Coaching is easy for John Smith.

The rest of his job?

Not so much.

Each year Smith, Oklahoma State’s wrestling coach, has to find a way to piece his team together with limited scholarships. The NCAA allows 9.9 scholarships per team in college wrestling. In comparison, Division 1 football programs have 85 full-ride scholarships.

“It’s a real challenge,” Smith said. “And it’s the worst part of my job. I hate it. Coaching’s easy.

I hate that I have to cut someone, that I have to take some money away from someone, which I don’t do very often unless they’ve broken team rules. I hate to say no to walk-ons that say, ‘Hey, can you help me next year?’ They’ve been in the room every day busting their tails and they’ve added a value to our program and I gotta say no.”

Smith said having 9.9 scholarships forces OSU to put an emphasis on recruiting in-state athletes while also having multiple walk-ons. Smith said he and his staff stack wrestling scholarship money with academic money if the wrestler has good grades. He said he spends about 300 hours figuring out how he is going to distribute money for scholarships FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2019

each year.

Smith said Derek White, who is No. 2 at heavyweight, was a walk-on when he came to OSU. White wrestled his first two seasons at Nebraska before transferring.

Smith also used Pat Smith, his brother, as an example. Pat Smith was the first wrestler to win four NCAA titles. Smith said he didn’t think Pat Smith was ever on full scholarship.

“It’s a constant challenge, making it all work,” Smith said.

Zack Esposito is in his 10th season as an assistant for the Cowboys and won a national title in 2005 at 149.

Esposito is from Three Bridges, New Jersey, so he faced the challenge of paying for out-ofstate tuition and fees, which have continually climbed during the past 10 years. The number of scholarships to give out, 9.9, has stayed the same despite higher tuition.

“Even just a difference in 10 years at OSU, our out-of-state tuition has basically increased close to $1,000 every year,” Esposito said. “So, 10 years ago it was about $10,000 cheaper to come to OSU if you’re out of state.”

In 2009-10, out-ofstate tuition and fees at OSU was $16,555.50 for 30 hours of classes, according to okhighered. org. Now, that number has risen to $27,130,

according to OSU’s website.

Esposito said he never knew what percentage of scholarship he was on, but he knew how many classes he could take and how much money he would have to live on each month.

Smith said the cost of out-of-state tuition makes it crucial he and his coaching staff know what they are getting when they offer an outof-state wrestler.

“You can’t make mistakes,” Smith said.

“You make mistakes, it’s gonna show. We’ve made mistakes. You’re not gonna coach 28 years and get the right ones all the time. We’ve been pretty good on our choices. I will say, our in-state athletes have really been a real treat for us. Our local athletes that we’ve signed in the last three or four years have been really important to us.”

For Oklahoma native Kaden Gfeller, it didn’t matter who offered him, and how much it was.

“There’s probably other places that offered me more, full rides and what not, but really at the end of the day it came down to wrestling for coach Smith,” Gfeller said.

“I didn’t even take any other official visits. I’ve always wanted to wrestle under coach Smith. I knew there was a lot of other good coaches, but in my opinion, the one that was gonna win me a national title was coach Smith. It really wasn’t

a hard decision to make.”

The Cowboys have 19 wrestlers from Oklahoma on their roster, including six from Stillwater.

Doug Chesbro is in his 31st year as coach of the Stillwater High School wrestling team where he has coached 29 individual state champions.

Chesbro said the limited scholarships available in wrestling makes it tough on athletes, and sometimes pushes them away from the sport.

C ove r S t o ry “If you have an offer to go to a football program, who wouldn’t take that full scholarship rather than just getting their books paid for?” Chesbro said.

“You go play one of those other sports and you get it all taken care of. The money itself makes a decision for some of these kids.”

Smith said being fair is tough when dealing with 9.9 scholarships.

“It’s never fair,” Smith said. “Ultimately, you just hate that, at times, you don’t want your integrity in question with your studentathletes. Because really, there’s guys that’ve been national champions for Oklahoma

State that’ve been on 40 percent scholarships and guys that might not have made the team on 50 or 60 percent because they came out of state.

“It’s not a fair system, and because of the system the way it is, I work really hard to make sure my athletes know I’m trying to make it as fair as I can.

It’s really tough.”

For Tyler Caldwell, who is in his second season as the Cowboys’ recruiting coordinator, scholarships played a big role in his college decision.

Out of high school, Caldwell wanted to wrestle for OSU, but it had no scholarships

available at his weight.

He went to OU, but after two years decided to transfer to OSU, where he was an All-American twice at 165.

“We have a lot of kids that wanna come to Oklahoma State, but we may not need their weight,” Caldwell said.

“That’s kind of the situation I was in when I was coming out of high school. They had guys at my weight. I ended up going to OU and after two years there I took an Olympic redshirt and things opened up here where I knew Oklahoma State had a need at my weight and I was looking to make a change. It worked out. It’s all part of my

journey.”

Smith said he and his staff have missed out on many guys because of a lack of scholarship money but said everyone has to deal with it.

“For us, when you’re going out and recruiting somebody in the East Coast and they have eight programs that’re offering them a full ride, and we’re offering them about 60 percent, you’re not going to win those guys,” Smith said.

Although Smith said dealing with scholarships is his least favorite part of his job, he said it isn’t all negative and teaches his wrestlers discipline.

“We do without,” Smith said. “A lot of our guys do without a lot of times. Nobody’s on full scholarship, they’re not getting a big fat check every month.

That’s not happening.

They gotta manage their money, they gotta be smart with their money.

“We got a chance to help guys really grow and develop some skills and some habits that they will have to live with when they graduate.”

When the No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team heads to Tulsa on Saturday, it will be the heavy favorite as it looks for a seventh straight Big 12 title.

Here are three things to look for: Dakota Geer’s return to the mat The last time Dakota Geer wrestled for OSU was at 197 in the Cowboys’ 27-6 victory against No. 20 Lehigh on Feb. 8. He has taken the last month to prepare for this weekend in Tulsa, where he is the No. 3 seed at 184.

With over a month to prepare, Geer will easily be the freshest of any wrestler at the competition. He said he thinks it has prepared him to succeed in Tulsa and to qualify for the national tournament.

“I feel like it’s given me a lot more time to train and I’ve got a lot more practice in on my own,” Geer said. “I haven’t had to worry about being tired or anything. If anything, it’s helped me get ready for big twelves and nationals.”

Greer, who is wrestling in his first season at OSU since transferring from Edinboro along with teammate Andrew Shomers, said there is a large difference in the caliber of wrestlers between OSU and the Eastern Wrestling League, which Edinboro wrestles in.

just hoping to get an AllAmerican, but here we’re expected to win the whole thing,” Geer said. “There’s definitely a different mentality in the team and what your teammates and coaches expect out of you.”

Weight shifts The Cowboys will see three wrestlers shift weights from what they have been wrestling at all season to the weight that they will compete at for the Big 12 tournament.

Along with Geer moving to 184, Jacobe Smith will move from 184 to 174 and is ranked as the No. 1 seed despite not competing at the weight since December.

Smith said that he feels that wrestling at 174 will give him a clear edge that he did not have at the higher weight.

“Strength,” Smith said.

“It’s more of a control strength rather than bursting to go score. Just being smart and having good tactics with my strength instead of just trying to power through to go score.”

Joe Smith (No relation) will be the Cowboys starter at 165 after defeating teammate Chandler Rogers in a wrestle off for the position on Monday night. Smith has not competed at 165 this season, but he is 14-4 at 174 and will be the No. 8 seed.

match, OSU coach John Smith said it was something that had to be done, and he thinks it will give his team it’s best chance to win.

“We’re Oklahoma State and we need to put our best team out and be competitive,” Smith said. “We take pride in that.”

First-timers With six No. 1 seeds, the Cowboys will not be in need of skill in Tulsa, but they will feature four newcomers to the Big 12 tournament.

Geer will be in his first Big 12 and second conference tournament in college, while Daton Fix (133), Kaden Gfeller (149) and Wyatt Sheets (157) will compete in their first conference tournaments Though it will be their first time at the Big 12 tournament, Fix and Gfeller are familiar with winning on the big stage. At Sand Springs and Heritage Hall, respectively, they combined for a 301-0 high school record and eight state titles. They will both be No. 1 seeds.

Sheets has gone 15-11 in his sophomore season and will be the No. 4 seed at 157.

The Big 12 was given one automatic qualifier at the 157 weight class, so he will have to win the weight to secure the spot in the national tournament.

Young philanthropists start making their mark early with StuFu

Ten years ago, a group of enthusiastic philanthropists joined together to change the future of Oklahoma State University — and today, their mission is stronger than ever.

The most impressive detail? These Cowboyinvesting, future-building, dream-chasing supporters are students.

The Student Foundation, lovingly known as StuFu, was founded in 2007 by 36 undergraduates. These ambassadors of the OSU Foundation set out on a mission to educate the student body on the impact of giving at Oklahoma State and communicate their utmost gratitude to the supporters that made their university dreams a reality.

StuFu is undoubtedly leaving its mark.

“Thanking donors was my initial draw,” Wenger said. “I’m affected as a scholarship recipient.

About 87 percent of students at Oklahoma State receive some type of financial aid, and many students would not be able to attend school without the help of generous donors.

“I think there’s a misconception that to be a donor, you have to be wealthy,” Wenger said. “And we want to break down that misconception.”

The continued outpouring of care from alumni and friends inspires Witcher. “Our passion for giving comes from how much support we receive,” he said. “When alumni give, there’s a fire ignited in

us. They have taught us that when we see a need, we take care of it.”

In his leadership position, Witcher promotes PhilanthoPete, the online crowdfunding platform through which student projects are funded. He said StuFu focuses on living out OSU’s culture of giving.

“When it comes to student involvement, they’re eager to join. We don’t have to sell the PhilanthroPete mindset to students.”

During the 1,890-minute Give Orange event last April, the student donor count exceeded 150 — surpassing the goal of 100 students in record time. Goals for Give Orange 2019 include spreading even more orange passion and increasing student involvement.

Four years ago, StuFu created the Cowboy Strong Emergency Fund.

The Cowboy Strong Emergency Fund provides resources for students who are experiencing financial hardships from natural disasters to personal emergencies. Like many other students, Clara Wenger has a strong passion for this project and is excited to see it making a difference.

“I helped plan the launch of Cowboy Strong — it’s a fund for students by students,” she said. “Students care about philanthropy — not out of a sense of obligation, but a sense of excitement.”

SPD: Eight people arrested in connection to theft ring Police are trying to connect stolen property to its rightful owners after a month-long investigation resulted in the arrest of eight people and the recovery of stolen property.

Since January, the Stillwater Police Department has been working with the Payne County Sheriff’s Office and Oklahoma State University Police Department to investigate a group that has committed burglaries in and around Stillwater, according to a press release from the SPD. During a traffic stop Feb. 5, police recovered several backpacks identified as stolen property and a .45 caliber pistol with an extended magazine. Police arrested the passenger, who is suspected of having ties to a criminal gang, according to the police report.

After the arrest, police searched the house listed as the passenger’s home address, where they found a pistol with a defaced serial number and stolen property from multiple burglaries. Evidence at the residence led them to other residences, which they searched with a warrant the following day.

Police pulled over a 17 year old suspected of being a member of the group on Feb. 7, according to a press release. The 17 year FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 2019

old was in possession of a handgun with a defaced serial number when he was arrested.

Police say the investigation isn’t over yet, though five adults and three juveniles have been arrested in connection with the group.

The property recovered has been traced to eleven different burglaries, with more property yet to be identified.

If you were a victim of a recent burglary that you did not report, police ask that you contact the police department so they can get the stolen property back to its owners. If you have already filed a police report, they are already comparing the items recovered to the description in the report and there is no need to call them again.

Shot fired at Stillwater apartment

There are a lot of things people don’t want to hear when playing video games, but a gunshot is probably at the top of that list. That is exactly what happened to one Stillwater resident Feb. 28, according to police reports.

Police responded to a call of shots fired at an apartment just after 10 p.m. Thursday when a man playing video games said he heard what sounded like a gunshot. He told police when he went into his living room, he found a bullet hole in his ceiling.

The shot came from the downstairs apartment, where the resident was

No one was injured, and the gun owner will be safer in the future, according to the report.

Illegal Gun Carry

Police arrested five people March 1 on charges including possession of methamphetamine, possession of a firearm after conviction of a felony and unlawful carry.

What began as a traffic stop because of an inappropriate use of fog lights ended with the arrest of everyone in the vehicle when police found drug paraphernalia and guns in the car, according to a police report.

The officer who pulled the car over recognized one of the passengers as a known felon with a reputa-

tion for carrying guns, according to the police report. One of the passengers had an open arrest warrant in another county.

After asking them to step out of the car, the officer noticed a syringe, a digital scale and a handgun in the car. The handgun was loaded and under the front passenger seat of the car, according to the report.

The officer found an unloaded gun under the backseat and a small bag with a white powder that field tested presumptive positive for methamphetamine, according to the

report.

All five suspects claimed they knew nothing about the loaded gun, according to the police report. All except the driver were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm after a felony conviction and were taken to the county jail.

The driver was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled dangerous substance.
