For many programs, the time is now to seek out internships. However, you might find yourself wondering where to even begin.

OSU management and information systems senior Matt Tucker recently had the opportunity to intern for Disney last summer.

There, he focused on improving the ‘Disney Now’ app in Burbank, California.

Tucker described the application process for FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2019

this position as extremely competitive.

There was only one spot to fill and myriad amount of candidates who wanted it as much as he did. So what made him stand out?

Tucker attributed his success to his skill of “selling himself” to people.

“It’s all about making a connection,” Tucker said. “You can answer questions well, but you can also lose the personality aspect of it.

When you’re interviewing, you’re not just trying to sell where you’ve been, but you’re selling

your personality, as well.”

It is a common misconception among students that being book smart will bring you success. Tucker believes this theory is only half of the picture.

“A lot of time in modern colleges, personal sell skills are overlooked,” Tucker said. “You could go to Harvard, or you could go to Cornell and be super intelligent, but if you don’t have those personality skills, if you aren’t able to be yourself, you’re not going to get the job.”

Getting the job is only half of the battle; the other half starts with applying.

Anyone who has ever applied for anything knows applying is arguably the hardest part. The paperwork is lengthy, and more often than not, nothing comes of it. It can be an extremely discouraging process. Nonetheless, however grueling or disheartening, Tucker argues perseverance is the best attribute you could have during this process to reap success.

“Apply,” Tucker said.

discouraged. Don’t think they don’t want you. Maybe it’s just not your time.”

Tucker revealed that this was not the first time he had applied for this same internship.

All of those previous attempts didn’t even grant him an interview.

However, he kept going. Networking was another goal he had in mind.

“Networking is so important,” Tucker said.

“Take any opportunity you can just to talk to people. Even if nothing comes of it, at least you got to make that con-

nection.”

Tucker has three key takeaways: Put yourself out there and apply, take any opportunity to network and sell yourself well, and never give up.

Today, Tucker’s hard work has paid off, and job offers from big-name companies are already presenting themselves.

“It truly just comes with time,” Tucker said. “You won’t get it your first try, but if you just keep doing it, your chance will come eventually.”

The cast on Devin Harper’s left hand is sometimes a nuisance to him, but it’s no problem on the football field.

Although it keeps him from tying his shoes and cooking, it doesn’t hinder him when he makes tackles as an Oklahoma State linebacker. Sometimes Harper and Amen Ogbongbemiga, a fellow linebacker whose right hand is in a cast, can use the protective support to their advantage.

“It really doesn’t bother me that much,” Harper said. “Me and Amen, we just wrap it up in some tape and then just go about it. It’s really, it’s more

helpful because you don’t have to worry about getting hit (directly on the hand), and you can use it as, I guess a tool to make plays.”

Harper, a redshirt junior from Knoxville, Tennessee, has given the Cowboy linebackers a boost since his return to the lineup Sept. 21 against Texas.

With injuries to Harper and others, OSU had a thin rotation of linebackers to start the season, but the position group has become the defense’s cornerstone. Malcolm Rodriguez, who moved from safety to fill a linebacker spot, and Ogbongbemiga lead the Cowboys with 42 tackles each.

“We’re further along than I

thought we would be,” coach Mike Gundy said.

Although Harper isn’t a starter, he has added another dimension to the dynamic group. Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles called him a great talent.

“He’s big and strong, and he’s very fast, and he does a great job against the run,” Knowles said. “We really missed him.”

Harper’s cast is a reminder of the setback he faced and his determination to reenter the lineup. After wearing a walking boot during the start of fall camp and recovering from a foot injury, a new challenge arose when he broke his left hand.

“He comes back from an

injury, and then he breaks his hand in practice like the first practice when he comes back, and he battles through that, too,” Knowles said. “So you really gotta give him a lot of credit.”

Harper worked toward a quick comeback with support from coaches and teammates such as his brother, freshman cornerback Thomas Harper.

Brock Martin, a redshirt sophomore defensive end, noticed Harper’s dedication.

“He’s been just begging to get back on the field, and working, really rehabbing,” Martin said. “And then he finally got back on the field, and you gotta take advantage of your opportunities, exactly what he’s doing.”

Harper has embraced wearing the cast. A big grin spread across his face when he talked about the collective nickname he and his roommate Ogbongbemiga have given themselves.

“We joke about it all the time,” Harper said. “I hurt my left hand, he hurt his right hand, and then we just came up with Cast Brothers.”

The Cast Bros, as they call themselves for short, played a major part in squelching Kansas State’s run game during the past weekend, prompting Ogbongbemiga’s usage of a CastBros hashtag on Twitter. Harper had one quarterback hurry and five tackles, including a key thirddown stop to force a three-

and-out in the first quarter.

“Without those guys, I don’t know if we would’ve won that game,” Martin said.

As the Cowboys prepare for their Saturday road matchup against Texas Tech, Harper still has untapped potential. After missing the first three games of the season, Harper isn’t back in normal playing shape yet, but he is getting there, Gundy said.

Harper said the pain in his foot is gone, and though the layers of stiff bandages are still wrapped around his hand and wrist, he is enjoying his revitalized active role.

“It’s been pretty good,” Harper said. “I feel brand new.”

When the Oklahoma State coaching staff moved one of its best tacklers, Malcolm Rodriguez, from safety to linebacker, it opened the door for a new hardhitting safety to emerge for the Cowboy defense.

Tre Sterling, a redshirt sophomore safety, led the Cowboys with seven tackles and a pass breakup in Saturday’s 26-13 win against Kansas State.

Sterling redshirted in 2017 and didn’t really see the field last season as a redshirt freshman.

tion coming on special teams, he compiled his only two tackles of the season on kickoffs in OSU’s Liberty Bowl victory against Missouri.

Rodriguez and the rest of OSU’s linebackers have played surprisingly well so far this season, as coach Mike Gundy said.

The group is doing better than he thought it would be, but Gundy credits Sterling’s improvement behind the linebackers as exceedingly important for OSU’s defensive progression.

“If you move (Rodriguez) down (to line-

backer) and (Sterling’s) not playing good, now you have to think about moving him back and going a different route,” Gundy said. “(Sterling has) made some really good plays and seems to be in the right spot most of the time. I’m excited about the improvement he’s made in just one year.”

Sterling, a 6-foot-1, 202-pound, hard-hitting tackler from Sunnyvale, Texas, said he was excited for the K-State matchup because the Wildcats are famous for running the football. He also said he prefers to come downhill and try to tackle ball-carriers,

compared to covering against the pass.

“That’s definitely my strong point, stopping the run,” Sterling said.

“I like to get physical.”

Sterling’s performance last Saturday was a big step for the relatively inexperienced safety, who joined a highly-experienced Cowboy secondary in the offseason. OSU’s defensive backs will face a different task this week than K-State’s rush-heavy gameplay when the No. 21 Cowboys visit Texas Tech at 11 a.m. Saturday. The Red Raiders will try to throw the football on them.

“My weakness is definitely the passing game, my coverage game and the man skills,” Sterling said. “That’s something I have to work on as a player to get better and to make our defense better.”

Sterling said the game has slowed down for him since his first career start six weeks ago, though he tallied a career-high nine tackles in OSU’s season opener against Oregon State.

“The first game is really hectic and chaotic,” Sterling said. “Just going everywhere, getting used to the speed of college football. Since I’ve played a couple

games, it’s definitely slowed down a lot. I’ve definitely learned to control my mind and stuff like that and just kind of read keys and watch my person and watch my back.”

Through fives games, Sterling has 30 tackles, which is fourth-best on the team, and four of those tackles have been for a loss of yardage.

“I think I’ve done my job well,” Sterling said.

“I’ve moved up and was given an opportunity and I think I’m making the most of it so far. I’m going to try to continue to do that to the best of my ability.”
