In his 27 years of experience, Clary had seen two similar cases like Milo’s. And there was a way to help Milo get his paws right side up. But would it work?

Clary and his team used a procedure that cut into Milo’s elbow and realigned the bones.

To make sure the bones held while Milo recovered, a pin was put in place to keep the align-

ment. For two and a half weeks, Milo was put in an orange front body splint, complete with some Pistol Pete stickers for decoration, to stabilize the repairs made.

had to be carried everywhere by Jennie and her husband Jason. Any moisture on the splint would result in a medical emergency and for the Hays family living an hour away from

During the healing process, the removal of the splint and pins was only the beginning of the next stage. Next came challenging rehabilitative care to get Milo walking and playing like a puppy.

While Milo, the dog with upside down paws, continues to dominate headlines, his case is one of many success stories coming out of Oklahoma State University’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences.

Here are just a few more: Egg-celent save Someone brought in a turtle that veterinarians assumed had been hit by a vehicle. They were unable to save the turtle but found the turtle was pregnant, carrying eggs.

The mother couldn’t be saved, but the eggs were removed and placed in an incubator and eventually seven hatched.

The baby turtles were released last Friday at Sanborn Lake by children associated with the OSU foundation.

The veterinarians put in place a tracheal stent, but the dog was still struggling to breath and decided bronchial stents needed to be put in place as well. where they had experience in this area, but the owner insisted to have the procedure done in house. The vets learned the procedure and were successfully able to place the bronchial stent in a noninvasive procedure designed to lessen anesthesia, exposure and recovery time.

Research, too It can be easy to forget that OSU’s Center for Veterinary Health Sciences is also a research institution. Several veterinarians are collaborating on a study using focused ultrasound research. They are looking at how it could be used to treat certain types of cancers found in animals.

UP NEXT: This summer, the O’Colly will be taking a positionby-position breakdown look at what the OSU football team will look like for the 2019 season. This is the Sixth installment of our series “Scouting Ahead.”

Oklahoma State reloads at running back after Justice Hill left early for the NFL Draft and J.D. King transferred closer to home.

Impressively, plenty remains.

Last season coach John Wozniak’s crew produced the Cowboys’ best rushing season since 2012. Wozniak’s recruiting again looks to restock the position, which now features a star running back in Chuba Hubbard, as well as more talented running backs behind him.

Hubbard looms as the starter. He has elusive speed when he gets to the second and third levels of the defense. Hubbard also has some weaknesses, too, such as pass blocking and a tendency to dance instead of getting downhill.

Still, last year Hubbard averaged six yards a carry and was a viable option out of the backfield in the receiving game, with a career high of five catches in games against Oklahoma and West Virginia when Hill was out with an injury.

season progressed and had his two best games against Oklahoma and West Virginia, rushing for 104 and 134 yards. His ability to make defenders miss is similar to Hill and fans should expect the same Hubbard as they saw late in the season, if not a more polished product.

Behind Hubbard, LD Brown returns as a solid backup option. And look out for redshirt freshman Jahmyl Jeter and first-year players Dezmon Jackson and Deondrick Glass to make a push and battle to compliment Chuba Hubbard in the backfield.

Brown had 27 carries for 175 yards on the season, but 77 of those yards came against Missouri State on one run for a touchdown. Brown has game experience, but never got a lot of carries due to King, Hill and Hubbard being ahead of him on the depth chart. Brown does have great speed, but we have yet to see him when he is getting 10 to 12 carries a game and getting significant playing time.

Even when Hill got injured Brown did not play much because Hubbard had already taken over the starting role and got almost all the carries after Hill’s injury against Oklahoma. Brown and the others will be in a tough battle for the backup role during fall camp.

Jeter impressed coaches during practices as a redshirting freshman last season, after arriving on the heels of a productive career at San Antonio’s Brennan High School, where he ran for 4,008 yards and 48 touchdowns over his

final three seasons.

Jackson made his impression in the spring, gaining praise from Hubbard during the spring.

“He’s talented,” Hubbard told reporters. “He’s strong.

He’s one of the brothers.

He’ll be good.”

Last season for Hutchinson Community College, Jackson rushed for over 1, 200 yards and averaged 110.5 yards per game. Jackson holds the experience edge in the battle for the backup job.

There are not much highlights on him from junior college, but from what’s there, he looks to be a power back who can also outrun the defense.

In highlights, Glass looks like a Cowboy running back already, always driving his feet and willing to run over defenders. Glass also looks to be a power back with good speed, but maybe not as fast as Hubbard or Brown when he gets to the second and third level of defenses.

With Hubbard locking down the starting job for running back, it will be a fun and exciting battle behind him to see who will complement Hubbard in the backfield for the 2019 season.

Matt Holliday joining brother on Cowboys’ baseball staff Staff Repo rt, @ o c olly

Oklahoma State’s baseball staff, already stacked with head coaching quality, now features some fresh big league appeal.

Matt Holliday, a Major League Baseball star as recently as 2017, joins his brother Josh’s staff as an assistant coach. Matt’s duties will be offensive development and outfield play, two areas in which he thrived.

A former MLB All-Star, Matt played 15 big league seasons during runs with the Colorado Rockies, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland A’s and New York Yankees.

During his career, which spanned 2004-18, he was a seven-time All-Star.

“Matt loves the game of baseball and has a passion for helping young men pursue their dreams both on the field and in life,” Josh said in announcing the hire Thursday.

Along with Josh, assistants Rob Walton and Marty Lees have also served as NCAA Division I head coaches. The addition of Matt, who once was committed to play football and baseball at OSU, before signing out of high school with the Rockies, offers a recent connection to the big leagues that should resonate with young players and recruits.

“With Rob, Marty and Matt, we have a coaching team established that will work together to recruit and develop players at the highest level,” Josh said. “Matt is a teacher, and his ability to articulate the movements and mindset of the swing is exceptional.”

“Matt’s expertise in hitting and outfield play will fit perfectly within our staff.

Our players will have the opportunity to learn from one of the finest offensive players in baseball history.”

Holliday played in 1,903 games during his career

and recorded a .299 batting average with 316 home runs, 468 doubles and 1,220 RBIs. He was a four-time Silver Slugger Award winner and helped lead the Cardinals to the 2011 World Series title.

“I’m excited to join the baseball staff at Oklahoma State, and I’m looking forward to the chance to help young men reach their potential in all areas of their lives,” Matt said.

“His calm, steady demeanor and knowledge of the game will be a tremendous asset for OSU,” said said Lance Berkman, former MLB All-Star and teammate of Holliday’s in St. Louis. “He is able to communicate hitting like few can and, more importantly, is someone that will have a far reaching positive impact on the players off the field.

“In short, if I had a son, I’d want him to be around Matt as much as possible.”

Review: The magical roar of “The Lion King” is lost to realism m egan hays , s taff r epo rt er @ o co lly

The king of childhood animal movies returns with a new look.

In Disney’s wave of live action remakes of their classic movies, “The Lion King” was given a new look and new voices to bring the movie back to a new generation and a sense of nostalgia to those who grew up with it.

While the revamping of the movie illustrates how far animation technology has come, some of the magic from the original is lost.

be described as a nature documentary meeting the plot of the classic Disney movie. The scenery in each scene is stunning and brings the setting of the original movie to striking realism that breathes life into the story as a whole. The animals were also amazingly realistic from wind bristled fur to small little natural gestures the real world animals would make.

When the camera came in for a close-up of the animals, it was almost impossible to tell that they were not real animals.

With that dedication to putting realism first, some of the charm of the animated animals were lost. Timon and Pumbaa lost some of the

cartoonish humor that acted as the comedic relief in the original movie. That doesn’t mean they didn’t have their moments, but a fan of the original would miss that aspect of their characters. With realism also comes resemblance. In the real world there aren’t a lot of ways to tell

lions apart from each other with a glance. This was only an issue in fight scenes when the camera would go for a wide shot. But don’t worry, Mufasa’s death is just as traumatic in near-real-life as it was in the cartoon feature.

part the casting was spot on. John Oliver as Zazu, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Beyonce as Nala were the perfect choice to bring those iconic characters back to life.

While their voice resembled the original voice actors in a way, they also brought their own characteristic style to the roles that would immortalize them as the characters for new viewers. The only issue classic fans might have would be with Donald Glover and his role as Simba. There were moments where it was obvious that he was voicing the main role of the character but on certain iconic lines, his voice just didn’t elicit the kind of response it should from the audience.

“The Lion King” remake does its job in bringing the beloved classic to new audiences and even a bit of nostalgia for those who grew up with the original. It is hard to compare this new version to the one so many are familiar with, but without that comparison the movie could stand with the other remakes.

When compared though, the demanding pursue of realism causes the movie to lose some of the magic the original had.
