Network of mentors inspires Anei to strengthen basketball dreams, change perspective on life Hallie Hart, Staff Reporter, @ Hallieha rt

Victor Williams’ eyes scanned the basketball court for the tallest person in the gymnasium.

Bewildered, Williams couldn’t find him.

Williams, the coach of Team Rush, an AAU squad in Kansas City, looked for Yor Anei, a 6-foot-10 junior power forward.

That night at a Shawnee Mission South game in Overland Park, Kansas, Williams learned mostly about what Anei wasn’t doing.

He wasn’t going to school consistently, making high grades or playing high school basketball. Anei, supposedly a basketball star, sat among friends on the bleachers, chuckling and sporting his signature smile as his former team prepared to play without him.

“I really didn’t know why he was in the stands,” Williams said.

As Williams, a former Oklahoma State basketball player, heard about Anei’s situation from people at Shawnee Mission South, he was compelled to make a difference. The next day, they had a two-hour, perspective-shifting conversation in Williams’ gym around the corner from the two-bedroom apartment where Anei lived with his mother.

Tears filled Anei’s eyes.

It was the beginning of a “big brother, little brother” relationship, as Williams described it.

“Yor, if I had a 6-10 kid for my AAU team, we’re gonna be great,” Williams said. “‘But the most important thing is that I change your life.”

The believers Since Anei was in fifth or sixth grade, Williams had been acquainted with him.

As time passed, Anei began to refine his raw talent, but he said he overlooked opportunities to join Williams’ AAU team. Williams contacted his friend Aaron Washington, a former basketball player at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, and wanted to connect with Anei.

When Anei was a lanky teenager who ran across the court on his tiptoes, Washington, then a stranger, noticed his talent.

Anei, an eighth-grade student, was shooting in the gym at Prairie Life Fitness in Overland Park when Washington approached him.

“I see a lot of potential in you basketball-wise,” Washington said.

Anei said he didn’t know whether he wanted to play.

He hadn’t started taking basketball seriously until a year earlier. As a kid, Anei preferred to watch cartoons, though his older brother loved basketball, said Adut

“I had no idea what to say or anything,” Anei said. “I was kind of intimidated.”

Washington worked out with Anei’s older brother but said he had no idea about the connection when he met Anei. Washington quickly recognized unique talent. Anei, who was nearly 6-6 at 14, ran like a deer, Washington said.

“I was like, ‘Oh, man, this kid could be somebody,’” Washington said. “…When I (saw) him shoot

and when I noticed that he only had three fingers on one hand, I was even more intrigued.”

Anei lost the index and middle fingers on his right hand when he reached into a blender as a toddler, but the two missing digits never impeded him on the court.

He shot with his left hand, something Washington noticed. Washington started training with Anei, and they spent time together nearly every day.

Although Anei had newfound confidence, there was something blocking his

progress.

The connector Many evenings, Anei was alone in his small apartment.

His mother, Kathleen Akot, worked late, long shifts as a caretaker. She fled South Sudan, her warravaged country, before giving birth to Anei, her youngest child. Anei’s father returned to Africa, but Akot chose Overland Park, where she labored in pursuit of a better life for her family.

When Anei’s older siblings went to college, no one remained to hold him accountable.

“I really would come home, and it was my decision whether I would do homework or not,” Anei said. “And I was like 16, 17, so I was kind of irresponsible.”

Along with his grades, his basketball career temporarily tanked. Anei said after not starting in multiple games, he was kicked off the Shawnee Mission South team during his junior year.

Anei heard the chatter.

People in the community said he wouldn’t play college basketball despite his promising skills and rare size. With guidance from mentors such as Washington and Williams, Anei ignored the doubters’ words. Williams said he believes it was God’s purpose for him to help Anei.

“His mom was working to provide for the family, and I just wanted to put him in a structured situation,” Williams said. “Yor’s a really good kid.”

Anei joined Williams’ AAU team and quickly formed a friendship with his teammate Christian Bishop. Williams then linked Anei with Jennifer and Jerry Bishop, Christian Bishop’s parents, hoping they could give Anei the support he needed.

After Williams told them Anei’s story during a spring 2017 AAU trip, they created a plan.

The motivators At first, it was one summer.

The Bishops welcomed Anei into their home the summer after his junior year.

With three kids living at home and one visiting from college, they didn’t have a bedroom available, so Anei slept on a futon in Christian Bishop’s room. His feet dangled off the edge of the too-small sofa bed, but he quickly fit in with the warm, loving family. The Bishop kids called Anei their brother.

Jennifer and Jerry Bishop didn’t have a tough decision to make.

“We both looked at each other, and we both knew,” Bishop said.

After a few days of living

with Anei, they asked.

“Yor, do you want to live with us forever?”

“Forever” was until Anei left for college, his ultimate goal, though Anei is always welcome in the Bishops’ house as part of the family.

The Bishops didn’t adopt Anei but signed a legal guardianship document so he could live with them and transfer to Lee’s Summit West, the high school Christian Bishop attended.

Initially, Anei’s mother was hesitant, but her love for Anei overcame her doubts and pain.

Akot explained the situation to her older children.

“He struggled, so let him stay with (the) Bishop family,” Akot said. “Maybe they will help him to make it to college.”

Jennifer Bishop said Anei wasn’t on track to graduate from high school, but she persistently reminded him she wouldn’t let him fail. As Anei enrolled in summer school before his senior year and took night classes, the Bishops helped him stick to a rigorous schedule.

“That was the hardest year I’ve had throughout my four years of high school,” Anei said.

Simultaneously, he continued his basketball career and thrived, making the Missouri Boys Coaches Association Class 5 All-State Team and going on recruiting visits. As coaches pursued Christian Bishop, who chose Creighton, it was a chaotic year for Jerry and Jennifer Bishop.

Anei filled their home with positivity.

“He’s just got a heart of gold,” Jennifer Bishop said.

Anei’s skills and kind spirit caught the attention of Mike Boynton, OSU’s men’s basketball coach, who was building

his first recruiting class.

“Just knowing that he encompasses some of the values that we appreciate in our program, and that he’s got a great work ethic, a tremendous personality, he’s a kid that wants to win,” Boynton said. “It’s hard to get on Yor because he already puts a lot of pressure on himself to do what he can for his teammates.”

He offered Anei a scholarship Sept. 24, 2017. On Nov. 8, 2017, Anei became Boynton’s first recruit to sign with the Cowboys.

“It’s great to see how successful he’s been and how he’s blossomed out of so much struggle,” Jennifer Bishop said.

Akot said she realized she

shouldn’t be reluctant to let others guide him and credited the Bishops for helping him.

Through it all, Anei never forgot his mom’s strength.

The future mentor A message greets him on the dry erase board when he enters his room at OSU. Other phrases, including “Outwork every man” and “I am a pro; I believe that” are on the board, but they are afterthoughts compared to his main slogan.

“48-hour shift, you not tired.”

For Anei, an OSU freshman, it’s a reminder of Akot’s work ethic. As a caretaker, a 48-hour shift is normal. She

said Sundays are usually the only nights she spends at her apartment.

Akot prays for Anei every day. Amid her sacrifices, she clings to her dreams. She said she wants Anei to play in the NBA, to provide a comfortable life for the family.

“Yor can help the poor,” Akot said. “He can help the poor because we suffer a lot, and I see if you have something, you can help people who (have) nothing.”

With the help of those who had time, advice and care, Anei shifted his perspective.

“He’s got a lot of people to thank for him being here,” Boynton said.

No one had as much of an impact on Anei as he had on

himself. He proved the doubters wrong, earning a college basketball scholarship and setting OSU’s freshman records for single-game blocks (eight) and most blocks in a season (78). His mentors recognize how he can use his encouraging, optimistic demeanor and his story to uplift people.

“I talk to him about being able to take on that responsibility because he has a gift in that area,” Williams said.

The Stillwater City Council approved a Specific Use Permit 3-1 for a medical marijuana growing facility and dispensary inside Stillwater city limits on Monday.

The Stillwater Planning Commission already approved Specific Use Permits for both businesses.
