‘Changing the game’

Moving out of the theatre and onto Library Lawn, Allied Arts breathes new life into Shakespeare.

Shakespeare on the Lawn breathes new life to ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ Megan Hays Staf f R epo rter @ megther ep orter

The universal Shakespeare experience in high school is reading Victorian English from a beat up book in a fluorescent lit classroom; Allied Arts partnered with students to change that experience with Shakespeare on the Lawn.

The students took the comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” out of the classroom or theater with an inaugural performance of Shakespeare on the Lawn on Tuesday night.

It started as an idea between friends Adam Glover and Ashley Fellhauer that turned into this student led, student acted and student produced production.

“We’re changing the game on how theater usually works,” Glover said. “I think it makes it totally different that what theater is suppose to be.”

A few months ago, auditions were held that emphasised the desire for this production to involve students outside of the theatre department which lead to the casting of accounting, zoology and many other majors taking part in the production.

“When me and Ashely were discussing this show, we wanted it to be totally student driven and not just one department driving it because we both loved theater in high school but due

to our majors we don’t always know when the next theater opportunity was,” Glover said. “We figured that there are other people like us and we wanted every major that could to try out and try their hand at theater because they really loved in it high school or they didn’t get to do it in high school, so this would be their opportunity to step out of their major for a little bit and explore a different passion.”

The focus on the students taking charge of the production meant leaning heavily on the students involved, like director Matthew Hedrick.

Luckily, Hedrick was up for the challenge.

“It is a lot of work but it is a lot of fun. I appreciate the opportunities I’ve been given, I get to wear a lot of hats and do a lot through this production as well as learning a lot about putting on a production and working with the people that are producing the show,” Hedrick said. “With this a lot was put on me and that was a really intense experience but not something I would want to trade for what I learned throughout it.”

With a diverse cast behind them, the team was able to reinterpret the classic play, bringing out themes and aspects that relate to college students today.

“At the core of this story is the theme that love is something you can’t

control,” Hendrick said.

“The idea of the story is there is these fairy creatures in control of these feelings these people have which is an allegory to that love is out of our control and something we can’t understand.

That is pertinent to today in Oklahoma in some respect. Which is why of the two main relationships in our show one is a straight relationship and one is not.”

The character Lysander became Lysandra. At the auditions, the team didn’t was more focused on getting people involved they were not worried about the traditional type to fill the role. This attitude allowed them to reevaluate the story to give the audience a new way to connect with the classic Shakespearean play.

Ari Bumgardner, who portrays Lysandra’s love interest Hermina, see this as the advantage of this production.

“There are a lot of people that have parts of themselves that they weren’t able to express because of the background they came from,” Bumgardner said. “So having the lesbian couple in it is something new.

Something like that, something you wouldn’t normally have and being able to express that part of yourself in such a beautiful way is amazing.”

Broadening the interpretations and bringing Shakespeare out

onto Library Lawn give students a chance to see themselves in the classic play.

“Being in college and the way we’re all making the story happen and that it is a non-conforming show where anything can happen,” Glover said.

“I think it reflects the college experience where today people think they can’t totally be themselves because of societal pressure that’s saying it is forbidden to be who you are. finished first in the Southland Conference with a 24-7 record last year. The Cowgirls and Lady Cardinals played last season, which ended in a 90-45 OSU victory.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane (Nov. 13) The Cowgirls’ first road game will come against a Tulsa squad that finished 13-18 last season. This will be the first time the Cowgirls and Golden Hurricane meet since 2002.

Rice will be the Cowgirls’ first real challenge of 2019.

Oregon Ducks (Nov. 28) The Cowgirls’ first game of the Paradise Jam is daunting. OSU will go up against Oregon, the No. 1-ranked team in the country. Wade Trophy and Wooden Award

winner Sabrina Ionescu may be the best player in the nation. Ionescu is the leader of a talented Ducks team that has their eyes set on a national championship.

Louisville Cardinals (Nov. 29) Things don’t get much easier for the Cowgirls when they play a Louisville team that ranks No. 9 in the Preseason AP Top 25 poll. The Cardinals lost star guard Asia Durr, but they still retain a strong core. Louisville went 32-4 last season and made it all the way to the Elite 8 in last year’s NCAA tournament.

UT Arlington Mavericks (Nov. 30) OSU finishes out the

Paradise Jam with a matchup against a solid UT Arlington team that finished first in the Sun Belt with a 24-8 record last season. The Cowgirls have gone 3-0 against the Mavericks since 2010.

Texas A&M Aggies (Dec. 7) After that brutal threegame stretch in the Virgin Islands, the Cowgirls head to College Station to play an Aggies tea that finished third in the SEC last season with a 26-8 record. Chennedy Carter, one of the best players in the country, leads an impressive Aggies squad that placed No. 6 in AP Preseason Top 25 poll.

Southern Lady Jaguars (Dec. 17)

Southern made the NCAA tournament last year on the strength of its 20-13 record. The last time Southern played OSU was in 2017 and the Cowgirls won 94-66.

Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (Dec. 20) Oral Roberts finished 18-13 last season for third in the Summit League. The Cowgirls have gone 8-2 against the Golden Eagles since 1999.

Duquesne Dukes (Dec. 30) OSU closes out its nonconference schedule against Duquesne. The Dukes went 19-13 last season for third in the Atlantic-10 Conference.

Kanye West’s gospelfilled Jesus Is King is finally out after a year wait, bringing fans a new sound centered around faith.

Jesus Is King, the ninth studio album from the 42-year-old rapper, designer, producer and entrepreneur, marks a distinctive departure from West’s previous work as this album focuses solely on his devotion to God and Christianity.

The most obvious difference between this album and Kanye’s previous music is the complete lack of cussing. This is a

notable change in direction, as a majority of his work has included an array of explicit content.

However, Jesus Is King replaces lyrics about the vices of modern society with praises to God and bars about his favorite Chick-Fil-A order. ‘Jesus Is King’ has incredible moments where Kanye’s creative process shines through gospel.

The song ‘Selah’, the first track after an intro from the Sunday Service Choir, is one of those shining creative moments.

With powerful organ chords, Kanye’s strongest verse writing in years and powerful drums, this song is an instant hit. However,

it’s at the halfway point of the track when the choir comes into a repetitious chorus of hallelujah’s that the song finds its magic.

‘Follow God’ is the following track and finds Kanye rapping like the old days, finding a pocket in a sample chop from the Whole Truth’s 1969 record ‘Can You Lose by Following God’. Here, Kanye is wrestling with his tendencies to argue and fight, particularly a fight with his father where his dad says that isn’t “Christ-like”. He goes on the point out that, “nobody ever tells you when you’re being like Christ”, which might be the most Kanye-like bar about

Christianity possible.

There is also the song ‘Closed on Sunday’ with the highly viral and meme’d, “you my ChickFil-A” line. While a bit silly, this is one of the better songs on the project.

The simple guitar riffs that are eventually traded for a piercing synth chord gives this song excellent replay value, while Kanye’s vocals glide across with ease. Plus, screaming “Chick-Fil-A!” will always be fun.

‘On God’, ‘Everything We Need’ and ‘Water’ are the point where the album starts to stumble.

‘On God’ features a Pierre Bourne instrumental which is unfortunately

matched with some of Kanye’s laziest writing and delivery. Lines like “when I thought the Book of Job was a job” and “that’s why I charge the prices that I charge”, this song fails to deliver the standard of quality that Kanye is usually known for.

‘God Is’ comes next and the album picks up stride again. With an incredibly passionate delivery from Kanye, he provides a look into exactly what his faith means to him.

With a piercing sample flip and powerful lyrics, Kanye’s final line, “thank you Jesus, won the fight” sounds like a victory lap for a man who has gone

through countless conflicts. ‘Use This Gospel’ comes in towards the end of the album and does the best to showcase Kanye’s collaborative abilities and how he is able to use them in the realm of gospel music.

Overall, Jesus Is King is a great album but far from Kanye’s best. However, after a stretch of albums showcasing Kanye’s pain and suffering it is welcoming to see him finding an immense joy and pride in what he is doing. While sonically this may not be his best work, Kanye has found happiness in his faith.

Mike Boynton has secured the most important recruit in his short head coaching career.

Cade Cunningham, the No. 2-ranked player in the class of 2020, according to 247 Sports, has commitment to the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team.

He announced his commitment on Tuesday in a video on Instagram.

“I remember dreaming about being able to pick what school I would go to,” Cunningham said in his video. “Being on the big stage with the lights on me, doing what I love to do.”

Cunningham, a 6-foot6, 215-pound guard from Arlington, Texas, goes to Montverde Academy in Florida.

Cunningham’s brother, Cannen, was hired to Boynton’s staff as an assistant coach in the offseason.

Cannen has been mostly working with OSU’s big men.

Cunningham also has a connection to another Cowboy basketball commit. Four-star guard Rondel Walker, who committed to OSU last Thursday, competed on the same AAU team as Cunningham.

“This process was stressful for me,” Cunningham said. “When my brother took a job at Oklahoma

State, most people assumed my decision had been made for me. But my family encouraged me to explore my options and make my own decision.”

Cunningham cut his top 5 schools to OSU, Washington, Kentucky, Florida and North Carolina before committing to the Cowboys.

ESPN has Cunningham projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

Cunningham is the highest-ranked recruit in OSU men’s basketball history.

“To be honest, I was this close to picking a different school,” Cunningham said. “But blood is always thicker than water. Go Pokes.”

Four days after clinching its four Big 12 regular season title, the No. 10 Oklahoma State soccer team collected a leaguehigh five All-Big 12 awards along with coach Colin Carmichael winning his conference-record sixth Coach of the Year award.

Kim Rodriguez and Grace Yochum made the All-Big 12 first team, with Rodriguez as a unanimous choice. Charmé Morgan, Jaci Jones and Olyvia Dowell made the second team. Dowell was also named to the All-Freshman team.

the regular season with a 14-1-3 (7-1-1 Big 12) record en route to a Big 12 title.

Despite her season-ending injury, Yochum is the Cowgirls leading scorer with 11 goals along with an assist. Jones has tallied seven goals and 12 assists in her senior season. Morgan and Dowell both have scored five goals thus far.

Jones and Yochum shattered their previous offensive totals this season.

In her freshman season, Yochum contribute four goals and an assist, nearly tripling her scoring number in her sophomore year.

In Jones’ first three years in Stillwater, she had never tallied more than nine goals and assist in a single campaign. In her

final year she managed 19 points, more than her sophomore and junior years combined.

Rodriugez led a Cowgirl defense that secured eight clean sheets and kept its opponents to 12 goals in 18 regular season games.

She also was a key piece going forward for OSU, scoring three goals along with six assists.

Prior to the season, the Cowgirls were voted to finish seventh in the Big 12 and had one player voted to a preseason AllBig 12 team in Rodriguez.

The Cowgirls will look to build upon their stellar regular season Friday as they face Kansas in the Big 12 tournament semifinals.

College athletes come and go, but what they do after school is mostly forgotten.

Jordan Sterns was a safety on the Oklahoma State football team from 2013 to 2016. He played in eight games his freshman year, started every game his sophomore and junior years and played all but one game his senior year.

Sterns had a careerhigh 108 tackles in his junior season as well as two interceptions and a forced fumble.

In his senior year, Sterns had a career-high three interceptions and five pass deflections.

He finished his career at OSU with 328 tackles, 12 pass deflections, five interceptions and three forced fumbles.

After graduation, Sterns tried his luck in the NFL draft. He wasn’t drafted, but signed as an undrafted free agent with the Kansas City Chiefs.

However, Sterns never played a snap in the regu-

lar season.

Sterns then took his talents to the Alliance of American Football (AAF) as a member of the Salt Lake Stallions.

“The AAF was a completely different experience than the NFL,” Sterns said. “As with all the new things, it brought excitement. Though it was a totally different vibe from the NFL, but certainly enjoyed my time.”

Unfortunately for Sterns, the AAF folded after about eight weeks and filed for bankruptcy.

Sterns decided to step away from the game after the AAF folded and is currently working on adjusting to life after football.

“I haven’t been up to much of anything,” Sterns said. “(I’m) transitioning at the moment. Working to become a writer myself.”

A football career does not last forever, and sometimes it doesn’t last as long as you hope it would. Sterns said he was grateful for his time in the NFL and AAF. “(My time with the)

Chiefs was dope,” Sterns said. “I got to learn from Eric Berry, who really helped elevate my game.

Playing in four preseason games was a dream come true.”

Sterns still has a close relationship with some players and coaches at OSU. Sterns’ family also has a strong connection with another Big 12 school.

Sterns’ brother, Caden, is a freshman safety at the University of Texas.

Jordan said he was conflicted when the Cowboys traveled to Austin, Texas to face the Longhorns, but he always wants to see his brother do well on the football field. “(I) was mostly neutral,” Sterns said. “Of course (I) want to see my brother ball, always. But (I) have a great relationship with Stillwater. Like with coach (Dan Hammerschmidt), other fellas on the staff and some players who I still text.”

From one of the biggest hit of OSU’s 2016 season to a professional in the NFL and AAF, Sterns fulfilled his childhood dreams after college.
