Moving to a new place, leaving friends and family, studying something you could be doing for the rest of your life and more are all intimidating factors to face when moving into this new environment.

But you’ve got this.

The journey might be stressful, but it’s also going to be fun. Probably the most fun you’re ever going to have.

Never again are you going to experience the sudden rush of freedom you feel when you finally start college.

It’s normal to have fears when starting college, but college truly is something you must experience before you understand it.

OSU is full of opportunities to get involved in all kinds of organizations. Whether that’s the Bee Club, Greek life, Anime club and more, OSU has just about every club and organizations you can think of.

During your first week at OSU, a lot of student organizations will have booths around the union and library.

Use this as your chance to gather information on any organization you might be interested in.

The journey is long, but entirely worth it.

College really is what you make it. Make it the best that it can be.

We’re so glad that you chose this campus out of the other numerous choices you may have had to pick from.

I promise you that you will have an exciting time in Stillwater, Oklahoma!

I was in your position around this time last year. I was starting orientation and nervous about college. Where would my classes be?

Would I be able to find them? Would I make friends? All the doubts a freshman could possibly have.

All of these doubts went away when classes started. During my first year at OSU, I learned a so many things that I wished I knew as a freshman.

Here are a few: 1. Introduce yourself to your professors.

For your first year, you may be in general classes like history, science or composition. The class may seem big at first, but I promise you if you go talk to your professors it will make your first year better. 2. STUDY. I was in a rude awakening when my first exam came up.

I never really studied in high school and did quite well. In college, I didn’t study for my first exam and totally failed it. I encourage you to find your study habits and stick to them. What I was told my first semester was for every hour you’re in the classroom spend two hours doing your homework and studying. This may not work for everybody, but it is a starting point.

3. Get involved!

I can’t stress this enough. My first year I was scared about getting too involved in college because of working, my social life and my class work.

I honestly regret not being involved enough my first year. If you do feel like it will be a lot like I did, start out by finding a few clubs that you would enjoy being a part of. If you think you can commit to more, then do it! There are over 500 clubs and organizations to be involved in on campus.

4. Get out of your residence hall.

There are a number of opportunities to get out of your room and interact with other people on campus.

Amid all of the classes, meetings, and other activities on Oklahoma State University’s campus, football and basketball games stand tall as some of the most popular events for students. Fans put on every piece of orange clothing they have and band together with their peers to cheer on the Cowboys and Cowgirls to victory.

It’s a spectacle to see and join, especially in the student section. As a new student, though, it’s important to be aware of the different traditions and tricks that keep one from MONDAY, MAY 13, 2019

looking like a freshman. Here are some of the most important things to know.

Where to sit With an All-Sports Pass (which is available during orientation or the first semester), am OSU student can get into every game the university hosts.

Most of the sports have general admission seating, but the football and basketball venues have specific locations for students to sit. In football, it spans from behind the west end zone to the northwest side of Boone Pickens Stadium behind the opposing team’s bench.

All seats in the student section are first come, first serve. Gates tend to open an hour to an hour and a half before games. To get prime seats, it is important to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to doors opening. Adjust that by adding more or less time depending on the quality of opponent.

The traditions There are several traditions that take place at each game and add to the experience. For football, the Walk is where the football team walks to the stadium before each game as a sea of fans line up to

cheer the Cowboys on along with the cheerleaders and band. Tailgating is also key for football. Fraternities, sororities, other campus organizations and groups of OSU fans grill, play games and have fun outside the stadium. Inside the stadium, the entrance of Pistol Pete and Bullet is always a hit, along with the pregame festivities hype man Les leads.

After OSU touchdowns, the cheerleaders jog out on the field with flags that spell “O-S-U” and run in a circle on the side by the student section. Because of the circular path, the flags spell out “O-S-U” for the first half and flip over to “U-S-O” at some point, depending on where you are in the student section.

Because of this, it’s a tradition to chant “OS-U” as the flags pass and then change the chant to “U-S-O” as the flags turn. For basketball, the main tradition takes place during the starting lineups’ announcements. There are newspapers (usually the O’Colly) in every student section seat. When the opposing team is introduced, fans put the papers in front of their faces and shout, “Who cares?” after every player. Then while the hype-up video is played for OSU, everyone rips the papers and throws

This restaurant likely offers what you want to eat, whether it’s a burger, a sandwich or pasta. My personal favorite item on the menu is the steak, as The Ranchers Club does it right every time.

GREEK LIFE OFFERS OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEW STUDENTS s taf f r epo rt @ocolly

The opportunities and activities for new Greek Life students are only beginning.

The rest of the semester may not be able to match the sheer excitement and bliss of bid day but there are a number of fun and important events that students should be aware of.

Coke date crazy: Almost immediately the long standing tradition of Coke dates, where members of a sorority and fraternity pledge class are paired off at random, will continue to attempt to help new students expand their social circles. To prepare, guys pick up a “Barn Card” so all those frequent trips pay off and, if necessary, think of a few questions in advance to help keep conversation moving if it stalls. Nothing is worse than awkward silence with a complete stranger.

Don’t put away those resumes yet: Greek organizations look great on a resume, but even in the first semester of freshman year there are plenty of chances to get ahead of the curve.

Applications for Freshman Representative Council, Junior Greek Life and others will soon be available. These organizations are a great way to meet other aspiring leaders at OSU and typically serve as feeders to their bigger cousins: Panhellenic Council, Interfraternity Council and Student Government Association.

Put on your dancing shoes: Freshman Follies is a competition where participants write, choreograph and MONDAY, MAY 13, 2019

perform 10-minute mini musicals. Fraternity and sorority pairings often hold tryouts for Follies in the first few weeks of school, and it can be frightening for those who never engaged in the performing arts in high school. However, after going through the experience, many discover talents and passions they never knew they had.

Pomp till you drop: Although the aforementioned items are largely optional, one major obligation for many in Greek Life is their participation in the enormous annual homecoming celebration and competition.

Usually, chapters require a set number of hours per week dedicated to gluing little pieces of tissue paper to chicken wire. Some students dread the monotonous activity, but by spacing hours throughout the week and not procrastinating until Sunday, the impact of those hours can be minimized.

Find your philanthropy: The greatest legacy of fraternity and sororities is their commitment to giving back to the OSU and Stillwater Community, and these efforts encompass an enormous array of charities and service organizations.

The key for students is finding one that aligns with their concerns or interests to get as much enjoyment out of the act as the recipients do the service.

1. Knoblock Sreet If you have an early class, Knoblock Street close to Hideaway Pizza might have some available spaces.

There is a one hour time limit, so be sure to park here only if you’ll be on and off campus quickly. It’s perfect if you’re running late and need a quick place to park before a 50-minute class.

2. The Strip Similar to Knoblock Street, there’s a time limit on these spaces. If you can be in and out in under an hour, they’re the perfect place to park if you have a class near the Student Union.

3. Residential streets near University Avenue There are plenty of residential neighborhoods near University Avenue, close to OSU’s Greek houses. These places are best if you don’t mind a little walking time and have classes in Murray, North Murray, Human Sciences, Life Sciences West or Mathematical Sciences.

4. Residential streets near McElroy Street If you have a little extra time before class starts, consider parking on residential streets near the Zink and Allen suites.

You’ll walk a little further than if you had a parking permit, but most classroom buildings are still within a 15-minute walk. This is ideal if you have classes in

North Classroom Building or Agriculture Hall.

5. Ramsey Street between Sixth and Fourth Streets Similar to the other residential streets on the list, Ramsey Street is perfect if you need to park your car for an extended period of time. It’s close to Paul Miller Journalism and Broadcast Building, Spears School of Business, Morrill and the Seretean Center for Performing Arts. Plus, several houses on Ramsey Street are empty, so parking shouldn’t disturb residents too much.

3. Just Wafflin’ One of the newer places in Stillwater, Just Wafflin’ offers customers a fresh take on a breakfast classic. The menu features a wide variety of signature waffles. One popular menu item is a waffle topped with a poached egg, maplewood ham and creamy hollandaise sauce.

Customers can also create their own custom waffles.

4. IHOP The International House

Of Pancakes is a staple for breakfast goers across the country. IHOP offers pretty much every breakfast food, including pancakes, eggs, sausage, omelettes and french toast.

Another added bonus: Stillwater’s IHOP is open 24/7.

5. Whataburger Whataburger is famous for its honey butter chicken biscuits, but it also offers other breakfast items, including pancakes and breakfast sandwiches. All its breakfast items can be made into a combo, which comes with hash browns and a drink. Whataburger breakfast is served from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m.
