Fifteen thousand nine hundred forty.

That’s how many parking spaces there are on the Oklahoma State University campus.

That might not seem like many compared to the more than 20,000 students enrolled, but the majority of parking spaces are for daily commuters. That means there are people coming from and going to campus frequently, opening up parking spaces.

With that much parking available, one might wonder why there are so many complaints about parking on campus.

Finding places to park is an important part of many OSU students’ and faculty’s daily routines. Some have an easier time doing it than others.

Part of the confusion this year comes from the loss of lots 52E and 49E, where the new teaching greenhouse is under construction behind University Health Services. To compensate for the loss of these parking lots, University Parking and Transportation Services added Lot 75 on the west side of the soccer stadium. It also created Lot 99 where Cordell Hall once resided and

increased the number of parking spots north of the Monroe Parking Garage. These changes made more parking spaces available than there were last year.

Despite OSU employees’ efforts to provide more parking places, many daily commuters are still struggling to find spots.

Expired meter and wrong zone parking tickets are two of the most common violations Parking Services gives. Since fall 2016, of the 115,795 tickets given, 21,651 were for expired meters, and 14,753 were for wrong zone parking. This semester, there have been 834 expired meter citations and 997 wrong zone parking citations given.

Carrie HulseyGreene, the associate director of OSU Communications, said there is a lot of thought and planning that goes into parking plans on campus.

People complain about the limited parking next to their classroom buildings or workplaces, but there are other spaces to park on campus. Spradling and Hulsey-Greene said Parking Services is doing everything it can to make parking as simple and convenient as possible.

“It’s more than slapping down parking lots and painting spaces,” Hulsey-Greene said.

“It’s a huge balancing act.”

“The concert is important because it will show that showing compassion is not an expectation, but it’s a duty that all people need to show compassion and that all people need to be like Claire,” Golliver said. “The student I currently have doesn’t want to be treated any differently than any other person.

Richard Hansen, coordinator of Veteran Student Academic Services, has invited Grace to perform the national anthem for many veteran events since 2015.

After getting to know Grace, Hansen said her talent and charity work impressed him.

“She’s a phenomenal young girl,” Hansen said. “She’s doing things at the age of 16 that most adults would never do in their lifetime.”

The others in the concert lineup are OSU student and Spotify artist Cole Norton and Triana Browne, a former OSU track star and Miss Oklahoma 2017.

Grace said she thought the two guests are perfect for her concert.

“When I first heard Cole’s music, I was like, ‘This is really good,’” Grace said.

“Then I said, ‘This would be a perfect fit

for the concert.’”

Norton said Grace’s talent impressed him after he saw her perform.

“She has a really amazing voice,” Norton said. “I’m really impressed at her ability to move around on stage and sing because I know how hard that is.”

Norton said he can’t wait to perform for the people and for the Show Compassion Foundation.

“It’s an honor knowing that I would be considered for such a charitable event,” Norton said. “Knowing my voice can help raise money for a good cause means the world to me.”

The concert will spread a message about Grace’s foundation and share how one act of kindness can go a long way.

The Saturday show will take place at 7 p.m.

Sunday’s show is at 2 p.m. in the Seretean Center. Tickets for the concert are $10 online and $15 at the door.

Proceeds will go to the Show Compassion Foundation.

“It will be the best concert you’re ever going to see for $10,” Grace said.

Oklahoma State’s most experienced wide receiver entering the season is no longer with the team.

OSU football coach Mike Gundy announced at his weekly press conference Monday that senior receiver Jalen McCleskey will leave the Cowboy football team.

Gundy said McCleskey talked to him Monday morning and decided to redshirt this season, meaning he will sit out OSU’s remaining games and transfer.

“He did not feel good with us getting the ball to him, so he’s decided to redshirt and transfer,” Gundy said. “So we’re gonna let

him sit the rest of the year.

“He’s been awesome for us, I hated to see it … Great young man, great family. He just didn’t feel like he was getting the ball enough and wants to save his year and sit and transfer to another school.”

McCleskey has started the Cowboys’ four games this season in the slot and leaves the program sixth all-time in receptions with 167. He had at least one catch in 41 of his 43 games with the Cowboys.

McCleskey is able to redshirt because of the NCAA’s new rule implemented this season. It allows for individuals to play in up to four games and still redshirt.

that there are some loopholes in it he doesn’t think the NCAA representatives considered.

“The NCAA is gonna have to take a hard look

because right now the rules, forget Jalen’s situation, the rules don’t allow us to add a number to that (the roster),” Gundy said. “Let’s say you have five guys do it

(transfer), now we’re playing with 80, not 85, on scholarship. I can’t replace those numbers.”

Gundy said Landon Wolf, a redshirt sophomore from Tulsa, will take McCleskey’s spot in the slot.

Wolf received a scholarship entering the 2018 season after walking on his first two seasons.

He has yet to record a reception in a Cowboy uniform but made an impact on special teams last season.

“Last year, my redshirt freshman year, I played all special teams and barely played any offense,” Wolf said. “The thing for me was just showing them that I had more value than just an offensive player so I could make the travel squad.”

Although Wolf didn’t start or get many reps on offense, he got plenty of reps in practice with quarterback Taylor Cornelius, who is now the starter. That has led to a chemistry between Wolf and the Cowboys’ signal caller.

“Me and Corn (Cornelius) worked together last year on scout team and the year before, so we have a little bit of chemistry,” Wolf said. “I definitely want to be a security blanket for any quarterback that’s in the game.

“I’m grateful. I’m ready to take full advantage.”

We get it. Oklahoma State has more students commuting than it has parking spaces on campus.

This is not a new phenomenon at OSU. It has been going on for years.

Just a few months ago, historic Cordell Hall was torn down to make room for more spaces.

Many people are still complaining about not finding spots.

Instead of complaining, we as a student body need to find a way to fix this ordeal.

What grinds my gears is how students

who live on campus and drive to class still complain. They, of all people, should be the last ones complaining about parking.

One, our campus is not big enough that most people can’t walk.

Two, even if you are unable to walk, OSU has a marvelous bus system.

It connects all of OSU and the greater Stillwater community.

The buses stop at most of the off-campus apartment complexes and places such as Walmart and the Stillwater airport.

The bus is especially helpful for people who live off campus.

My friend and former roommate lives at the Reserve on Perkins, and for the first month, he didn’t have a car. He saw no problem in taking a bus to campus and taking one back to his apartment.

Too many times, OSU buses are empty, and drivers are waiting for one or two people to pick up. Students are not taking advantage of the public transportation that is a part of their tuition.

We can all say, “Let’s just tear down more places to add parking,” but demolishing structures is not cheap.

As an out-of-state stu-

dent, I’m already paying almost $38,000 a year.

During the summer, tuition for out-of-state students increased more than $700.

The price of demolition will fall on us, the students, who have to sit with smiles and say, “Yes, I’d love to pay more to go here.”

Honestly, I’m paying only so I don’t have to deal with harsh Massachusetts winters.

Students don’t know how lucky they are to have parking. Many colleges do not allow freshmen or sophomores to have cars on campus.

plan set in action that is unbiased and combats the problem.

Here’s a simple plan that will be unpopular, but it has potential to work: Give different parking passes: ones for residential spots and ones for parking for class.

Give parking pass priority to upperclassmen.

Give parking pass priority to students coming into Stillwater from other towns.

Use public transportation more often.

One place that seems to always have spaces is the overflow lot behind the new baseball field.

It has plenty of places

for students to park.

Many people do not want to park there because it’s too far from the central part of OSU’s campus. Well, luckily, the buses pass through that overflow lot as well.

In reality, the argument about parking is overrated, and many students are not thinking of ways about how to get to school that don’t involve driving their cars.
