What does Oklahoma State’s new logo mean for the university and athletics?

Oklahoma State University is solidifying its brand identity with a new “brand” logo announced on July 1.

Director of Digital Marketing Megan Horton said the new solidified logo is to “strengthen the visual identity of OSU.” “OSU is a powerhouse,” Horton said.

“Our university is stronger than its ever been, and we wanted our brand identity to reflect that.”

The announcement came via an email from OSU President Burns Hargis, which said “This logo is widely recognized and associated regionally, nationally and internationally with Oklahoma State University, and provides the opportunity to educate, motivate and inspire wherever our brand appears. Used consistently, one logo unifies our identity and communications as we continue to tell the

OSU story.”

Four research strategies were utilized to determine which logo would be used to solidify the identity of the university, including brand surveys sent to fans, alumni, employees, donors, students and more garnering over 5,500 results; a digital audit to see what logos were currently being used; visual analysis of the marks themselves; and the commercialization of the logos in stores – which logos were selling better. With all this researched gathered, the “brand” logo outperformed all other logos.

But what does this mean for athletics?

OSU has gathered a reputation for having distinct and creative uniform combinations over football season, utilizing the several different logos the university had gathered over the years. Will these combinations go away?

The answer isn’t as simple as it may seem.

Uniforms are updated every few years, so we will not see a change to the athletic uniforms for at least the next season, possibly two.

“Athletics was very much a part of this conversation,” Horton said.

“It wasn’t just brand management’s project.

We helped lead it, but we had a lot of conversations with the athletic communications and marketing team.”

Although we might see some of these older logos used on uniforms for the next year or two, they will not be available for purchase anymore.

“The (sheriff’s badge logo) is currently in use on the uniforms that will be seen this fall, but we are no longer commercializing that mark,” Horton said.

“The vendors will not have it to sell product … so moving forward you won’t see it on new materials. It will live out through the life cycle of these uniforms, and then moving forward they will use

Our beloved mascot, Pistol Pete, and all variations of him will not be going anywhere. Norton made a distinction between what a “logo” is and what a “mascot” is, and Pete will not be

changing any time soon, including the “Phantom Pete.”

The individualized Pistol Pete’s we have right now are also not going anywhere, so fans of the “Wrestling Pete,” “Medical Pete” and “Baseball Pete” and more are not going anywhere for now. Although, no new indi-

vidualized Pete’s will be made.

“About four years ago we sunsetted any new custom Pete’s,” Horton said. “Going back to that first goal of strengthening our visual identity, you strengthen your identity by being consistent in having less options, not more. About three

or four years ago we stopped creating any customized Pete’s. We do not create any new Pete’s for academics or athletics. What we have is kind of sealed.”

Now that the solidified brand identity has been established, consistency is now the focus. OSU is striv-

ing to give the same impression for the university no matter what the medium is.

“This is a really big deal for the university,” Horton said.

“We are an amazing place, we have amazing people, our programs are top rated, and our visual identity needs to line up with

that. I feel like we are now moving to a place where we look the way we’ve been performing on and off the field.”

UP NEXT: This summer, the O’Colly will be taking a positionby-position breakdown look at what the OSU football team will look like for the 2019 season. This is the third installment of our series “Scouting Ahead.”

After losing two key linebackers from last year’s team in Justin Phillips and Kenneth Edison-McGruder, the Oklahoma State football team will have to replace their production and leadership on the field.

Oklahoma State has two returning linebackers in senior Calvin Bundage and redshirt junior Devin Harper. Behind them, there are questions at the position of who can emerge as a reliable option for linebacker coach Jim Knowles.

During the 2018 season, Bundage played in 11 games, missing some time due to injury. Bundage logged 62 tackles, eight tackles for loss and had four quarterback hurries. Bundage is a good pass rusher off the edge and can get to the quarterback.

to cut down on is the amount of penalties.

In 2018, Devin Harper was a solid player for the Cowboys. Harper had 44 tackles, five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks in 13 games.

Two players who played in a lot of games and have to step up are redshirt junior Amen Ogbongbemiga and redshirt senior Kevin Henry.

Last year Ogbonbemiga played in all 13 games but only had 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.

His experience will be valuable for this year’s team as he will have to play more and be a viable backup to either Bundage or Harper.

Henry has been battling injuries in his time at Oklahoma State, but he feels good about the upcoming 2019 season.

“I’m definitely ready to play with the guys,” said Henry during the spring. “It’s been a minute since I’ve been 100 (percent) but I feel great to be out there with them.”

Henry saw a lot of action in 2018 and had 10 tackles.

One player who transitioned to linebacker for 2019 was former wide receiver LC Greenwood. It will be interesting to see what

kind of impact he will have as he does not have experience at the linebacker position.

After redshirting as a freshman during the 2018 campaign, Blake Barron could also emerge to back up Bundage or Harper.

Barron had a solid high school career in Texas and was the no. 25 linebacker in the 2018 recruiting rankings by Rivals and ESPN. Barron has the ability to be quick off

the edge and get to the quarterback like he did as a senior in high school.

OSU’s depth at the linebacker position has its question marks going into the 2019 season, but has the potential to be good if it can get solid play from its relatively unproven reserves.

The Oklahoma State equestrian team released its schedule for the 201920 season Monday morning.

The Cowgirls begin their season with a tournament in the Volunteer State as they take on the hosts; UT-Martin, and Auburn on Sept. 19-20. The Lady Tigers will be the first true test of the season as they are the defending national champions.

Following the road trip to Tennessee, Larry Sanchez’s squad will welcome non-conference opponent South Dakota State to To-

tusek Arena on Sept. 27.

Other non-conference foes that will face off against the Pokes in Stillwater are South Carolina on Nov. 23 and Texas A&M on Feb. 22.

Other non-conference opponents this season include SMU and California at Davis. The Cowgirls will travel to Davis, California on Oct. 26 and to on Feb. 8.

Big 12 Conference play for the Pokes begins on Oct. 18 when the Cowgirls welcome Baylor to Stillwater. Immediately after this, the team will travel to Fresno, California to face Fresno State. Following this California road trip, the Cowgirls will go down

to Texas to battle another Big 12 rival, the TCU Horned Frogs, on Nov. 8.

The Cowgirls will finish Big 12 play with rematches against TCU (Feb. 15), Baylor (March 7) and Fresno State (March 14).

The Big 12 Championship will be held on March 27-28 in Waco, Texas The NCEA National Championship is April 15-18 and will also be in Waco.

As July approaches, the weather is getting hotter and staying inside watching Netflix all day in the air conditioning is looking more and more appealing.

In July lots of good movies and new seasons of shows are getting added to Netflix, which means that there will be plenty of stuff to watch to occupy your time while you avoid the sun. Here’s what I’m looking forward to watching the most.

Stranger Things: Season 3

Confession: I haven’t actually seen the entirety of season two yet because every time I try my sister starts watching it again and I lose track of where I am. But, I really liked season one and what I’ve seen of season 2 was just as good, so I have high hopes for season three.

Those kids are incredible actors and the storyline is captivating, and I fully plan to spend my Fourth of July binging all three seasons in one sitting.

“The Princess and the Frog” brings the classic tale to life through catchy music and beautiful animation, and you can enjoy watching it no matter how old you are.

Megamind Between “Megamind” and “Despicable Me” I don’t know which one I like more, but I am a fan of the “villain becomes the hero” trope, and I am

I love baking shows.

There’s something great about watching people way more skilled at something I like doing and critiquing them even though they are way better at said thing than I will ever be. It’s kind of like watching sports.

The Brothers Grimm If you don’t know who the Brothers Grimm are,

they wrote a lot of classic fairy tales like “Little Red Riding Hood,” but this movie is not about the real Brothers Grimm.

These two brothers Grimm are con artists who find themselves fighting against an evil witch, and it’s kind of a creepy movie but it’s also funny and enjoyable. I would definitely recommend it if you like scary movies but aren’t quite ready to watch “Annabelle Comes Home.”
