For Oklahoma State alumnus Fred Gutierrez, homecoming brings back memories of new beginnings and old friendships.

Gutierrez graduated from OSU in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

After graduation, Gutierrez traveled all over the world working on missiles, submarines, planes and more. Now, he lives in Maui, Hawaii, and helps design schools.

Gutierrez has been traveling from Maui to Stillwater for homecoming since 2016.

“It’s a great way for our family to bond and be together,” Gutierrez said.

“We like to go around, walk around the campus and try new food. We love the atmosphere on campus, everyone is so friendly and happy.”

Gutierrez was born in Guam in 1937. Gutierrez said growing up in Guam during the 1940s was chal-

lenging.

“At the same time the Japanese were bombing Pearl Harbor in 1941, they were bombing Guam,” Gutierrez said. “I was really young and playing outside when I heard planes flying over, and my mother was running toward me. Three days later, the Japanese took over Guam.”

Gutierrez had never planned on going to college until one of his high school teachers noticed his potential.

“Junior year, my teacher told me I needed to go to college,” Gutierrez said. “I said, ‘There’s no way I can afford it.’ She said, ‘There is always a way.’ She convinced me.”

After applying to OSU in 1956, Gutierrez was accepted but couldn’t afford to go at the time.

“I worked for a year to make enough money to travel there,” Gutierrez said. “Then I hopped on a plane and came to Stillwater. I didn’t even tell OSU I was coming. It wasn’t until I was on my way there that I thought, ‘What if they

don’t take me now?’ But they did, thankfully.”

Although moving from Guam to Stillwater was a big adjustment, Gutierrez said it was a positive change.

“I never got homesick once I left,” Gutierrez said.

“I actually think it was really good for me, because back then, I was so shy. I wouldn’t even answer the phone. Then I started to meet a lot of good friends, and it was great.”

Gutierrez said he formed close friendships that lasted throughout college with his three roommates.

“We all lived in Thatcher Hall, and at the time, you weren’t allowed to have refrigerators in the building,” Gutierrez said. “But of course, we had a refrigerator, and when we heard our room was going to be inspected, we would move it around from room to room.

It was a good time.”

During his senior year, Gutierrez and his three best friends moved into a house in Stillwater.

“One of the guys I was especially close to, after

we graduated, we ended up finding each other,” Gutierrez said. “But eventually, we lost track. The last time I heard from him, he was in Florida. I haven’t been able to find him since.”

Gutierrez said he hopes to meet with all his friends again someday.

“The last time I saw them was a year after graduation,” Gutierrez said.

“I would really like to find them and catch up sometime.”

Gutierrez said his fondest memories of OSU were the basketball and football games.

“I was one of the Paddle People,” Gutierrez said.

“The best part was going to the games with friends and the energy and excitement in the air.”

Gutierrez said he doesn’t want to miss any future homecoming games, no matter his age or how far he has to travel.

“This campus and the memories I had here are important to me, and I want my family to experience it,” Gutierrez said. “It’s a special place.”

Chuba Hubbard is consistently one of the last Oklahoma State football players to walk into Boone Pickens Stadium for interviews after Tuesday practices.

When most of his teammates leave the Sherman E. Smith Training Center and cross Hall of Fame Avenue, Hubbard works a little longer. Although Hubbard is known for his speed and agility as a running back, he spends his extra practice time catching footballs from the JUGS throwing machine to improve his hand reflexes.

week, Hubbard, a redshirt sophomore from Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada, maintains his spot atop the FBS with 1,094 rushing yards. His name has popped up in Heisman Trophy conversations, and in a Twitter video Wednesday morning, Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky congratulated Hubbard for his accomplishments.

Despite the attention surrounding him, which is evident when reporters quickly flock to him each time he finishes practice and steps through the Boone Pickens Stadium gate, Hubbard isn’t yet satisfied with his work.

“I think I got a long ways to go,” Hubbard said.

“There’s some things I’m doing good, but I still have to improve a lot of stuff. I’m not perfect. My O-line and everyone around (me) has been doing a great job helping me out, but I still got a lot to work on and a lot to learn.”

Hubbard said the bye week gave the Cowboys time to review the first half of the season and identify adjustments they should make as they prepare to face No. 18 Baylor in the Homecoming game at 3 p.m. Saturday.

OSU is striving to bounce back from a 45-35 upset loss to Texas Tech that knocked the Cowboys out of the top-25 rankings.

“When you have five (team) turnovers, it’s gonna put you in a bad position in a game, so that’s something we’ve just got to fix as a team,” Hubbard said.

“Learn from our mistakes.”

On Saturday of OSU’s bye weekend, Hubbard watched some of the game between the Red Raiders and Bears, though he also focused on homework and rest. Occasionally, he takes note of other running backs’ big plays, looking for elements he can incorporate into his game, but he isn’t caught up in the competition. Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins, the No. 2 player on the FBS rushing list, trails Hubbard by 268 yards.

“I just try to do my best on my own side, and everything else will kind of take care of itself,” Hubbard said.

As Hubbard continually looks to boost his game, he absorbs knowledge from running backs coach John Wozniak, regularly talks to former Cowboy rusher Justice Hill and works on catching drills with associate head coach/receivers coach Kasey Dunn.

Hubbard said he can accept critiques from anyone.

“If there was a 5-year-old kid and he said my pass blocking was bad, then obviously my pass blocking’s bad,” Hubbard said, grinning. “So I’m someone

that can’t be someone (who is) like, ‘Oh, I’m too good to take something from someone.’ That’s something I hold myself to; I’ll try to learn anything from anyone.”

Although the Cowboys (4-2 overall, 1-2 Big 12) are entering their Homecoming matchup against an undefeated opponent, Hubbard is treating it as if it’s any other game. No matter the situation or rival, Hubbard reminds himself of his motivation to keep working.

“I have a why,” Hubbard said. “Why I play football, why I’m here and stuff like that. It’s my family, so every single game, I’m just kind of like, ‘I want more.’”

When Mike Gundy got home from the office Sunday night, he tuned his television into Sunday Night Football.

The Steelers were facing the Chargers, and it was Pittsburgh’s first game since its starting quarterback Mason Rudolph, a three-year starter for Gundy at Oklahoma State from 2014-17, was knocked out cold on the field a week prior after taking a terrifying hit from veteran safety Earl Thomas.

As he went through the NFL’s concussion protocol, Rudolph watched Pittsburgh’s 24-17 victory from the sidelines while Gundy watched from his

Stillwater home.

Rudolph’s scary injury didn’t shake up only the OSU world, but it also sent shockwaves throughout the entire football community, as television cameras capturing his thenmotionless body on the field triggered emotions from viewers nationwide.

In a report that surfaced early in the week from Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh PostGazette, a source confirmed Rudolph had been cleared by an independent neurologist and had cleared concussion protocol before Sunday’s game against the Chargers, which Rudolph reportedly wanted to suit up for, but the coaches sidelined him to be cautious.

on their schedule this weekend, giving Rudolph another week to recover and an opportunity to return to Stillwater for OSU’s America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration and the Cowboys’ matchup against No. 18 Baylor on Saturday.

“He texted me last night and said that he would be here, so he’ll be back,” Gundy said. “This is a big week for Oklahoma State, obviously the largest homecoming in the country. We’re guesstimating 60-70 thousand people back in town.

“The most difficult part for me is tickets. Everybody wants tickets. Former players, ex-players, pro players. Difficult time, but it’s a good problem to have that we have that many

people coming back. We’ll have a full house.”

Rudolph was announced as one of three judges for a slam dunk contest scheduled for Friday’s Homecoming and Hoops event at Gallagher-Iba Arena, and he will be one of quite a few former OSU football players who are expected to return to Stillwater this week.

OSU doesn’t have a longstanding history of inviting former players back and embracing them, and Gundy hinted that it was something everyone felt needed to be addressed and made a priority for a long time.

“We hadn’t really built much tradition here (regarding that),” Gundy said. “When I took over and started to pay attention to it, former players and players com-

ing back and alumni weekend all of those things that are crucial in developing a tradition and history, we hadn’t really done at Oklahoma State. It was nobody’s job.

“It’s one of those things where everybody says it needs to be done, but if you don’t put somebody in charge of it, nobody ever takes care of it.

We’ve had it as secondary to certain people, but now we’ve got it to where we’re handling it in-house for the most part. I think it’s done very well, and the players have appreciated being a part of the program that they put a lot of time and effort into during their years here in school.”

forward to catching up with Rudolph, former OSU receiver James Washington and other former Cowboys to see how they are doing. Sophomore running back Chuba Hubbard said he is most looking forward to hearing about what the NFL is like, though he said he wished the Ravens had a bye week to allow former Cowboy running back Justice Hill to visit.

“I’m guessing anybody who has an open week in the NFL will be back,” Gundy said. “We had an alumni week for the last home game, and I think we had 140 or 150 players then, so we’ve started a nice tradition where players are coming back, and that’s a good thing for Oklahoma State football.”

“We’re only as good as each other, we’re only as good as our players,” Carmichael said. “It’s special, and I told the girls after

the game I don’t know if there’s a group you would rather celebrate things with because this group has been unbelievable for us.”

The Cowgirls, unbeknownst to Carmichael, already had celebration plans in mind. OSU defender Charmé Morgan and company caught Carmichael cold after the victory with a waterfall of Gatorade. Carmichael said that moment was special.

“The funny part to me is Jaci (Jones) was next to me making sure I didn’t get away, and I think she got it worse than I did,” Carmichael said. “It was a nice moment, it was fun, but I’m still sticky. It’s disgusting.”

The player-coach relationships for the Cowgirls extend further than the celebrations. Sophomore Ally

Jackson said Carmichael’s role on the team feels like more than just a coach.

“I tell a lot of other people he’s like another dad,” Jackson said. “(He’s) a dad figure, he’s always there for us, and if we need anything, he can help us out.”

Grace Yochum, who scored one of the goals in Carmichael’s 200th win, said the positive relationships with the coach and staff are factors that make OSU successful.

“They say, ‘Don’t commit for the coach,’ but the coach is a big thing,” Yochum said. “Having coaches and people that care about you and are

just fun to be with, it’s everything, and it makes the experience here so much more fun.”

Carmichael said there have been many highs and lows throughout his time at OSU, but several of the 200 wins stand out.

Carmichael and the Cowgirls will look to claim victory No. 201 on Thursday in Morgantown, West Virginia.

“Going to two Elite Eights is definitely special, and then winning the Big 12 in Austin in 2017,” Carmichael said. “Nobody gave us a chance (in 2017), and it’s a little bit like this year.”
