Editorial: Why residents should shop local

Shopping locally has many benefits for the city and its residents. When you shop at locallyowned stores, the money you spend stays in Stillwater. Local businesses are more likely to purchase from other local businesses, so the tax base grows and so do local businesses. A stronger tax base means better schools, smoother roads, and more support for local police and fire departments. Small businesses are ex-

ceptional employers. Stillwater families and students rely on these small businesses for employment. Spending money at a local store rather than a large chain could keep a business afloat and save someone’s job. Along with being solid places of work, small businesses provide specialized products and services that mega chains can’t compete with. Small businesses encourage competition in the marketplace, and the more

That’s because you probably know the people in charge at a local store. Large chains are often bureaucratic, and by the time you’re in

touch with someone empowered to remedy the problem, you’re frustrated beyond repair. Local businesses tend to donate more to local nonprofits, directly benefiting your friends, family and neighbors.
