Malcolm Rodriguez couldn’t recall another time when he returned an interception for a winning touchdown.

Not in a youth game.

Not in high school. Not at Oklahoma State, where he had zero interceptions before playing at Iowa State during the past weekend.

That didn’t matter in Ames. Refusing to allow a fourth-quarter collapse, Rodriguez grabbed his first winning pick six when the Cowboys and

Cyclones were tied at 27.

Two days after OSU’s 34-27 victory, Rodriguez, a junior linebacker and former safety from Wagoner, was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.

The energy he sparked in the defense has carried into this week as the Cowboys prepare to take on TCU. “We were all pumped and everything, and so coming into practice, we’re still confident,” Rodriguez said. “We’ve just got to come out and communicate with each other.”

Like OSU, TCU (4-3, 2-2) revitalized itself with a victory against a ranked team after a pair of conference losses.

The Horned Frogs stunned then-No. 15 Texas 37-27 during the past Saturday, a day packed with Big 12 upsets.

Rodriguez drew some comparisons between TCU quarterback Max Duggan and ISU signalcaller Brock Purdy. “(Duggan is) very scrappy,” Rodriguez said. “…He likes to use his feet a lot, scrambles.

He can run. He’s pretty fast, and he can make big throws.”

Rodriguez doesn’t shy away from the challenge of facing a dangerous quarterback. He said his experience at safety helped him read Purdy to make the game-changing interception, starting the Cowboys’ pick parade at Jack Trice Stadium.

Rodriguez switched from safety to linebacker this year to fill in for injured Cowboys, particularly senior Calvin Bundage, a former starter who has dealt with a back strain.

Ogbongbemiga are OSU’s starting linebackers, but Kevin Henry and Devin Harper have provided depth since returning from injuries.

Philip Redwine-Bryant, a redshirt senior and former walk-on, also sometimes rotates in at linebacker.

“Those guys, they’ve backed us up no matter what,” Rodriguez said.

“And we give them confidence, they give us confidence, so it’s just love all around the room.”

Rodriguez leads the linebacker corps — and the defense — with 66 tackles, 38 of which are

solo stops.

“I haven’t seen many people break Malcolm’s tackles,” said Braydon Johnson, a redshirt sophomore wide receiver.

“He’ll get a person down in space no matter who it is.”

With the opportunity to keep up the Cowboys’ newfound momentum, Rodriguez continues to fine-tune his linebacker skills.

“There is always room to improve and learn from coaches,” Rodriguez said. “They always say, ‘Do this little thing; every little thing counts.’”

Braydon Johnson used to struggle, a lot.

Through his freshman season, which he redshirted, and into his redshirt freshman season, Johnson didn’t know if he’d be good enough to be a member of the Oklahoma State football team.

“When he came in here his first year and a half, the culture here was foreign to him,” coach Mike Gundy said. “From a standpoint, he didn’t know if he wanted to do it: accountability,

structure, discipline, hard work.”

One of the biggest things Gundy said Johnson used to lack: confidence.

Gundy knew Johnson wasn’t ready last year, and that’s why the redshirt sophomore only had two receptions for seven yards all of last season.

After the season, Johnson wanted more. He started to work harder than he ever had in his career to become a better player.

“It’s been a grind really,” Johnson said. “To be honest, it’s just keeping my head straight and just coming out every day to

work.”

While the physicality of football is just as hard, Johnson said the hardest part was the mental aspect.

“Everybody is here physically when you get to this level, but it’s just the mental aspect of it,” Johnson said. “Just being able to stay focused and just come out even when you having a bad day being able to push through it and keep working every day.”

The progression of Johnson’s game from when he stepped into Stillwater as a freshman to now is evident.

Johnson only has 10

receptions this season but has the third-most receiving yards on the team with 221. He’s only 11 yards behind Dillon Stoner for second.

Last week in the Cowboys’ victory against Iowa State, Johnson scored off a 50-yard wide receiver screen.

Similar to running back Chuba Hubbard, when Johnson finds a gap in the defense, he exposes it and dashes off in a footrace.

Speaking of Hubbard, he and Johnson, who Gundy has called one of the fastest players on the team, had a race of their

own.

Johnson won the first and Chuba won the second, according to Johnson.

That shows the type of speed Johnson possesses if he can go toe-to-toe with the nation’s best running back.

Johnson’s future in OSU’s offense is uncertain.

Tylan Wallace is undoubtedly the Cowboys’ No. 1 receiver this season.

Stoner makes a great case for second-best, but Johnson could quickly insert himself into the conversation if he’s given the chance.

He’s averaging 22.1 yards per reception, which is by far more than Wallace and Stoner.

Few people knew the name Braydon Johnson a year ago. But from the work he’s put in to better his game, Gundy calls Johnson a success story.

“He’s turning the corner now,” Gundy said. “He has a lot of ability, and he is just now starting to obtain the most important thing for a player which is called confidence. He believes in himself now and you’re starting to see the results.”

If there’s any game where Spencer Sanders needs to step up, it’s this one.

But it’s also the freshman quarterback’s toughest test of his career.

Hot off a win at Iowa State, which snapped the Oklahoma State football team’s twogame losing streak, the Cowboys have regained some momentum. TCU head coach Gary Patterson and the Horned Frogs will try to stop the Cowboys in their tracks Saturday, though.

And they’ve got more than a fair shot at that with their personnel and top defensive mind at

the helm. “(Gary Patterson and I) know each other very well, there’s no secret there,” coach Mike Gundy said. “He’s gone back to what he believes in. Four down linemen, and he wants his corners to play man.

When it comes to being a defensive coach he’s as good as anybody in the country.”

The marquee matchup of the day will be the Cowboys rushing attack against TCU’s run defense.

Chuba Hubbard tops the NCAA leaderboard in rushing, leading the Cowboys to be tied for the 5th best running game in the nation.

running game struggles more than usual, Sanders will need to pick up the slack.

After a couple of weeks of turnoverprone football, Sanders recovered a bit against the Cyclones. He threw for 249 yards and had only one turnover. But nearly half of them came off of two simple screen passes his targets took the distance.

The most impressive one was from Tylan Wallace, who turned what should’ve just been a few yards to get a first down into a 71-yard highlight for the ages.

TCU is very talented in the back end as well, and its corners play more press coverage than any team the Cowboys have seen so far. It

makes the screen game more vulnerable to being blown up.

Sanders will have to prove he can be an effective downfield passer while still limiting turnovers to give the Cowboys a better chance in this game. That’s what OSU needs from him to prove he’s the quarterback of the future.

This is Sanders’ chance to show that he can shine under the pressure of a top defense.

“We’re gonna have to live up to the challenge,” Gundy said. “We’ll have to have a really solid plan, and they’re gonna win some battles. When you play against guys that are good players, they’re gonna make a few plays.”

Speaking broken Spanish and painting broken hearts: My experience on the border Kay la D un n

U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently announced that 475,000 migrant families have been arrested at the southern border this past year.

This is a steep 342 percent increase since the 2018 fiscal year.

It can be easy for the countless news stories rolling off the pages of papers around the country about the “border crisis” to overstimulate you, especially when reading from the comfort of one’s home thousands of miles away. This summer, however, the debate hit home after I travelled 1,015 miles from Stillwater to Tucson, Arizona and volunteered at Casa Alitas, a catholic monastery turned migrant shelter.

For nearly two months, I translated Spanish and taught art classes at the monastery. Prior to volunteering, I had read the stories of migrants fleeing to the U.S. border and seen the pictures of brown faces against silver chain-link fences in detention camps. But meeting these people face-to-face, breaking bread with them, painting with their 5-year-olds and listening to their stories was

nothing like reading the news.

Casa Alitas houses migrant families that sought asylum in the U.S. and were subsequently dropped off on the streets of Arizona

by ICE. To seek asylum, a person must be facing extreme persecution in their home country; they must be fearful that staying would result in their deaths.

After passing credible fear interviews and proving they have family in the U.S. (among other things), the families are left to traverse the U.S. to their destination (a court hearing that sends the majority of migrant families back to their home countries).

Volunteering at Casa Alitas, I found myself in the art therapy room as an art teacher.

Each morning, I’d arrive at Casa Alitas wearing bumblebee antennas, hoping to seem approachable to the stray 3-yearold wandering the halls, and teach art.

Together, we would trace their favorite cartoon characters on calca (tracing paper), construct trains out of cardboard boxes and color scenes of their homelands.

We spoke a mix of Spanish and English and painted our bro-

One morning, I spent the entirety of the therapy art class rolling around on the floor with two sisters, aged 3 and 6, from Honduras. We laughed, talked about princesses and chased each other around the room; they were just children.

Later in the afternoon, after the girls had left for lunch, their mother shared the heart-wrenching story of how they came to be in Arizona.

I wept as she spoke.

Those sweet girls may just be children, but they had experienced more pain than I will

undoubtedly ever face.

Volunteering, speaking Spanish, painting murals and eating dinner with these families gave “the migrant crisis” tangible weight; I got to know these people.

Offering three meals a day, English classes and help with purchasing plane or bus tickets to their destination, Casa Alitas runs with the help of volunteers.

We never knew when a group would arrive, bringing anywhere up to 75 more mouths to feed, so we were always ready.

I helped where I could and served where needed. One

day in particular, the program coordinator, Valarie, invited me south of the border to Casa Alitas’ sister shelter, La Roca.

“Shelter” proved to be a generous word for a slab of concrete partially covered by a tin roof and lacking walls in most places. For a few hours, I worked with the congregation of kids, covered in sweat and smiles, to distract from the months they had been waiting on this slab of concrete to enter the Land of the Free.

It is easy to become numb to appalling news when you are not directly facing the

repercussions.

But I implore you to not continue to exist in oblivion.

I implore you to look the issue directly in its face because the people currently locked in cages in the Land of the Free are human beings. They are sisters and mothers, sons and fathers.

People who have often faced tremendous pain and persecution.

As citizens in one of the most powerful countries in the world, we cannot feign helplessness and live in apathy. We must value justice strive toward efficacy.

The Student Government Association Senate elected a new SGA Supreme Court Justice in their final October meeting.

Payton Dougherty, an SGA Senator for the College of Arts & Sciences, was approved in a 44-0 decision by the SGA Senate.

Dougherty is a political science and philosophy double major with a minor in law and legal studies. She said she already has plans for what she wants to do with her new position.

“Well, I’m hoping that we can add a moot court competition to the Supreme Court in the future,” Dougherty said.

“Which I know some other people are hoping to do and since I’m in a moot court competition now, I’d love to be a justice for that.”

When the Senate meeting came back from recess, Senator Dougherty was sworn in as an SGA Supreme Court Justice.

Noah Murphey, the Vice Chair of the SGA Senate, said Dougherty’s appointment helps the organization greatly after a recent graduating class left only two justices remaining.

“The SGA president opened up applications to all students around the campus who qualified, those qualifications being that they were not a first semester freshman

and that they had above a 2.0 GPA on campus,” Murphey said. “She then reviewed the applications with her Chief of Staff, and they chose applicants who seemed to have the best fit. Senator Dougherty seemed to be one of the ones that had a very good fit for the Supreme Court and so she was then appointed to the supreme court through an approval process through the internal affairs committee and then approval by the senate as a whole.”

After Dougherty’s swearing in, the meeting turned to reports from organization executives and senate members. During this time, a focus group study about Kerr-Drummond dining hall was addressed. According to the study, students focused on replacing the 20-Something convenience store with a dedicated grocery store and requested more name-brand dining options to draw traffic from the Union.

Three new organizations were recognized, and five organizations were approved for budget co-sponsoring from the senate. These budget approvals were all for minority focused organizations. The budgets were approved to help fund events and outreach programs by each organization.

The organizations that were co-sponsored are the Minority Women’s Association, the Saudi Student Association, the Almighty S, the African

Student Organization and the Latino Business Student Association. The organizations that were registered for SGA were the Astronomy and Astrophysics Club, the OSU Fly Fishing Organization and the Nazarene Student Ministry.

“The most common things that we do for those groups is we’ll help them put on events and kind of outreach to different students in an effort to make sure that those groups can provide a good experience for their students,” said Marcus Heald, the Senate Chairman for SGA. “Also, part of that is we get recognized for that and people can kind of see what we’re doing for those organizations.”

The issue of constitutional open carry being legalized in November was addressed and the senate was informed that the university will uphold their ban on all firearms.

The shooting scare from Oct. 15 was also addressed. It was decided that while the situation proved to be a false alarm, the response from authorities showed the university’s preparedness for such a threat.

The meeting was adjourned after about one hour and 20 minutes.

With the approval of several budget adjustments, the recognition of new organizations and the appointment of a new justice, Noah Murphey said it was an overall productive meeting.

Goo Goo Dolls, with special guest The Unlikely Candidates, gave an energetic performance Tuesday night at The Brady Theater in Tulsa as part of their Miracle Pill Tour.

The cold wind and rain did not stop a line from forming to see the awardwinning rock band. Over 2,000 longtime and newer fans, of all ages, filled the theater.

In response to the band coming to Tulsa, one fan online said “we saw them in Enid and they were awesome.”

Goo Goo Dolls, famous for hits such as “Name” and “Slide,” arrived in Tulsa to promote their new album, “The Miracle Pill.”

First, The Unlikely Candidates, an indie rock band originating from Texas, took the stage. The group fueled the venue with energy immediately. Lead singer Kyle Morris echoed the beautifully powerful vocals of Brandon Urie and Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds with the stage presence of Mick Jagger.

Yet, there was an original style and vibe to the whole band.

Soon after, they did their final number. The Goo Goo dolls arrived on stage and launched into a mix of classic hits and newer material. The band moved from high energy to thoughtful

tunes, maintaining an effortless style throughout.

Front man John Rzeznik and bassist/vocalist Robby Takac always engaged with the audience.

He never hesitated to banter with the audience between songs. At one point, Rzeznik talked Oklahoma history and the definition of the word “Sooner,” which drew laughter from the crowd.

The playful and welcoming tone continued until the end.

Goo Goo Dolls covered past hits including “Sympathy” and “So Alive.” The lineup also featured “Iris,” which was on the “City of Angels Soundtrack” in 1998. They worked in equally solid tracks from their new album. Each song was full of experience and a warmth, with Rzeznik voice as smooth as it was when their album “A Boy Named Goo” dropped in the 90s. The show was a reminder of how strong the band has continued to be over the last three decades.

Takac’s vocals were also featured on a few songs.

There were moments his voice was reminiscent of legendary singer Steve Perry, formerly of the band Journey. During the entire show, he exuded a wild confidence, bouncing around the stage with no shoes on. His personality and sound brought a harmonious balance to the concert.

One peculiar moment

occurred when Rzeznik mentioned all of the band members except Takac.

The two created the band and have been sharing their universal rock music for the past 30 years. So it was an odd moment that spawned confused looks from the crowd as Takac shrugged and continued playing.

Otherwise, the event was a friendly retreat from winter’s arrival, complete with confetti cannons, black balloons and large falling capsules on the screen behind the band.

The Unlikely Candidates rounded out the experience by greeting fans in the lobby. They signed merchandise and took photos with the same approachability they delivered on stage. It was a nice finish.

Goo Goo Dolls, comprised of Rzeznik and Takac, formed in 1985.

Since then, they have been nominated for multiple Grammy’s, appeared on television in shows such as “Charmed” and involved themselves with charity work.

“Miracle Pill” is the band’s 12th album. Their last album, “Boxes”, featured their hit single “So Alive” and came out in 2016.

The tour is scheduled to continue until Dec. 5 when the band will play their final show in Arizona with Season 16 American Idol winner, Maddie Poppe.

“I guess it started the day after I graduated high school. I had graduation, and I’d planned on going to the Muskogee Renaissance Fair with one of my friends. Well, I got back from my high school’s after-graduation party at five in the morning, crashed on my couch, and got woken up at nine am by the same friend who was calling me, asking if I still wanted to go to the Fair and I’m like, ‘Yes! Let’s go!’

While I was at the Fair, I found that they were selling plague [doctor] masks. They also had some that were much more affordable. I thought I’d get one.

Then, college rolled around. I found out that some of my other friends had gone to Ren Fairs and done things like that. I didn’t do it freshman year for Halloween but then sophomore year, I did. One of my friends said he’d found a coat that screamed ‘me.’ I added it on so I’ve just been slowly tinkering with it. I’ve got the coat from him, winter balaclavas that my uncle gave to me, a hat that I wore for years and the robe that my grandma made out of an old Halloween costume of hers. It’s one of those costumes that started somewhere and gradually have been evolving as things go. A lot of pieces are behind that, like little stories.”
