Birds and Limes can no longer fly on campus.

Two months after the electric rental scooters’ controversial debut, Oklahoma State University released a statement announcing a ban on motorized rental scooters within the campus area.

OSU Communications sent an email Monday announcing the suspension, and several crews were sent out to impound scooters left on campus after the 5 p.m. deadline.

The email cited “safety concerns and permitting issues” as reasoning for the suspension. Representatives of the university notified scooter rental companies that they must remove their vehicles from the OSU-Stillwater campus by 5 p.m. Monday, according to the release.

Carrie Hulsey-Greene, OSU’s public information officer, said the safety concerns are related to the issues with how electric scooters are parked.

“The safety concerns are that people are leaving (scooters) on the sidewalk and impeding people’s travel on the sidewalk,” Hulsey-Greene said.

“They are leaving them on the front door of the building and keeping people from being able to access buildings. Those are the safety concerns.”

She said there is a police report regarding a collision between a car and a Bird scooter on Sept. 26.

ers impounded after the 5 p.m. deadline Monday, Hulsey-Greene said.

She explained that students are welcome to bring their motorized scooters to campus area as long as they adhere the rules, but no rental scooters are allowed. “(As long as) they follow what we have in place or where they need to be parked or how it needs to be placed on campus, that is fine,” Hulsey-Greene said.

The campuswide ban of scooters doesn’t mean the end of Bird and Lime in Stillwater. Bird has responded to the announcement, putting a red zone covering the campus on the map on the application. Patrons can ride the scooters to the campus vicinity, but scooters will shut down as soon as they reach the red zone on the map.

A lot of scooters will line the edge of the campus area, creating possible sidewalk problems for the city. Paul Bostick, the City of Stillwater code enforcement supervisor, said he will have to wait to determine if actions are needed.

“We don’t know what to do yet because there haven’t been any problems,” Bostick said. “We will have to wait and see how they are leaving the scooters on the edge of campus. If it reaches a point, then we will have to do something.”

rived in Stillwater, with 69 sitting in the impound lot.

Code enforcement officers are instructed to find and pick up violated scooters on campus and send them to the impound lot with a $5 fine per day for every scooter held there.

Most of the violations involve chargers, especially in the morning when they set the scooters out and often block sidewalks and entrances to buildings, Bostick said.

Bostick said some scooters were dropped off in handicap access areas and block wheelchair ramps, and others are near street lights in the way of the buttons people push at crosswalks.

Bird released an email at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday to students who registered their Bird accounts with their school emails.

Bird’s message was an attempt to “Save Bird at Oklahoma State.”

“Campus officials have banned the use of Bird at OSU — but you can help reverse their decision by sending a message in support of Bird,” the email said.

It provided a link to a form with a prewritten email to send to OSU officials Lee Bird, vice president of student affairs; John Mark Day, director of leadership and campus life; and Steve Spradling, director of parking and transportation services.

The O’Colly has reached out via phone to the email recipients Lee Bird, Day and Spradling about the petition but had

received no response as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Those who follow the link also have the option to receive emails and texts about the campaign to keep Bird on campus.

The O’Colly reached out to representatives from Bird and Lime via phone and email for comments, but had received no response as of 5 p.m.

Hulsey-Greene said the companies are welcomed to bring the scooters back to campus as long as they can reach a deal with OSU. “The university is willing to work with the companies,” Hulsey-Greene said. “But right now, they have been banned on campus. Right now, it is indefinitely. I can’t tell you what will happen six months from now or a year from now.”

Bird and Lime scooters have been a fixture on Oklahoma State University’s campus since September, but to the dismay of many students, OSU Communications announced the suspension of the motorized scooters Monday.

Before the ban, OSU officials asked students to use their best judgment when deciding whether to ride these scooters on city sidewalks and streets.

Officials were concerned because the company placed motorized scooters in areas around Stillwater without notice to the city.

When motorized scoot-

ers were allowed on campus, riders had to follow the same regulations as cyclists and drivers.

Students had to refrain from leaving scooters in walkways and roadways to avoid creating a tripping hazard or blockage of buildings.

Some students were unhappy with the ban, organizing petitions and posting on social media to protest OSU’s decision.

Jadan Terrazas, an agribusiness prelaw sophomore, started a petition on Change.org to “Save the scooters.”

Change.org is a popular petition management website that allows people to use their email accounts, names and zip codes to sign petitions other

users create. The petition had gained about 6,000 signatures as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

“I don’t think that the university realized how many people this was going to affect,” Terrazas said. “The only way to show them that with a numerical value was the petition. There’s nothing in university code that says you can petition to get a rule changed. So, the petition is purely a representation of how many people this is affecting and how many people want it reversed.”

Terrazas said he is meeting with Joe Weaver, OSU’s vice president of administration and finance, Wednesday morning to discuss the scooter suspension.

“Hopefully we can get something out of our meeting tomorrow,” Terrazas said. “If not, we may have to extend our efforts. I’m not sure what that

would look like at this point.

Hopefully we don’t have to do that. I’d rather just have the meeting tomorrow be productive, and hopefully wrap things up before fall break. That would be ideal. Then when we get back from break, it could go back to normal.”

Jonathan McKee, a mechanical and aerospace engineering junior, said the ban was an extreme response to an easy fix.

“The best solution isn’t banning them but educating the people riding them,” McKee said.

McKee said OSU’s policy on bike lanes is posted for the public, so people have no excuse to not know the laws to follow.

“If you follow the rules that are on there, accidents don’t happen,” McKee said.
