For Teklyn JacksonDavis, her grandmother’s legacy means everything.

Teklyn’s grandmother, Nancy Randolph Davis, was the first AfricanAmerican student to attend then-Oklahoma A&M College.

Teklyn is a first-year graduate student in OSU’s speech pathology program, and she said coming to Stillwater felt natural because of the legacy her grandmother built.

Nancy Randolph Davis enrolled during the summer of 1949 while teaching at Dungee High School in Spencer.

She earned a master’s degree in 1952, breaking through barriers to pursue higher education.

On Thursday, a crowd of many members of Davis’ family, several OSU students and officials and Davis’ former students from her time as a high school teacher, gathered in front of the College of Human Science for an unveiling ceremony of a lifesize sculpture of Nancy Randolph Davis.

“It’s just amazing,” Teklyn said. “It means a lot for me to be able to go here and share in this experience... (My family) is super humble, and they want to really see people benefit from everything my grand-

The bronze statue, which artist Jane DeDecker sculpted, depicts a young student in graduation regalia with excited eyes looking on toward a promising future.

OSU President Burns Hargis, Stephan Wilson, dean of OSU’s College of Human Sciences, Calvin Davis, son of Nancy Randolph Davis, Nancy Lynn Davis, daughter of Nancy Randolph Davis and Teklyn Jackson-Davis all helped unveil the statue.

Moments after the unveiling, Hargis hugged the statue.

“This is just the second full-life sculpture of a human being on this campus,” Hargis said. “The other one of

course is Henry Bennett, former president for almost 30 years here.

Now we have Nancy Randolph Davis. I think that’s a very important statement to make about Oklahoma State and our value of people like Nancy. I was very pleased to know her.

She was a very gracious, lovely lady. I think this says a lot about our values at Oklahoma State University, and you couldn’t get better values than what Nancy had.”

Calvin Davis thanked the several OSU officials in attendance and thanked the university for all the honors that his mother has been awarded. These include the Distinguished Alumnus Award, the namesake of Davis Hall on OSU’s campus and the Enhancement of Human Lives Award from the OSU College of Human OCOLLY.COM

Oklahoma also recognized Davis in 2018 and named a three-mile stretch of Interstate 35 west of Stillwater the Nancy Randolph Davis Memorial Highway. She died in 2015 at the age of 88.

Calvin Davis said the sculpture is not a tribute to his mother alone, but is a testament to what OSU represents.

“This tribute is not just a tribute to my mother … but to the uniqueness of OSU,” Calvin Davis said. “It’s an attestation to the administration that said, ‘We don’t have to endure litigation … massive protests.’ They did the right thing. The students did the right thing by saying, ‘Don’t sit in the hallway or the back. Come inside the classroom.’ That is the MONDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2019

Nancy Randolph Davis’ determination broke barriers and opened doors for diversity and inclusion.

Jason F. Kirksey, OSU’s vice president for institutional diversity and chief diversity officer, said Davis was a trailblazer and her commitment to education was undaunted.

“This sculpture represents an incredibly powerful and profound moment for this institution,” Kirksey said. “This is a commitment to inclusion that is unwavering.”

Jasmine Marks, a nutritional sciences senior with a pre-med option, embodies the legacy Davis created for students like her. Marks spoke before the unveiling ceremony about the

impact Davis has had on OSU. “I feel honored and humbled to stand before you today to express words on behalf of pioneer Nancy Randolph Davis,” Marks said.

“Miss Davis paved the way for students here at Oklahoma State who look like me. Her story speaks volumes to her character. A woman of strength, courage and perseverance… I hope that the generations of students to come can learn from the much respected and admirable Nancy Randolph Davis.”

As the basketball bounced off the backboard, fans surrounding Eddie Sutton Court dejectedly sighed.

If they followed Oklahoma State tradition, they couldn’t sit.

The Kansas State men’s basketball team clobbered the Cowboys 75-57 on Saturday evening in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Scoring droughts plagued OSU (9-12 overall, 2-6 Big 12) in its fourth straight conference loss.

When the second half started, Cowboy fans stood, as usual. During each half, they don’t sit until OSU scores.

Loyal supporters waited six minutes and one second.

K-State held a 43-27 lead at halftime. Dean Wade, the Wildcats’ starting senior forward, extended that advantage when he hit a 3-point jumper 1:33 into the second half.

Wade, who led K-State with 24 points and went 9-for-9 from the field, was the Wildcats’ lone scorer while OSU endured a second-half drought.

Wade contributed six points to put K-State up 49-27. As the sea of orange expectantly waited, OSU had no answer.

Thomas Dziagwa, a Cowboy junior guard, said OSU had good shots but couldn’t make them.

“A team like (K-State), they don’t really beat themselves,” Dziagwa said. “(If) you get good shots, you’ve gotta knock ‘em down.”

Fans briefly had a chance to sit during the under-16 media timeout.

When the shot clock started again, the Cowboys’ offensive lull continued.

Pockets of standing fans were peppered among others who had retired to their vivid orange chairs.

Although Cameron McGriff, an OSU junior forward, attempted a layup, his shot hit the backboard and missed the net.

Yor Anei made the play that let them rest their feet.

Anei, a freshman starting forward, grabbed the offensive rebound and dunked with 13:59 left. The relieved crowd cheered, but Wade squashed the energy with another 3-pointer.

The Cowboys’ second-half

scoreless stretch extended their first-half struggles. After junior guard Lindy Waters III made a layup with 3:17 left until halftime, they didn’t score until Anei’s second-half dunk.

OSU’s drought lasted 9:18, allowing K-State to go on a 19-0 run.

The Cowboys narrowly avoided their worst home loss.

OSU’s biggest home defeat was an 80-47 game against Kansas on Feb. 19, 1966.

The Wildcats led 69-35 with 6:18 left Saturday. That score would have erased the Cowboys’ previous record for largest home losing margin, but they launched a late rally.

As K-State coach Bruce Weber benched starters, OSU went on a 22-6 run to close the game.

Mike Boynton, OSU’s coach, said he thought that happened so the Cowboys could preserve their pride.

“We were being embarrassed on our home court,” Boynton said. “No one felt good about that, so our message was just keep competing.”

OSU had a 12-7 lead with 14:39 left in the first half but quickly succumbed to the Wildcats’ defensive pressure.

K-State held Waters III, a typically prolific scorer, to five first-half points.

The Wildcats (16-5, 6-2) undauntedly faced the Cowboys’ defensive formations, whether they played man or 1-3-1 zone.

Barry Brown Jr., a K-State starting junior guard who finished with 18 points, said

he and his teammates were aware OSU wouldn’t stick to one scheme.

“We had practiced that,” Brown Jr. said. “We were prepared for all of them.”

Before Big 12 play started, Boynton picked K-State to finish first in the conference. The Wildcats are tied with Baylor at the top of the Big 12, and Boynton stuck to his choice after OSU’s loss.

“It shows you just their level of maturity, their level of commitment to their game plan,” Boynton said. “And the fact that, again, they’ve learned how to handle these moments.”

Review: ’Miss Bala’ offers action-packed heroine tale

“Miss Bala” wraps viewers into a suspenseful, friendship-driven motion picture.

The film is a remake of a 2011 Hispanic movie of the same title. Gloria (Gina Rodriguez) is a Hollywood makeup artist that returns home to Tijuana, Mexico to help her friend Suzu (Cristina Rodlo) in the Miss Baja beauty pageant.

The graphics and natural sound were epic to say the least. The explosions were huge and vibrant. The gun shot vibrations could be felt, and the camera angles were well thought out, giving you the ultimate action-filled experience.

The soundtrack was full of songs that added to the suspense. The eeriness and the slow build in music was a nice touch. The entire film from start to finish was put together in a creative and exciting way.

Sometimes remakes can lose the message or not have the same effect

on people as the original, but this isn’t the case. The 2019 “Miss Bala” kept with the Mexican roots and portrays the scenes in a more graphic and lively way that brings the film to life.

The movie combines intense and violent scenes with a love-driven mission in a combination that works. If you’re looking for a movie that will get your heart pumping and leave you feeling satisfied, then look no further than “Miss Bala.”
