Dear class of 2019, We made it. In a few short days, the class of 2019 will take the stage in GallagherIba Arena and become alumni of Oklahoma State University. Years of hard work, hours upon hours of studying and thousands of memories have culminated into this final week as students at OSU. I’m usually not one to get sentimental, but this week has challenged my normal “live-in-the-mo-

ment” approach to life. During these last few days in Stillwater, I’ve tried to focus on taking in each moment and appreciating a series of “last times.” The last time I’ll help make an issue of the O’Colly. The last time I’ll take a final exam (finally). The last time I’ll go to IHOP late on a Monday night with my closest friends. Although I can always go to IHOP with them again sometime down the road, it’s important to reflect and cherish these moments as college students. These formative years
will be some of best times of our lives, and, as my professor Shane Hoffman says, “The only time we’ll be surrounded by and interact with 20,000 people the same age as us for the rest of our lives.” As I was walking toward the Paul Miller Journalism and Broadcasting building this morning, the words engraved on the pillars of the walkway to the Student Union caught my eye. I had never paid much attention to these engravings, but for some reason today I stopped and tried to take it all in. “Proud and Immortal, Bright Shines Your Name. Oklahoma State, We
Herald Your Fame. Ever You’ll Find Us, Loyal and True, To Our Alma Mater, OSU.” I’ve heard the alma mater countless times at different sporting events, but it has yet to resonate with me as much as it did reading the words on the pillars on one of my final days as a college student. It feels strange to think about not being in college anymore. Not moving back to Stillwater in August. Not going to class or staying up late to study or write papers. But the future is exciting, and though I have absolutely no idea what

my future holds (I hope some of you all can relate), I’ve realized that it’s OK to not have your entire life figured out when you graduate from college. When I got to Stillwater my freshman year, I thought I would have everything figured out when it came time to leave this place. These final days have given me a chance to reflect and appreciate my time as a student at OSU. I want to end this letter to the class of 2019 with a piece of advice. It’s something I wish I would’ve heard when I was a freshman, but I think it’s important to realize
that your path now will not necessarily be your path in 10 or 20 years. Our dreams are constantly expanding, evolving and changing course. Whatever your dream is now, it will likely change, and that’s OK. Embrace the change, don’t be afraid of failure, work hard, be kind and amazing things will come your way.
