is a good switch from the previous songs with a more relaxing, slower pace.

This reminds me of a lazy Sunday afternoon type of song, not bad.

7. “Sleeping to Dream” The country side of Mraz comes out. He sleeps just to dream about a girl and never stops thinking about her.

8. “Making It Up” Imagine walking down the street to the beat of a song. This song provides an easy-

going beat paired with easygoing lyrics. The lyrics in this song are about making things up as you go.

9. “Might as Well Dance” The song brings a throwback style to the album and adds a little guitar solo in the middle of the song.

This album is reminiscent of a Disney love story. It has a rising action, climax and resolution. At the beginning, the sound builds up toward track five, which sounds a lot like the previous songs, then builds down to round out the album. It was not a bad album but could have been stronger.

“The Package,” directed by Jake Szymanski, is a Netflix original teen comedy that does not offer many laughs.

The plot centers on an accident that takes place on a camping trip. The unfortunate incident sends a group of teenagers on a journey to the hospital. The movie also follows the teenagers on a “coming of age” adventure.

The side plots are also weird. Becky is on a quest to save her brother’s severed penis and yet Donnie and Sarah are constantly telling Sean and Becky to go for it. Every sweet moment they have together is always brought to a halt with the reminder that they are carrying a severed penis. Sean and Becky attempt a relationship while trying to get Jeremy’s body part back to him. Their relationship adds nothing to the overall plot, but it does sometimes offer a distraction from all the awkwardness.

The plot of the movie is too simple. Sean Floyd (Daniel Doheny) and his friends Donnie (Luke Spencer Roberts) and Jeremy (Eduardo Franco) are set to go on an annual

spring break campout when Jeremy’s sister Becky (Geraldine Viswanathan) and her best friend Sarah (Sadie Calvano) decide to tag along. This is great news for Sean, who has crushed on Becky for years and is finally ready to make a move.

The group heads to the mountains to set up camp and begin to party. After becoming thoroughly drunk, Jeremy accidentally cuts off his “package.” Paramedics take Jeremy to the hospital, but his friends quickly realize they accidentally gave the paramedics the cooler with the beer instead of Jeremy’s dismembered penis. It is then up to them to make sure his “package” is delivered safely.

The plot provides ample opportunity for jokes and laughs, but the movie does not come through. Certain situations are supposed to be funny but come off as more uncomfortable than anything else.

The side plots are also weird. Sean and Becky attempt a relationship while trying to get Jeremy’s body part back to him.

There are parts of the movie that offer laughs. The Triage Nurse (Mary Holland), who tends to Jeremy in the hospital, is consistently funny. Her sassy attitude quips are perfectly timed, making their interactions a bright spot in the movie.

“The Package” offers few genuinely funny moments but, despite its best efforts, is more cringe-worthy than laugh-worthy.

It would have taken one second to do.

I applied to Oklahoma State University in January 2015 and received my admission letter a month later. I cruised through high school the rest of year and prepared for the summer.

Every box on my preparation list was ticked. But for six months I forgot to write a certain thing on that list.

For six months I never checked where the school was.

My naïve thought was, “It’s Oklahoma State University, a state school, so it must be in Oklahoma City.”

The concept of a college town wasn’t in my mind back then.

Before college I spent my entire life in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. I already knew Oklahoma City wasn’t going to be a booming metropolis, but I boarded the 27-hour flight expecting there to be some decent things to do there.

The International Student Organization had a greeting service at the Will Rogers Airport, where I boarded a bus to where I thought was going to be within the Oklahoma City city limits.

It didn’t take long to realize the painful truth.

Once I saw the road sign saying I was leaving the city, I laughed at myself for assuming OSU was tucked away downtown.

The night before my flight, I couldn’t sleep that much because I

was too excited to travel abroad for the first time.

Fear replaced all the excitement during the onehour trip to Stillwater as I saw nothing but the farm fields fly by on both sides of Interstate 35.

There were three students on the bus with me, but I was too embarrassed to say a word.

For the entire one-hour ride, I was fearful of how boring my college life was going to be, and that I would have to spend four years here.

Fast forward three years and here I am, alive and well, entering my senior year at OSU. Stillwater is a small town, but it isn’t that small. Several of my OSU friends come from smaller towns that have one or two places to go to, and they’ve lived there for their entire lives.

Before I took off to what I thought was Oklahoma City, most of my friends in Vietnam who also study abroad

were worried about how boring their college town would be. My sister went to Colgate University for college, and she always complained about how it took her an hour to find a decent dining place or convenience store.

I’ve returned home a couple of times, and the atmosphere of traveling and living in a 1,285 square mile city comprised of building after building is what I miss the most about Hanoi.

Some of my friends at OSU suffer from culture shock when they move to a city larger than what they’re used to.

My case is the total opposite, but every time I board the 27-hour flight I know I’ll never be bored in Stillwater.
