Valentin Brito soared through the air before he fell into his fraternity brothers’ arms.

They cheered and laughed as they tossed Brito into the air once more.

Once Brito landed and composed himself, his family surrounded him and his mother hugged her son, who had just been named Mr. Hispanic/Latino OSU 2019.

Filled with emotion, Brito couldn’t help but smile as he and the brothers of Omega Delta Phi chanted on stage and posed for photos.

Brito and seven other contestants competed for the title of Mr. and Miss Hispanic/Latino OSU on Saturday in the Student Union Theater in front of a crowd of about 200.

Arlene Aguero, Fabiola Gonzalez, Iris Maeliz Martinez, Michelle Fierro, Celeste Rivera and Casandra Salinas were the six contestants for the Miss Hispanic/Latino OSU 2019 pageant.

Flores said she was overjoyed with the turnout at the pageant, and she said the night was a testament to the dedication of each of the contestants.

“I have never seen so much hard work put in,” Flores said. “I have never seen so much growth and confidence and pride within such a short time. These past five months have been incredible and I’ve loved watching (the contestants) grow.”

Brito, donning socks with the Venezuelan flag and his new “Mr. Hispanic OSU 2019” sash, said he is proud to be Latino at OSU and said he’s thankful for the opportunity to represent his community.

“No matter which Latino background or culture we come from, we will stand proud of where we’re from and

we’ll stand proud to be Latino,” Brito said.

“Being Latino means we have a hard work ethic.

We have great music; our language and our traditions are what make us feel alive. It’s what makes us happy. It’s what makes us proud to be Latino.”

The pageant consisted of four portions: cultural wear, talent, live question and formal wear.

The talents ranged from musical performances on the steel drums and piano to soccer ball dribbling, dancing, poetry and singing.

Each of the contestants displayed their pride in their heritage as they wore captivating clothing like Maeliz Martinez’ golden dress that had a Puerto Rican flag and flower on the wings.

Also there can be problems because of their calling to follow Christ and his plans for their lives, The plans that bring lasting fruit and eternal reward. We can be tempted to “look back”, compromise our walk with God and even give up in following and serving God. This is very real! Yet, it is a lie; thoughts from the devil himself Keep your eyes on the eternal; God’s purposes for your life. In 2010 OSU had 84 Hispanic undergraduate degrees awarded, Kirksey said.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, 265 bachelor degrees were granted to Hispanic students, according to the OSU Student Profile.

Although the growth in the Hispanic community at OSU is evident, Kirksey said work toward diversity and inclusion is never over.

“While we are certainly very proud of that, we’re not satisfied,” Kirksey said. “We understand that there’s a whole lot more that we can do, we will do and we are committed to do.”

Johnny Resendiz, Mr. Hispanic/Latino OSU 2018, delivered an emotional

speech thanking his family, team and fraternity brothers for their support. Resendiz spoke about his platform, mental health in the Hispanic community, and said he is hopeful for future generations of Hispanic students at OSU. “My best advice for the next Mr. and Miss Hispanic/ Latino OSU is don’t ever treat this like a job,” Resendiz said. “Make sure you do everything with the most passion you guys have got…

It has been a great honor to be Mr. Hispanic OSU 2018 and I’m going to miss it so much.”

At the conclusion of the pageant, Kirksey said he will award $250 scholarship to each of the eight Mr. and Miss Hispanic/Latino OSU 2019 contestants, and he pledged another $250 for the Spring 2020 semester if they earn at least a 2.75 GPA. Kirksey said he will

also extend the same offer to Aundrea Jackson and Tabitha Echols, the two contestants for Miss Black OSU, and the seven contestants who will participate in the Mr. and Miss Asian OSU in April.

Kirksey said he was glad he attended and said the hard work and leadership each of the contestants displayed inspired him. “(The Mr. and Miss Hispanic/Latino OSU pageant) has set a bar that I would like to see all our organizations reach,” Kirksey said.

“Continue to go on the path that you’re on, be engaged and make Oklahoma State University a better place to be for everyone.”

This application process in‑ volves two separate posi‑ tions; EIC for Summer and EIC for Fall. Applicants can apply for one or the other, or both positions. Be sure to in‑ dicate which position(s) you wish to be considered for on the application form.

Positions available for Fall 2019

To be eligible for Editor‑In‑ Chief, the applicant must be a student on the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University, be in good aca‑ demic standing (i.e., not on academic probation), have a grade point average of not less than 2.5, and have com‑ pleted at least 60 hours to‑ ward a degree. Applicant must show evidence of hav‑ ing worked one semester writing for The O’Colly. Students serving as an Editor‑in‑Chief may take up to 6 credit hours of independent study in consultation and approval of their major advisor.

An internship on a newspa‑ per in a newsroom capacity may be substituted for one semester of service on The O’Colly. The internship must meet the requirements of the School of Media and Strate‑ gic Communications’ current internship course.

February quickly became my least favorite month this year.

Not because I was dateless this Valentine’s Day, again, but because my diet for the month consisted of fruits, vegetables, nuts and legumes.

Similar to Oklahoma State basketball coach Mike Boynton, I spent the past month on a restricted diet.

Boynton has done the diet for numerous years, even before coming to OSU. I, stupidly, thought it would be a good idea to join him.

So for 28 days, I ate what my friend called a “rabbit’s diet.”

During the month, I had two bets.

MONDAY, MARCH 4, 2019

One was with my friend and coworker T.C. Brewster.

He bet me $20 that I could not last the week. That was easily completed and now he is probably ashamed for making the bet.

The second bet was for the whole month. My coworker Nhan Doan bet me $100 and, with a giant smirk on my face, I agreed. He, similar to T.C., said there was no way I would complete the challenge.

I, however, had other plans.

I knew the first week was going to be the worst.

The main reason was that on the third day, it was the Super Bowl. It was even worse because the New England Patriots, my hometown team, was playing.

I went to my former coworker’s apartment to watch the game. He thankfully

bought me a bag of grapes from Walmart while he ate pizza and queso.

Luckily, the Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl so it wasn’t the worst experience.

Week one was mostly getting adjusted to the diet.

I started drinking more water than I usually did to keep myself feeling full. There were many times where I felt myself hungry, and if I was in class, I would quickly drink a bottle of water.

For the food I ate, I stocked up at Walmart the night before the challenge started.

It was a lot of canned fruits and vegetables because they have a long shelf life. My favorite thing to eat throughout the challenge was pineapple.

It helped me get my daily dose of vitamin C and helps with weight loss.

During the second week, I could feel myself getting more fatigued and tired. I knew I was not eating nearly as many calories as I needed.

It didn’t help that one night I stayed up for 36 hours straight to study for three exams I had on one day.

I also caught a cold during the week and couldn’t have the remedial chicken soup to help me feel better.

I was stuck with water and two cans of green beans.

Yummy.

The third week I was starting to feel better and the challenge started to become an after thought as I got used to it.

Whenever people asked how the challenge was going, I would just shrug and say “it’s going.”

about the third week, knowing that I could finish this challenge. He attempted to get me to cheat, but the thought of $100 kept me on track.

The last week was somehow the easiest and the hardest week. On Monday, with no energy, I went to my intramural basketball game to face an undefeated team.

At six feet tall, I play the center position. The opposing team’s center happened to be 6 feet 6. I knew it was not going to be a good game.

To give myself a slight humble brag, I somehow kept him to only four points when I guarded him and we won the game. It was our first and likely only win of the season.

On Wednesday, I woke up feeling awful. I went to the newsroom and did some work

to pass the time. Adam Luther, the O’Colly’s social media editor, said I looked malnurished.

I went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. I was a little pale and there were brownish-black circles around my eyes. I went home and fell asleep around 8 p.m. I did not set an alarm and proceeded to sleep 14 hours, waking up at 10 a.m. the next day.

Thankfully, that was the last day of my challenge. I went to my classes, worked on Friday’s paper and went back continue reading on ocolly.com
