Editor’s Note: Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis sat down on Feb. 19 to talk about race issues on college campuses, good music and his time here at OSU. In a threepart O’Colly series, we’ll delve into all things “One on One with Burns.” First up, confronting diversity issues on college campuses.

Seated in his office overlooking Library Lawn, President Hargis spoke about Nancy Randolph Davis and the steps she pioneered toward progress on campus.

“She was a lovely lady,” he said. “It took a lot of

courage for her to come in and be the only AfricanAmerican on campus.”

On Jan. 31, OSU revealed a statue of Davis, the first African-American enrollee at OSU. The statue portrays a vivid moment of hope and progress: a young Davis with a graduation cap on her head, master’s degree in her hand, chin held high and eyes pointed toward the future.

“I think it’s incredibly important to recognize someone like her,” Hargis said.

Hargis said Davis was a friend later on in life. He even spoke at her funeral.

shy away from the sticky discourse about issues of race on college campuses.

“One of the biggest problems we have in the whole diversity effort is that people want to be around people that look like them,”

Hargis said.

President Hargis called for well-established student organizations, such as Mortar Board, Student Alumni Board, Homecoming and others to broaden their criteria of acceptance.

Involvement and accolades, Hargis said, look different for people of different backgrounds.

Because of this, he called for student organizations to diverge from the traditional criteria.

“The only way you can develop empathetic leaders is by talking to people different than you,” Hargis said.

Hargis said he believes that through broadening the representation within student organizations, the student body can grow in understanding and empathy. Additionally, with understanding and empathy, the occurrence of racist incidents on college campuses can significantly decrease.

When asked about the recent blackface incidents at OU, President Hargis took a strong stance. He said education and empathy are the anecdote to so many of these issues.

By working to understand and embrace people who are different from you, Hargis said a new era of leaders can build upon the foundation of diversity strong leaders built before us, leaders like Nancy Randolph Davis.

“Change requires pioneers,” Hargis said.

With popular songs like “Ignition (Remix),” “Bump n’ Grind” and “I Believe I Can Fly,” famed singer, songwriter and producer Robert Kelly, also known as R. Kelly, has always been at the forefront of the Rhythm and Blues industry.

Recently, however, R. Kelly has been at the forefront of nothing but national news because of allegations of child pornography, abuse, domestic violence, running a sex cult and more.

After years of dodging allegations and staying

out of jail, R. Kelly was arrested with no chance of bail Friday with 10 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving four victims, including at least three between the ages of 13 and 17, according to court documents.

This feels as if it has been a long time coming, and now that he has officially been charged, I believe it is time to make it known that these types of actions are absolutely unacceptable, regardless of someone’s celebrity status.

So often celebrities get off easy for their crimes, serving lesser sentences or no time at all for crimes that regular citizens could serve years for.

Considering that there is no telling what the future holds with the R. Kelly case, now is the time to make a statement.

It’s time to officially #MuteRKelly.

I believe this is something that needs to continue. I would even go as far as to urge music streaming services to remove R. Kelly’s music from their products.

No one should want to profit off the music of someone like R. Kelly especially now there has been an arrest.

In my opinion, his actions are absolutely disgusting and being in jail isn’t enough. If he is still making money off his music, then what is the point?

Several celebrities have spoken out against R. Kelly already, including John

Legend, Jamie Lee Curtis and Kerry Washington.

The Women of Color chapter of the Time’s Up movement began this call to action, and now it is time for it to really kick off.

R. Kelly deserves more than just jail time. Taking away his income is the best way to show some sort of action is being taken against him.

Feb. 13 marked the 10-year anniversary of Drake’s debut mixtape, “So Far Gone.”

To celebrate the occasion, the Toronto-based rapper released the project on all digital platforms, including Spotify and Apple Music.

The re-release of “So Far Gone” is an opportunity to look back at the beginning of the decadelong, chart-topping career that came from Wheelchair Jimmy from “Degrassi.”

All the way through, “So Far Gone” follows the formula of every Drake album: rap verses about lost love and R&B hooks emotional struggles. However, to understand the impact of “So Far Gone,” you must look at it in the context of the year it came out.

In 2009, the hip-hop industry was just coming down from the ‘bling bling’ era. Lil Wayne was littered across the Billboard charts and Soulja Boy was just blowing up.

Most significantly, Kanye West had just dropped “808s & Heartbreak,” an album that rewrote the rules for a rap album.

To say that Drake’s music career wouldn’t exist without “808s & Heartbreak” would be an understatement. It was the first album featuring a rapper exchanging rapping for

singing. The lyrics were emotional and lovelorn. It shocked the industry and inspired a new generation of rappers who aren’t afraid to sing.

This influence can be drawn directly to “So Far Gone,” specifically the track “Say What’s Real.”

The song features Drake singing and rapping over the instrumental to Kanye West’s “Say You Will” from the album “808s & Heartbreak.”

“Say What’s Real” is Drake acknowledging the influence that he got from Kanye. The rest of the mixtape is Drake taking this new style to a new level. Significant moments of this new style include late night club banger “Houstatlantavegas”and “Successful,” a classic Drake record about reaching for the stars with features from Trey Songz and Drake’s mentor Lil Wayne.

Much of the commercial success of “So Far Gone,” as well as much of Drake’s career, is owed to Lil Wayne’s mentorship.

Wayne discovered Drake’s talent prior to the release of “So Far Gone,” immediately signing him to his Young Money label and providing four features on Drake’s debut mixtape.

By taking the melodic and heartbroken singing of “808s & Heartbreak” and blending it with the southern rap influences passed down from his mentor,

Drake created a new wave within the hip-hop industry. Over the course of a decade, this style has grown and inspired a generation of artists who walk in the path created by this mixtape.

Looking back at “So Far Gone” 10 years later, now that Drake has more Billboard chartings than the Beatles, the power of the project can finally be felt. With the mid-2018 release of Drake’s latest album, “Scorpion,” he had the top song in the county.

As Drake topped the charts, it was announced that hip-hop had grown to the point of making up over 70 percent of all top 10 hits in 2018, according to Billboard. That is over double the amount of hiphop records in the top 10 compared to the previous year.

The growth in hip-hop’s popularity and the emergence of a rap superstar capable of blending genres is not a coincidence. In the past decade, there has rarely been a major moment in the hip-hop industry that hasn’t had Drake attached to it in some way.

No matter what he does next, there is no doubt that drake has gone so far.
