The moment Larry Sanchez glanced at Oklahoma State University and Stillwater in late 1998, he knew he was in the right place.

As he drove around the town and saw families play with their children in the parks surrounding the town and marveled at OSU’s campus, he called his wife. With a small shift of his tone of voice, his wife already knew and said, “We’re moving, aren’t we?”

“At first, I came more to see what the NCAA

thing was all about and wasn’t thinking about leaving New Mexico State,” Sanchez said.

“But once I came to Stillwater, I fell in love with the town.”

Within a few days, Sanchez was named the first coach for the equestrian team at OSU. What came after was something he probably didn’t expect.

In his first day as coach in 1999, there were no horses for the program, the official “headquarters” of the team was a tack room behind Totusek Arena that was a quarter the size of a generic classroom,

there was no running water in the locker rooms and a portable toilet was the best thing they had for a restroom.

“The girls on the club team would ride one of the girl’s private horse off campus the day before they leave for the competition and would ride that one horse,” Sanchez said. “I had to start putting together a horse herd and tacking equipment. We had absolutely nothing here.”

Sanchez was not discouraged. Coming from an athletic background, Sanchez has always had the mentality of facing things head on and using

what he’s been given.

“I don’t have the attitude of ever complaining about what I have,” Sanchez said. “I am one of those that looks at a situation and tries to figure out what I can do with what I have. It wasn’t about the facilities; it was about the recruiting, hard work and getting the right kids in here and teaching them how to be successful with what they had.”

Within one year of assembling a team, Sanchez and the Cowgirls won their first national championship at the IHSA national show.

Fast-forward to 2013.

Sanchez, donning his signature black cowboy hat, watched his team celebrate its fifth western NCEA national championship. The soonto-be 2013 NCEA coach of the year had his team riding high into the next season.

“That season was special because all of the girls on that western team were extremely talented,” said Lauren Daniels, a former AllAmerican horsemanship rider. “I think we were the best horsemanship team in the country, maybe ever. No one could beat us. We were like the dream team”

One year later, that excitement and drive turned into uncertainty and doubt.

Just like any 20-year relationship, there will always be low points.

The NCAA’s Committee on Women’s Athletics had the equestrian world on a swivel when it proclaimed the sport’s attempt to grow as an emerging sport had failed. When the NCEA was established in 2002, the NCAA gave it 10 years to establish 40 schools to add and finance an equestrian team. At that time, there were 22 teams.

“A gambit of emotions was running through my head,” Sanchez said. “I would ask myself, ‘am I going to have a job in the future’?”

Despite the scare, OSU Athletic Director Mike Holder assured Sanchez the equestrian team would stay intact no matter what the NCAA did.

“Equestrian has been such a great fit and provides the female participation numbers at an expense that he can afford,” Sanchez said. “That’s why he said, ‘we’re going to

keep it no matter what the NCAA does.’”

Fortunately, the NCAA decided to keep sponsoring collegiate equestrian to maintain the gateway for women to be able to compete.

“Us having an equestrian team at a college campus really increases it because it gives people the opportunity to do what they want to do,” OSU rider Kristi Wiggens said.

With all the noise of his job’s demise out of the way, Sanchez was able to get back to work, with nothing but growth to pursue and look forward to.

Now, every morning, the sun shines on the construction site of the new arena

right beside the team headquarters, resembling what the future will bring. With the new arena, the team will be able to ride and practice every day, a luxury it did not have in the past.

“All of the upgrades in facilities that we’ve had over the last year and a half have been a game changer for my team,” Sanchez said. “Adding this new covered arena out here, which will allow us to ride every day of the year outside is incredible.”

Sanchez’s office is plastered with six Big 12 championships and five NCEA trophies set on refined wood shelves. However, even with all the accolades, OSU and the NCAA have not recognized most of them.

The reason behind this is that equestrian is not an NCAA championship sport. With all the awards and accomplishments on his resume, Sanchez is taking it a step further by making the growth of the sport a priority.

“My goal is finally reaching that goal of making this an NCAA championship sport,” Sanchez said. “I would love it for our national championships to count towards that Directors’ Cup and bring another NCAA national championship to Oklahoma State.”

So far, that work is slowly paying off. The University of California, Davis, recently picked up equestrian to add to its athletics. In addition, the other competing NCAA

teams are getting better, and their horses are getting faster and stronger.

“Even when I was on the team, it wasn’t as competitive as it is now,” assistant coach Sammy Elser said.

“Every time we compete you’re going against better girls and nicer horses.”

Winning is not everything to Sanchez, though. Just as much as his team is a contender, it is equally, if not more, like a family. During 6 a.m. workouts, the team would see Sanchez there, making it known that he is in it just as much as they are. That bond and culture is something Sanchez has built during his tenure in Stillwater.

“I really like how Larry is

like a dad figure to us,” OSU All-American rider Harley Huff said. “Him and his wife will have us over for dinner.

He is very much involved with our lives. It really is like a family.”

The wrestling mat gets elevated for special occasions only.

Sunday will be one of those occasions when No. 3 Iowa comes to Stillwater to face the No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team.

The elevated mat has always symbolized big matches, most notably the final day of the NCAA championships.

Daton Fix, who hopes to find himself wrestling on the final day of the NCAA championships, said he has wrestled on elevated mats a few times and thinks it heightens the intensity.

“I’ve always loved wrestling on raised platforms,” Fix said.

Fix has a top 5 matchup

at 133 pounds on Sunday.

He will wrestle against No. 3 Austin DeSanto, who is 16-1.

DeSanto was suspended for Iowa’s dual against Maryland on Feb. 8 after being penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct against Nebraska on Feb. 3.

He was penalized for picking up his opponent, and before executing the matchclinching takedown, walking toward the Iowa bench and giving a thumbs up. After the takedown, he then did a shushing motion toward the Nebraska bench. It was the third time this season DeSanto had been penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct.

that,” Smith said. “Daton Fix goes out there and wrestles.

Nothing’s gonna affect him in anyway. Maybe a little of it’s been exaggerated, maybe it hasn’t, I don’t know. Seems to be something that’s distracting for everyone but the student

athlete… I don’t really see it being important.”

Fix echoed Smith’s thoughts, saying he doesn’t think DeSanto’s wrestling style will affect him.

“I’m pretty good at staying pretty composed when I’m on

the mat,” Fix said. “I’m just gonna go out there and wrestle like I always do, let my wrestling do the talking.”

Fix said rather than be a distraction, he sees DeSanto’s antics as motivation to win.

“It definitely motivates me,” Fix said. “Big matches always motivate me. I’ve always been the type of guy that loves wrestling those big matches and those big moments. This is just another one of those opportunities.”

Smith said he expects eight of the 10 wrestlers in the lineup on Sunday to be from Oklahoma.

“That’s rare,” Smith said.

“Possibly three kids from Stillwater that wrestled for Stillwater high. That’s rare.

Not only are you sporting Oklahoma State and this wres-

tling program, but Oklahoma kids.”

The last time OSU had a marquee matchup in Gallagher-Iba Arena was against Penn State on Feb. 19, 2017.

A familiar face was in the stands that day, cheering on the Cowboys.

“I was a fan last time we packed the house against Penn State, so I was just sitting there watching,” Fix said.

“Just kinda sitting back going, ‘Wow I could wrestle in front of this many people some day in Gallagher.’ Sunday I’m going to get that opportunity, so it’s definitely a dream come true.”

Gardner, the Oklahoma State baseball team’s starting second baseman, waited at third base. The Cowboys had loaded the bases against Little Rock, and OSU third baseman Andrew Navigato stood at the plate.

After Hayden Arnold, a Little Rock relief pitcher, threw the ball, catcher Garrett Scott broke a rule.

The Cowboys took advantage of the Trojans’ defensive mishaps for a dominant fourth inning. OSU defeated Little Rock 8-3 on a chilly Wednesday in its last home opener at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

In the fourth inning, the Cowboys (3-1) added five runs.

Josh Holliday, OSU’s coach, said he hadn’t seen a catcher snag the ball with his mask in a while.

“You know it’s a rule, having been an old catcher myself; you know (you) can’t stick your mask down and get the ball,” Holliday said. “…

It’s one of those funny plays that makes baseball kind of unique.”

Stillwater, hit a single to start the inning and reached second base when Arnold threw a wild pitch. Arnold walked Carson McCusker and Trevor Boone, sending Gardner to third before Scott’s illegal catch.

“When you load the bases with nobody out, you want to capitalize,” Holliday said.

“You don’t want to let that slip away.”

When Gardner scored, the Cowboys’ lead increased to 3-0.

After Navigato hit a single, the Trojans (0-4) replaced Arnold with Ethan Daily, but the pitching change didn’t help them escape the jam.

Although Max Hewitt, an OSU shortstop, was the first batter out, Colin Simpson

gave the Cowboys another surge of momentum.

Simpson, a senior catcher, smacked the ball toward second base, scoring McCusker and extending the Cowboys’ advantage to 4-0. He made it to first on a fielder’s choice as Little Rock made another defensive slipup. The ball flew past Eldridge Figueroa, the Trojans’ second baseman, and the error erased his opportunity to throw out Navigato, who advanced to second.

C.J. Varela, the Cowboys’ starting pitcher, was thankful for OSU’s outburst on offense.

“It gives me a lot of confidence knowing that my hitters are gonna go out there and score runs, and it’s my job just to go out there and not let (the

opponent) score,” Varela said.

The No. 18 Cowboys had loaded the bases again after Simpson’s RBI, and the scoring continued. Boone crossed home plate to give OSU a 5-0 lead when Christian Funk, a senior first baseman, grounded out to first base.

With two outs, designated hitter Bryce Carter batted. He fired a single to right field, bringing Simpson and Navigato home for a 7-0 lead.

“We had a good scouting report on (Daily),” Carter said. “Got ahead in the count, got a hitter’s count, and I just took advantage of a mistake pitch that he put over the plate.”

Carter, a graduate transfer from Stanford, led the Cowboys with three RBIs in

his debut at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

Cade Cabbiness struck out looking and stranded Carter on first to end the inning, finally easing Little Rock’s struggles.

Despite the fourth-inning spark, Holliday said the Cowboys have room to grow.

“We gotta improve as a team in situational hitting opportunities; we know that,” Holliday said. “Some of those things early in the year, you have to learn to relax in those situations and not try too hard, so we’ll get better at that.”

Chamber Music Festival offers free concert and masterclasses

The second annual McKnight Center for the Performing Arts Chamber Music Festival offers everyone the chance to see and learn from worldclass musicians.

The festival runs Feb. 25-March 3, culminating with a free community concert at Oklahoma State University’s Seretean Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. on March 2.

“This second annual Chamber Music Festival offers a unique cultural experience and demonstrates the potential of the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts to connect our campus, our region and the national fine arts community,” OSU President Burns Hargis said.

“It is a nice, relaxed, fun evening of incredible chamber music,” said Mark Blakeman, the McKnight Center’s Marilynn and Carl Thoma executive director. “We invite people to come out and give it a try. If it feels a little intimidating, this is a great introduction.

If they love chamber music, they will certainly love this.”

More than 250 prospective employers are expected at Gallagher-Iba Arena next week for two career fairs hosted

by Oklahoma State University Career Services.

The program, titled “Just Great Music,” will feature musicians Annie-Marie McDermott (piano), Alexander Kerr (violin), Tara Helen O’Conner (flute), and the St. Lawrence Quartet, which includes Geoff Nuttall (violin), Owen Dalby (violin), Lesley Robertson (viola) and Christopher Costanza (cello).

“I am incredibly excited to return to Oklahoma for season two of the McKnight Center Chamber Music Festival,” pianist and Artistic Director Anne-Marie McDermott said. “It’s a rare opportunity to connect with audiences in a more intimate way and share my great passion and love of chamber music.”

As part of their week-long residency, musicians will be leading four masterclasses on the OSU campus that are open to the public.

Police arrested a man on Feb. 8 who was out on bond after he was charged with burglary in 2018 in connection with a burglary at the Sigma Nu fraternity house.

The Stillwater and Oklahoma State University Police departments arrested Christian Dion Bellows, 28, after residents of the Sigma Nu fraternity house identified him as the man who entered the fraternity house around 2 a.m. and started trying to open locked doors, according to police reports.

When one of the residents on the third floor approached Bellows, Bellows said that he was looking for his friend’s wallet, according to court documents.

The resident told him he would have to ask someone on the first floor for help. When Bellows went downstairs he was escorted out of the building, according to police reports.

After Bellows left the building, an OSU police officer who recognized him from the dispatch’s description stopped him, according to police reports.

Stillwater PD and OSUPD arrested a man in connection with a robbery at the Sigma Nu fraternity house.

The police report states that residents of

the Sigma Nu fraternity house had noticed things missing over the past two weeks, including $400 missing from the wallet of one of the

members. The second degree burglary charge is added to two counts of first degree burglary and one of attempted first degree burglary from 2018, according to court documents.

Bellows was arrested at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity house in May 2018, after a resident saw Bellows go into his room about 4 a.m., according to the probable cause affidavit from the 2018 charges.

When the resident told Bellows to get out, Bellows responded that he was looking for his wallet, and then ran, according to the affidavit. Residents from the fraternity house chased

Bellows and detained him until police arrived.

Bellows has not been convicted on the 2018 burglary charges, and was out on a personal recognizance bond – which is a no-charge bond – when he was arrested in connection with the burglary at the Sigma Nu fraternity house.

Bellows has two prior burglary convictions.

Review: Don’t get lost in the eyes in ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ M egan Hays ,

If you can get past the anime eyes, this movie will surprise you with its CGI effects and characters.

“Alita: Battle Angel” is based on the Japanese manga “Gunnm” centered on a girl cyborg found in the scrap yard that falls from the last floating city after a war referred to as the “Fall.”

Dr. Dyson Ido (Christopher Waltz), a doctor who specialises in repairing cyborgs, finds and fixes up Alita (Rosa Salazar). When FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2019

Alita wakes up she has no memory of how she ended up in the scrapyard or anything else related to her past life.

Dr. Ido gives her the name Alita and begins to take care of her as she starts to adjust to her life.

The movie follows her as she starts to discover herself and what she is, all while she tackles typical teenage problems including her first love and a group of cyborg bounty hunters.

The biggest apprehension people have about the movie is Alita’s alien-like eyes that look almost disturbing in the trailers that

came out before the film’s release. The eyes appear to be a nod to the manga origins of the movie and, while jarring at first, slowly become less noticeable as the plot starts to thicken.

Other than the eyes, Alita’s CGI body is spectacularly animated, as are the rest of the cyborgs. Grewishka (Jackie Earle Haley), a hulking cyborg sent to kill Alita, moves like a robot of his size and build would, which adds to the effect of intimidation and believability though the metal muscles are not real.

As for the plotline,

there are certain cliches the movie lets itself fall into from the bad boy meeting a girl to change his ways to the dead daughter trope.

Even so, the movie used them sparingly and focused more on the development of the more important plots, like Alita discovering bit of her past and the budding romance between her and Hugo (Keean Johnson).

Like many bookto-movie adaptations, “Alita: Battle Angel” struggled with juggling several subplots along with the overarching plot of the story, which is a difficult thing to

accomplish in a twohour movie format.

Although the beginning of the flim did a fantastic job of worldbuilding and introducing characters, as thecredits started to get closer and closer, the subplots were rushed, and audiences were not given the ending they were expecting.

The ending might have hinted at a sequel, for Alita had not solved the bigger problem discovered later in the movie, but it still felt as if it ended too soon.

With all that said, the movie still has a charm to its characters. Alita, though she is a cyborg,

is the most humanlike character in the film with flaws the movie

doesn’t try to hide. The characters do help with the time-constrained plot and give the audience someone to relate to and root for.

“Alita: Battle Angel” is a movie with endearing and realistic characters, but it suffers from a plot line better suited for a Netflix series.
