As Oklahoma State begins its 99th homecoming celebration, Greek students are finishing up another season of pomping.

The first OSU homecoming was in 1913 as part of the Harvest Carnival, but the first official homecoming was not held until 1920 where alumni returned and watched as the then Oklahoma A&M, played Texas A&M. As homecoming progressed, “pomping” was born.

Pomping is a tradition that students in Greek Life participate in each year. The action of pomping consists of student stuffing tissue paper through squares in a panel of chicken wire to create an image.

Brady Schneider, a freshman member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity, has not yet experienced homecoming and is excited to see everything come together.

“Before pomping started I was told that it was going to be pretty terrible,” Schneider said. “I don’t think it’s as bad as people made it out to sound. I’ve enjoyed getting to meet the sorority we are paired with and get to know the older members better.”

Then, it spread to the residential halls and the rest of Greek row. By the 1950s, the homecoming decks became more popular and the tradition grew into what we have today.

Carson Trummel, a junior member of Sigma Chi fraternity, said that pomping is a great bonding experience.

“I think it’s a really cool tradition that OSU has and can be a great experience to be able to meet new friends,” Trummel said.

Kailey Florida, a senior member of Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, said that seeing the final product and knowing that she was able to take part in such a unique event is what makes it so amazing.

“It’s so fun trying to figure out exactly what I am pomping because they don’t tell us until the end,” Florida said.

The displays are always complete by the time Walkaround begins the night before the Homecoming game.

Alex Reynolds, a sophomore member of Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity, is a director this year. He is in charge of building a moving part.

“This year is a lot different because I am a director,” Reynolds said. “I have an inside look at homecoming.

Thousands of alumni come back for “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration” each year.

Weston Jordan, a senior member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity, looks forward to Walkaround not just for the displays, but to also see alumni.

“My favorite part of homecoming is walkaround because I like seeing the other screens and how well the other houses did,” Jordan said. “It is amazing to see how big and detailed the decks are and to have the

alumni come back and see the finished product.”

Fraternities and sororities start planning for homecoming in January, preparing themes for house decorations.

The entire process spans from January to Walkaround, a nearly 11 month process.

Meredith James, a junior member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority expressed pride in the final product.

“I enjoy hearing the comments that the community make as they see the decorations,” James said.

Texas, Kansas State and Texas Tech kept OSU’s defensive line at bay. They will see great offenses such as Oklahoma and Iowa State later in the season. It is a work in progress right now. Come back in two years and with the players OSU has on the line, it could be a different story. But right now, it’s not looking good.

The Oklahoma State football team has had more ups than downs this season. But a loss to Texas Tech two weeks ago knocked the Cowboys out of the AP top 25 rankings.

As OSU moves into the second half of the season with its homecoming game against Baylor, here is a report card of the Cowboys play so far.

Special Teams: A

Quarterbacks: B For a freshman quarterback, Sanders has had an above-average season. His grade could’ve been a B+ or even an A- had he not thrown three interceptions and fumbled the ball twice against Texas Tech. Sanders shined, mostly, in OSU’s easy nonconference games.

While there were hiccups against Texas, he showed great promise against the Longhorns and Kansas State.

The next two games will determine what the rest of the season will be like for Spencer Sanders. Will he help the Cowboys rise up against Baylor and Iowa State or fall like so many Mike Gundy-led OSU teams have before against those two?

Chuba Hubbard is one of the best running backs in the country, there’s no doubt about it. Hubbard leads the nation with 1,094 rushing yards, which is 268 more yards than Ohio State’s J.K. Dobbins in second place.

Hubbard loves to see the ball and will never say no to a rush, even if it means averaging 27 rushes per game. Coach Mike Gundy said he wants Hubbard to have 20-25 rushes per game.

This wide receiver core has a lot of potential. But when you look at everyone not named Tylan Wallace, it’s not looking so good. Wallace has the fifth-most receiving yards in college football. However, his 703 receiving yards are more than triple what Dillion Stoner, who has the secondmost yards on the team, has.

Defenses are more aware of Tylan Wallace’s ability this year.

They double team him almost every play. Wallace can still get open

while double covered and opposing defenses have pass interferences multiple times per game, but that’s not consistent enough. More options need to be used if the Cowboys want to make a run for a Big 12 title.

Linebackers: B+ Amen Ogbongbemiga has become the face of OSU’s defense this season. He has 3.5 sacks and 47 tackles through six games. If there’s an opposing player running towards him, Ogbongbemiga will most likely bring him down. Malcolm Rodriguez, who transitioned from safety to linebacker, has had

a great season as well.

The junior has a teamleading 49 tackles.

The rest of the linebacking core looks average. Phillip Redwine-Bryant and Kevin Henry have helped, but it looks like for the rest of the season it will be all Ogbongbemiga and Rodriguez.

Defensive Line: D Listen, it’s not going great for the defensive line this season. This isn’t the same squad that had Jarrell Owens and Jordan Brailford swallowing up opposing offenses last season.

This squad is young and very inexperienced. And

What a turnaround this season for Matt Ammendola. The senior kicker is a perfect 10-for-10 on the season. Ammendola worked out with former NFL kicker David Akers in the offseason and the improvement really shows. Although his longest field goal this season has only been 43 yards, there’s no doubt he can kick farther as his longest last season was 48 yards.

Tom Hutton has been a great addition to the Cowboys’ special teams as well. Hutton has pinned opponents inside the 20-yard line 11 times this season and only has one touchback. The only negative came against Texas Tech where he had some questionable.

If he’s given the time to improve on his craft in American football, he could have a tremendous four years here.

Barry Hinson walked into Gallagher-Iba Arena with a big smile on his face.

Donning an orange and black pullover jacket, Hinson made his first public appearance to the media as a member of the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team.

The 18-year head coaching veteran was named as an analyst on Tuesday.

“It’s just good to be home,” Hinson said.

“I enjoyed my time at Kansas but I didn’t graduate from Kansas. I

graduated from Oklahoma State University.

So to come back here and come home is a passionate and a really great opportunity for my wife and I.” Hinson spent the last eight seasons as the head coach at Southern Illinois. Before that, he had stops as an administrator under Bill Self at Kansas and the head coach at Oral Roberts and Missouri State.

Hinson’s hiring has been a secret among the team for the past two months. After talking to Mike Holder, OSU’s athletic director, and coach Mike Boynton, the decision was simple.

Hinson added that he had his tail between his legs after he stepped down as head coach for the Salukis last season.

“I know he loves this university,” Boynton said. “He’s gonna bring

unbelievable experience to our bench. It’s gonna help some of our younger coaches that understand what it takes to have success.”

Hinson’s connections to OSU men’s basket-

ball extend to assistant coach Scott Sutton.

Sutton was an assistant coach under Hinson at Oral Roberts from 1997 to 1999.

After Hinson accepted the head coach position at Missouri State, Sutton was named as his replacement.

Something that won’t be simple for Hinson is what his role is as an analyst. He said he doesn’t know what he will do yet.

“I don’t know, it’s new to both of us,” Hinson said. “(Boynton) has never had an analyst and I’ve never been an analyst. We’re just gonna find out how this thing works out.”

Hinson’s dedication and passion for OSU are second to none.

Hinson said he can even show you if you just give him a knife. “(If) you cut me open, I bleed orange, so let’s just get that straight right now,” Hinson said.

Hinson has had a long journey in basketball with many stops along the way. He said he always wanted one of those stops to be in Stillwater.

At 58-years-old, Hinson finally got his wish.

“Next to getting married and the birth of my children, this is one of the most special days of my life,” Hinson said.

Officers respond to possible gunshots at Edmon Low Library s taff r epo rt @ o c olly

Oklahoma State campus police investigated a report of possible gunshots heard at Edmon Low Library Tuesday morning.

A Cowboy Alert went out to all students and faculty at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday reporting that “officers are responding to possible reports of gunshots at Edmon Low Library” and warned to “please avoid the area.”

Officers with assault rifles and K-9 units investigated the building. No evidence of a gun going off was found in the library.

At 11:57, OSU Campus Safety sent out an update that “police have searched several floors of Edmon Low” and that the sounds “may have been from construction in building.”
