It’s probably uncommon to remember the entirety of your 21st birthday, but I doubt I’ll ever forget mine.

I woke up Thursday, answered a few birthday texts and Facebook posts and got ready for what would become one of the most bizarre days I’ve ever had.

The ensuing tale is one of triumph, heartbreak, a $20 parking ticket and pure athletic dominance.

(Just kidding about that last one, by the way)

Judging by the headline of this story, you might wonder why it’s taken so long for this story to reach your newsfeed.

Arena now reside in my C-League intramural team (shout out to the O’Colleagues).

When I woke up, I had zero intentions (or chance) of making the team, but I thought, “What better way to spend my 21st birthday than trying out for the Oklahoma State team?”

Ironically, coach Boynton and I share the same birthday and I’m sure he was just as thrilled as I was for tryouts.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of my quest to collegiate basketball glory, I want give a breakdown of my athletic

prowess so you can get a better idea of how I stacked up against some of my fellow ballers at tryouts.

I used to play an unhealthy amount of Humongous Entertainment’s Backyard Sports video games when I was younger, and I imagine if I were a virtual backyard baller my stats would look something like this.

A couple of these ratings are a bit generous, and the player portrait is actually of Marky “Cootie” DuBois, but you probably couldn’t tell the difference.

“Zach learned the game of basketball by tossing pumpkins into the garbage can out back. While he doesn’t have the best looking jumper, he can still get the job done in the paint.”

I spent way too long working on this in Photoshop, and it looks like my graphic design skills are on par with my skills on the court.

Now that you can visualize my skills on the court, let’s hoop (after we get our physicals, of course).

One of the not-so-glamorous parts of trying out to be a college hooper is having to get a physical. Along with being a full-time student at OSU, participants were required to have an updated sports physical from within the past six months, proof of health insurance and a sickle cell test.

This was likely one of the biggest deterrents, but I was impressed at how many people were willing to subject themselves to the life of a lab rat for half the day in hopes of one day making the practice squad and getting cool gear (probably).

Before Thursday, my last sports physical was senior year of high school when I was on the varsity football team. (Notice how I didn’t write “played football.” Most of that season was spent eating Starburst on the sideline and seeing how long I could go without putting my helmet on during practice.)

I went to the University Health Center a little after 1 p.m. and parked in the staff parking lot across from the Colvin because I enjoy see-

ing the white, $20 love note OSU parking services leaves on my windshield when I park in the wrong lot (that’s how you know I’m an OSU student, always complaining about parking).

When I entered the waiting room, I was surprised to see other guys actually fulfilling the requirements. Several talked about how they were skipping labs and classes because they wanted to try out more than they wanted to sit through lecture (which probably isn’t saying much).

We split up into eight teams of six or seven guys for half-court games, which meant someone had to sit out and sub in. We played shirts and skins, make-it-take-it, first to three wins and every bucket is worth one. This was the most fun part of the tryout by far. My team lost three out of its four games and I touched the ball probably four times. We probably would’ve lost the fourth, too, if I were playing.

Once the tryouts ended, I left GIA and headed back to the O’Colly newsroom and helped finish putting the paper together around 8 p.m. then went to the Strip to celebrate my birthday and brief college athletic career.

This was one of the more obscure birthdays I’ve ever had and I can’t imagine a situation that will match it.

Maybe when I turn 30 I’ll try out for the Philadelphia Eagles like Vince Papale in “Invincible.”

Meaning of Bedlam, responsibilities grow for Likekele H allie Hart, S taf f R epo rter , @ halliehart

Isaac Likekele is ready for a second chance at Bedlam.

Likekele, a freshman starting guard on the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team, had a limited role in his first matchup against Oklahoma.

Early foul trouble and a lack of concentration kept him on the bench for most of the game, but Wednesday, he will have another opportunity to compete against the Sooners.

The Cowboys face OU at 8 p.m. in Gallagher-Iba Arena, and Likekele’s mindset about Bedlam has shifted.

Likekele, from Arling-

ton, Texas, experienced the ruthless rivalry for the first time when he stepped into the Lloyd Noble Center on Jan. 5.

“I knew the importance,” Likekele said. “I just didn’t feel the importance. Everybody else, when they felt it, I didn’t really feel it.”

Likekele played for only six minutes, his fewest at OSU. He committed a pair of fouls in the first three minutes and contributed two points.

The Sooners stormed past the Cowboys 74-64.

“My mind wasn’t in the right place,” Likekele said. “I wasn’t focused that day.”

rivalry is more meaningful, and that isn’t the only way he is changing. He is learning how to play with maturity, avoiding costly fouls and sustaining energy through lengthy stretches.

As a consistent starter on a team of nine, he has no choice.

Without Weathers, Likekele is the only Cowboy who plays primarily point guard. Boynton said he added five or six players to the group after open walk-on tryouts Thursday, but he doesn’t know if they’ll have roles outside practice sessions.

With few substitute options, Likekele and Yor Anei, a freshman starting forward,

face increased pressure to prevent foul trouble.

“Youth is out of the window,” Boynton said. “At this point, they’re pretty seasoned.

They’ve played a lot. They’ve experienced a lot, and now it’s just a matter of continuing to get better and to now start producing on a consistent basis.”

Cameron McGriff, a junior forward and OSU captain, said Likekele and Anei are handling the situation well.

“It’s not anything that someone as a freshman would just be used to at the middle of the season, to jump up and be asked to play as many minutes as they are,” McGriff said. “And I think

they have the great mindset to complete this challenge.”

OSU enters Bedlam after a 72-59 road loss to Iowa State on Saturday.

Although the Cowboys fell to 8-10 overall and 2-4 in the Big 12, they debuted zone defensive formations that helped them save energy.

“Whenever we throw that zone out there or go back to man and then throw a different zone out there, it really feels like it makes the offense on the other side think and really just gives them a different look every time,” Likekele said.

OU will arrive in Stillwater aiming to recover from a loss to Texas in Austin. The Soon-

ers stand at 13-5, 2-4.

The Cowboys defeated OU in their past two battles at Gallagher-Iba Arena. As Likekele prepares for his first Bedlam matchup in front of a home crowd, he understands the hype.

“Now, I can really feel the importance of the rivalry,” Likekele said. “It was a learning experience the first time around, so it’s gonna be interesting to see what happens the second time.”

Review: ‘The WIZRD’ offers soul-baring rap Zach Go sh or n , S taf f R epo rter @ o c olly

After a relatively quiet 2018, Future starts 2019 with his seventh studio album, “Future Hndrxx Presents: The WIZRD.” Future returns with his signature trap flows over beats from several well-known producers including Southside, Tay Keith, TM88 and Wheezy. Within the first few songs, it is apparent the quality of this album is a step above the quality of his previous work.

The first track, “Never Stop,” kicks the album off with an introspective theme. He raps about getting shot in his youth and growing up in his Uncle

Rico’s basement, the birthplace of the legendary Atlanta rap duo Outkast.

Introspection is a major point of this album. “Temptation,” a Tay Keith-produced track that plays out like a modern trap ballad, shows Future expressing the struggles he faces within his lifestyle.

The pain in his voice is apparent as he croons about drug problems and lost friends.

The overall theme of the album comes to fruition on the 12th track, “Krazy but True.” As Future calls out the influence he has over his peers and demands respect, he repeats the line, “it’s crazy, but it’s true.” It is that line that flawlessly expresses the feeling every song on “The

Future’s ability to speak about insane, real-life situations is what

makes his music so addicting.

Growing up in Atlanta and being in the basement where Outkast was created left an impact on Future. His sound is an obvious modern interpretation of the stories that Andre 3000 and Big Boi would spit on the beats that Future’s uncle crafted. The Atlanta sound is most apparent on “Unicorn Purp,” where Future teams up with fellow Atlanta rappers Young Thug and Gunna for a banger to heat the same streets that Future grew up on.

However, it isn’t just what Future is saying, it’s how he is saying it. Future has the unique ability to express his emotions so strongly in his voice that you can feel it. On tracks like “Promise U That,” “Baptiize” and “Ain’t

Coming Back,” Future is releasing his pain through the tracks.

On the other end, “F&N,” “Call the Coroner” and “Faceshot” are Future unleashing his anger.

Future’s ability to express his emotions so clearly in his raps sets him apart from his peers.

“The WIZRD” is Future baring his soul to the world. It is a balance of deep cut tracks and chart-climbing bangers. It’s a testament of the modern rockstar lifestyle that so many rappers live in. It’s crazy, but it’s true.
