Review: ‘Venom’ offers twist on anti-hero

Tom Hardy brings one of Marvel Comics’ most interesting anti-heroes to life in Sony Pictures’ “Venom.”

“Venom” follows investigative journalist Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) as he attempts to bring down Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) and his corporation when allegations of illegal human testing arise against the company. After controversy causes Eddie to lose everything, a last-ditch effort to bring down the corporation ends with Eddie paired with Venom, a violent alien symbiote. Now it is up

to Eddie and Venom to coexist to stop Drake and the evil symbiote Riot from ending the world.

Although there is not a great amount of character development, Hardy shows the most as he transitions from a self-centered journalist to a man who selflessly saves the world and the people he loves. Hardy also offers comedy that is genuinely funny to a character who is usually taken too seriously.

Fans can tell Hardy had fun with this role.

Universe, it does offer something different that fans of superhero movies will find refreshing. With equal levels of hilarity and action, there is something here for everyone to enjoy.

The only thing “Venom” suffers from is a loss of identity. It is apparent the writers were not sure what direction to take, as it mixes comedy and action in a way that doesn’t always fit.

Venom, who is supposed to be a scary and violent symbiote, usually acts as the comic relief and the source of intense action at the same time. Although the combination is weird and won’t work for everyone, it offers a take

on the character that fans haven’t seen yet.

As typical with Marvel movies, “Venom” offers two post-credits scenes. One perfectly sets up a sequel with a character that fans of Marvel Comics have been dying to see on the silver screen.

Moviegoers and comic book fans looking for a fun and action-packed film that deviates from the formulaic superhero movie can look no further than “Venom.”

Sparse boos rained down and conflicted with the Cowboy marching band’s playing of the alma mater and Iowa State fans chanting “I-S-U” in their respective corners as they celebrated in Boone Pickens Stadium.

As the final whistle blew, signifying the end of another conference loss at home, the rest of the players in black uniforms trotted off the turf while Taylor Cornelius stayed under the lights.

Cornelius, the starting quarterback on the Oklahoma State football team, wanted all of his teammates to be safely within the Cowboys’ tunnel before jogging off himself, making sure to high-five as many of them as he could.

“Just (wanted to) pick their heads up,” Cornelius said. “We got each other’s back, I know they got mine. We’re in this together.”

Coach Mike Gundy usually likes to evaluate Cornelius’ performance after each game, win or lose, but he said he couldn’t give an accurate evaluation after Saturday’s loss because he thought Cornelius was running for his life the entire game.

“It’s not easy to play quarterback and throw the ball when you’re running for your life,” Gundy said.

of the pocket.”

Cornelius was flushed out of the pocket almost every time he dropped back to pass in OSU’s 4842 loss to the Cyclones on Saturday, and it seemed like he was sacked at least once or twice on every offensive drive.

But even as defensive linemen plowed through the protection with ease, Cornelius never gave up on plays, often holding on to the ball as long as physically possible as he sprinted between the two sidelines searching for an open receiver.

“I think there was a toughness factor to him,” offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said. “He’s always gonna play his tail off, and he’s always gonna try to give his guys a shot.”

Although the Cowboy offense struggled as a whole, Yurcich complimented Cornelius’ protection of the ball within the passing game as OSU attempted to come back late in the fourth quarter, which he noted is difficult to do because the defense knew he was trying to throw the ball.

“When you scramble and you extend plays, you gotta be careful not to turn the ball over,” Yurcich said. “There was one late I think he forced in there.

Obviously you can’t force it in there, but I think the situation of the game, I think he felt pressed to force that ball down the field.

“I think he made some great plays.”

Cornelius finished with 289 yards through the air, four touchdowns and one interception, but he was understandably critical of himself after the game, likely because of the outcome as a whole rather than anything individualistic he could’ve done better.

Through the eyeball test, Cornelius had probably the best individual performance of his career.

He looked exponentially more comfortable throwing the ball down the field, as he connected with several of his receivers to perfection in man-to-man situations deep down the sidelines, dropping the ball directly into their breadbaskets on a number of throws, even on some incompletions that were dropped.

But through his frustration, he made sure he was the last Cowboy off the field after the game, noting the importance of his leadership role on the team as they voyage through the belly of a hectic college football season.

“We got a lot of games left,” Cornelius said. “We can’t let this one ruin the season by any means.

We’ve got a whole lot of football left. We’re ready for it.

“Obviously it sucks. We gotta get ready for Kansas State tomorrow.”
