Soledad O’Brien reflects on King’s message Jaden Besteda Staff Reporter

Applause echoed through the auditorium as journalist Soledad O’Brien took the stage.

A part of Oklahoma State’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day events, “An Evening with Soledad O’Brien,” opened with the university’s acapella group, Pokeapella, singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” First written as a poem celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s birthday in 1900, the NAACP embraced the song and it was transformed into an anthem for the Civil Rights Movement. Additionally, student artwork and essay contest winners were announced.

Immediately in her speech, O’Brien touched on the altered message of King and how it can be altered “I did an entire documentary on how “I Had a Dream” came about and it’s only a small chunk of what Dr. King spoke about in all of his speeches, sermons and rages.” O’Brien said.

O’Brien said the 24 hour news cycle does not stop and allows multiple stories of the same for better or worse. Through social media outlets the words of King can be altered. She said the Civil Rights icon’s messages and causes are still relevant, which emphasized the importance of news and truth.

The award-winning journalist was almost two when MLK was assassinated in 1968.

“I know you may be shocked on how someone so young and so vibrant could possibly be alive at the same time as Dr. King was,” O’Brien said.

“He would’ve been 93-years-old right now, which is younger than the late Betty White who he shared a birthday with. This is recent American history we are talking about.”

The floor was open for students in the audience and other attendees to ask O’Brien questions. These questions ranged from breaking through societal barriers to self awareness and action.

O’Brien reportedly describes herself as AfroLatina and one student who also is Afro-Latinx is asked how a person can progress with little representation in their field.

“I don’t know if there’s anything else that you can do besides put your head down and say, ‘Here’s what,’(and) show people what you can do,” O’Brien said. “Don’t get sucked under, because there’s nobody here. Don’t get sucked under by there’s no Afro-Latinas here, there’s barely any Afro-Latina’s anywhere.

“I’m here and I’m going to do what I can do and ask questions, some will be stupid questions or smart.

Everyday I’m going to put my head down, and show people that I’m very good.”

Many people may plan to give when they receive a great amount of money, but that large amount of money may never come. We may plan to give time or talent to a project when we have more time, but that perfect time arrangement may never happen. Again, the apostle Paul encourages us “as you have opportunity, do good to all men.”

We never know when a little gesture of kindness, with money, or helping in an area of service, spending a little time with a person, a word of encouragement, will be just the action that will be a great help to someone. These can be practical ways of living out the Lord’s challenge to love one another. This is the fulfilling of the many commandments in the Bible: loving people by word and action.

Fauci says US omicron outbreak ‘going in the right direction’ Ian Fisher Bloomberg News (TNS) WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser expressed optimism that the omicron surge that has pushed COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations to records will soon peak, though that decline won’t be uniform throughout the U.S. “Things are looking good,” Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday. “We don’t want to get overconfident, but they look like they’re going in the right direction right now.”

Infections are “starting to come down rather sharply” in the U.S. Northeast and Midwest, Fauci said, in line with the variant’s trajectory in South Africa and other places. He said he expected that states in the South and West where cases are still rising will soon follow the same downward path, depending in part on vaccination rates.

“I believe that you will start to see a turnaround throughout the entire country,” he said. “There may be a bit more pain and suffering with hospitalizations in those areas of the country that have not been fully vaccinated or have not gotten boosters.”

Fauci sketched out two longer-term scenarios for COVID-19 as the pandemic enters its third year.

The first is that COVID-19 becomes “less virulent” and can be controlled.

“You’re not eradicating it but it gets down to such a low level, that it’s essentially integrated into the general respiratory infections that we have learned to live with,” he said.

The worst-case scenario is the emergence of a still-more dangerous variant, he said. “Peacemaker” hits streaming with a bang
