Through music, action and community service projects, Up with People is helping empower many young people around the world.

This week, it’s making a stop in Stillwater.

Up with People will perform public shows at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at Stillwater Public Schools Performing Arts Center. The proceeds from show ticket sales will fund student scholarships for Oklahoma State University students.

Up with People is a global education program that consists of teenagers and young adults between 17 and 29 years old, representing more than 20 countries.

While traveling around the world, members of the group perform musicals, help with community service projects and stay with a host family for the week they are in town.

Janne Van Doorslaer, Up With People’s promotion representative, said the group’s goal is to go beyond singing and dancing.

“We want to empower young people through music and social change, and we also do community service work the day after each show,” Doorslaer said.

Up with People was formed in the 1960s.

During a time when war and civil rights issues divided a nation, J. Blanton Belk, the group’s founder, said he saw an opportunity. “(We had) the ability of what governments failed to

do: to walk across borders, see beyond race and build bridges of understanding between people,” Belk said.

What began as a summer youth camp in 1965 quickly expanded around the globe.

The early leaders of the organization discovered music could bring people of different mindsets, cultures, ethnicities and beliefs together.

The program started as a performance of singing and dancing and slowly evolved into an educational program.

Throughout its performances, the group spreads a message about social action and issues to have awareness of around the world.

For many, Up With People has a lasting impact on their lives. Several of the members said their eyes are opened to the world after the seven months of traveling.

“This organization made me more accepting, made me get to know people and their story and made me think before I speak,” Hubele said.

Leaving their homes and traveling around the world for seven months can be hard, Hubele said. Time management is key for keeping the cast on track.

“Up with People allows you to take classes online, therefore you aren’t falling behind in school,” Hubele said. “You also have to manage your time on when you can talk with family and friends.”

The cast started talking to OSU’s Institutional Diversity office a few years ago and made plans to eventually come to Stillwater. That is finally coming to fruition this week.

“Once you get to know these people, you realize they are the nicest people ever,” Hubele said. “You can’t just see what’s on the news and make judgments.

(Gen.6:9) Noah found favor with God, and the Lord spoke to him about the flood that was coming to bring judgment and destruction to the people. There was no sign of a flood. Yet, Noah, because he believed what God had told him began building the ark. It took 100 years to construct the ship, with no sign of a flood.

Peter called Noah “a preacher of righteousness.” (2 Pet.2:5) I am sure he warned the people many times of the coming disaster.

Ten, thirty, fifty, eighty years passed, and Noah had to endure the ridicule and rejection of the people. When the ark was finished, Noah and his family entered, God closed the door and Judgment began.(Gen.7:16) The Bible tells us that God is patient, but there will be a time when after many, many warnings, God will shut the door of salvation and his anger and judgment will come on this earth. It is so important to stop and consider God’s offer of escape. Men in high places are telling us that “there is no God; there is not judgment to come; man controls his own destiny.” However, the Bible, which has stood the test of time, tells us of God, his eternal judgment, and of his way of salvation through Christ.

Noah trusted God and was saved. We can also trust God and be saved.
