At T. Boone Pickens’ 80th birthday party, he gave an invisible but lifealtering gift to Anne and Michael Greenwood.

The Greenwoods and other members of the Oklahoma State community congregated on Library Lawn to celebrate Pickens on May 22, 2008.

In typical Pickens fashion, he was donating $100 million for OSU faculty endowment.

His words inspired the Greenwoods, OSU alumni who had chosen to retire in Stillwater, more than the large sum of money could have.

“He made comments about, basically, we should give now, not later, because you don’t get the chance to see the impact that you can have,” Anne Greenwood said. “And it struck a huge chord with my husband Michael and I.” Pickens, an OSU alumnus and energy magnate, died at 91 on Sept. 11

after decades of witnessing the ways his generous contributions transformed his alma mater. OSU honored him with a Celebration of Life on Wednesday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena, adjacent to the football stadium that bears his name.

on OSU. The Cowboy Marching Band started it with the upbeat drums and horns of OSU fight songs, creating an environment reminiscent of the football game day atmosphere that Pickens helped create with his NCAA-record-setting $165 million donation to revamp the stadium.

Ten years ago, a mulletless Gundy stood beside Pickens, who held oversized scissors to cut the bright orange ribbon at the opening of Boone Pickens Stadium. Gundy said he never saw Pickens prouder than he was on Sept. 5, 2009, before the Cowboys defeated Georgia in their upgraded venue.

“I could see it in his face, I could see it in his eyes on the walk before the Georgia game,” Gundy said. “He was bursting with pride, and it was pride in his university, in the place that he loved.”

Although Pickens watched OSU evolve because of him, he couldn’t see the full extent of his alma mater’s gratitude for him. President Burns Har-

gis said he wishes a statue of Pickens, which is in the works, could have stood on campus when Pickens was alive.

The statue, like Pickens’ legacy, isn’t finished, but Pickens made sure he could see as much of his impact as possible. His action-focused mentality was apparent in a quote that appeared in a tribute video at the Celebration of Life.

“If you are going to run with the big dogs,” Pickens said, “you have to get out from under the porch.”

Pickens didn’t simply run. He encouraged others to run with him, something Anne Greenwood never forgets.

“Honest to goodness, Boone Pickens taught us in so many ways and inspired us in so many ways to think that anything is possible,” Anne Greenwood said. “And so that’s a huge gift, and I appreciate it, and that’s one of the things that we’re absolutely gonna miss.”

It was a common sight in the Oklahoma State football team’s first loss of the season.

A talented Longhorn defense shut down Hubbard and OSU’s running game, which had been dominant for the opening three weeks.

Offensive line coach Charlie Dickey is known as a tough grader in the film room. He made sure his guys know what they need to do

better moving forward. “(Dickey) will grade you hard, even the smallest things.” guard Marcus Keyes said. “We just need to finish our blocks more, don’t let people cross our face. We’ll be better with that.”

Hubbard gained 121 yards, but he needed a monstrous 37 carries to do it. He averaged just 3.3 yards per rush, after gaining 7.3 through the first three games.

Hubbard didn’t use the lack of running room as an excuse; He was disappointed in his individual performance last week.

“You’re always gonna make mistakes in a game,” Hubbard said. “I made a lot. But I watched the film, I

learned from it and I moved on. I’ll be better for my team, and it’s a big week.”

The running game will have a chance to rebound Saturday against Kansas State at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Galloway suffering an injury at Texas, other linemen like Ry Schneider have had to step up in his place.

Keyes said they will be comfortable with whoever has to fill in. The offensive line’s experience will be a benefit in that regard.

He added a simple answer on the offensive line’s key to the game.

“Be tougher than them,” Keyes said.

Despite his huge workload against the Longhorns, Hubbard said his body feels good.

Coach Mike Gundy doesn’t like giving him the ball so many times, but feels it is the team’s best option because Hubbard is clearly

The running back room may get some reinforcements in the coming weeks, though.

Redshirt freshman Jahmyl Jeter and junior college transfer Dezmon Jackson have recently made their returns to practice.

But even with those returns, Hubbard will still be running the show. The nation’s leading rusher is ready for a chance to redeem himself this week.

“K-State knows what to do and they’re coached well,” Hubbard said. “I feel there are talented guys on every team (in the Big 12) so you better bring it every snap. If you don’t, we could end up just like last week.”

‘His legacy will live on forever’: leaders reflect about how T. Boone Pickens touched their lives at his Celebration of Life D RU NORTON staff reporter @ocolly

Crowds of students, alumni, friends and family arrived at Gallagher-Iba Arena on Wednesday with one thing in common: their admiration for T. Boone Pickens.

The celebration of Pickens’ life began with the Cowboy Marching Band playing the fight songs while everyone in the arena clapped and chanted along.

Larry Reece, Sr. Associate Athletic Director, began the ceremony by reminding the audience that now is not the time to mourn.

“As you can tell, this is going to be more of a pep rally than a memorial,” Reece said.

“Today is not a somber occasion. Today is a day we celebrate our number one fan, the leader of the band and a man that left us better than he found us.”

Along with Reece, speakers at the celebration of life included Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, President Burns Hargis, philanthropist Anne Greenwood, football coach Mike Gundy and OSU athletic director Mike Holder spoke.

Each speaker not only expressed their gratitude for Pickens’ contributions to the university, but also shared a personal story of a time Pickens made an impact on their lives.

Reece spoke of the difficult time in his life when he was diagnosed with throat cancer and how Pickens was there for him.

“When I called Boone, he assured me by saying, ‘Larry, by the end of the day, you will have a phone call from MD Anderson and you will be in good hands,’” Reece said. “I’m now standing here four years and eight months cancer free because of the prayer posse, a lot of you, and because of my friend, Boone Pickens.”

Gov. Stitt, an OSU alumnus, spoke of the three pieces of advice he received from Pickens during his run for governor.

“Number one, he said, be willing to make decisions. Or, as he said it to me that day, you can aim, aim, aim but eventually, you’ve got to fire,” Stitt said. “And number two, he said, learn from your mistakes, because Kevin, you’re going to make a bunch of them.”

Stitt said the third piece of advice resonated with him the most.

“Number three, he said, be humble and hold fast to faith, as it is the compass that guides us, even in dark times,” Stitt said.

Philanthropist Anne Greenwood reflected on a statement Pickens made that changed her life forever.

why people wait until they’re gone to give back, so they can’t see the difference they have made,’” Greenwood said. “That profound statement struck a chord with Mike and I.” Coach Gundy spoke of the happiness Pickens felt on the opening of Boone Pickens Stadium.

“When it finally opened, I could see it in his eyes, he had a feeling that was just different than I had ever seen,” Gundy said.

“He was bursting with pride. It was pride in his university, in the place he loved.”

For athletic director Mike Holder, Pickens was his best friend and a father figure.

Holder met Pickens in 1973 through a mutual

friend, Jerry Walsh, at an OSU golf fundraiser.

While Holder always admired Pickens as a businessman, they didn’t grow to be close friends until 1995 when their mutual friend Jerry Walsh passed away in a tragic car accident.

Pickens invited Holder to hunt quail with him at his ranch in Pampa, Texas.

“I wasn’t a quail hunter,” Holder said.

“But I knew that he needed somebody, so I took that invitation and went to hunt quail with him. Little did I know what I was about to experience.”

From 1995 to 2000, Holder spent many days at the ranch with Pickens.

Boone Pickens and getting to spend time at the ranch, I can’t tell you how special that was,” Holder said. “He was a coach with hunting quail and he was a life coach.

I don’t know what was better, the quail hunting or the dinners and conversations we had.”

Holder said some of the best memories of his life were spent hunting quail with Boone Pickens.

“Those five years were the greatest five years of my life, I would go back there tomorrow,” Holder said. “If I had to pick when to go back and spend time with Boone Pickens, I want to go back before all the money and all the success, I want to go back and hunt quail at

the ranch.

“He changed my whole life in those five years. The way I thought about my job, the way I thought about the world, the way I thought about success, the way I treated people. All of it was because of mostly the way he treated me and everybody around him at the ranch,” Holder said. “He treated everybody as equal. He was really a giant among men that acted like the common man.”

President Hargis spoke of the bond Boone and Holder shared at a press conference before the ceremony.

“Sometimes, Boone would say about Mike, ‘That guy makes me so mad,’” Hargis said.

“You know, there is nobody more stubborn on Earth than Mike. If he didn’t want to do something Boone wanted to do, it didn’t happen. It made Boone crazy. It was like a father-son relationship.”

The ceremony was closed with the crowd cheering Boone Pickens name and singing the alma mater.

Accounting junior Spencer Webster said the ceremony was a great way to celebrate Pickens life.

“I loved hearing about all the amazing things Boone has done, not only this university, but for everyone he encountered in life,” Webster said. “His legacy will live on forever.”

Julianne Thomison started her night of being crowned Miss OSU on the floor.

She sat in front of a full-length mirror in one of the small room in the backstage of the Student Union Theater teasing her hair for volume so she didn’t get lost on stage.

“I have the magic teasing brush and I’m trying to make my hair as big as it can get because when you go on stage it’s going to look a lot smaller,” Thomison said. “You always want to do things over the top and as big as possible so it looks normal on stage.”

The nine contestants were getting ready for the pageant Wednesday.

As the sound production tested out the background music for the competition, the women were sharing the mirrors and helping apply hair spray.

“Every single pageant, even though it’s different in its own way, it’s kind of the same backbone in every single competition you do,” Thomison said.

“It never ceases to amaze me and I love every second of it. The relationships are the best part of the girls you get to get ready with back stage…

The competition aspect of it really isn’t there, it’s about helping each other

with hair and question and zipping each other in dressing.”

Elizabeth Shelton, Miss OSU 2019, was there getting ready with the contestants and was helping a woman with her hair spray. As a veteran competitor, she feels that’s what she should be doing.

“They’re familiar so they can help the rookies who are not super sure, probably super nervous, a lot of things going through their minds,” Shelton said. “So having those young women back here that are soothing people and encouraging people, giving hugs and pieces of advice, I think that’s what you see back here. You come back here and that’s what you see.”

The competitors spend weeks leading up to the pageant for 90 seconds of a performance while also preparing for onstage interviews and planning a platform to campaign for if they are crowned Miss OSU. Kennedy Kerr spent weeks readying for everything the competition could throw at her.

“The past few weeks I’ve been running over where I stand on different subjects, making sure that I can present myself in a professional manner and still present that I’m a human,” Kerr said.

Julianne Thomison was crowned Miss OSU 2020 on Wednesday night. As a firstyear graduate student in mass communications, Thomison competed in onstage interviews, a talent portion and an evening wear section where the participants introduced their running platform. Thomison sat down with the O’Colly for a short interview about what being crowned, her platform and what she wants students to know about her.

Q: How are you feeling right now?

A: “I am ecstatic. I have

wanted to be Miss OSU for as long as I can remember, it is such a special title. At Miss Oklahoma, we call it a mini Miss Oklahoma. I am so so honored to represent my university at the state pageant and throughout the year on our campus.”

Q: Who were you looking for in the crowd when they announced you as the winner?

A: “Well I had a very big cheering section in the left-hand side that supported me the whole entire journey of competing tonight. I was definitely looking for them and the judges who are giving me the opportunity, so I said a big thank you to them as well.”

Q: Could you talk about the duties of Miss OSU? A: “I really want to dive into the community and give back.

fortunate to get to know several of the Miss OSUs and I actually had several conversations leading up to the pageant to really understand what is the job of Miss OSU. I’ve been fortunate to be dear friends with several of them. It’s true joy and I’m excited to join the sisterhood.”

Q: What do you want students to know about you?

A: “So I think I’m the very first grad student to ever be crowned Miss OSU. I’m also employed by the university so I kind of like to think that I’m representing both the staff and the students. It really consumes my whole entire life … I’m just so honored to represent this university and I could not be more excited for a wonderful year.”

‘Hustlers’ leaves much to be desired Sa di e G r on igan S taff Writ er @ O co lly

“Hustlers”, an exotic, audacious story, is based on real life events.

Directed by Lorene Scafaria, the star-studded film is a depiction of New York based strippers who fall into a pattern of illegal activities, including the excessive drugging and thievery of Wall Street CEOs and executives. The storyline is narrated by Dorothy, a dancer under the pseudonym “Destiny”, as she confesses to a reporter the depth of her and her partner’s schemes.

On the surface, “Hustlers” appears to be a typical Hollywood film capitalizing on the sexualization of women while disguising it as empowerment, but the movie encapsulates more than just the life of an exotic dancer.

The storyline tracks young Dorothy, played by Constance Wu, as she begins working at a Manhattan strip club called “Moves”. Within the first few minutes of the show, the audience is shown what Dorothy’s life is like when she leaves the club. Dorothy is struggling to make ends meet, while also trying to take care of her dying

grandmother, until she meets Ramona, a saucy superstar at the nightclub. The two embark on a star-crossed companionship that eventually results in their demise. The development of their relationship is an artistic depiction of a downward spiral into a frenzy of partying, shopping and stripping.

The repeated themes from the lives of the strippers throughout the movie were not a ploy created by male producers to appeal to female audiences. The movie didn’t depict female empowerment and a glamorous lifestyle as a way to sell us sex.

Nothing about the movie is glamorous except the ambient red, purple and pink lighting of the clubs. There were times simply looking the screen was hard because of how disgusting the customers in the night club behaved and treated the women.

This movie also confronts how the word “stripper” is commonly demonized, disrespected and frowned upon. Once the viewer can see the obstacles that Dorothy and her clique had to overcome, they may have been softened to the idea of a pole dancer.

“Hustlers” shows the viewer that stippers are not sexual objects, but humans with their

own lives and reasons for doing what they have to do. Regardless of their downfall, these women made a statement that being a stripper is more than meets the eye.

The trailers released for “Hustlers” were misleading in that the film appeared to encompass the glamorous and scandalous lives of successful New York strippers. However, it is much more than just dignifying their sexual behavior and their risqué lifestyle.

Artistically coordinated, this film tells the true story of a young woman befriending a glorified pimp.

“Hustlers” portrays the sobering reality of how greed paired with an imprudent lifestyle can ruin the lives of anyone involved.

Though the role of a stripper is not highly regarded, it is not the cause of their failure.

“Hustlers” is a disappointingly accurate reflection of society’s disrespect and ambivalence of women. The over-sexualizing of women is a prevalent issue, and Scafaria was able to shine a light on the worth of these women.

Every woman has worth. Every woman has value, and not a single woman is worth just what her physical appearance can offer to a man.

The Oklahoma State soccer team heads into Big 12 play with an undefeated record on the line.

The Cowgirls (7-0-2) will travel to Texas this weekend to face two Big 12 opponents. They will play Texas Tech (8-0-1) on Thursday and TCU (6-3-0) on Sunday.

OSU lost to both teams last season and is looking for redemption heading into this weekend.

“I think we’re pretty motivated and there is a little bit of redemption I think a lot of these teams beat us last year and a little bit of payback

wouldn’t be a bad thing,” Coach Carmichael said.

The Cowgirls have a historically winning record against both teams but have struggled in recent years.

“They are always very physical, they never back down, they’re always definitely one of those teams we have challenges against,” defender Charmé Morgan said. “[but] we’ve been playing a lot of home games here recently the last couple of weeks so I think it’ll be a nice travel trip.”

The team has faced top tier teams such as Penn State and Oklahoma on the road and came away with a win and a tie this season.
