Mike Boynton could not move without bumping into a recorder.

Myriad reporters swarmed Boynton, the Oklahoma State men’s basketball coach, as he spoke Thursday inside Gallagher-Iba Arena for the first time since former OSU associate head coach Lamont Evans was reportedly arrested for federal bribery, corruption and fraud charges.

Evans allegedly took cash bribes to deliver athletes to advisers or agents.

Evans is gone; he was fired for cause last Thursday. A week later, it’s still hovering over OSU basketball and Boynton. He hasn’t coached a game yet, but Boynton understands he is under the microscope.

“I can go out here and do the job that I’ve done for six months or so and continue to pour into those players,” Boynton said. “Continue to communicate with their parents that there are good people here that are looking out for their children and make sure that our administration continues to know we’re doing things the right way.”

As far as OSU’s brand, Boynton said he didn’t have time to think about that. He was sitting on the tarmac in Oklahoma City heading toward FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2017

Boynton said his mind raced during the 45-minute flight.

When Boynton landed in Dallas, his next steps were onto another plane toward Oklahoma City then to Stillwater to be with his team. He said his players have been his greatest sense of relief since practice started three days after the allegations came out.

“It wasn’t this long period of time to speculate or think about all these other things,” Boynton said. “These guys are excited about starting the

season and so am I.” Boynton is in his 14th season in college basketball and said he has never been on a staff involved in a situation like this. College basketball hasn’t seen anything like it, either.

Nine others, along with Evans, were arrested on similar charges as part of the nationwide scandal.

Boynton said he hasn’t talked to Evans since the incident, nor did he have suspicions about any incidents.

“I was as shocked as anyone when this happened,” Boynton said.

“I learned of it just like

probably many of you did by opening Twitter and seeing the headlines.

I was shocked and it’s a sad situation” In court documents, a player, referred to as

“Player-4” in the documents, was described to meet with Evans in a hotel in West Virginia before the Cowboys played the Mountaineers. Boynton was asked about the player, who the document said is still on the team, and he didn’t comment.

Boynton was unable to comment on a lot of questions because of the ongoing investigation.

Former Cowboys guard Keiton Page has taken some of the responsibilities as a third coach. Although Page is still listed as Director of Player Development, Boynton said he will figure out a solution for the spot and do what is best for the team.

Amidst the distractions, Boynton said his roster excites him.

“I like our versatility,” Boynton said. “I think we’ve got guys who are committed to trying to win a championship.

That’s been their focus since they got here in June. We’ve had them here all summer and now through the fall and now as we get ready for practice, I like our versatility.”

Boynton said everyone has to take on more responsibility and work toward a successful season.

Although Boynton said he hasn’t lost any sleep over the Evans’ scandal, he said it’s another thing he and the Cowboys have to overcome.

“I don’t know about frustrating,” Boynton said. “It is another challenge. It’s been the story of my life. I’ve faced challenges at a lot of points in my life. It’s one that I’m confident with my staff and my players that we will be able to get through.”

Jaci Jones needed just 10 minutes to clear her mind.

As Jones watched her teammates from the sidelines, frustrated, she tried to regain a levelheaded mentality.

Later in the match, Jones could not contain her joy as she jumped and ecstatically celebrated her goal that gave Oklahoma State’s soccer team an advantage against TCU. Jones, a sophomore midfielder from Mustang, had struggled in much of OSU’s 2-0 win against TCU, but she didn’t let that break her.

Discouragement is not part of Jones’ mindset.

Colin Carmichael substituted Marlo Zoller for Jones. As Jones headed to the sidelines, slightly defeated, Carmichael was there to encourage her.

“Hey, in those big moments, just relax,” Carmichael told Jones. “You’re trying too hard. Get a glass of water. Don’t worry about it.”

Jones took his advice.

“You good to go?” Carmichael later asked.

“I’m good,” Jones said.

Eight minutes later, she netted a goal off an assist from Haley Woodard.

Carmichael said he knows Jones has a perfectionist streak.

“Whenever she makes a mistake, she doesn’t beat herself up, but you can see she demands a very high standard of herself,” Car-

michael said. “Sometimes, we have to calm Jaci down because she’s so fired up and excited to play.”

But he also knew she had the ability to quickly find her composure. He recognizes her energy and leadership qualities. That’s why he named Jones a team captain with Julia Lenhardt, a fellow sophomore midfielder, and Michela Ongaro, a senior goalkeeper.

Jones’ work ethic and competiveness stand out to Carmichael, but he didn’t choose her as a team captain only because of the qualities she demonstrates during a soccer match.

Carmichael said Jones ensures she arrives to practice on time. She cares about her work in the classroom, and she follows the standards for

NCAA athletes.

“She’s just a well-rounded kid,” Carmichael said.

When Carmichael asked Jones last spring if she could envision herself as a team captain, she was surprised, but she was accustomed to serving as a leader for teams before she arrived at OSU. Jones said the adjustment to her duties as team captain is the biggest challenge she’s faced this season, but her teammates keep her responsibilities from overwhelming her.

“Our team makes it so easy,” Jones said. “Even though I’m named a captain, there are so many other leaders on the team that it makes my job so much easier. I don’t even feel like anything’s really different.”

said she quickly noticed Jones’ talent during Jones’ freshman year.

“Last year, she really came in and made an impact,” Beffer said. “She immediately hit the ground running, and she was just a hard worker.”

Jones started 10 matches as a freshman and received Big 12 All-Freshman Team honors. This season, Jones has played in all 13 of OSU’s matches so far and has tallied three goals and five assists.

Friday, the Cowgirls meet West Virginia in Morgantown, and it’s a significant day for Jones for another reason: it’s her 20th birthday.

“I’m no longer a teenager,” Jones said, smiling. “It’s a big step.”

OSU has never defeated the Mountaineers, and Jones said a victory against WVU

would be the best birthday present she could ask for.

As the Cowgirls encounter challenging opponents such as the Mountaineers, Jones’ bubbly enthusiasm is a glue that helps hold her team together. Beffer said Jones and other young players have contributed to the Cowgirls’ new, positive outlook this season.

“She’s played a role in how our culture has shifted,” Beffer said. “Everyone’s bought in, and I think that will definitely help the program moving forward.”

It wasn’t until Sanders was in his teens though that he learned to skate on ice. He went to play a pickup game of hockey in Oklahoma City with some friends thinking it was just a regular game of roller hockey. Upon arriving at the location, he realized they would be playing on ice.

Sanders, supervisor of mechanical, electrical and plumbing for operations and maintenance in Facilities Management, joined Oklahoma State University in 2013 as a plumber II. He spends his days upgrading facilities to everyday standards, troubleshooting equipment and making sure work orders are taken care of across campus.

“Each day is different, which I love about what I do,” Sanders said. “You can get stagnant in work sometimes but it has never happened here. That makes coming to work enjoyable.”

But his real love is ice hockey.

When Sanders was a child, he and his family loved to go roller skating.

Eventually this turned into his parents managing a roller-skating rink called Stillwater Skate Center when Sanders was 16 years old. There, he learned to live life while moving on wheels and how to take care of building maintenance.

“I loved the rink,” he said. “It was just a fun place to hang around, and you learn some different things there that you might not learn anywhere else.”

“I kind of stood there and said, ‘Um hey guys, I don’t know how to ice skate,’” Sanders said. “They all laughed and just said, ‘Well, it’s the same thing.’ I got out there and tried and have been in love with it ever since. It's not every day that you meet someone who plays, especially living in Oklahoma.”

Twins Taylor and Alexis Coles, OSU freshmen entomology majors, will study the effects of insects on Native Americans and agriculture as part of a research program for American Indian students begun by the Center for Sovereign Nations. Insects kill more than 1 million humans a year and eat about 20 percent of the world’s food, but the rates of insect-related illnesses in Native Americans are almost twice those of non-Natives. The Coles hope to become doctors and help their tribe, the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

This willingness to try something new followed him into his career with OSU.

“

But just like an ice hockey team, Sanders and his team come together for a common goal. Whatever blocks there might be on a project, Sanders and his team must come together and find the best and most efficient way to accomplish the goal. Sanders said it helps when there are different types of people with different personalities working on each project.

“

There is a melting pot of people here, each with their own views and way of thinking about things,” Sanders said. “I don’t think there is a better place to be than here.

”

After months of hard work, the Oklahoma State University Department of Theatre’s “The Birds” was ready for opening night Thursday.

OSU Theatre students are performing “The Birds,” a play based on a Daphne du Maurier short story, at the Seretean Center this weekend. It starts when two strangers, Nat and Diana, played by Hayden Yoder and Jacquelyn Wieden, are stranded in a house after birds have begun to attack the human race.
