It has been almost two weeks since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and almost three months since Alejandra Santiago-Torres has been home.

Santiago-Torres came to Oklahoma State University to study geology and earn a master’s degree.

“I’ve lived 23 years of my life in Puerto Rico…

I came here Aug. 9th,” Santiago-Torres said.

Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on Sept. 20 as a category 4 storm with 155-mph winds, according to the National Hurricane Center.

“On Wednesday, the hurricane hit,” SantiagoTorres said. “So I kept calling my family at 2 a.m. just going at it calling, calling, calling and nothing.”

Hurricane Maria left the island without electricity. For days, communication was not possible. Santiago-Torres, who is a teaching assistant for Geology 1014, was unable to teach her labs that day.

“It was just like a really draining day, and the days that came after that were worse,” Santiago-Torres said.

“It’s like a struggle to get up in the morning, I talk to my mom every single day, and just the first day of silence (was) horrible.”

Santiago-Torres was able to speak to her father Sept. 25 and her mother on the 26th.

“My parents both called me from landlines because cell towers are still down where we live,” Santiago-Torres said.

Thirty percent of telecommunications were restored, 60 percent of gas stations were able to sell fuel and 50 percent of supermarkets opened

by Sept. 30, according to the Associated Press.

“Slowly, I’m starting to say that slowly, life is starting to come out of Puerto Rico because communication is starting to get fixed a bit,” Santiago-Torres said.

Electricity won’t be back up for months, though, Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello said in San Juan.

“We don’t really know when things are going to be OK,” Santiago-Torres said. “They (the government) said the power’s going to be up in two to six months, which is ridiculous, but everything is destroyed.”

Santiago-Torres had plans to go home and visit her family over Christmas break but now hopes to find a way home sooner.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen in the next five months, six months, and I’m afraid of going back to Puerto Rico in December if I can’t go back now,” Santiago-Torres

said. “What am I going to find? It’s like what I left in August is totally not coming back for two or three years at least, or I want to say more maybe a decade, and that sucks.”

She is worried about more than just her home and seeing what was destroyed.

“My mom’s diabetic, and I don’t know when she’s going to get her medication, her insulin,” Santiago-Torres said.

Since 1920, the U.S. has had a shipping regulation called the Jones Act. The Jones Act requires all goods shipped between U.S. ports to be brought in by U.S. ships and operated by Americans.

On Sept. 28, President Donald Trump waived

the Jones Act for Puerto Rico for 10 days. Normally, the Department of Homeland Security issues waivers at the request of shippers unable to find United States vessels to shuttle goods.

Sarah Huckabee Sanders, White House press secretary, announced Trump’s decision on Twitter following a request from Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello.

“At @ricardorossello request, @POTUS has authorized the Jones Act be waived for Puerto Rico. It will go into effect immediately,” Huckabee Sanders tweeted.

“If people can help in any way possible,” Santiago-Torres said.

“I saw a lot of support for Harvey, I saw a lot of support for Florida… and I just want to see the same support for Puerto Rico.”

Lee Bird, OSU vice president of student affairs, sent an email to try to help Puerto Rican students.

The email reads as following: “Our records indicate that you are from Puerto Rico that is currently reeling from the effects of the hurricane. I want you to know that your OSU family is keeping you and your loved ones

in our thoughts. Storms of this magnitude are terrifying and we often feel helpless in the face of such devastation.

We thought that it might be helpful for you to meet some of the other students from Puerto Rico to be able to support each other. I would like to invite you to my office on Monday, Oct. 2 at 4:00 pm to get you together with others from the area. If you are able, please drop by anytime between 4:00 and 4:30. My office is located in 201 Whitehurst.

Also, our office and University Counseling Services are available to help you any way possible during this difficult time. Please reach out to us if we can be of service to you.”

“It’s just to kind of extend a hand of friendship to those individuals,” Bird said. “Let them know each other.”

Bird identified six people, including Santiago-Torres, from Puerto Rico or with family there.

“I think the biggest need is for our students to know that there are other students... from that area and share concerns and needs,” Bird said.

Haley Woodard swiftly smacked a header past Baylor’s goalkeeper and straight into the net.

The sidelines erupted with life as Woodard’s Oklahoma State soccer teammates rushed onto the pitch to celebrate their 1-0 victory against Baylor on Sunday afternoon at Cowgirl Soccer Complex in Stillwater.

The No. 19 Cowgirls had almost run out of chances to score. After OSU and Baylor failed to score in regulation, the Cowgirls entered their first home overtime this season. “(It was) stressful,” coach Colin Carmichael said. “Those games are always tight, and

they could go either way. Both teams had opportunities.”

Although OSU and Baylor did have opportunities, they didn’t always take advantage of them. As the clock wound down in overtime, both teams were still scoreless.

Then with 1:53 left in overtime, Charmé Morgan, an OSU wingback defender, crossed the ball to Woodard, a junior forward, to set up Woodard’s goal that sealed the Cowgirls’ victory. It marked Woodard’s sixth goal of the season and made her OSU’s leading scorer.

Although OSU (10-1-2 overall, 3-0 Big 12) waited to make its key offensive move until the end of the match, the Cowgirls’ defense suppressed the aggressive Baylor offense

from the beginning.

Michela Ongaro, a senior goalkeeper, credited the Cowgirls’ defenders for providing the foundation to stand up against the Bears (7-3-2, 1-2-1).

“This whole weekend, I haven’t had to do that much, to be honest with you,” Ongaro said. “My defense has stepped up. It has been outstanding.”

Ongaro had seven saves against Baylor, and she fiercely protected OSU’s net as soon as the match started. In the 21st minute, Ongaro had tallied four saves. Carmichael said Ongaro’s skills didn’t surprise him.

The stress of overtime melted away after Woodard’s goal, and OSU’s theme of positive energy continued. When Carmichael participated in postgame interviews, Woodard and Ongaro laughed as they sprayed him with cold water from Gatorade bottles, and Ongaro yelled, “Go Pokes!”

Cowgirls stay perfect at home After losing five times at Cowgirl Soccer Complex last season, OSU has made it a fortress in 2017.

The reemergence of Ongaro’s confidence in goal and the consistency of the defense has been the biggest factor in this run, but Haley Woodard’s team-leading six goals can’t be discredited.

Ongaro said her back line doesn’t receive the attention it

deserves, though it has allowed only two goals in six home matches.

After Carmichael stressed the importance of the Big 12 home matches a couple of weeks ago, the team has won its first two against Oklahoma and Baylor.

Woodard said the Cowgirls took Carmichael’s words to heart because they have a goal of winning the conference title.

“We talked about if we want to win the Big 12 or get a good seed in the Big 12 tournament, we have to win the home games,” Woodard said. “Those are like not the easiest, but it’s easier to win at home on your own field with your own fans.”

Review: ‘American Made’ offers a stylish take on a true story a fairly normal life with his wife Lucy (Sarah Wright) and their children until CIA agent, Monty Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson), confronts him at work.

He tells Barry that he is too talented to not be serving his country and offers him a deal with the CIA. Initially he asks Barry to fly reconnaissance missions taking pictures of enemy territory.

Barry finds the monetary reward from the CIA lacking and asks Monty for a raise but is not granted his wish.

He struggles to provide for his family until he meets famous drug lord Pablo Escobar (Mauricio Mejia) during one of his trips over seas.

Tom Cruise offers another thrilling, action-packed performance in Doug Liman’s new movie “American Made,” set during the IranContra Scandal.

Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) is the inspiration of the movie and a pilot who smuggles drugs and arms overseas. The movie focuses on the adventures that Barry experiences during his time smuggling contraband for the CIA. Barry starts out as an airline pilot with a small Cuban cigar smuggling business on the side. He leads

Barry’s missions become more involved until he is in over his head dealing drugs for Pablo Escobar and arms for the CIA. He struggles to balance his job with the CIA and his deal with Escobar.

After each drug exchange, Barry is rewarded with a backpack or duffel bag filled with thousands of dollars

Barry must find a way to keep both the CIA and the cartel happy without entangling himself with the authorities. When Barry’s brother-in-law visits, he discovers Barry’s numer-

Barry must quickly decide where his loyalties lie and what he must do to keep himself out of prison. His is offered a hard choice and must decide who to work for.

Tom Cruise has made a name for himself playing this type of role and he delivers his signature performance to fans once again. He makes Barry charming and keeps the movie relatively lighthearted despite its serious nature.

Sarah Wright compliments Cruise’s care-free attitude with her skepticism of Barry’s choices. Despite

her skepticism, she offers unconditional support that fans will find endearing.

Donhnall Gleeson illustrates the shadier bunch of CIA agents and only sides with Barry when it benefits him.

This movie provides many highs and lows that keep the audience attentive to Barry’s story. Overall, “American Made” delivers audience with a well-rounded display of emotions that make the movie widely successful.
