Ludwig van Beethoven has been dead for 191 years, but Oklahoma State University’s Symphonic Orchestra brings one of his most famous pieces to life this week.

The orchestra is presenting Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, along with scores from Gioachino Rossini and Charles Gounod, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Seretean Center for Performing Arts.

“Beethoven’s Fifth,” also referred to as the victory symphony since World War II, was created during a troubling time in Beethoven’s life.

During the early 1800s, the Napoleonic wars were in full swing. Beethoven, then in his

30s, faced increasing hearing loss along with family issues. “(Beethoven) is the person that everyone thinks of as someone who is wrestling with demons while overcoming societal pressures and trying to stretch the limits and push boundaries,” said Thomas Dickey, OSU’s director of orchestral studies. “You see this really clearly with the ‘Fifth Symphony.’”

Dickey’s plan for this year’s performance itinerary was to have the orchestra perform a concert at least every four weeks. Beethoven’s “Fifth Symphony” is the first of 10 performances this school year.

Each piece played at every concert is carefully selected, and “Beethoven’s Fifth” is no exception.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for students and $10 for general admission.

“I’m very excited for this concert, and I’ve been doing my best to try and promote it,” Dickey said. “I’m proud of the orchestra, I love these pieces and I know the audience is going to love them … This is a rare concert to hear in Oklahoma, and I know people will want to come out for such a well-recognized symphony.”

Oklahoma State University has more than 230,000 living alumni.

Friday afternoon, the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association honored seven of these alumni with one of its most prestigious accolades: the Distinguished Alumni Award.

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented every fall to OSU alumni who have gone above and beyond in their careers and communities. Since the award’s creation in 1977, it has honored 253 people.

This year’s recipients were Isabel Baker, class of

’54 and ’72; Michael Carolina, class of ’71; Anita Hill, class of ’77; Ann Oglesby, class of ’87; Bill Self, class of ’85 and ’89; Stephen Tuttle, class of ’73 and Diane Tuttle, class of ’85.

The honorees have various backgrounds and professions, ranging from teachers to lawyers to entrepreneurs.

During OSU President Burns Hargis’ opening remarks, he said this year’s group of recipients was one of the most diverse yet.

What the honorees have in common is that they have embodied what it means to be an OSU Cowboy.

process allowed the Alumni Association to honor some of the most distinguished members of the Cowboy family. “(The Distinguished Alumni) is a very elite and prestigious group to be recognized and to be a part of,” Carter said.

The award recipients said they were grateful for the honor.

“I’m so shocked that I would be included in this very prestigious group,” Baker said.

Many of the honorees shared Baker’s sentiment.

They said they did not feel they deserved such an award. Several reminisced on their time at OSU and commented on how their love for the university has

only grown.

“This is still home,” Self said.

Several of the recipients talked about how they wouldn’t be where they are today without Oklahoma State. They shared how proud they are to be a part of the Cowboy family.

“This great university is great because of the people in this audience, because of all of the alumni who have come before and all who will come after,” Carolina said. “We should all be proud.”

“White Boy Rick” is a tale of deception, hard knocks and a life of anything but glamour.

This flick declines to focus on the glorification of organized crime that is usually found in movies. The audience gets only fleeting glimpses of the fruits of White Boy Rick’s labor throughout the film.

Instead, the movie focuses on the crack cocaine epidemic during the 1980s in Detroit and the hysteria the Ronald Reagan administration induced. The film follows Rick

(Richie Merritt), 15, and his family as they navigate life during this time. His father (Matthew McConaughey) is a small-time arms dealer, and his sister (Bel Powley) is an addict.

The dark and gritty reality of their lifestyle is on display throughout the movie and accents the fact that poor Ricky never had a chance.

McConaughey plays his role with remarkable restraint. All elements combine to tell a poignant story about the dangers of drugs and the false glamour of organized crime. Writers also paint a picture of an unforgiving legal system put in place

to incarcerate nonviolent offenders as scapegoats for a larger problem.

“White Boy Rick” is a film that is as dark as they come, complete with the gritty realism of ‘80s Detroit.

The characters’ realization that getting ahead in life while starting out so far behind shows viewers that it might be impossible to not play dirty. Even when characters manage to find success, it is fleeting and not without consequences.

This should encourage those that may have had little or no relationship with God, but you can begin now, and develop it. Are you challenged? He rewards those who diligently seek him! Go for it!
