“The hope is in the future is that Oklahoma will get out of the dark ages and catch up to the rest of the U.S.,” Thomas said.

“The rest of the U.S. has at least some type of city laws. In Texas, smaller towns can be smoking, but the bigger places are smoke free by law.”

It’s part of the reason Javier said College Bar made the change.

Javier said he and Chelsea always want ways to separate College Bar from the pack, and going smoke free on the strip was an easy way to do that.

“It’s funny that going non-smoking and being health conscious is different,” Javier said. “In Stillwater, we were the first ones on the strip and that’s a big deal. A lot of existing ones still are smoking, and that’s fine, but again that’s good for us to have an experience that’s different and that’s always been our goal.”

OSU utilizes Neo-Georgian architecture M att V illa r eal Staf f R epo rt er @o c olly

Most Oklahoma State students have lived in dorms made of brick, gone to classes in brick buildings and walked on the brick path on Monroe Street.

Brick is an integral part of the OSU campus and has been for generations.

Nigel Jones, university architect, said there are a multitude of reasons for our brick-abundant campus.

Jones said brick and Neo-Georgian architecture are foundational trademarks that OSU founders intentionally used to reflect other prestigious universities.

“They looked at wellestablished universities in the United States and wanted to replicate them,” Jones said. “It was part of the effort of the college to be seen as a distinguished university in the early days of our foundation.”

Oklahoma A&M modeled itself after the College of William and Mary, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and the University of Virginia, Jones said.

Builders constructed these colleges using NeoGeorgian architecture, which generally features brick-built buildings with windows perched off the edges of their roofs.

Roger Pratt, a 17th-century architect, specialized in this architecture in Europe, Jones said.

The Donald W. Reynolds Building became the new home of OSU’s School of Architecture in 2009. The building includes naturally-lit design studios, an expanded architectural library, a daylighting lab, a digital fabrication lab, a construction lab, and classroom facilities. The building is named in honor of Donald Worthington Reynolds, an Oklahoma City native, businessman and philanthropist.

“You take anything that (Pratt) designed, like the Clarendon House in London, for example, and they can fit on our campus,” Jones said. “That goes for buildings at Virginia and William and Mary, too.

They would blend in here.”

In the 1920s, OSU further committed to Neo-Georgian architecture when Henry Bennett, president of the university at the time, proposed a master architectural plan known as the “Bennett Plan.” Bennett proposed primary layouts for the

library and the new student union, with all buildings reflecting the Neo-Georgian style, Jones said.

Financial concerns also drove the decision to use brick on campus, Jones said.

“We don’t have good stone here,” Jones said.

“The brick was available, close by, and cheaper than importing stone from places like Indiana.”

Not everyone at OSU loves the architecture, though. The traditional architecture is sometimes a hindrance of creativ-

ity, Jacob, an architecture junior, said.

“I feel like following the style so closely hinders the advancement of architecture,” Jacob said. “It’s kind of hinders forward-thinking architecture.”

Jacob said builders should use brick more as a structural element instead of as a façade, or the outer skin of a building.

“I like honest architecture,” Jacob said. “When you just put a brick curtain wall over a building, you can see it. It’s mimicking something that it’s not.”

Jacob said the new business building is an example of falsely reflecting the Neo-Georgian style, but he explained some buildings on campus do a better job of reflecting the Neo-Georgian style than others, such as the University Commons dormitories and Cordell Hall.

“They reflect the Georgian style, but they don’t try to repeat it falsely,” Jacob said. “The Commons put a good new modern spin on it.”

OSU partners with different construction

management companies to construct the buildings on campus, Jones said. These companies include Flintco, CMSWillowbrook and Manhattan Construction.

These construction companies have to maintain good relationships with OSU because the university has had trouble in the past with mischievous “brickies,” or construction workers who lay brick, Jones said.

“On one of the towers that hold up the suite level at the football stadium, a brickie formed ‘OU’ out of black brick,” Jones said, laughing. “It was high up on the tower. It’s no longer there.

“And that brickie did not work on this campus after that.”

Nick Clark, civil engineering senior, said he enjoys the look of the brick buildings on campus.

“I like the idea of all buildings on campus being brick,” he said. “It provides a sense of uniformity when most of the buildings look the same.”

Clark, a lifelong Oklahoma resident, said the NeoGeorgian architecture and brick buildings are part of the Oklahoma culture.

“It seems everywhere you go in Oklahoma, you always see brick,” Clark said. “And I hope that never changes.”

Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith spoke to media Tuesday in his first availability before the 2017 season starts against North Carolina on Nov. 11. Smith was asked about recently redshirting his son, Joe Smith, who would be entering his junior campaign. Smith also talked about Preston Weigel’s absence from the first roster of the season and promoting Chris Perry on the coaching staff this offseason.

Smith said that Weigel suffered the injury during the preseason, and Andrew Marsden will start in his absence.

“He just needs to heal up before we put him back on the mat,” Smith said. “But sometime during the year we’re gonna see him. It kind of puts us in a little bit of a position where we’re thin up top.” ***

After longtime assistant coach Eric Guerrero accepted a head coaching position with the Oklahoma Regional Training Center, there was a void in OSU’s coaching staff.

Smith promoted his nephew, Chris Perry, who had served as a volunteer assistant coach for two seasons, to fill the hole. Perry also won two national titles as a wrestler at OSU in 2013 and ’14.

“He’s deserved his chance and his opportunity,” Smith said. “He passed up a lot of jobs that were paying about five times what I was paying him. I think when

you see kids make those sacrifices, it bonds you together like there’s gonna be a day you’re gonna take care of him.

Making those sacrifices to stay here means a lot to you. When the opportunity came, there was no question that, although he’s my nephew, he earned his spot, and he has a good relationship with the studentathletes and he connects with them really well. I think in coaching, we’re all looking for that in our assistant coaches.”

The event took place on Main Street in downtown Stillwater. Not only were kids dressed up in costumes, but adults as well. Businesses and organizations set up booths and games for kids to participate. Several businesses and organizations gave candy to passing children.

“Geostorm” calls for the unification of countries across the globe to stand together against harmful climate change.

The movie takes a look into the future of what would happen if global warming was expedited.

After several global natural disasters threaten humanity, scientists across the world come together to manufacture a satellite system that will stabilize the planet’s environment.

The system saves Earth until multiple satellite

malfunctions create a series of storms that act as a catalyst for the ultimate global storm, a geostorm.

The movie provides a parallel plot line that draws two brothers together from different sides of the universe. Max Lawson (Jim Sturgess) worked as a liaison between the United States government and outer space while Jake Lawson (Gerald Butler) worked for satellite intelligence in space. After years of estrangement, the pair must work together to figure out a way to regain control of the rogue satellites.

tries to prevent their progress and evidence suggests the satellite malfunctions are an inside job, the brothers discover they can trust no one except one another.

They must figure out how to save the world and who to bring along the journey without giving away intelligence to an unknown enemy. Members of the satellite project “Dutch Boy” began disappearing and Jake must figure out the assailant’s motives before he becomes the next target.

Though “Geostorm” is based largely off the perspectives of two Ameri-

cans, it incorporated many other perspectives from different cultures around the world.

It did not only worship United States officials, but also gave credit to scientists from many different countries.

The world leaders’ corroboration opened the movie to a more global view, rather than focusing entirely on the United States perspective. The perspective of people’s struggles across the world made the movie more heartwarming and wellbalanced.

Despite the movie’s emotional pull and easy-

to-follow plotline, it was remained predictable. The movie gathered ideas from many other apocalyptic movies. Humans making a scientific discovery that threatens humanity is no stranger to this over-saturated genre of film. Science can be attributed to many apocalyptic movies such as “World War Z,” “I am Legend” and “2012.”

The cast is convincing in their roles, but the plotline does not offer enough to the audience. When the culprit of the satellite attacks is finally found, it is not too surprising.

The entire movie builds toward the “geostorm” but

most of the movie features little of the storms that threaten humanity. The movie would be more convincing with more storms integrated throughout the plotline.

If fans want a longer version of the trailers, then the movie is worth watching, otherwise the movie trailer highlights most of the action in the movie with little more revealed in the actual movie.
