Cowboys crush Kansas
Cowboys' future at quarterback, running back seem to be set
44-7
Chris Becker After two games without a passing touchdown, true freshman Shane Illingworth found a wide open Braydon Johnson on a post route for a 66-yard touchdown early in the second quarter against Kansas. Illingworth didn’t slow down after that. He finished the game with 265 yards and three touchdowns after a slow first start against West Virginia. Illingworth showed that he could be the future of the Oklahoma State quarterback tree after Spencer Sanders. “His maturity over the past couple of games, a couple of weeks, has just really got my attention,” wide receiver Tylan Wallace said. “He has the mentality of an older guy, you don’t see that a lot in freshmen. I’m just really excited for him in the future and just the way he holds himself.” With Sanders getting closer to coming back from a right ankle injury for the Cowboys and a bye week this week giving the Cowboys more time to get back healthy, Illingworth may have seen his last snaps for at least a few games. However, these snaps the last three weeks are valuable for his growth and gives him experience for whenever his time to take over comes, whenever that may be. Staying in the backfield, OSU’s running backs are set for this season with Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown getting the majority of the touches. But looking ahead to next season, Dezmon Jackson and Dominic Richardson got quality touches and playing time against Kansas. Hubbard finally had the breakout game he was looking for to get him rolling, which is not good for the rest of the Big 12. He ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns to get his season numbers kickstarted.
Shane Illingworth had an impressive game in his second ever start against Kansas. “Obviously, the last two games, I haven’t done what I wanted to,” Hubbard said. “I just show up to play football everyday, work hard everyday. I thought the first two games, we actually played pretty good, a lot of these mistakes fall back on me.” The Cowboys offense finally took some pressure off the Cowboys’ defense, which continued its dominant run through the season. With the starters in the game for roughly 2.5 quarters, the Cowboys held Kansas to less than 70 yards and no points. The defense still shows no sign of slowing down, despite both Amen Ogbongbemiga and Malcom Rodriguez going down at different points in the game with undisclosed injuries. “Basically the goal of the day was to go out there, fly around, make sure you tackle, and make sure they don’t score,” linebacker Devin Harper said. “Coach Knowles preaches that we control the game, and if they don’t score, we’ll win and we can be the best in the nation to be honest.” sports.ed@ocolly.com

COVID-19 Update
SGA recommends option for in-person graduation By Trent Gibbs
Oklahoma State University President Burns Hargis announced that all Fall 2020 graduation ceremonies would take place virtually in order to contain the spread of COVID-19. Students received this information in a university-wide email on Sept. 23. A similar announcement was released earlier this year when OSU announced that all in-person Spring graduation ceremonies would take place this fall. Other universities in the Big 12 conference announced their plans to hold virtual commencements for the fall much earlier in the year, including the University of Texas at Austin, Kansas University, and West Virginia University. In response to student complaints, five senators in the Student Government Association met virtually last week to author a joint recommendation advocating for an in-person graduation ceremony option for all students who will receive diplomas this fall, given all attendees provide a negative test result for COVID-19 no more than 10 days before attending. The SGA Senate University Committee heard the recommendation on Oct. 2, and passed it with a 5-0 vote. It is slated to be heard by the senate body on Wednesday, Oct. 6, and if passed will then be forwarded to the OSU Office of the President. For more information or to read the recommendation, contact SGA Senate Chair Ashley Schultz at sgasenate@okstate.edu.

Gabriella Coleman and company had an anti-climatic finish to her –– and OSU’s –– game against Baylor.

Cowgirls shut out in tie against Baylor Jacob Sturm Gabriella Coleman got the opportunity she had been looking for in the first half of Oklahoma State soccer’s 0-0 tie against the Baylor Bears. She made a run into the open space and was played in with a through ball, setting her up for the chance across goal in the 10th minute. When she struck the ball,
she knew the outcome. An immediate turn away from the goal and a frustrated look suggested a disappointing shot. It wasn’t. The shot rolled across the box and went just wide, before heading out for a goal kick. It turned out to be one of the Oklahoma State women’s soccer team’s best chances. OSU (3-0-1) struggled to create opportunities in the final third and prevented the Baylor attackers from causing danger in its box. Baylor (0-2-2) didn’t concede to the OSU attacking onslaught. The Bears forced the Cowgirls to play down the wings, making Hannah Webb and Charmé Morgan critical at-
tackers in its 3-4-3 formation. It paid off. Most attacks didn’t make it into the center, and the OSU attack fell apart. The Bears covered the angles, forcing the Cowgirls to work for quality looks at goal too. “It was a pretty evenly contested match I thought,” Carmichael said. “Baylor do what they do, they’re aggressive, high press, tough to play against. Defended really well and made it hard for us to be quite honest. I thought (in the) first half we probably had a little bit better of the play, second half they did.” Olyvia Dowell put the pressure on Bears keeper Jennifer Wandt on multiple occasions. Wandt responded with flawless
reactions to keep the Cowgirls out. Dowell’s best chance was a one-on-one opportunity that sent Wandt diving to her right. There will be things to learn in OSU’s first game it didn’t win in 2020, but also some positives from the trip to Waco. “Anytime you go on the road and get a shutout, you’re going to be happy with your team defense, but maybe a little disappointed, especially in that first half that we didn’t put one away,” Carmichael said. sports.ed@ocolly.com

LIVING FOR OTHERS! "...I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain thesalvation that is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (2Tim.2:10 NIV) “For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” (1Co.10:33-11:1 NIV) The words of the Apostle Paul. The apostle is telling us to follow his example as he follows Christ himself. Jesus went about helping, healing, encouraging, and challenging others. His final act on earth was to “die for others; you and me.” In the end, Christ has been exalted eternally to the highest place. Especially in I Co. 9 &10, Paul speaks of his rights as a man and minister of Christ. Yet, he did not take advantage of these rights so there would be no hinderance to his
message of Christ and his salvation. He did not want to place a stumbling block in anyone’s way. He wanted to do everything possible to bring people to Christ. He speaks of running a race to win a prize. In this life, men control their eating and activities to win temporary crowns, but in the Christian’s life we are to discipline ourselves to win a crown that lasts forever. (Co.9:24-27) The Lord Jesus said, “If anyone would come after me. he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Lu.9:23 NIV) However. it is not a call to strict religious rules and ceremonies, but a call to live a life in helping and serving others. Christ said, “...whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt.25:40 NIV) Living a lifestyle like this, has an eternal reward

By the numbers: OSU vs. Kansas Headset check
By Adam Engel The Oklahoma State Cowboys head into a bye week following a 47-7 victory over Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas. Here are a few numbers from the Cowboy’s win 593: Total offensive yards for Oklahoma State. This number also represents OSU’s highest offensive yardage total since OSU defeated West Virginia on November 17, 2018. 1-14: Third down conversions completions for Kansas.
2: Receiving touchdowns for OSU wide receiver Tylan Wallace. Prior to today’s contest, Wallace was scoreless. 8: Number of buses OSU took to Lawrence, Kansas. That is a lot of buses. 6: Number of OSU receivers with at least one Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire reception 53: Total number of In football, which is a game of inches points scored in today’s con- and numbers, OSU had many numbers test. This game also marks put up in an impressive win over the Jay the first time this season that an OSU game eclipsed the over/under.

Chris Becker Pencils down, it’s time for the grades. Oklahoma State throttled Kansas 47-7 to move to 3-0 on the young season. Here is how the Cowboys graded out. Uniforms: A Not the best the Cowboys have ever worn, but it was and always will be hard to follow up throwback uniforms. The black matte helmets are nice, the white jerseys are classic staple and the gray pants are a nice touch, but it was just missing something. Still a solid combination from the equipment staff. Passing offense: A+ Shane Illingworth got the start again in place of the injured Spencer Sanders, and he got rolling early and didn’t slow down. Illingworth
threw for 265 yards and three touchdowns on 17-for23 passing for the Cowboys. Illingworth lit up the Kansas defense and continued until the Cowboys built a lead and put Ethan Bullock into the game. One of the biggest problems for the Cowboys the first two games was the passing game, but that was fixed against the Jayhawks. Rushing offense: A+ No fumbles this week, so that’s a plus. Cowboy fans got to see five different guys carry the ball in the game. Chuba Hubbard had his best game of the season with more than 140 yards and two touchdowns. LD Brown continued to see a nice workload rushing for 37 yards on eight carries. Then Dezmon Jackson and Dominic Richardson took over late in the game and both had double digit carries. Jackson almost broke the 100-yard mark, hitting 91 on just 10 touches. Richardson ran for 27 on 12, but got some important goal line snaps. Micah Cooper also saw some action for the Cowboys. The five Cowboy
running backs totaled 295 rushing yards. The Kansas mascot’s mask: AThis earned the grade it did simply for the creativity it took to pull off a mask for a mascot. The mask had a nice white strip with the name on the side and a clear piece over the mouth. Who knows why/ But it was a neat addition to the mythical bird. The whole OSU defense: A+ No point to break up the unit that would receive the same grade anyway. If there was a grade higher than an A+, the defense would get that. Before the starters were pulled in the fourth quarter, Kansas was shut out and still only scored seven points on the backups. The starting defense allowed less than 70 total yards and the defense as a whole gave up only 193 yards of offense. The Cowboys held Kansas’ top running back Pooka Williams to 32 yards on 2.3 yards per carry. This defense is off to a hot start and continues to impress. sports.ed@ocolly.com

A GREAT CAUSE
OSU vs. Kansas
Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire OSU’s playcalling had a fascinating game plan against the Jayhawks.
Ben Hutchens In a 47-7 blowout of the Kansas Jayhawks, it is easy to think that the Oklahoma State football coaching staff put itself on cruise control. That is not the case, there are still impactful decisions that have to be made in a blowout. Three decisions in particular stuck out from Saturday’s game. Starting Shane Illingworth The biggest decision faced by the Oklahoma State football coaching staff ahead of Saturday’s game against the Kansas Jayhawks was one made before kickoff. Instead of unleashing quarterback Spencer Sanders, who has been healing from an ankle sprain, OSU decided to start backup quarterback Shane Illingworth. The decision to roll with the Illingworth paid off, as he went 17-for-23 for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Illingworth looked great on Saturday, posting a quarterback rating of 213.7 and leading the offense down the field for 41 points. Aside from helping secure a victory, the Cowboy coaching staff’s faith in Illingworth allowed Sanders to rest his ankle an additional week during next week’s bye. Aggressive play-calling early On the first drive of the game, before the game
got out of hand, the OSU coaching staff had another decision to make. OSU was faced with a fourth-and-one at the KU 18-yard line. Instead of kicking the field goal, OSU lined up in a diamond formation and gave the ball to RB Chuba Hubbard, who powered through Jayhawk defenders and picked up the first down. Although the Cowboys would eventually settle for a field goal on that drive, the decision to be aggressive was a microcosm of the Cowboy coaching staff’s willingness to push the ball downfield and apply pressure to the Jayhawk defense. Getting a look at the team’s future The final big decision made by the OSU coaching staff was the mass integration of backup players. This plan to have a look at young backup players really started with 6:18 left in the third quarter when the Cowboys were up 41-0. In the late game stages, thirdstring QB Ethan Bullock checked into the game for OSU, along with electric freshmen like WR Brennan Presley and RB Dominic Richardson. There were also lots of substitutions on the defensive side of the ball late in the game. The Cowboy defensive backups played well for most of the game but did surrender the lone Jayhawk TD with 12:04 remaining in the game. sports.ed@ocolly.com
