Getting to know the NPHC

When most people think of Greek life they think of big houses, pomping, or parties, but there is a whole other side to Greek life at OSU that isn’t housed in the Greek neighborhood.

It contributes to the community, leadership, service, and family that is OSU, and that side is the National Panhellenic Council (NPHC).

NPHC is composed of nine historically black sororities and fraternities, often called the “Divine Nine.” The Divine Nine consists of the five fraternities (Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Iota Phi Theta) and four sororities (Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta and Sigma Gamma Rho).

NPHC was Formed in 1930 at Howard University and focuses on scholarship, giving back to the community, family, and the betterment of African Americans and others.

On campus, NPHC strives to stay involved and engaged.

Political science

junior Dezavia Taylor, member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, has seen how NPHC works to be involved on campus.

“The NPHC has done many events like the NPHC welcome week, which held a new event each day like a free cereal bar for students and a bowling night, community service, karaoke nights, and study nights,” Taylor said.

“These events are open to anybody, with a purpose of bringing the community together, and there are many more events to come.”

NPHC operates differently from other Greek organizations on campus. For example, NPHC has a tradition of strolling. Strolling is a cultural expression of strength and unity performed by sororities and fraternities through dancing.

Strolling is an outward expression of their inward values of, scholarship, retention, and family within the black community.

Construction technology senior Kyron Sanders, member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, talked about how NPHC involvement works to retain students.

of my chapter is one hundred percent, which means that a lot of us don’t drop out or switch,” Sanders stated. “When you join, you’re joining something bigger than yourself. Strolling, or having a letter is cool, but the purpose of being in the NPHC is so much deeper than that.”

NPHC is also deeply family orientated.

There are nine organizations that make up the divine nine, but despite their differences they all care for each other, and want to see the progression of all organizations. For NPHC, it’s a lifetime commitment.

“The culture is completely different,” Sanders said. “we’re a very close family despite our letters, it makes us different, but our letters bring us closer. It creates a source of unity anywhere.”

With so many organizations on campus, it’s hard to know about all of them. Members of NPHC believe that collaborating with other campus organizations, more publicity, pairing with other Greek councils for events, and advertising to a broader audience will help spread the

word about the NPHC and their events.

Theater senior Kevin Hayes, member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, discussed working to get more involved with other aspects of campus.

“On our part, we can host more events that engage more people on campus or try to appeal to different types of people more.”

Hayes said. “Gaining more support from different organizations who know about

us will allow us to reach different audiences as well as spread the word about their upcoming events to our general audiences.

That would be a great way to spread the word while meeting and engaging with new and diverse groups of people.

Whether studying, strolling, community service, or hosting campus events, NPHC is active on campus and the continuous hard work and dedica-

tion of each member, not only shows their pride in being a part of NPHC, but their pride of being a part of the cowboy family. Taylor is proud of NPHC and wants people to know they’re welcome.

“We’re here.” Taylor states. “We are very friendly, fun, close, and we have a lot to offer, if you see one of us say hi and ask questions, we are more than happy to inform anyone about the NPHC!”

Students gathered in circles in the neon-lit room, either sprawled out on bean bag chairs or couches, with the two therapy dogs in the middle.

RuffRuff Reboot, a pet therapy event from Pete’s Pet Posse, was held Monday in the Reboot Center at the OSU Student Union.

OSU’s Pet Therapy Program Pete’s Pet Posse has been active on campus helping to improve students physical and emo-

tional health since 2013.

The therapy dogs in action Monday were Hera and Lucy. For one hour, these dogs were available for those who needed to stop by.

Senior food science major Rachel Olivieri said she is a regular at RuffRuff Reboot events and others like it stopping by whenever she can because it helps her get away from the stress of her classes.

“I just love petting the cute dogs and loving on them,” Olivieri said. “I’ve been coming all four years I’ve been here and I love seeing the dogs.

It’s helped me just keep

going.”

Pet therapy has been shown to have a list of benefits. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, pets can lower cholesterol, blood pressure, triglyceride levels and feelings of loneliness. PetMD has found that pets not only improve the health of owners, but strengthens their relationships as well.

Through joint efforts between the President’s Office, OSU College of Veterinary Medicine, OSU Veterinary Medical Hospital, University Counselling, Human Resources and the Employee

Assistance Program, students who do not have access to pets at home can have these same benefits in their workplace.

A group of OSU students created a group volunteering program called the Ruff Riders in 2016. According to Pete’s Pete Posse members, the Ruff Riders are an active member of the family.

Samuel Bailey, a sophomore electrical engineering major and a member of the Ruff Riders, worked at the event Monday and said he enjoys how the program has helped him make new friends, helps students and lets him pet

dogs.

“I recently became a Ruff Rider two months ago,” Bailey said. “I help hand out cards, help get water for the dogs and tell people about the program.

It’s a good time too getting to meet new people and then seeing the same faces every week and getting to know them. This is all a really good stress reliever; classes are very stressful.”

Freshman Amber Main helped volunteer at the event Monday. Main said she found out about Pete’s Pet Posse from their social media page soon after her arrival on campus and im-

mediately got involved by volunteering once a week.

“It’s very nice for the students,” Main said. “For some people leaving their pet is harder than leaving their parents, so it’s very nice that they can have dogs to play with.”

Pete’s Pet Posse is active on Facebook and Twitter under the username @Pets4Pete. The accounts are updated frequently with pictures of the therapy dogs and event details.

More events later in the week and in the future will be posted on Pete’s Pet Posse social media pages.

The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts hosts Charles Norris’ senior flute recital as part of the center’s connection to the Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music.

This is one of the first student recitals to take place in the McKnight Center after it opened on September 28.

Norris’ performance included pieces from Romanian composer George Enescu, John Manuel Pacheco, German Baroque composer Georg Telemann, Otar Taktakishvili, Jacob Thiede

and a self-written piece by Norris. Norris was assisted by Pi-Ju Chiang on piano, Avery Jordan on violin and Dawson Leffingwell on percussion.

The recital is part of the fulfillment for Norris’ degree from the Greenwood School of Music and requires him to perform music composed in different eras “The whole point of the recital, of the music I chose, was to have the beginning of music all the way to the modern era,” Norris said. “So, we have the Georg Philipp Telemann “Fantasia for Flute,” just a solo flute piece with no accompaniment and it’s from the Baroque era, it’s one of the earliest pieces for flute. And

we end the concert with the electronic piece, which was written in 2012.”

The recital took place in the Recital Hall of the McKnight Center, a room fine-tuned to host smaller musical performances. Norris stood alongside a black grand piano on stage for much of the recital.

The piano was eventually replaced by a massive percussion set-up including a giant xylophone, bass drum and windchimes. This was used for Norris’ self-composition, “even the silence breaks with time.” Norris said he composed this piece freshman year for a percussionist but decided to use it in his recital.

“The piece, it’s very idiom-

atic,” Norris said. “There’s a lot of free time, there’s no real pulse. There’s a lot of really harsh sections where it’s just noises out of nowhere and it’s supposed to emulate the fact that everything wears down, nothing is forever; even silence eventually wears down.”

The recital finished with Norris alone with just his flute and a computer set-up allowing him to play electronic tracks alongside his solo. The composer for this track, Jacob Thiede, was in attendance for the recital. Thiede said he had been working with Norris on performing the piece for over three months.

for the recital. She said she remembers Charles learning the flute at an early age from his sister.

“It was about seven or eight, because she played it and she was teaching him.” said Wanita Norris.

During his time at Oklahoma State, Norris has been taught by Erin Murphy, a flautist and assistant professor for the Greenwood School of Music. She said she is proud of Norris’ recital and how it was all executed. Murphy assisted Norris in selecting what pieces to perform.

“I like to give my students some ideas of repertoire pieces,” said Murphy. “I think the Taktakishvili is one

that we kind of like mutually agreed on, same with Telemann’s “Fantasy.” Then with the other ones: his composition, which I thought it was a great showcase of some of the pieces that he has composed because he’s also into composing, and then the last piece, he totally found on his own and he brought it to me, and I was like ‘this sounds fantastic, let’s do it!’”

Norris said he is hoping to get into graduate school either at Julliard University of Southern California or Michigan State University after he graduates from Oklahoma State He plans to study composing.

Calvin Bundage hasn’t been entirely ruled out.

His return though, seems more unlikely with every passing week.

The senior linebacker from Edmond has missed the entire 2019 season so far with a back injury that cropped up in June. He suffered a setback in late August that prolonged his recovery.

At first, he practiced in a limited, non-contact capacity, but has been shut down since the setback.

“He’s been cleared, but he just kept saying, ‘I don’t feel good,’” coach Mike Gundy said. “So that’s when I brought him

in and said, ‘You need to just go and do physical therapy and take care of your body and rehabilitate.’”

He’s made improvements over the past couple months, with Gundy saying Bundage has felt considerably better recently.

But hasn’t felt completely right yet.

“When you have an injury like his, which is a back injury, no one can tell how that’s gonna recover,” Gundy said. “You could take him to the best doctors there are and they’ll say, ‘A month from now, we don’t know how you’re gonna handle being a college football player.’”

to close out the season, though Gundy doesn’t see much benefit.

Given he appears in less than four games, Bundage would be allowed to redshirt and return for the Cowboys next year.

Gundy said it would be up to Bundage and his family to decide the direction he wants to go.

“If he came back and practiced and said he felt great and wanted to play a couple games, I’m all for it,” Gundy said. “But I’ll be real honest with you, is the potential setback worth it? That’s where you’re at.

“I’m hoping that he’ll feel a lot better and be able to rally back and play next year. That’s my opinion on it.”
