Homecoming week at Oklahoma State University is a time of celebration and festivities, but for some people, it is also a reminder of the tragedy and loss of life suffered three years ago.

Four people died and dozens more were injured after Adacia Chambers drove her car into the crowd at the annual homecoming parade on Oct. 24, 2015.

On Oct. 26 this year, many people came to Stillwater for the unveiling of the Stillwater Strong Memorial to honor the victims of the crash. Among those people was Leo Schmitz.

Schmitz is a longtime supporter of OSU. His two stepsons attended the university, and his wife is also a longtime fan. Schmitz, his wife Sharon, his stepson and his stepson’s wife were in the crowd when Chambers crashed into it. Schmitz said he’s lucky to be alive.

“We were standing there watching the parade, taking pictures, like everybody,” Schmitz said. “Within a split second, that’s when I went blank.

When they found me, they thought I was dead.”

Schmitz and his wife suffered injuries from the crash. Schmitz’s head was split open, his

left arm was crushed, the femur in his right leg was broken and his left leg was mutilated.

He was taken to the OU Trauma Center, where he was placed in an induced coma for three months to relieve his brain injuries. His left leg was amputated.

When he woke from the coma, he still didn’t have feeling in his left arm.

Three years later, Schmitz has learned to walk with a prosthetic leg and, through physical therapy, has almost regained full use of his arm. He said he’s grateful to be alive and credits many people with saving his life. Among these people are blood donors.

“I was one of the first victims that received blood on the helicopter,” Schmitz said.

“Once I was entered into the hospital, I received 27 units of blood. If it wasn’t for that and the donors, I wouldn’t be here.”

To Schmitz, blood donors are heroes. He said he’s forever grateful to them and the Oklahoma Blood Institute for helping save his life.

From Nov. 5 to Nov. 9, OBI’s Bedlam Blood Battle will take place on the OU and OSU campuses. The Blood Battle is an annual competition between OU and OSU students to see which school can donate more blood. OSU has won five of the eight years

the competition has occurred, but OU won during the past year.

OBI is the state’s nonprofit blood provider. It supplies about 90 percent of the hospitals in the state and provided the blood used to save Schmitz’s life.

Kenda Burnham, the recruitment director for OBI, said it’s important to remember one never knows when or where tragedy will strike. They try to be prepared, but it comes down to people going out and donating blood.

Three veteran captains anchored the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team, but a freshman emerged as the top scorer.

Isaac Likekele stood behind the right corner of the arc and let go of the ball with a slight flourish of his hands.

It floated along a smooth path through the air and into the hoop, adding Likekele’s last points in the Cowboys’ 80-59 exhibition game victory against Ouachita Baptist on Sunday afternoon in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

18 points in his first outing as a Cowboy. He and fellow freshman Yor Anei joined junior captains Cameron McGriff, Lindy Waters and Thomas Dziagwa in the starting lineup. Likekele said nerves filled him as he anticipated playing on Eddie Sutton Court, though he maintained his composure.

But Mike Boynton, OSU’s coach, had faith in him.

After a shaky scrimmage against Wichita State, Likekele was the first player who walked into his coach’s office looking for ways to improve, Boynton said.

“He was trying to figure out how he can get better, what he needs to learn, and that’s a big step,” Boynton

said. “His (exhibition) performance, again, doesn’t surprise me.”

Likekele joined three other Cowboys who scored in double figures against the Tigers.

McGriff and Waters added 15 points each, and Maurice Calloo, a freshman forward from Windsor, Canada, tallied 12.

“Mo (Calloo) may be our most naturally gifted player, just in terms of the different skills that he encompasses,” Boynton said. “He can really shoot the basketball.

He can handle it well. His issue right now is, like a lot of freshmen, is he doesn’t have the ability yet to focus for a long period of time.”

tion game to give freshmen playing opportunities and to experiment with various lineups. Less than three minutes into the game, he swapped Anei out for freshman Kentrevious Jones at center, and that marked the beginning of constant substitutions. Luke Major, a

freshman guard who played for homeschool team OKC Storm, contributed four points during his 12 minutes and 26 seconds in the game. Major is a walk-on, but Boynton didn’t discount the idea of putting him on the court in regular-season matchups.

“I don’t see why not,” Boynton said. “He’s got great length. … I’ve got confidence in him, and I think his teammates do as well.”

As freshmen showed sparks of potential, experienced leaders guided the Cowboys. McGriff crashed the glass, accumulating 12 rebounds for his first double-double at OSU. Dziagwa opened scoring with a layup and a free throw, and Waters led the Cowboys in 3-pointers with three.

Look at the wonderful promise that James shares with us about persevering in faith and thanksgiving; “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” (Ja.1:12 NIV) What pleases God, in difficulties of all kinds, is to trust him which leads to obedience, but when we doubt God’s love and faithfulness in trials; many times this will lead to disobedience. We don’t trust therefore we don’t follow! Then we miss out on God’s will and blessing for our lives. God overlooks this in the beginning of our walk with him, but he wants us to learn and go his way, then receive all he has for us.
