Vases full of white roses, lilies and chrysanthemums filled the floor of the dining room, but no amount of flowers could fill the empty space Caleb Holt left behind.

Holt died Oct. 29 after he crashed his 2012 GMC Sierra pickup into a Stillwater home in the 600 block of South Jefferson Street.

Officers learned during the preliminary investigation that “Holt had allegedly consumed psychedelic mushrooms prior to the crash and had an adverse reaction to the mushrooms,” according to a Stillwater Police Department media release.

Holt, 20, was born in McAlester, where he attended grade school before moving to Hartshorne in seventh grade. Holt graduated from Hartshorne High School in 2015 and went on to attend Eastern Oklahoma State College and Oklahoma State University.

Caleb’s father, Charles, has walked around the flowers in his living room for a week. He said Holt lived life with a hard-headed but respectful demeanor.

From an early age, Caleb’s carefree attitude shined.

“He was a free spirit,” Pam Russell, Caleb’s mother, said. “He didn’t worry. That just wasn’t like him. He wanted to squeeze as much out of life as he could every single day.”

Along with his interest in forming friendships, Caleb loved animals, especially his dog, Boo. Holt studied animal science at OSU and spent his summers working on his family’s ranches building fences, baling hay and working with animals.

When Caleb was younger, Pam and Jimmy Russell, Caleb’s stepfather, owned a horse that was slow to warm up to people except for Caleb.

“Anytime that Jimmy would try to ride the horse, it wouldn’t stand still for anyone to get on him,” Pam said. “When Caleb would go to get on him, though, he would literally grab the leathers and climb up him, and that horse would stay still and never move, but if anyone else tried to ride him, that horse was a jerk.

Caleb just had this calming presence.”

Pam held back tears as she talked about how she’s been dealing with the loss of her son.

“Even in one single day, I can get up and think ‘OK, I’m going to make it today,’” Pam said. “‘This is going to be OK. I can do this.’ And then something can just snap, and I can just feel so hopeless.

“Then I just think, ‘Caleb wouldn’t want you to be like this, so you’re not going to be, first off, and second, you have a 12-year-old son that you have to get to 18 and a daughter that is going through the same stuff. You don’t have a choice.’”

Caleb’s happy-go-lucky nature and unwavering love for others allowed him to impact so many people that something good has to come out of his death, Pam said.

Along with the handwritten letter from Seales, Charles found comfort in the words of one of his friends while visiting Caleb’s gravesite.

“A buddy of mine summed it up best for me, and it really didn’t hit me until later,” Charles said. “He said ‘That boy was 20 years old, and I hope I have half as many good things said about me at my funeral.’ That gave me a lot of peace.”

Caleb was the one his family leaned on for support, encouragement and laughter, but now he’s gone, and his family is still learning how to deal with the void.

“When you throw a rock in the water, you never know how far the ripples are going to go,” Mandi said.

“I feel like Caleb was that rock. He’s touched so many people. He’s so much more than the ‘Stillwater man on mushrooms.’ That smile, those blue eyes. It’s just amazing how many lives he touched.”

Caleb’s death blindsided his family. Caleb was always a straight-shooter and was comfortable in his own skin, Pam said.

After the police released their report about Caleb’s accident, Charles and Mandi began researching psychedelic mushrooms because they had little knowledge of the effects.

A simple Google search of “psychedelic mushrooms” displays pages upon pages of articles and studies about the benefits of psychedelic mushrooms and how to get them. Headlines include “Magic mushrooms are the safest recreational drug, study says” and “Magic mushrooms expand the mind by dampening brain activity.”

But Caleb’s accident has revealed there is a different, darker side to mushrooms.

“If nothing else, we want to get that out there,” Mandi said. “It’s not as easy or good as these sites make it out to be. It is a gateway, just like marijuana. It’s unbelievable some of the stuff they say on there. ‘It’s OK. It’ll give you better thoughts and perspectives.’ No, it’s not.

“It’s not OK at all. It was just so hard to swallow because we were so shocked by it.”

In the wake of Caleb’s death, his family has decided to focus on the positives and how Caleb’s life can inspire others to be better people.

Caleb’s family is working on setting up a scholarship fund in memory of him. The fund will award a deserving OSU student for excellence in academics and in character.

“It’s not often you meet someone as genuine as Caleb,” Seales said. “I don’t wish him to be judged by the manner of his passing but by the impact he left on lives that he didn’t even know he was leaving.”

In the long line of contract disagreements between Netflix and FOX, the insanely popular FX hit “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” will be removed from Netflix in almost a month.

FOX and Netflix have been slowly parting ways for years now, beginning with “Family Guy” and “The XFiles,” then removing “Bob’s Burgers” recently.

Over the summer, the first four seasons of “Futurama,” which FOX broadcast, fell victim to an expiring contract. Now “Sunny” is gone, and it looks like it won’t be coming back soon.

This current trend of

With the explosion of subscribers in the last two years, Netflix has continued to pour money into original Netflix shows, movies, and even game shows.

Review: Sam Smith’s “The Thrill of it All” Mag gie Sn yder S taff Repo rter @ o c olly

Sam Smith has returned with another soulful, emotional and bluestoned album called “The Thrill of It All.” After winning four Grammy’s in 2015 and winning an Academy Award for his theme song for James Bond in 2016, many fans noticed his absence during 2017. Thankfully, Sam Smith has given the world another heartfelt and passionate album about heartbreak and love.

The most popular song and first single of the album is called “Too

Good at Goodbyes.” This song describes relationships that you want to stay in, but you know it’s bad for you so it’s best if you leave.

Smith starts off the song “Burning” acapella, providing a sad tone that follows through the rest of the song. He lost someone that he was in a serious and loving relationship with, and he describes himself as burning since he was left. Toward the end of the song, he sings with a church choir, providing a chilling and powerful sound. Once again, Smith’s voice carries the song to a whole other level of emotion.

Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith sparked some speculation while talking to media Tuesday.

When asked about a potential starting lineup, Smith said he was still unsure about 184 pounds.

“I’m still deciding what I want to do,” Smith said.

“I’m about half pissed off at who I thought was starting there. I’ll just say, you could see a true freshman wres-

tling for us on Saturday.”

Bear Hughes, from Coweta, is the only freshman listed on the Cowboys’ roster at 184 pounds.

Keegan Moore, a redshirt freshman, was predicted to start at the weight. Andrew Marsden is also listed at 184 pounds, as well as 197, but was projected to start at 197 pounds in replace of an injured Preston Weigel. Those are the only 184 pounders listed on OSU’s roster.
