Wallace, Cowboys steal show against Texas

Fourth and one is usually a down designated for a run play.

But the Oklahoma State football team had different plans.

With the second quarter winding down, OSU opted for a pass on fourth and one from the Texas 36-yard line. Taylor Cornelius dropped back and threw it deep to Tylan Wallace, who climbed the ladder and snatched the ball out of midair with his fingertips for the touchdown.

Two Texas defenders were draped over Wallace on the play, but it didn’t matter.

OSU (5-3 overall, 2-3

Big 12) went on to defeat the No. 6 Longhorns 38-35 on Saturday night at Boone Pickens Stadium in front of a raucous, sold-out crowd.

Wallace stole the show in a nationally-televised matchup. He hauled in 10 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns. He is the ninth receiver in the Mike Gundy era to eclipse 200 receiving yards in a game.

Wallace made multiple acrobatic catches on Saturday, showing an innate ability to time his jump and catch the ball at its highest point, something offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said he sees in him every day.

“He’s a special player,” Yurcich said. “He’s got a knack for timing his

jump up, so he plays a lot taller than he is, especially on vertical throws. He’s a gamer, he loves it, he thrives. The bigger the game, it seems like, the bigger he’ll play. He’s a guy that’s very dependable.

He plays the same way he practices. He’s a great example to everybody else that you play like you practice.”

For Wallace, Saturday’s game meant a little more.

Under the brightest lights of Taylor Cornelius’ career, he looked as comfortable as ever.

Cornelius, the Oklahoma State starting quarterback, dropped back to pass time and time again, his offensive line holding up in front of him with precision like never before, and he threw the ball confidently and powerfully.

He hit his receivers with regularity and rhythm unlike in every other conference game the Cowboys have played this season.

The result was a seasondefining 38-35 victory against No. 6 Texas at home

on primetime national television and a career-defining performance for Cornelius, a senior.

“Taylor played crazy today, man,” receiver Tylan Wallace said. “I’m real proud of him. I’m happy that he put the ball out there and let us make plays for him.”

Cornelius picked apart the Texas defense for 321 yards, three touchdowns through the air and two more on the ground Saturday. He seemed to locate Wallace every time the Cowboys needed an offensive spark. Wallace, a sophomore receiver, hauled in 222 of OSU’s yards through the air.

“I feel like Corn came out and did his thing,” Wallace said. “I feel like he showed

everybody that doubted him what he can really do. I feel like he threw pretty good balls for us to go out and make plays, and I think we did a pretty good job of that today.”

From OSU offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich’s perspective in the box, he said he could see something early out of Cornelius and the offense that he hadn’t seen in some of the other games this season: a fast start, which was crucial for building a lead and forcing the Longhorns to play from behind the entire evening.

Because of Cornelius’ touchdown passes, the Cowboys found themselves in the end zone during their first two offensive drives.

“He threw the ball well early and started us off fast with a heck of a throw to Tylan Wallace,” Yurcich said. “I think that just set everything in motion. Just being on time with that throw was huge.

And then just his guts, his will to win, and he’s a very competitive guy. Just very happy for the young man.”

The Cowboy offense didn’t find success through exclusively the passing game Saturday.

Junior running back Justice Hill added 92 yards on the ground to help lead a balanced attack, and freshman speedster Chuba Hubbard added 80 rushing yards.

“No good quarterback play can occur solo,” Yurcich said. “It takes a lot of good

blocking around him, it takes a lot of good receiving and it takes a lot of good running.

“Everybody has to celebrate a quarterback’s success because it’s just one of those positions that mirrors the overall performance of an offense, in my opinion.”

In the two weeks leading up to the Saturday night matchup, Cornelius didn’t listen to what people outside the program were saying. He didn’t use the criticism he has famously received in the public eye as motivation.

He said he doesn’t notice it.

“It doesn’t even faze him, honestly,” Wallace said. “He doesn’t pay attention to it.

We always keep him up. We trusted him, and he knows

that. I feel like he went out and did his thing today.”

For Cornelius, it was just another day on the gridiron, and he credited almost every offensive playmaker on the OSU roster in his postgame presser when asked about the Cowboys’ offensive success.

“I know they always got my back,” Cornelius said.

“It’s been like that since week one. I’ve always got theirs. It’s a tight-knit group, and we’re gonna go out and play for each other every week like Coach Gundy says, and we did that tonight.”

Stillwater Strong memorial unveiled 3 years after homecoming crash m egan hays campus news editor @ oco lly

With all of the festivities Oklahoma State University has during the weekend of homecoming, it is easy to forget what happened just three years ago.

But the Stillwater community is making sure the victims of the 2015 homecoming tragedy are always remembered.

Three years after a car drove into OSU’s homecoming parade, the Stillwater Strong Memorial was unveiled Friday at the corner of Hall of Fame Avenue and Hoke Street.

“Folks have been raising money over the last few years to make this memorial happen,” Will Joyce, Stillwater’s mayor, said.

football game, Kyle Eastham’s Leadership Stillwater class took up a collection to help fund the the memorial. Because it is a year since that fundraising and three years since the crash, Scott Petty, a volunteer at the memorial dedication, said the timing was coincidental, but it worked out well.

“We wanted to have it done in time for homecoming,” Petty said. “But a lot of hands were at work that made it happen, and it is very fitting that it is done the day before the parade, and I know it is a step closer to helping the families heal.”

Many whom the crash directly affected were at the dedication to help honor and remember their loved ones.

People including Keysha Sanders, whose mother was injured during the crash, came to show

their support.

“I came out to see faces I hadn’t seen in a while, give hugs again, love on the community that embraced us,” Sanders said. “It (the memorial) means that we’re honoring the ones we lost, and we are in the process of moving forward, and this is just bringing our community together once again.”

The memorial is in the shape of an awareness ribbon with the orange and blue of the Stillwater Strong movement. The concrete base has four panels that describe the four lives lost that day.

“It represents quite a bit,” Joyce said. “Certainly it represents the lives of the people lost in this tragedy and the survivors who were injured as well, but I think it also represents the spirit

of the Stillwater community and the coming together that we saw after this event.

“It represents that kind of essence of Stillwater, that idea that this is a community who even in the face of tragedy, and we’ve had our share, more than our share over the past 20

years, but we’ve built such a strong community here we see that spirit coming together, we see people help each other out, and I think this memorial really represents that.”

With a constant overturn of students coming to and leaving Stillwater, it can be easy to lose

these impactful events to time.

This memorial was meant to ensure that the community won’t forget those who were lost in the tragedy and those it affected.

“Stillwater Strong means so much more than the homecoming tragedy,” Sanders said. “It brought our community together once again. We are a tight-knit community.

Stillwater is home, been my home for my entire life, and it definitely changed that day, but something that was so negative has brought some peace and some closure for us to move forward.”

PRAYING AND SINGING PRAISES TO GOD! The jail experience of Paul and Silas has been used many times. Bear with me as I share a new excitement from Acts 16. Here were a couple of servants of God ministering in a new area. They had seen some success. However they ran into much difficulty. These men were severely beaten, feet put in stocks and theywere tired; it was midnight.

Most of us would have been praying and complaining. However, these two did something really unusual; “they prayed and sang praises to God.” Sometimes in life as we are doing “right”, circumstances go haywire and we find ourselves“kinda beat up” and hindered by difficulties. It is easy to get frustrated and just react in a negative way. Not only did they sing and pray, but did it loud enoughwhere all the prisoners could hear. It was wholehearted MONDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2018

praise! Now God steps in and does something that shakes the very foundation of their bondage and all their bonds fell off including the bonds of all the prisoners.

Paul and Silas chose to trust and honor God in this hard situation. God worked and others were helped as well. Even the jailer was converted when he saw what had happened. The situation started very badly, but turned around and worked something wonderful. One of the great keys is these men chose to turn that painful and humiliating event into a “wholehearted prayer and praise time.” No matter what happened, they had decided to honor God. Their faith set the stage for God to work! I want to encourage you (and myself) to choose this better way. If we are Christians why not actively trust God in the difficulties of life; not giving in to discouragement and self-pity. We believe that God reigns over all things. Let us practice it with the fruit of our lips. Who knows what the Lord will do? Most important; it honors God! OCOLLY.COM

Zach Sinor has had some monstrous punts during his career at Oklahoma State, but few kicks can compare to his latest missile.

OSU had just stalled out on its 34, and Sinor trotted out with an opportunity to flip the script of a game that was seemingly slipping out of the Cowboys’ control.

He demolished the ball, launching it 57 yards through the air and forcing Texas’ Brandon Jones to retreat to the 9-yard line. Jones was quickly tackled on his 2, and OSU had lassoed the Longhorns’ momentum.

“That’s ultimately the game winner,” Jim Knowles, OSU’s defensive coordinator, said.

“I think that’s a great series to look at where all three phases worked together.”

The Cowboys upset No. 6 Texas 38-35, but before Sinor’s punt, OSU’s special teams’ play was a sore spot.

Matt Ammendola, OSU’s redshirt junior kicker, missed a 41-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter and a 38-yarder late in the third.

OSU coach Mike Gundy said the two missed field goals influenced the play calling and time management late in the game.

Sinor, who fueled his grassroots Heisman campaign a season ago, gave the Cowboys a chance to clinch the upset at a time his team needed it the most.

“Zach (Sinor) always gets the ball inside the 5 or 10,” linebacker Justin Phillips said.

“Whenever we can get a big stop like that towards the end of the game, it really helped us and gave our offense good starting field position.”

The Cowboys capitalized

“That was huge from Sinor,” cornerback A.J. Green said.

“Huge from the whole special teams right there. I really thought they had him for a safety for a little bit, but as a defense we just knew we had to capitalize off that. That put us in great field position. We just had to respond.”
