Two gaming chairs, a pair of controllers, a 50-inch monitor, a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox One sit side-byside in a small corner of the Competitive Sports office.

This setup represents the baby steps for esports at Oklahoma State University.

This spring, esports is making its debut as one of the sports offered within OSU’s intramural program.

Seven video games are featured in the competition, including “FIFA,” “NBA 2k19,” “Madden 19,” “Overwatch,” “League of Legends,” “Fortnite” and “Rocket League.” There are about 100 players registered.

Sylvain Tchaptchet, a graduate assistant with OSU competitive sports, said it took 14 months of research and preparing to bring esports to the OSU campus.

“This whole process actually started in November 2017,” Tchaptchet said. “It has been over a year now that we have been talking about doing researches, looking for facilities on campus.”

Tchaptchet took the coordinator role with the university’s competitive sports program in Aug. 2017. As an MONDAY, MARCH 11, 2019

intramural coordinator, he is tasked with expanding the recreational program and attracting new patrons to Colvin Recreation Center along with organizing, scheduling and supervising matches. When he took the position, Tchaptchet realized there was an unchartered territory that the program hadn’t ventured into.

“We are trying to find a new way to engage the students, and a lot of stuff we do in recreation is very much about sports and the physical aspect of recreation,” Tchaptchet said. “Sometimes we forget that as department of wellness, recreation is about overall function of the body. It is also about the emotion aspect.”

Tchaptchet said he advocated for the introduction of esports to strengthen the social aspect of Competitive Sports.

“I think for me, what I feel that egaming brings that social aspect of recreation into our department,” Tchaptchet said. “There are people on campus that participate and play video games already, and we want ... them to be involved in our recreation. Egaming is to be the next step of our recreation, and I want Oklahoma State not to be left behind. I want us to be ahead of the curve so I want to

OSU is not ahead of the curve in esports nationally. Varsity collegiate esports began in 2014 when Robert Morris University in Illinois became the first university to announce a scholarship-sponsored League of Legends team. Since then, the scene has expanded to include 125 programs and a national governing body.

The University of Oklahoma launched its esports program in Nov. 2017, which involves more than 250 members. Five schools in Texas have established esports teams.

One, the University of North Texas, cultivated Tchaptchet’s idea.

“UNT actually has an esports varsity team,” Tchaptchet said. “They have a coordinator that specifically dedicated to egaming. So, they are ahead of the curve in terms of esports. We

want to follow their footsteps.”

Tchaptchet contacted Cameron Milam, a North Texas recreation esports coordinator, to help him start the program. Milam oversees a program with about 250 participants and launched an official varsity team that competes in various “League of Legends,” “Hearthstone,” “Overwatch” and “Heroes of the Storm” tournaments.

“Whenever Sylvain

reached out to me, he was looking to the start of some sort of esports intramural program,” Milam said. “I kind of gave him the options, whether it is an onsite tournament or an online thing where he only needed to create the bracket and let him determine what the best program for Oklahoma State is.”

The university has a media library room, also known as The Nest, that has 15 gaming computers. Students can book a time slot to play video games, similar to checking out books. The university hosts on-site tournaments, with players coming to either the rec center or the media library to play competitively, often in front of passionate crowds.

To be eligible for Editor‑In‑ Chief, the applicant must be a student on the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University, be in good aca‑ demic standing (i.e., not on academic probation), have a grade point average of not less than 2.5, and have com‑ pleted at least 60 hours to‑ ward a degree. Applicant must show evidence of hav‑ ing worked one semester writing for The O’Colly. Students serving as an Editor‑in‑Chief may take up to 6 credit hours of independent study in consultation and approval of their major advisor.

An internship on a newspa‑ per in a newsroom capacity may be substituted for one semester of service on The O’Colly. The internship must meet the requirements of the School of Media and Strate‑ gic Communications’ current internship course.

Like “Pretty Girls Like Trap Music,” 2 Chainz weaves an overarching narrative throughout but this time the songs deal with problems facing the African-American community in the United States. At the end of the opening track, “Forgiven,” 2 Chainz says, “You know them love black boys’ strength/ But don’t love black boys,” showing the racial duality of a country that may love what an individual can do and provide without loving the individual. He continues crafting this message throughout the album. He gives accounts of dealing drugs in the past on tracks such as “Statute of Limitations.” On “I Said Me,” 2 Chainz gives a heartbreak-

ing account of how a negative perception of the black community shaped him and the decisions he made as a youth.

Rap or Go to the League is arguably the best album in 2 Chainz discography.

The production is the typical high-quality trap stylings one would expect from him, featuring star producers like Pharrell and 9th Wonder. 2 Chainz does a fantastic job weaving his social conscious theme into an enjoyable trap album with no duds on the track list.
