Editorial: CMU has chance to prove its integrity O’Colly Editorial staff

@ Ocol ly

It doesn’t take much indepth searching to find the Central Michigan University’s core values on its website. The first one listed: integrity. It’s the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. CMU has the opportunity to embody that. The Chippewas beat Oklahoma State 30-27 Devin L. Wilber/O’COLLY on Saturday in Stillwater. Quarterback Cooper Rush OSU cornerback Ashton Lampkin kneels after his attempt slung the ball in the air. to stop Corey Willis failed at the end of the Cowboys’ loss. Jesse Kroll caught it as sprinted across the field The OSU football team he fell. Before he hit the and its fans stood quiet in turf, Kroll pitched the ball and into the end zone. to Corey Willis. Willis Game over. disbelief. Moments before

they were cheering until an intentional grounding call gave CMU an untimed down. That cheering should have never stopped. By this time, OSU fans should have been singing the alma mater with a 2-0 football team. The play that quieted Boone Pickens Stadium should have never happened. The NCAA football rulebook states that the game should have ended, despite the intentional grounding penalty. After the game, the officials admitted their hiccup. Now, all that’s left, is for CMU

to accept the truth. For the game’s result to be overturned, OSU must appeal to CMU, and the Chippewas must approve it. That’s easier said than done. The Chippewas would give up a win against a team from a Power Five conference. They would give up an easy road to tallying a 12-0 record. CMU doesn’t play another opponent ranked in the top 25 this season. It’s not easy, but practice what you preach, Chippewas. CMU can be remembered for a game-winning Hail Mary that shouldn’t

have happened. They can use the play as a recruiting tool. It’ll be free exposure on ESPN all season. It’s an opportunity small schools dream of. But how can CMU try to improve its university on a play that never should have happened? Especially when its motto begins with integrity? CMU, you claim to teach integrity. Now’s your chance. They say the best way to teach is by example. Here is that example. F o l l o w t h e O ’ C o l ly : @ o c o l ly

ONLY ONE WAY TO GOD! Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God) except through me.” (Jn. 14:6 NIV) Peter said, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12 NIV) Paul said, For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all men...” (1 Tim 2:5-6 NIV) The same essential message was declared by the major players in the New Testament Scriptures; Jesus, Peter and Paul. Jesus told his followers to into all the world with this good news. God has made a way so mankind could be reconciled to their maker. The plan, hidden in God for centuries, now is made manifest. It is different in that it was a salvation that came from God and not man.

God had done for man what was needed, but what man could not accomplish. Only God could do this.. “...God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing (charging) their trespasses unto them...” (2Co..5:19 KJV) “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly...God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Ro.5:6,8 NIV) God has done for us, what we could not do, and we are to tell everyone the good news. God freely offers you forgiveness and a new life. It is offered free only through this one who died for us and rose again. Jesus Christ is the way. He declared it while still on the earth, and those disciples who followed made the same claim. There is only one way; there is only one savior. Many are proclaiming different ways; they will prove false. Those who open their hearts to Christ, come to him and trust him will find that what God promises is real. Prove it for yourself!

Redding, his answer was different. “That should have been a loss of down and the end of the game at that point, so that extension should not have happened,” O’Dey said. O’Dey said he cannot make any decision about a change in the outcome because it is “outside of my jurisdiction.” Walt Anderson, the coordinator of football officials for the Big 12, agreed. Instead, the officials called intentional grounding and gave an extra play to Central Michigan, despite time having expired. However, the result of the game will not be reversed.

Anderson quoted Rule 1.1.3.b, which says once “the result of the game is final (it) cannot be overturned.” OSU athletic director Mike Holder said he is aware of the ruling not to overturn the game, but it doesn’t make sense to him. “In my mind, it is incomprehensible that a mistake made after time had expired cannot be corrected,” Holder said. “The final score shows that Oklahoma State lost the game, but that doesn’t mean that I have to agree with it.” F o l l o w t h e o ’ c o l ly : @ o c o l ly

Ruiz’s report card BY NATHAN RUIZ/EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

OSU Overall

The Cowboys should have won this game. They shouldn’t have let the game get to a point where a miracle, last-second touchdown cost them a victory. The play shouldn’t have happened in the first place, as officials have admitted to making a mistake in allowing it. But Oklahoma State should have played better. The Cowboys can be better. Saturday, the Cowboys came out flat, and it showed in the result.

Officiating That grade might be too nice. The entire Mid-American Conference crew incorrectly allowed the Chippewas another play after OSU quarterback Mason Rudolph was correctly called for intentional grounding. The Big 12 replay officials had every opportunity to correct the MAC crew’s mistake, but instead, the conference doomed one of its teams. The MAC crew and Big 12 replay officials were suspended two games. The Cowboys might wish that suspension came one game sooner.

f

Mike Gundy, to his credit, took ownership for the intentional grounding call on OSU’s final offensive play. Gundy said that pass play has been in the Cowboys’ playbook for years, but he didn’t know all the rules that applied to it. That’s illogical. He had to tell Rudolph to take a step out of the tackle box, a receiver to go down the sideline, or anyone to take the snap and run back through Gallagher-Iba Arena. That play might’ve seemed out of context Saturday, considering how little OSU ran the ball. Gundy and offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said they gave up on the run game too soon. A one-dimensional offense won’t keep up in a Big 12 shootout.

Last Play

I suppose it’s a matter of perspective. For the portion of the country that isn’t loaded with OSU fans, that final play was incredible. For Jesse Kroll to have the presence of mind to perfectly shovel the ball to Corey Willis while falling to the ground encapsulates how much of a miracle the play was. The only thing keeping that play from being an A+ is that it shouldn’t have happened in the first place.
