In 2019, we legitimately didn’t know who the starting quarterback would be until a few hours before the season opener. This time around, it’ll be different. Redshirt sophomore Spencer Sanders, who got the
starting nod last season, is back as the main man under center. The dual-threat QB from Denton, Texas, flashed promise as a passer with a huge arm and elite mobility but fell into a bit of a slump toward the middle of the season, as the turnovers began to be a problem. Still, with another
year under his belt and QB coach Tim Rattay in the fold, Sanders has the chance to take it up a notch this season. With speed and elusiveness that’ll keep defenders up at night, Sanders rushed to the tune of 628 yards last season. Now he’ll get the chance to improve as
a pocket passer while continuing to threaten defenses with his legs. With all the physical tools to succeed, Sanders has tons of potential. And 2020 could be the season where he breaks out and transforms himself into a top-tier quarterback — assuming his development follows suit.

Backing up Sanders is Shane Illingworth, the true freshman 4-star QB from Norco, Texas. Illingworth stands big and tall at 6-foot-6, 235 pounds with a huge arm. While he isn’t the athlete Sanders is, he can still move around the pocket well enough. But the true treat here is Illingworth’s arm.
With sophomore QB Brendan Costello entering the transfer portal, Illingworth is slotted in as the clear-cut backup. Illingworth is talented, but this is Sanders’ team. If the Cowboys hope to reach the high expectations people have placed on them, it’ll start with Sanders.
