In today’s educational climate, it is almost impossible for someone to go to college without financial assistance.

Multiple students earn scholarships every year, but this is usually not enough to cover the growing costs of higher education in America.

Congresswoman Kendra Horn, House Representative for the fifth district of Oklahoma, is sponsoring and helping write legislation to tackle the student loan debt crisis many current and former students face.

“Student loans and student debt is something than affects so many of us,” Horn said. “Not only those of us who have it or had it

or anticipate having to take it out, but it is an issue for people, for individuals and it is an economic issue for so many. Over the course of the last couple of decades across this country, and Oklahoma is certainly no exception, we have been a part of this. The cost of a higher education at a public four-year institution has more than doubled …

Now we have $1.6 trillion across this country in outstanding student loan debt, and the average Oklahoman has $26,000.”

Horn is not a stranger to student loan debt. She had to make difficult decisions straight out of law school to support herself and pay off her loans.

hill as a staffer, I was trying to figure out how I was going to pay the rent and pay my student loans,” Horn said.

The bills proposed are the first steps Horn is wanting to take to make the cost of higher education more affordable.

The GRACE Act (Guaranteeing Respite After College Ends Act) – H.R. 3792 The GRACE Act prevents interest from starting on students’ loans until six months after graduation or when a student leaves school.

Many of the complaints people have when they graduate from college is how interest on loans piles up to the point where, in some cases, people are paying more than three times the original amount of the loan. This is

not abnormal for students, especially those who go on to graduate degree programs.

The idea is to save students “tens of thousands of dollars” for borrowers whose interest would have started immediately, even when students might not have jobs immediately out of school.

The SLASH Act (Student Loan Accrual Support and Help Act) – H.R. 3793 Student loan companies can charge more than 10 percent interest on many loans. This bill “slashes” interest rates by tying them to a low interest treasury rate, limits rate growth over time and caps interest rates at 5 percent.

from taking advantage of students who want to further their educations. High interest rates often result in tens of thousands of dollars in additional costs.

The Better Service to Borrowers Act of 2019 – H.R. 3519 This piece of legislation will simplify the language in loan documents so people understand what they are borrowing, how much it will cost and what their options are for paying back the loans.

The Public Service Pays Off Act – H.R. 4113 This act encourages public service by providing incremental loan forgiveness instead of requiring 10 years of payments before individuals are eligible for the program. More than 40,000

people have applied for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, but only 206 people have had loans forgiven.

Horn has also cosponsored legislation allowing individuals to discharge student loan debt on bankruptcy, just like all other debt. Other legislation she has cosponsored allows students to use Pell Grants on career and technical education and would give students borrowers tax relief on student loan payments.

This legislation is under debate in Congress. Hasan Minhaj spoke to Congress about student loans during the past Wednesday, and hearings about student loan debt are occurring throughout this congressional meeting.

Daton Fix has had a standout year, and he isn’t done.

After a second-place finish in the 2019 NCAA National Wrestling Championship, Fix has all his attention on his Senior World Team Wrestling Championship debut in Kazakhstan.

Fix is the first Cowboy to earn a spot on the Senior World Wrestling team since Oklahoma State wrestling coach John Smith made the team in 1991, winning his fourth gold in the 62-kilogram weight class.

Fix won his spot on Team USA at 57 kilograms after beating former Iowa wrestler Thomas Gilman in a 2-out-of-3 series at Final X, winning the final bout 6-3. Fix lost to Gilman at last year’s Final X. “It was a dream come true,” Fix said. “I was very close the year before - I made it to Final X and lost - but just to get back to that point and break through and make the world team was a dream come true.

I was just really grateful for everybody who has supported me and helped me get to where I am.

“I felt like that was

kind of not only for me, but for my family and my coaches and for everybody. For Oklahoma State wrestling … it was a big deal for me and my team.”

Since winning Final X, Fix has been training around the world, practicing in Stillwater with OSU’s coaching staff and attending training camps in Colorado and Germany with the World Team. Team USA finishes its training in Kazakhstan.

Fix has been training with is Olympic gold medalist and four-time world gold medalist Jordan Burroughs, a notable member of the World Team and some-

one Fix has looked up to “for a long time.”

“I can remember being a 12 or 13-year-old kid watching him win world titles,” Fix said. “Now, I’m on the same team as him, and I get the opportunity to wrestle for a world title as well. Just to be in that position, I am grateful for it and am definitely not taking it for granted.”

The 57-kilogram bracket begins Thursday, and medal rounds will be Friday. Although Fix is excited to wrestle, his game plan remains the same as it always has been: to wrestle his way.

“I don’t have anything to lose, really,” Fix said.

“I’m a young kid, and I

just want to go out there and let it fly. Most of the time, whenever I go out there and just wrestle my kind of match, then good things happen.

That’s the game plan.”

With the 2020 Olympic Games coming up, a lot of questions still remain as to which collegiate wrestlers will take Olympic redshirts to compete in Tokyo.

Cornell wrestler and two-time NCAA national champion Yianni Diakomihalis announced he will take an Olympic redshirt, drastically changing the landscape of the 141-pound NCAA weight class. Fix said he does not know yet if he will join Yianni in

taking an Olympic redshirt for the 2019-2020 season.

“After the world championships, I’m sure that me and my coaches, coach Smith and the rest of the staff, will sit down and have a real conversation about it,” Fix said.

Fix said he is nothing but grateful for the opportunity to be on the world team, and knows he wouldn’t be where he is today without the Cowboy family.

“I just want to thank Oklahoma State for supporting me,” Fix said. “I want to make everybody proud, and I’m hoping to bring back a gold medal.”

The Seretean Center for the Performing Arts is always buzzing with performances, especially as the OSU Opera begins rehearsing for an exciting season of performances.

A hidden gem, the OSU Opera consists of 35 music students studying classic opera, modern opera, and musical theatre and is directed by professors April Golliver-Mohiuddin, Steve Sanders, and Megan BarthArgo.

ing season of performances.

However, this season will have multiple performance dates, two different operas, and the McKnight Center’s debut, unlike previous seasons. Though the performances will occur in various spots, the countless hours the students spend rehearsing takes place in the Seretean Center for the Performing Arts.

Junior Carly Clayton and senior Jonathan Rhoades sing for the OSU Opera and are enthusiastic about the season ahead, especially for their upcoming Musical Review in October.

“The opera program is really looking up,” Rhoades

said. “We’ve got our second annual Musical Theatre review on October 4th, and in the spring we’ve got two one-act performances that we will do. The first one is Down in the Valleyby Kurt Weill and the second is Speed Dating Tonightby Michael Ching, so you really won’t want to miss either one!”

The Musical Review will include a wide array of show tunes, Broadway classics and new musical theatre hits, ranging from The Sound of Musicto Waitress.

“It will be a lot of favorites, like classical musical theatre that people will

know,” Clayton said. “We’ll have stuff from the Golden Age, we’re doing a Phantom [of the Opera] set, Les Mis— it’s a lot of stuff that people will recognize and I think will really enjoy.”

Last year’s review focused on American composer Leonard Bernstein in celebration of his 100th birthday. This year will be similar becuase cast members are interactive in the space and with the audience, and there is a noticeable mix of different styles from various musicals.

“You can expect a lot of engagement with the audience. We typically use the entire place,” Carly de-

scribed. “Not just the stage, but also all the aisles. It will totally be an immersive experience.”

In addition to the review, the rehearsals for the two operas are well underway.

They will be performed at the brand new McKnight Center for the Performing Arts in February. This is the first time the opera will have the privilege to perform in the building. Not only is this their debut at the McKnight, the size of the company is much larger and has more music than years past.

“We’ve just been rocking and rolling! It’s been insane how fast we’ve worked,”

Clayton gushed. “We have a lot of it off book, just tying a few loose ends.”

Rhoades is equally excited about the coming season and people by his side.

“People came in ready to work,” Rhoades added.

“Having that mentality has just been really tremendous in improving our learning speed.”

The OSU Opera will perform its Musical Review at the Sheerar Museum on October 4th at 7:30 pm.

Finally becoming who she wants to be: lessons we can learn from an artist Sh e y enne M i tch e ll

While growing up, Sharon Sudduth never knew what she wanted to be.

Sudduth, a featured artist at the OSU Art Festival during the past weekend, found herself filling many different roles: a journalist for a year, an interior designer for a few more years and then a leader in the Kansas Chamber of Commerce until 2012.

By then, Sudduth was out of her 30s and still hadn’t become who she wanted to be when she grew up, but her dream was to become an artist.

Her journey as an artist started when she was young.

“I’ve always been artistic,” Sudduth said.

“I took all the classes I could take in high school. I went to college on a scholarship for one year in art. And then I switched my major because I went to a college that didn’t have a good art program. Plus, people said to me, ‘You can’t make a living with your art.’ So, I believed them. Unfortunately.”

In 2012, Sudduth’s husband’s job required them to move to Oklahoma, and she seized this opportunity for a fresh start and started painting. It was her de-

termination that brought her to where she is today.

“I got up every day to paint,” Sudduth said.

“And taught myself how to paint. I had never painted up until that point.”

She started with working to broaden her

horizons as an artist.

Before then, Sudduth had only painted nature, so she decided to push herself to paint human faces. She set a goal to paint 100 portraits. Her theory was if you do something 100 times, you will get good at it.

revealed Sudduth’s preserving attitude. She thrives on challenging herself, and it’s how she has become successful.

“With each canvas, I wanted to push myself to paint something that was uncomfortable,” Sudduth said.

Sudduth had another goal tied to the number 100.

After reading a post from a blogger, she has been determined to receive 100 rejections this year, either from art festivals or from other shows.

“The thing about getting 100 rejections,” Sudduth said, “(is) one of your offers is bound to be accepted. You

have to keep putting yourself out there.”

Sudduth is living her dream, but her journey to do so did not happen overnight. Sudduth’s determination and dedication to her passions led her to her career.

Her lessons? Challenge oneself. Fail often. Never stop trying and pushing through.

And above all, remember this life is a journey.

We might never know what we want to be when we grow up, and that is OK. “We all just have to keep in mind,” Sudduth said. “With confidence and perseverance, the only way to go is up.”

Rudolph went 12-19 for 112 yards, including two touchdowns and an intercepted pass, which bounced off the hands of Donte Moncrief. The former Cowboy will get his first career start in the NFL this week as Roethlisberger is out for the season.

Justice Hill, Running Back, Baltimore Ravens Justice Hill had a less exciting week two but is continuing to find success no matter how small. Hill had two touches in a 23-17 win over the Cardinals. He had just one carry for four yards and a 10-yard catch.

Chris Carson, Running Back, Seattle Seahawks Chris Carson had a disappointing start this week for the Seahawks.

The running back had two fumbles while facing former Cowboys Rudolph and Washington. Despite

the slow start, Carson made a fourth-down pickup that sealed Seattle’s win.

James Washington, Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh Steelers The Pittsburgh Steelers are providing big opportunities for former Cowboys.

James Washington played alongside former teammate Mason Rudolph against the Seahawks this week.

He had two receptions for 23 yards but no touchdown receptions from Rudolph, much to the dismay of OSU and Steelers fans.
