It’s the first day of school. You walk from your dorm down to Monroe Street, looking both ways before you cross –– although some morons will tell you that you get free tuition if a bus hits you, that’s not true, don’t do that. You look at the sights around you. A sea of orange shirts filled with happy students, people zooming by you on Spin scooters, therapy dogs in every direction.

Suddenly the moment hits you: “this school rules.”

As a media major, I’ve done my fair share of voicing my sometimesharsh opinions on OSU. But if you look at it holistically, it’s unlike

any other. Speaking from a purely academic standpoint, some might even call it the best in the state. Don’t believe me?

Well the Journal Record just said its undergraduate programs are. You’re getting into a good school, be proud of yourself.

But I’m not here to bore you with boring academic drivel. The academics are just the cherry on top of the school you’re about to experience. When I came from the far-away land of New Jersey as a freshman, I didn’t buy into the hype immediately. Sure, OSU was a cool school to go to, but I wasn’t seeing the “OSU family” aspects of it right away. I thought it was a scam, and honestly, part of me was ready to pack my bags and leave.

But whether it smacks you immediately –– it does to some –– or a whole year after you start there, it’s coming. You See Best School on pg.3

OSU’s has countless traditions. But which one is best?

Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor Oklahoma State is home to many athletics traditions, but some are better, and more historic than others.

Here are the top 10 sports traditions at OSU. No. 10: The student section at O’Brate Stadium It’s the newest tradition in Stillwater, but it has already staked its claim to one of the top traditions.

Between the fraternity corrals and the students in the sitting area they provide entertainment for the whole crowd, but intimidation to opposing right fielders.

No. 9: The Gap Band Anytime an Oklahoma State baseball player hits a home run the song ‘You Dropped a Bomb on Me’ by the Gap Band is played as the crowd claps along to the beat.

It is offered free only through this one who died for us and rose again. Jesus Christ is the way. He declared it while still on the earth, and those disciples who followed made the same claim. There is only one way; there is only one savior. Many are proclaiming different ways; they will prove false. Those who open their hearts to Christ, come to him and trust him will find that what God promises is real. Prove it for yourself!

Continued from pg.1 will find your OSU family there. People are too kind there for you to not. Whether you’re a fish out of water like me or fit in with the country lifestyle there immediately, you will inevitably find yourself swarmed with good vibes and people that are similar to you, I promise.

Going back to the academic side of things, sometimes that family can be found in the classroom.

Do you love a class and subject?

There’s probably a club for it. Join it. Joining a club was the main difference maker for me at OSU. It was the thing that transformed me from being “meh” about my school into absolutely loving it.

Fair warning, even when you find your crew, you will still hit bumps in the road. But know that at OSU, you’re never alone. Failed a math test? Go to the LASSO center where a student will teach you.

Feeling homesick or overwhelmed with anxiety or stress? University Counseling Services is your best friend and they have resources that will help you immediately. Its website is ucs.okstate.edu. Go use it. I did this many times.

Use these resources to further

your own self happiness and success in your life. OSU is looking –– begging –– for its next success story to come out of it. Let that be you. If you utilize OSU to its fullest potential, you will make your name known in the world. World leaders, business moguls and country music sensations went here. An OSU graduate is about to go to freakin’ space with Jeff Bezos for crying out loud. Add yourself to that legendary list.

But while you’re building your empire here, don’t forget to have fun. OSU is home to countless fun opportunities. Go get cheese fries at Joe’s, go to that tailgate with your friend, go to the spider web near the Student Union to nap. Heck,

in a few years, go to Washington Street to see the bars. Go do it all.

In the blink of an eye, OSU ends. I still feel like a freshman, but I only have two semesters left. You’ll have that feeling too. The cliche line “time flies when you’re having fun” is overused and dumb, but it’s true here.

You picked a great school.

Don’t have any regrets, be patient, call your parents and most of all, spread positivity. OSU is opening up this semester. Come enjoy the best school in the state.

OSU faced one of the strangest semesters ever as it navigated the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rules called for social distancing, making it hard for students to experience the real OSU

OSU announced that this semester won’t have masks, social distancing or all the other covid restrictions. Now students will truly get to see the university for what it really is: a special place with some rowdy, fun fans.

This is what it’s really like.

Kaleb Tadpole Staff Reporter After a year of masks, sanitizing and CDC protocols, Camp Cowboy is finally back for incoming students at OSU. However, this time, it will be almost back to normal.

Last year took its toll on everyone, including Camp Cowboy.

With masks, limited staff and CDC guidelines that had to be followed closely, it made it hard for Camp Cowboy to provide the same opportunities it always had.

“We were limited on staff, and we had to fit three camps into one, it was really difficult.”

Sara Trevino, Director of Student Involvement for Camp Cowboy said.

Usually, Camp Cowboy is located at three different locations, one at the main campus in Stillwater, another in Mulberry, Arkansas and the last in Anadarko, Oklahoma. However, last year the camp was

not allowed to go out of state.

Despite it being very different from what everyone is used to, Camp Cowboy did its part by following CDC guidelines and ensuring the camp was safe while still having fun.

“Last year we really focused on sanitization, every student had to sanitize before they got there and after they left, we also assigned certain staffers for sanitation, it was difficult, but it was a success with no COVID cases.”

Trevino said.

With the lifting of the mask mandate at OSU it has made it easier for Camp Cowboy to get mostly back to normal. The camp will be held at the main OSU campus in Stillwater as well as being able to go back out of state to the Mulberry, Arkansas location.

Although it will be mostly back to normal, there will still be some changes to camp this year. One of the changes is that the camp is limited to 110 stu-

dents this year, instead of the usual 150. Also, the camp will not be at the Anadarko, Oklahoma location for 2021.

This year students will finally be able to feel normal again at Camp Cowboy and get back to doing the fun and exciting things it has to offer like high ropes, zip lines and just getting to know one another as incoming students make the transition to the college life.

Camps have already started this year but there are still a few chances for incoming students to participate in Camp Cowboy this summer.

“We just finished our 3rd Stillwater camp; It gets better every week.” Trevino said.

Now that Camp Cowboy has gone back to normal, students can now fully enjoy the three-day experience that will expose them to life at OSU and maybe even meet some new friends along the way.

Top 5 best places to eat in Stillwater Chris Becker Assistant Sports Editor There’s no shortage of places to eat when in Stillwater. Everyone has heard of Eskimo Joe’s and Hideaway, but what are the five best places in Stillwater?

To best capture the essence of Stillwater and the college experience you have to keep it local. Stillwater has plenty of fast-food options, but the local places are even better, and affordable.

Honorable mention: China Wok One word comes to mind that perfectly describes China Wok: authentic. The service, great, the food, great and the affordability is perfect.

China Wok is a great option for anyone, and the owner, Michael, makes the whole trip enjoyable.

No. 5: Ron’s Hamburgers and Chili Ron’s is a hidden gem of Stillwater. Located on Sixth Street just north of Perkins road, Ron’s has great burgers, and cheese fries. A good hamburger is always a must, but Ron’s sausage burger is another level. The burger is made of 50% country sausage and 50% beef, and earns Ron’s the No. 4 spot in best restaurants of Stillwater.

No. 4: Granny’s Nothing is better than breakfast, that can make you feel back at home, and that is what Granny’s provides at an affordable price. Located in downtown Stillwater, Granny’s is a great place to get breakfast or brunch. What breaks Granny’s into the top five are their Cinnamon Rolls.

No. 3: Eskimo Joes History. Eskimo Joes one restaurant that immediately comes to mind when someone thinks of Stillwater. The Cheese Fries alone would earn Joes a spot on this list,

add in everything else on the menu and in the restaurant you have a spot in the top three.

No. 2 Rancher’s Club No matter which meal plan you choose, chances are you will have extra when the semester begins to wind down. That’s the perfect time to go to the Rancher’s Club inside the Atherton Hotel. Great for lunch

or even a steak dinner with friends or a significant other. Although pricey, your meal plan will take care of the bill.

No. 1 Da Vinci’s One style of food Stillwater does lack in choices in Italian, but the limited options are delicious.

News Advice for new students from President Kayse Shrum: “I’d say that the social distancing isolation that came with COVID is not what college life is all about. Don’t judge your university experience on the past year because we all had to adjust and get through it. Now that we have the opportunity to embrace a more normal social life again, I’d say try to limit time on your devices and spend more face-to-face time with your friends because nothing quite compares to that.”

OSU Notebook: Cowboys during Big 12 media days Dean Ruhl Assistant Sports Editor Coach Mike Gundy walked with bravado into AT&T Stadium on Thursday Sporting a perfectly pressed gray suit, with a paisley maroon tie accompanying it, Gundy turned heads as he patrolled the sidelines.

Not just because of his attire, but rather his new haircut. His mullet, a staple to his look for the past several years, and something fans of Oklahoma State have continuously hoped to replicate, was no more.

“When I went to Kathy -- she has cut my hair for 20 years now -- and I love her company, but I said I’ve got a lot of things going on, so let’s try and cut my hair to where I don’t have to cut it until the season is over.”

Gundy said having the mullet has been fun, and hopes it will grow back by the end of the season.

It was one of the lighter moments during Gundy’s Big 12 media day press conference, interjected between questions about Spencer Sanders development, the running back group and the offensive line’s health.

Here are some other smaller notes from OSU’s day in Arlington.

Gundy comfortable with the defense 2020 was a historic year for OSU’s defense.

The Cowboys led the nation in third-down defense and defensive touchdowns, as well as ranked in the top 10 nationally on tackles for loss and forced fumbles.

Gundy said he has been impressed with defensive coordinator Jim Knowles and his willingness to adapt to the Big 12. The team has simplified its defense instead of trying to out-coach other teams, which he said has paid off.

“I feel more comfortable with our defense going on the field than I have maybe in my first

12 to 14 years as a head coach,” Gundy said. “I think Jim is very innovative in his blitz packages.”

Gundy said the defense is the fastest he has had at OSU. Combined with the improved tack-

ling from this past season, Gundy has confidence in the defense.

No. 7: Paddle People Anyone at an OSU football game knows where the paddle people inhabit inside of Boone Pickens

Stadium. The Paddle People are crucial to the noise of the stadium.

The loudness of the student section starts with the pounding of the paddles against the sideline padding.

No. 6: Postgame Alma Mater Another tradition that may seem small in the sense of other traditions, but the postgame alma mater whether after a win or a loss is easily one of the top traditions at OSU. Grab a friend or a fellow fan and send the team off with the Alma Mater No. 5: The Walk Fans draped in orange line Washington Street from the Student Union to the gates of Boone Pickens Stadium as the football team walks into the game. With the band

blaring the fight songs, children and other fans cheering for their team.

The Walk starts off the top five.

No. 4: The softball outfield decks Before last season softball fans could back up their trucks and watch the Cowgirls from the outfield. Now the Social, a group of friends, decks were placed in the outfield, which makes the experience even greater.

No. 3: Friends in Low Places When the clock strikes zero and the official blows his whistle in the third quarter Garth Brooks’ Friends in Low Places begins to play. Fans grab their friends, and like the Alma Mater, they begin to sway.

No. 2: Bedlam

Although broad Bedlam is a rivalry unlike any other. No matter the sport the game is destined to be loud and crazy, and is a spectacle.

Bedlam has an argument for the top spot, but it gets edged out by just one other OSU tradition.

No. 1: Homecoming Nothing can top OSU Homecoming. Topped off with house decorations and the walk around, homecoming is a celebration that can take some stress away from class work and allow people to spend time around campus with friends, and then watch OSU football afterward.

Martin could fill Wallace’s spot Like the running back spot, OSU enters the season without a bonafide superstar at wide receiver.

Tylan Wallace has moved onto an NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens and Dillon Stoner the Las Vegas Raiders.

Both were quarterback Spencer Sanders’ favorite targets in 2020.

OSU is high on Brennan Presley, who scored three times in OSU’s Cheez-It Bowl victory, but Tay Martin is a name garnering attention.

Martin, a transfer from Washington State, caught 15 passes for 149 yards in 2020 as Wallace’s backup. Gundy and Sanders spoke highly of Martin on Thursday.

“Tay does very well at everything, but one thing I would say he does very well at is just getting the ball at high point,” Sanders said. “His vertical is unbelievable.”

Sanders said Martin can step in and assume Wallace’s ‘Z’ spot in the receiving corps with ease. Both Gundy and Sanders said Martin’s development is only going to improve this season.

“We feel good about his development, after getting into our program,” Gundy said. “He is in really good physical condition now.”

Defense, Gundy, excited about Harvell-Peel’s return Kolby Harvell-Peel was expected to follow teammate Rodarius Williams.

After 2020 ended with a 37-34 victory for OSU in the Cheez-It Bowl, Harvell-Peel was one of the Cowboys expected to enter into the NFL draft pool.

But, on Jan. 18, Harvell-Peel took to Twitter to announce his career decision. He wouldn’t follow Williams to the NFL, instead choosing to return to OSU for another season.

Added into a veteran secondary comprised of Tre Sterling, Jarrick Bernard-Converse, Christian Holmes and Thomas Harper, the Cowboys have one of the most experienced secondaries in the country.

Gundy and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, who also chose to return to OSU this season are excited about the talent the defensive backs have.

“In the Big 12, having experience in the secondary, particularly at the safety positions and/or outside backers, are very important,” Gundy said. “The experience allows those guys to not get their eyes violated a lot in run-pass situations and certainly helps our defense make more plays.”

Rodriguez said having an experienced secondary is always good to have behind the linebackers. He said it makes his job easier.

“It is a tremendous help (having Harvell-Peel),” Rodriguez said. “You’ve got offenses that don’t want to throw it toward his side because he is a playmaker. It is always good to have him behind my back.” sports.ed@ocolly.com
