The transition to college is scary. The fear of the unknown, the new amount of freedom and the search for what you want to do with your life can seem overwhelming all at once. The good news is that you’re not alone.

Every orientation leader or Camp Cowboy leader you meet might have dealt with those fears. It’s completely normal for college to scare you greatly when you haven’t experienced it yet. Similar to any new activity in one’s life, though, college is one of those things you have experience to truly understand how great it can be, especially at Oklahoma State University.

1. The friends This is true for all years of college, but it has its largest effect freshman year. The number of lifelong friends you’ll make in your first year is staggering. It sounds cliché,

but trust me on this one.

Since all freshmen must reside on campus, you will live on the same floor with people for at least one year. It’s inevitable that you’ll befriend some of these people, and just like that, you’ll know nearly everything about them.

College is the time to find your true self and people who share the same values and visions as you. At OSU, you’ll have more than 25,000 to choose from. Chances are that 20 years from now, you’ll still talk to at least one friend you met your freshman year, and it’s all because you watched Netflix with that person in the lounge on a random Tuesday night.

2. The experiences The number of things to do on any given day on campus is awesome. The Student Union Activities Board is a huge help with this. In just my first semester as a freshman, I saw two stand-up comedians and a heavy

metal band, and I played inflatable miniature golf.

Growing up in my small town, I didn’t often have those opportunities.

To go along with that are the numerous sporting events at OSU. Whether you grew up an OSU fan or supported a different team, before you know it, you’ll wear orange, sit in the student section at Boone Pickens Stadium and sing along to the fight song. It’s an amazing experience to unify with others in the student body, cheering on a team of your own peers to victory.

During basketball games, Gallagher-Iba Arena can get electric, court storms and all.

There are always campus activities at OSU, and every one leads to a memory you’ll have forever.

3. The faculty It’s easy to get caught up in the activities outside the classroom, but the reason we’re all here is, obviously, for what goes on in the classroom.

School can get stressful at times, but when people at OSU say the university has faculty who truly care about you and how you do academically, they mean it.

I visited a professor about my grade one time, got it cleared up and then chatted with him for five minutes about fantasy football.

The faculty here are helpful in any way and then still take their time to treat you like a human being. You don’t necessarily get that at a lot of large public universities. Because the faculty care about who you are, it adds to what you learn.

I had several instances in class when professors applied current events that interest our generation to their lectures. That en-

hanced my learning and contributes to why I think the OSU faculty will show you that you made the right choice

4. The organizations Building off the friends and experiences entries above, there are tons of clubs and organizations at OSU that enhance your time here. During Welcome Week, there is an organizational fair with numerous tables set up for all kinds of groups.

Don’t be scared to sign up for information from many and then find out which ones you want to join. Through them, you will gain not only friends and new opportunities but

also possible leadership chances down the line.

Clubs and organizations are a great way to find your footing at OSU and be a part of something you love from the very start.

If you don’t find a club that fits exactly what you want, you and friends are allowed to start a club of your own. Involvement in organizations will help you grow as a person and a student and will build connections for your future. All of this is thanks to your choice to become a Cowboy.

5. The advancement in life The progression to adulthood starts as soon as you step foot on campus and move stuff into your new

room. College is the time of soul-searching and finding out who you really are.

You learn not only skills in the classroom but also life skills outside of it in everything you do.

It’s one of the greatest rides you’ll ever take in life.

Don’t be afraid. Embrace it. If you do, then one year from now, you’ll have many new friends, fond memories, awesome classes and fun organizations that you can’t wait to return to in the fall. OSU is a great place for all of this, and attending this university is a decision you won’t regret.

5. Chick-fil-A If you can stomach the long lines, the food at the on-campus Chick-fil-A is just as good as it is off campus. It carries everything from nuggets to the historic chicken sandwich and waffle fries.

It is one of the main hot spots, so try to get there early because the wait can be as long as 30 minutes just to go up and order.

4. Country BBQ CO. The place to handle all your barbecue cravings is in the Kerr-Drummond Mezzanine. It has typical barbecue options, such as pulled pork and brisket.

The best dish is one called the smoking gun potato, in which you can get whatever meat you want and then add some other assorted toppings to improve it. This restaurant has six different sauces to try with any of the dishes you get.

Although the KerrDrummond dorms are closing, the Mezzanine restaurants will still be open. Make sure to head there if you want some old-fashioned country barbecue.

3. B&B If you travel to North Dining near the University Commons dorms to get SUMMER 2018

One of the best ones there is B&B, otherwise known as Breakfast and Burgers.

It serves everything from typical breakfast items, such as waffles, to juicy, good burgers.

Some of the best dishes involve a combination of both, such as the Yolk, which is two hamburger patties with a sunny-side up egg all on a crunchy piece of toast.

2. The Carvery When you’re looking for fresh-cut meat, The Carvery in North Dining is made for you. It has the food you want to make every meal feel like a four-course dinner. The Carvery carries everything from meatloaf to juicy rotisserie chicken.

Some of The Carvery’s best meals are served the week before Thanksgiving, when it can offer a

Thanksgiving dinner just like your parents make it.

1. The Ranchers Club If you are looking for a good fine dining meal, then head over to The Atherton Hotel. The Ranchers Club has everything you expect to find at any five-star-type restaurant. This restaurant likely offers what you want to eat, whether it’s a burger, a sandwich or pasta.

My favorite item on the menu is the steak, as The Ranchers Club does it right every time. If you have a meal plan that you need to burn or just want a good meal, then The Ranchers Club is the perfect place for you.

5. The Garage 520 W. Elm Ave. If you feel like eating good bar food, then you don’t have to go far off campus to get it. The Garage has everything from good burgers to quality tacos and typical bar food appetizers.

During your fall semester, whenever the Cowboys are away, you can catch football games on TV there. Go to The Garage if you want to find good times in a bar atmosphere.

4. Granny’s Kitchen 1006 S. Main St. If Southern comfort is what you are feeling for a meal, then make sure to head over to Main Street.

Granny’s Kitchen has everything that fits the Southern comfort definition, from biscuits and gravy to chicken fried SUMMER 2018

steaks.

The best dishes, the steaks, are usually done to perfection. No matter what you get, it will be done just like your grandma made it.

3. Fuzzy’s 305 S. Washington St. For some of the best burritos you can get off campus, head over to The Strip and go to Fuzzy’s.

There, you can get some burritos with signature lime rice inside or many of your other favorite Mexican dishes.

You have to be ready for a long line no matter when you go, though, as many people will head there for any meal. If you can look past the line, good food awaits.

2. The Hideaway 230 S. Knoblock St. You don’t have look far for a good sit-down pizza place. The Hideaway is just across from campus.

Whether you customize

your pizza or order one of the many specialty pizzas, you are in for a tasty meal.

Pizzas aren’t the only choices at The Hideaway.

It also carries many specialty subs and sandwiches. Make sure to stop

by The Hideaway to get a great pizza or sandwich meal.

1. Eskimo Joe’s 501 W. Elm Ave. Is there anything more classic in Stillwater than Eskimo Joe’s? Not far off campus lies this legendary restaurant.

Whether you get the classic bacon cheese fries or one of the Fowl Things, which are chicken sandwiches, you can’t go wrong. Whenever you go to Joe’s, make sure to grab a cup and visit the store for an iconic shirt.

Amid all of the classes, meetings, and other activities on Oklahoma State University’s campus, football and basketball games stand tall as some of the most popular events for students.

Fans put on every piece of orange clothing they have and join their peers to cheer on the Cowboys and Cowgirls to victory.

It’s a spectacle to see and experience, especially in the student section. As a new student, though, it’s important to be aware of the different traditions and tricks that SUMMER 2018

keep one from looking like a freshman. Here are some of the most important things to know.

Where to sit With an All-Sports Pass (which is available during orientation or the first semester), an OSU student can get into every game the university hosts. Most of the sports have general admission seating, but the football and basketball venues have specific locations for student sections.

In football, it spans from behind the west end zone to the northwest side of Boone Pickens Stadium behind the opposing team’s bench.

In Gallagher-Iba Arena, the student sections are behind each basket. All seats in the student section are first come, first serve.

Gates tend to open an hour to an hour and a half before games. To get prime seats, it is important to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to doors opening. Adjust that by adding more or less time depending on the quality of opponent.

The traditions There are several traditions that take place at each game and add to the experience.

For football, the Walk is where the football

team walks to the stadium before each game as a sea of fans line up to cheer on the Cowboys.

The cheerleaders and band also participate.

Tailgating is key for football. Fraternities, sororities, other campus organizations and groups of OSU fans grill, play games and have fun outside the stadium.

Inside the stadium, the entrance of Pistol Pete and Bullet is always a hit, along with the pregame festivities hype man Les leads.

After OSU touchdowns, the cheerleaders jog out on the field with flags that spell “O-S-U” and run in a circle on the side by the student section. Because of the circular path, the flags spell out “O-S-U” for the first half of the run and flip over to “U-S-O” at some point, depending on where you are in the student section.

It’s a tradition to chant “O-S-U” as the flags pass and then change the chant to “U-S-O” as the flags turn.

For basketball, the main tradition takes place during the starting lineups’ announcements.

There are newspapers (usually the O’Colly) in every student section seat. When the opposing team is introduced, fans put the papers in front of their faces and shout, “Who cares?” after every player.

up video is played for OSU, everyone rips the papers and throws the newspaper shreds in the air after every OSU player’s introduction. There are several other traditions that take place, but those are the main ones to know.

The music To go along with the normal traditions, the music the band plays during games deserves a whole separate entry.

The most important is, of course, the fight song “Ride ‘em Cowboys,” played after every OSU touchdown at football games and during key timeouts of basketball games. Everyone is expected to clap along with it. If you don’t know the words immediately, don’t worry.

It’s played enough that you’ll learn them quickly.

A football-exclusive song is “The Waving Song,” also played after every Cowboy touchdown. The fans in the stands wave in unison.

Another popular song the band plays is a version of “Rock’n Roll Part 2,” to which everyone claps. (Now that I think about it, we do a lot of clapping.) When a certain part comes, the whole student section joins in and yells, “We’re gonna beat the hell out of you!”.

Other songs, such

as the Oklahoma state song and Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places,” are commonly heard, so know the words and sing along.

Random notes It’s hard to sum up every little thing you need to know in three categories, so here are some minor notes to keep in mind.

The OSU hype man Les likes to say, “Let’s get this money!” often.

Just go with it.

Eskimo Joe’s is packed every game day, so avoid it unless you want to wait several hours. At the concession stands, you can use your meal plan, which is convenient.

Mike Gundy is easy to get behind with his mullet and all, but Mike Boynton has to be one of the most likable coaches in the NCAA. You’ll want to cheer loudly for both.

Court storms are fun, but be aware if it is about to happen and don’t get trampled.

Know that OSU games will be some of the most memorable events in your college experience.

Embrace that, and make the most of it while you can.

A prime part of enjoying Oklahoma State is experiencing the game day atmosphere.

The easiest way to do that is purchasing an AllSports Pass for $250. Any OSU or NOC-Stillwater student can get an AllSports Pass, which allows entrance into all ticketed home OSU athletic events.

Students can purchase All-Sports Passes in person at the Customer Service Center on the northeast corner of Duck Street and Hall of Fame Avenue or in the ticket office at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

The opportunities and activities for new students interested in Greek Life are only beginning.

The rest of the semester might not match the sheer excitement and bliss of Bid Day, but there are a number of fun and important events that students should be aware of.

Coke date crazy Almost immediately, the long-standing tradition of Coke dates, where members of a sorority and fraternity

pledge class are paired off at random, will continue to attempt to help new students expand their social circles.

To prepare, think of a few questions in advance to help keep conversation moving if it stalls. Nothing is worse than awkward silence with a complete stranger.

Dancing shoes Freshman Follies is a competition in which participants write, choreograph and perform 10-minute mini musicals. Fraternity and sorority pairings often hold tryouts for Follies in the first few weeks of school, and that can be frightening for those who never

engaged in the performing arts in high school. However, after going through the experience, many discover talents and passions they never knew they had.

Pomp ‘til you drop Although the aforementioned items are largely optional, one major obligation for many in Greek Life is their participation in the enormous annual homecoming celebration and competition. Usually, chapters require a set number of hours per week dedicated to gluing little pieces of tissue paper to chicken wire. Some students dread the monoto-

nous activity, but others see pomping as an opportunity to take a study break and bond with friends. Spacing hours throughout the week and not procrastinating until Sunday minimize the impact of those hours.

Find your philanthropy Fraternities and sororities are commited to giving back to the OSU and Stillwater communities. These efforts encompass an enormous array of charities and service organizations. The key for students is finding one that aligns with their concerns or interests.
