Sophomores Aundrea Jackson and Tabitha Echols stood hand in hand as the audience in the Student Union Theater grew quiet with anticipation.

Jackson waited nervously for the host to announce the winner.

After experiencing racism first hand throughout her life, Jackson was now a moment away from being crowned Miss Black Oklahoma State University.

Finally, after a long silence, Jackson’s name was called out. The audience went up in applause.

Saturday, Jackson was crowned during the 49th MBOSU Scholarship Pageant. The pageant honors black history and allows the contestants to display their elegance, style and beauty.

For Jackson, this pageant was a way to stand up for diversity on campus and to continue her platform, Acts of Activism. She promotes not only keeping the African-American community unified during times of racially insensitive acts but also consistently on a day-today basis.

“From a young age I struggled with being viewed differently from society,” Jackson said. “Whether it be the

‘poofiness’ of my hair or the color of my skin, I never understood why people saw anybody as different. My freshman year of college I had a number of racial encounters, and I think that is what gave me the motivation to make it something I would avidly represent and stand for.”

The pageant had six phases allowing the contestants to present the judges and the audience with their talent, beauty and viewpoints.

Chico Harring, a judge and academic adviser at OSU, said he was impressed with the contestants’ passion and talents.

“We were looking for a little bit of everything: confidence, poise, but more so passion,” Harring said. “I think both ladies went above

and beyond in showing that.”

Miss Black OSU 2018 Marhia Mitchner said she is extremely proud of this year’s contestants and their creativity.

“This is definitely an awesome experience, especially for them,” Mitchner said. “There are two of them, so there is going to be a runner up, and there is going to be a queen.

They are both winners.”

As MBOSU, Jackson will be able to spread and implement her platform in hopes to bring everyone together. She said after experiencing racism she was able to really develop her platform and is looking forward to letting it unite the community.

“The biggest need I see on OSU’s campus for my platform is making civil rights a

Even in this day, Men and women are persecuted and even killed because they are Christians; followers of Jesus. In many places Christians are told not to speak and share their faith under penalty of prison. Even in this country, where there is guaranteed religious liberty, Christian leaders are sometimes warned not to pray in the name of Jesus. The Good News (Gospel) is the greatest message given to all mankind. It is the message of God’s love to people everywhere that Jesus died for their sins and was literally raised from the dead, and that through him God grants forgiveness of all sins and a new life by the power of Holy Spirit. This is worth standing for and giving out so that all may hear and hopefully believe. If there is a price (persecution) to be paid to do so, then may we gladly pay it.

movement, not just a motion,” Jackson said. “I think we only react or come together after a racially insensitive act as opposed to continuously working together throughout the semester. With my platform, Acts of Activism, I would like to really emphasize to the black community that we do matter, we do stand for something and we need to show society exactly what that something is.”

As MBOSU, Jackson said she hopes to unite the African American community on campus to help build support and invite diversity.

“My hope as Miss Black OSU on campus is to unify the black community as a whole,” Jackson said.

“I want to represent something bigger than

an individual and bigger than myself. I want to show the world what we are capable of when we come together. I think when society can reach that goal, the world will become a better place.”

Marcia Sun, one of the judges and coordinator of Asian-American affairs, said it was a wonderful event to be a part of, and she is excited to see how both contestants take on their leadership role.

“I think this is an opportunity for these young women to further develop their leadership and also promote their platforms through campus,” Sun said. “This is the start of black history month, so this is a great experience of being involved in such a great month and celebrate

diversity.”

Being MBOSU gives Jackson the ability to reach out to those who may be looking for ways to get involved on campus, and support those who have experienced racist acts and speech.

“My advice to those who have been affected by insensitive comments would be to keep on keeping on,” Jackson said. “I think the differences in society is what makes each and every one of us beautiful. Some people will never understand that, and they don’t have to.

You are beautiful. Be you.”

OSU Wind Ensemble to present ‘Fresh Ideas’ Tuesday J e t Turn er,

For the first time this semester, melodic music will fill the Seretean Center.

The Oklahoma State Wind Ensemble will be presenting some “Fresh Ideas” this Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts.

Their first concert of the semester, “Fresh Ideas” will showcase not only the Wind Ensemble, but also some of the Greenwood School of Music’s faculty in two world-premiere pieces.

The concert will begin with Joan Tower’s “Fanfare for the Uncommon

Woman,” a parody of Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man.” The next piece will be the world premiere of Paul Dooley’s “Manifestos.”

Afterward, the ensemble will present another world premiere, Carter Pann’s “Double Concerto for Clarinet and Alto Saxophone.” This piece features OSU’s Babette Belter, associate professor of clarinet, and Jeffrey Loeffert, associate professor of saxophone.

Belter said having two demanding parts in the “Double Concerto” is something she thinks the audience will enjoy.

Loeffert, though, said he is mostly excited for the audience to hear the ensemble.

“I’m excited for them to hear how good the ensemble is,” Loeffert said.

“It is a wonderful group of musicians in that Wind Ensemble and I think the piece shows them off really well. (It is a) special opportunity to collaborate with my colleagues as well as the wonderful students here.”

Joseph Missal, director of the wind ensemble, described what it is like to be the world-premiere group for two well-known contemporary American composers.

“I kind of feel like I’m walking across ice carrying their baby,” Missal said. “I don’t want to drop anything. I want to make it spectacular.”

The concert will close with Michael Daugherty’s “Bells for Stokowski.”

The importance of new music is a theme that will be stressed throughout the concert as Missal, Belter and Loeffert all had a hand in the commissioning of these new works. “(It is important) for us to have this constant input of new music, which we need to fill our souls,” Belter said. “It’s exciting to be a part of something that’s bringing something completely new to the music scene.”

Tickets for the event are $7 for students and $10 for general admission.

Crime Notes: SPD finds person, counterfeit money, church burglary

(Not) A Missing Person Police located a Stillwater woman Monday who had been missing since December.

The Stillwater Police Department issued a press release Sunday asking for the public’s help in locating Teresa Sue Porter, 49. According to the press release, Porter was reported missing on Jan. 19. Porter is homeless and lived in motels in the area before going missing. She had been last seen in December.

As of Feb. 4, police report that Porter has been found safe.

When officers searched him, they found a folded paper containing marijuana, a digital camera in a case and several keys. They also found several other items, including a cross decal.

One of the keys was labeled “Life Center,” which led SPD officers to the First Christian Church. An employee of the church verified all of the keys and several of the items belonged to the church, saying that the church leaves several of the doors unlocked for people to come in and out during operational hours. The church employee said the keys were for the Life Center and preschool area doors.

Mason said during questioning he was never at a church because he is not

allowed to be around children, according to the police report.

He pleaded guilty to second degree rape in Creek County in 2011. He was charged with Second Degree Burglary, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and violation of the Sex Offender Registration Act. He made his first appearance in court on Wednesday, where his bond was set at $5,000. He will make his next court appearance on March 4.

Gundy announces new offensive line coach one day after news of Henson’s departure Staf f R epo rt, @ ocollysp orts

No one had to wait long to find out who would fill Josh Henson’s spot.

Henson, the Oklahoma State football team’s offensive line coach since February 2017, is leaving to coach Texas A&M’s offensive line, Billy Liucci of TexAgs. com initially reported Friday.

The next day, OSU coach Mike Gundy tweeted at 12:02 p.m. that he had chosen Henson’s replacement.

“I’m excited to add Charlie Dickey to our FB

FAMILY as offensive line coach,” Gundy said.

“I’ve tried to hire Coach Dickey before but was unsuccessful because of his loyalty to Coach Snyder at Kansas State.

Coach Dickey will be here on Monday meeting with our offensive lineman (sic.). #GoPokes” Dickey retweeted Gundy’s statement.

A former starting offensive guard at Arizona, Dickey coached under Bill Snyder at Kansas State for 10 seasons.

When Snyder came back to Manhattan, Kansas, to coach the Wildcats in 2009, Dickey joined his staff. Before the 2016

season, Dickey assumed run game coordinator duties, though he continued coaching the offensive line.

Snyder, 79, declared Dec. 2 that he would retire for the next season, and Chris Klieman replaced him.

Dickey will have the opportunity to develop new talent on the Cowboys’ offense.
