On Jan. 27, 2001, 10 members of the Oklahoma State family died in a plane crash in Colorado. Among them was William Hancock.

Hancock worked as a media relations coordinator at OSU. He joined the staff in 1996.

After the crash, Kamon Simpson wrote in the Colorado Springs Gazette-Telegraph, “We are a generation that communicates in sarcasm and irony, but Will’s heart was too earnest -- too pure -- to shed some elemental courteousness the rest of us had abandoned. He was what people refer to when they use the term ‘good person.’ When you met him, you just knew he had a Jimmy Stewart uprightness about him. He was who we felt we all could be, but only when we try, really hard.”

Eighteen years later, Karen Hancock carried on her late husband’s legacy and participated in the Remember the Ten Run in Stillwater.

The Remember the Ten Run was held for the first time in 2006 as a way to honor the 10 victims who died on the plane crash. Since then, the Run has grown from

a memorial event to an official event in the Oklahoma race calendar.

More than 1,400 participants registered for the race in 2019, and all the proceeds were donated to the University Counseling Services. Friends and family members of the deceased also participated as a way to remember.

The O’Colly had a chance to speak with Karen Hancock after she finished the race Saturday.

Q: As one of the founding members of the run, how have you seen it evolve from the first year to now?

Q: What does this run mean to you, especially because your husband was one of the passengers on that plane?

A: I always view this run as a celebration of his life. It’s really great to get family members coming in, and we are all gather and just celebrate who Will was and what he was all about and what a great guy he was. It’s a fun event, it’s a great day. We are really blessed today with some beautiful weather.

It’s a great day to be out here remembering him and the other nine.

Q: You mentioned you have 84 friends and family members, and they are all wearing shirts representing Team Hancock during the run.

them come here and celebrate your husband’s life?

A: It tells me that they are supporting me, yes, but really, we are remembering Will. We all love Will and he meant a lot to us. It’s just a great way to say we are still remembering him and we still miss him. It means a lot for all these people to come in. I’ve got people who came from Texas, St. Louis and up from Florida. It just means a lot for them to come in for a couple days and be a part of this.

Q: Talking about your husband’s legacy, 18 years later and now his name is being used for a scholarship for students who are doing what he was at that time. How do you see his legacy being carried over?

A: Yeah, we have a scholarship for media relations graduate students. It means a lot that his name is carried forward. There is a little legacy there for the sports information department with his name on it. I love it, and I hope it goes on forever.

A: That just comes to show you that all these guys were real. They were a really important part of their lives and they are missed. People show up and go out of their way to show up for the event every year.

A: I always love the idea of this run because the proceeds of this run go to the University Counseling Center. They were a very important part of the grieving process for me after the crash. I was certainly a person that never thought I was going to need counseling in my life. After suffering from such a horrific tragedy, I did and I needed help and started understand it’s OK to ask for help. So I’m all for supporting that service, and the fact this run benefits the service is wonderful. It’s also wonderful because it brings everyone together every year and gives us a reason to come and be gathered, and it is a feel good moment.

Members of every Oklahoma State sport gathered in Gallagher-Iba Arena Monday evening as OSU student-athletes, coaches, administrators and supporters dazzled on the orange carpet at the inaugural Cowboy Choice Awards.

The event, which was put on by OSU’s StudentAthlete Advisory Committee with support from OSU Athletics, included an award show hosted by ESPN’s Maria Taylor.

The NCAA champion OSU men’s golf golf team, led by Viktor Hovland and Mat-

thew Wolff, combined to take home five Cowboy Choice Awards, while former Cowgirl softball star Vanessa Shippy took home two awards, as she won Female Athlete of the Year and Female Performance of the Year.

Longtime Oklahoma State supporter T. Boone Pickens was winner of the Difference-Maker Award, which was subsequently named in his honor because of his financial contributions to OSU athletics.

The timeframe for eligibility for the awards is sports that ended in the 2018 calendar year, which means awards are presented based on performances during the

Understanding body image and toxic masculinity from the male perspective.

by Chase Congleton In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of body positivity for women all across the world. Many companies in the past decade, such as Dove, have put their focus on increased inclusivity for women.

However, among all the progress and awareness for women, what is the status of body image for men?

According to a study posted

by HealthLine, over 90 percent of boys in middle school and high school go to the gym with the sole purpose to gain muscle.

The ideal male physique continues to move further outside the realm of obtainability as the typical male body type young boys are exposed to increasingly come from blockbuster superhero movies. From a young age, men are subliminally are told that big muscles equate to braver y, courage and boldness. They are also told to stifle their emotions and to “act like men.”

boys refusing to showcase any emotion that doesn’t display dominance, has sparked a conversation in recent years. Notably, earlier this year, Gillette released an ad detailing what men’s role should be in the #MeToo era and how men can do their part without overstepping boundaries.

Celebrities such as Terry Crews help take part in the conversation of eradicating toxic masculinity from our modern culture, by advocating for male victims of sexual assault. In order for our culture to allow men to be more confident within themselves, society needs to allow men to be vulnerable.

I decided to interview a male staff member of MODMuze, Nathan Cheatham, who has been a part of our staff since August 2018 and has worked extensively with social media and photography.

In the age of social media, have you ever struggled with body image or comparing yourself to others?

“Yes, I have struggled with comparing myself to others. I think one of the ways that people attract attention to themselves in the social media age is by posing shirtless on Instagram or Twitter.

More people are less genuine to their audience because they are attracting them with their body rather than their mind. Society holds our bodies to a high standard. It’s a harmful view to look at it, as many men can’t meet that standard.”

Have you ever struggled with expressing your emotions?

“Personally, not really. I’m a really emotional person and express how I feel. But I believe that wearing my hear t on my sleeve has caused me to have negative feelings toward other men who don’t express their emotions. My relationship with those who struggle with expressing their emotions has been hindered because I can’t relate to others who don’t comfortably express themselves.

The expectation of society is unrealistic and harmful to the men growing up with expectations.”

What can be done in our society in terms of dealing with toxic masculinity and male body image?

“Having a better representation of body types and archetypes instead of what’s seen in the media would be helpful. We also have to be more open in our OCOLLY.COM

conversations with other people because emotions are important and powerful. Without emotions, you fail to relate to others and can remain ignorant of the world.”

What advice do you have for anyone who is reading right now?

“Don’t be afraid to be yourself. As stereotypical as that is, we fear society’s mold for us. You are your own identity and are free to live and be yourself. Be true to who you are. Oh, and cry a little.

Game of Thrones

Spoiler Alert: Game of Thrones second episode is worst in series thus far J o seph Faz io,

Worst episode ever.

I was truly bored out of my mind watching the second episode of “Game of Thrones’” last season.

In two episodes that spanned 54 and 58 minutes, respectively, there were no on-screen deaths.

Not to sound like a psychopath, but many fans do not watch Game of Thrones for the politics or interfamilial love. Many, such as myself, watch it for the action.

What the episode did do was that it got me amped for this Sunday when it will finally be the Battle of Winterfell.

This episode had numerous flaws that generally made the episode boring. If the episode was leaked early, there would be no spoilers for fans.

The episode did not reveal anything new or shocking.

Well, maybe one shocking series of events involving Arya.

Since the end of the last episode, we all knew the Battle of Winterfell was coming. When Tormund, the Night’s Watch and the Brotherhood without Banners met in the Umber’s castle, I was ready for a fight.

All last week if thought about how the battle would go, who would live and who would die.

Then as I again sat in my friend’s apartment on WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2019

Sunday, I watched strategic planning and people talking about how they’re going to die.

Once again, I’ll make it easier by listing who I believe will die. I will most likely be wrong, but with some, I know they will die.

Beric Dondarrion: Dead and will say something cliche about the Lord of Light when he dies.

Theon Greyjoy: Dead, he is in the worst place, stay out of the crypts.

Brienne of Tarth: Alive, her leading the flank is going to be key.

Ser Davos Seaworth: Dead, he survived the Battle of Blackwater and Battle of the Bastards, but the Onion Knight will not survive.

Grey Worm: Dead, will somehow sacrifice himself to save Missandei.

Gendry: Alive, him and Arya will demolish loads of White Walkers.

Arya: Alive, after what we all saw last week, Arya is going to kill thousands.

The Hound: Dead, wouldn’t be surprised if Arya kills him herself.

Jon Snow: Alive, the King in the North will lead them to victory Daenerys Targaryen: Alive (for now), Daenerys and Drogon are going to defeat the Night King and the undead Viserion.

Night King: Dead, technically he’s already dead, but he will be defeated.

Jamie Lannister: Dead,

fights for the living, gets killed by the dead.

There are more characters such as Podrick, Sansa and Bran who will either live or die. But those are a few of the characters I believe are locks for their fate.

The confrontation between Jamie and Daenerys was lacking any true emotion. It was easy to guess that she would let Jamie live. As I previously said, there were no plot twists or spoilers that you could talk about.

The last part that I was especially displeased with were the actions between Daenerys and Jon. It seemed as if the two of them only talks for about five minutes.

When Jon finally reveals that he is Daenerys’ nephew, she only talks about the Iron Throne.

Excuse me, you are in love with your nephew.

Could you talk about something other than becoming queen for once?

The next episode better be action packed and provide more detail to what has been brewing for seasons. If not, this season will be cemented as the worst.
