Due to the broad subjects under the label of arts and sciences, the college has differ-

ent challenges to face as student educational demands change. Many of the general education requirements fall under the college, so many different majors need different things out of

those classes.

This is a concern of Provost Gary Sandefur.

“It is so critical for the rest of the university because most of the foundational courses, general educational

courses, are in arts and sciences,” Sandefur said, “so you want someone who can work well with the other dean and who takes into account not only the interest of their own college but also

“There are all different kinds of departments.

Chemistry is different than music,which is different than philosophy.

You don’t have to be an expert in all of those but you do have to have an understanding and willingness to learn about these different areas.”

Even with all of these challenges, the dean of the Honors College and the chair of the search committee, Keith Garbutt, said Krutz is up for the task.

“I think his track record as an administrator in particular, the work he did at the University of Oklahoma in improving retention and graduation rates was very impressive,” Garbutt said.

“As well as the work he’s done in general education, his breadth of experience across all sorts of different areas within the university as an administrator.”

As dean, Krutz will be expected to fulfill several roles.

“Really the dean is the leader of the college, they oversee everything from curriculum issues, student issues, faculty issues, the entire budget and fundraising for the college.” Mendez said.

“The dean is overseeing all of that so anything that is coming in and out of the college ultimately flows through the dean’s office.”

that will help him meet the expectations of the people in CAS as well as accomplish more than just maintaining the college.

“I do tend to look at the challenges and opportunities as I look at issues,” Krutz said.

“Part of the idea of improving student success and faculty impact is to allow a lot of creativity to bubble up. CAS is uniquely situated to spawn creativity because we have every part of higher ed within it.”

For Krutz, the dean should be focused on what can be done to help students and faculty succeed within the college.

“Faculty impact and especially student impact and student success, I think those just need to be the throughputs that a dean and senior leadership are thinking about at the university,” Kurtz said. “We need to think about how the programs we fund, envision and roll out move the needle in terms of student success and in terms of faculty being more impactful as instructors and as researchers.”

Sandefur appointed the search committee and worked with President Burns Hargis in making the final decision. He wants Krutz to succeed and to bring the college forward into the future.

“What I would advise him to do is to take some time to get to know the college and the people in it,” Sandefur said. “Not make any big

bold moves until he has a clear understanding of what’s going on, and I’m pretty sure that’s what he will do. You have to take the time to try and understand the culture and the traditions of his college but also the institution.”

It is only the beginning of Krutz’s time at OSU and while he has kept a box of his crimson and cream colors from OU, he’ll be working on his orange collection.

“It actually feels good to stake out on a new path to be honest,” Krutz said. “It feels new and exciting.”

Oklahoma State’s men up front across the offensive line offer experience... to an extent.

Johnny Wilson and Marcus Keyes provide leadership, while Teven Jenkins and Dylan Galloway have played significant roles in their careers as Cowboys. Still, OSU has to replace three starting linemen from a year ago and everyone else is unproven.

Galloway, a junior, played early last year at left tackle before taking over the starting job in week nine against Baylor. He should keep a starting job and help the young offensive lineman improve.

Jenkins, a redshirt junior, could fill another starting spot after playing 13 games at the tackle spots a year ago.

earned First-Team All-Big 12 honors as a sophomore and was Honorable Mention as a junior. Wilson, who started 12 games last fall, will be the vocal leader for the offensive line as the starting center.

The Cowboys will look to either walkon Ry Schneider, who earned spot duty a year ago, or one of the inexperienced lineman to grab a starting spot. OSU has young talent that redshirted last season that could be ready for a breakout, including Hunter Woodard, Hunter Anthony, Bryce Bray and Tyrese Williams.

New offensive line coach Charlie Dickey has a core group of guys to work with, but will have to teach the young guys and move them along so they are ready to start or see significant playing time in during the 2020 season.

The line will be tasked with opening running lanes for the running backs and protecting the yet-tobe-determined winner of the quarterback battle between redshirt senior Dru Brown and redshirt freshman Spencer Sanders.

ARLINGTON, Texas— A Monday spent at AT&T Stadium didn’t reveal anything earth shattering, but it did confirm some things that were already suspected.

Quarterbacks In an unsurprising move, Mike Gundy declined to name a starting quarterback at Big 12 Media Days.

Spencer Sanders, a redshirt freshman and former Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas, remains locked in a battle with redshirt senior and graduate transfer Dru Brown for the job.

Last year, when Brown and Sanders were in competition with Taylor Cornelius for the starting spot, Gundy chose Big 12 Media Days as the time to name his starter.

On Monday, he compared this position battle to those he’s had at quarterback in years past.

“I think if you look back at my history we have named guys at times when people didn’t think we were going to name a starter, because we felt like they earned the job, gave our team the best chance to be successful and win games,” Gundy said.

What was a little surprising was how he expressed at least a consideration of splitting time

between the two quarterbacks.

“Both guys on our team right now have worked hard,” Gundy said. “We haven’t had anybody go ahead and take the reins at this pick point. So we’re ready for them to split reps.”

Gundy praised Sean Gleeson, his new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, for his ability to coach signal callers.

Gundy went on to clarify that his team will run the same system.

Gundy said Gleeson is a hands-on recruiter and is building a good relationship with the rest of the coaching staff.

“He’s young,” Gundy said.

In the main press conference he responded to a question about Oklahoma’s recent dominance in the conference with a sarcastic diminishment of its quarterback play.

Former Oklahoma players Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield are the winners of the last two Heisman trophies.

“They’ve got good players,” Gundy said. “The last couple of years they’ve had average quarterback play and they’ve overcome it.”

Gundy also joked about the possibility of him cutting his mullet, which appeared longer than ever.

“Oh, I thought about actually getting a haircut yesterday, but it was Sunday and they were closed,” Gundy said. “So I decided to wing it…As long as it makes me look younger, if somebody said it makes you look old, I would probably cut it.”

Return of Les Miles Former OSU coach Les Miles is back in the league, coaching Kansas after taking a two-season break

from coaching. Miles went 28-21 as the Cowboys’ coach and is credited with laying the foundation for Mike Gundy to have the success he has had.

Miles was keen on talking about the present instead of the past when asked about his previous stint in the conference.

However, he did make the claim that in his judgment he is inheriting more talent at Kansas than he did in his first year at OSU.

No Big 12 Expansion The first question asked of Bob Bowlsby, the Big 12 commissioner, was about expansion of the conference. As he has many times in years past, Bowlsby shut down any speculation of

the conference expanding.

“We have had no expansion discussion at any level,” Bowlsby said.

“We like the ten we have.

We think the full Round Robin is the right way to conduct competition and in the case of our basketball, full double Round Robin.

We are distributing record revenues and we have heretofore unanticipated media opportunities and I don’t expect that to be an active topic on anybody’s agenda within the conference anytime in the foreseeable future.”
